Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

Part two of this three part series looks at explosives use in open-pit and underground mining operations. Part three, next month, will discuss the transportation, storage, handling, and destruction of explosives. Larger ore bodies, lower grade deposits, and more difficult geologic conditions have led to changes in blasting products, techniques, and field practices in both open-pit and underground metal mines. Pit blasting operations must consider the material's geology, needed fragmentation for the material, and hole diameter and depth-as well as the traditional consideration of the type of explosive used. With underground mines, various blasting aspects of burn, angle, and machine cuts must be considered for an efficient and safe operation. Of the factors related to open-pit blasting, geology of the material is most important. Many theories relating to sonic velocity and rock hardness are used to determine needed explosives ratios. Extensive field tests are necessary to determine these factors. In most cases, results assume that the material to be broken is homogenous. The drilling penetration rate is sometimes used as a guide to determine rock hardness; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. In many cases, a very hard, brittle rock will blast with less difficulty than a soft, spongy rock. The formation's stratification is also important. In thinly laminated horizontal seams, rock will usually break and adequately fragment with relatively large burdens and spacings using a low explosives ratio. Massive formations with few laminations require close burdens and spacings and a high explosives ratio. When the stratification is pitched on a severe angle, it is usually preferable to develop the pit face 90°-but no less than 45°-to the stratification. If the face must be developed parallel to the stratification, burdens and spacings must be reduced and the angle drilling that will conform to the angle of the lamination should be given serious consideration.

It is indeed an honor for White Pine, as a member of the copper mining industry, to participate in this Rapid Excavation Conference. Although our presentation, as the title indicates, is not a success story, we foresee, through our experience, future application of boring machines and rapid excavation equipment in the hard rock mining industry. One might ask what a copper mining company would be doing with boring machines and why the gamble on a high-cost, capital investment for a relatively untried application. Perhaps a little background on the White Pine mine and its geology will explain our daring and speculative motives. THE WHITE PINE MINE The White Pine Copper Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Copper Range Company, operates a mine, mill and smelter at White Pine, Michigan in the western Upper Peninsula approximately 6 miles due south of Lake Superior. We employ approximately 3,000 people from the surrounding area and mine approximately 25,500 tons of low grade (1%) copper ore per day. The orebody is contained within several distinct sedimentary horizons that comprise the lower 20 feet of a Precambrian formation known as the Nonesuch Shale. Numerous articles and reports have described many aspects of the White Pine operation and the geology. I will brief you only on that criteria which precipitated our interest in rapid excavation equipment and techniques, specifically, boring machines. By an order of the Executive Council of the Provincial Government dated January 18, 1979, a Royal Commission was established under the Public Inquiries Act to: 1) Examine the adequacy of existing Federal and Provincial requirements for the protection of the health and safety of workers associated with exploration, mining and milling of uranium in B.C. and for the protection of the environment and of the public. 2) Receive public input on these matters. 3) Make recommendations for setting and maintaining standards for worker and public safety and for the protection of the environment as a result of the exploration for the mining and milling of uranium ores. At that time,and at the present time in British Columbia, no uranium mines were, or are, in operation. Exploration at a number of sites was under way and one deposit, the Blizzard deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.92 million tonnes containing approximately 4.74 million kilograms of U308 was at an advanced stage of exploration. With our Terms of Reference, and because of the diverse geology of the western Cordillera which could potentially host a broad variety of uranium, deposit types, the Commission was faced with the task of considering environmental and health protection necessary for the potential development of [any] kind of uranium mineralogy situated in [any] of the environments found in British Columbia. Over the past 17 months since that time, much has transpired, culminating in the February 27, 1980 Provincial Government announcement of a seven year moratorium on exploration, mining and processing of uranium coupled with the termination of our Inquiry before completion of the hearings. The Government sebsequently modified its decision to terminate the Commission completely, deciding instead to stop the hearing but allow time for the Commission to gather in the work that had been initiated

The semivariogram is one of the most important tools available to the geostatistician for the analysis of mineral deposits. To be complete, a semivariogram study must include a minimum of three parts which are highly interdependent. These are: calculation of the semivariogram, mathematical modeling, and geologic interpretation. The known factors and conditions which controlled or influenced the distribution of mineralization within the body being studied should be considered in the analysis .of the semivariogram. The presence and characteristics of successive phases of mineralization, the chemical and physical properties of the host rocks and the mineralization should all be considered. This requires close and continued communication between the geologist and the geostatistician prior to and during the semi-variogram study. Geologic stationarity is needed if meaningful semivariogram results are to be obtained. The first step is, therefore, to determine whether the mineralization can be analyzed as a whole or if different geologically homogeneous sections must be defined and evaluated separately. Different methods can be used to calculate an experimental semivariogram from known sample values. The method chosen will depend not only on the anticipated and actual statistical properties of the deposit, but also on its geologic characteristics.

The benefits derived from the use of main fan evasees or diffusers are well known. If a well designed evasee is fitted to a fan either more air will flow through it or the same air flow rate will be discharged at a lower fan speed. This latter possibility will reduce the air power requirement of the mine, the fan input power and the overall energy costs. Despite these apparent advantages, many reports have been received from the industry of poor evasee performance. After examination, it appears that these problems are often caused by installation difficulties or inaccurate design procedures. The performance of an evasee is affected by several independent factors. Some of these factors describe the evasee geometry whilst others are concerned with the behaviour of the air as it passes through the evasee. This paper shows that the divergence angle is by no means the only ;important parameter which affects evasee performance and that the size of the inlet boundary layer has a significant influence. The performance of evasees of differing geometric shape are compared and the criterion to be used for optimum performance is discussed. It is shown that the commonly used evasee efficiency is a poor indicator of good performance. Recent work by the author and others is evaluated and a simple design. guide discussed. For more sophisticated work, details of a. computer program are provided. Finally, a brief resume of the performance of truncated diffusers is given. Since compressibility effects can be ignored for most mining applications, incompressible flow has been assumed for most of this paper.

A large percentage of Southern Appalachian coal reserves are located in seams less than 36" thick. As thicker and currently more mineable deposits are exhausted, methods of underground thin-seam extraction must be developed. Past experience with highwall mining of thin-seam coal has indicated that recovery rates tend to be lower than in conventional operations. It is suspected that this will also apply to underground thin-seam mining, regardless of proposed technology or mining method. Backfilling is one alternative for thin-seam coal mining; although backfill has been used extensively in hard rock mining its use in coal mining has been limited. The ability of backfill to provide additional ground support may enhance coal recovery by allowing for the design of undersized pillars. Backfill is capable of providing additional ground support by restricting lateral deformation of surrounding coal pillars and roof. This additional support can result in significant increases in recovery from thin-seam coal deposits. However, the overall feasibility of backfill is dependent on the in situ behavior of the fill material, the properties of the fill, the effects of the filling method on the total mining operation, and the cost of filling per extra ton of coal recovered.

Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve coal conservation and utilization is currently investigating longwall panel layouts to maximize coal recovery and minimize interactive problems in multiple-seam operations. When longwalling coalbeds in descending order, the transfer of stress from overlying gate roads is a major design constraint affecting pillar stability in the lower mine. The lower mine gate road pillars must be properly designed to withstand the additional load transfer if gate roads are superpositioned in successive seams. The Bureau's MULSIM/NL model was used to analyze load transfer mechanics for superpositioned gate road pillars. Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), which is an empirically based design method for longwall gate road pillars, was used to calibrate model input parameters. The attributes of both the MULSIM/NL model and ALPS were combined to develop a modified method for estimating pillar stress for multiple-seam cases. The modified method uses a multiple-seam (MS) factor to estimate the stress on the lower mine gate road pillars when superpositioning is practiced. Numerical analysis shows that the MS factor is dependent upon the interburden thickness and pillar width and is presented in a series of graphs relating these two parameters. Several examples are included to illustrate the use of the MS factor for estimating lower mine pillar stress and resulting stability factors.

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

British Columbia's physiography - the mountains, valleys and watercourses - provides the basis for rich and varied plant and animal resources and for complex land uses. Mining alters the physical environment in a manner that may create a disproportionate impact on biological resources and land use systems. The object of environmental legislation is therefore largely the protection of the basic physical environment: land surface, water, and air. The pace of mineral exploration, placer mining, and underground and surface gold mining has recently quickened in British Columbia, testing the ability of both industry and regulatory agencies to respond to legislative requirements. Some parameters of mining activity have critical significance for environmental protection, for example: the area disturbed; the physical and chemical qualities of ore, waste and overburden; and the nature of materials handling. Acid mine drainage is a particular hazard. Provincial legislation that applies to mining includes the Mines Act, the Environment Management Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Water Act. Government of Canada legislation includes the Fisheries Act and the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations. Every new mine proposal in British Columbia is reviewed in the Mine Development Review Process, which receives its mandate from the Provincial Environment and Land Use Cabinet Committee. The proponent submits reports to the Mine Development Steering Committee in succeeding stages: Prospectus, Stage I (after which approval-in-principle may be granted by ELUC); and if necessary Stage 11. INTRODUCTION In May 1984, The Canadian Pacific Railway awarded to the Joint Venture of Foundation of Canada, Ltd. of Toronto, Atlas Construction Co. of Montreal, and S. A. Healy Co. of Chicago the contract for the construction of 27,000 ft of tunnel starting from the east portal. Selkirk contractors, the Joint Venture of Foundation, Atlas and Healy, which had successfully completed for CPR in 1983 the construction of both portal structures for this tunnel, studied several different alternative proposals before presenting its bid pooling each individual company's technical resources and experiences. (Foundation had just completed in association with other companies a similar tunnel project in British Columbia, and the S. A. Healy Co. could provide its experience of more than 40 miles of tunnels excavated by full face boring machines.) Among the alternatives investigated there was a fully circular tunnel to be excavated by a 30 ft diameter TBM, a full section drill and shoot proposal, and a mixed alternative, the "key hole" proposal, consisting of a TBM driven circular top heading followed by benching to design size. Technical, geological and economical considerations determined the alternative that was eventually proposed to CPR. HISTORICAL NOTES The tunnel construction parallels an existing tunnel through the Selkirk mountains that was excavated in 1885. In order to reduce the grade to 1% on the heavily loaded west bound trains, the new tunnel was at a lower elevation and lengthened to almost 9 miles. GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION CP Rail site investigations began in 1978. The surface rocks in the tunnel construction area are metamorphosed Cambrian and Pre-Cambrian sediments; the underlying formation contains fine and coarse grained rocks presenting different degrees of metamorphism. Methods of measuring in situ rock thermo-physical properties are rapidly evolving. Among those existing in the literature, a particular measurement procedure was selected for further development. The measurement is based on creating a spherical temperature field in a drill hole using a point source heater of constant heat flux. The bivariate temperature distribution 0 (r, t) is measured at several points along the length of the drillhole, radius r from the heater and at particular time intervals (t). A number of different evaluation methods were tested for calculating the unknown thermal conductivity (k) and diffusivity [] from the measured temperature and the known heat flux. The results showed that evaluation using the finite difference scheme and small temperature differences measured at points close together, cannot give a reasonable result. In order to solve the problem a new general analytical evaluation method is developed. Using an appropriate technique, it is possible to simultaneously obtain values for k and [], incorporating a semi least square technique to reduce the uncertainty in the evaluation. The new device and evaluation method makes it possible to obtain from a single drill hole highly precise k and [] values within an 8 hour period. The method has been used in several underground mines in the U.S. with good results.

The traditional approach to mine ventilation planning involved making estimates of airflows, including leakage routes, and summing the corresponding pressure drops along consecutive paths in order to determine the fan pressures required. This methodology changed completely with the availability of computers. Mainframe digital computers began to be used for mine ventilation network analysis in the mid-1960's. Their use spread rapidly throughout the world in the 1970's. Mainframe machines were employed owing to the need for high speed numerical procedures and substantial storage requirements. However, during the past decade, the growing availability of low cost but powerful microcomputers has allowed the development of net- work analysis programs that can handle ventilation systems of hundreds of branches, and which can produce results within a few minutes. This paper discusses recent advances in software and hardware development specific to mine ventilation planning. Software developments include interactive data and output manipulation, graphical representation of output, internal checks on input parameters to preset ranges and subroutines which calculate the gas distribution throughout the network from known gas sources. Hardware advances have led to significant increases in memory to facilitate the analysis of large ventilation models, math co-processor chips which greatly shorten run times, and plotter hardware for graphical output displays. Recent software developments make it possible to graphically display output on printers faster than on standard plotters.

Researchers in flotation chemistry have long sought to describe collector adsorption phenomena in greater detail including kinetics, orientation and interactions between adsorbed species. Now a quantitative description can be made in-situ using FTIR internal reflection spectroscopy. Details of the adsorption process at the surface of mineral crystals, machined into internal reflection elements, can be described from first principles, provided the refractive indices, incident angle, and wavelength of light are known. Collector orientation can be established based on spectral characteristics of plane polarized and perpendicular polarized light. Examples of the use of in-situ FTIR internal reflection spectroscopy are given for the sapphire-sodium dodecyl sulfate system and for the fluorite-sodium oleate system. It is expected that quantitative in-situ analysis of collector adsorption reactions by FTIR internal reflection spectro-scopy will continue to grow in importance and will provide an important new dimension in our understanding of flotation chemistry.

An examination was conducted on the impact of roof conditions and the mining cycle in determining a representative respirable mass concentration at the mid-shearer location on a longwall panel. Multiple personal gravimetric dust samplers, operated at a flow rate of 2.0 lpm, were used at different locations along the face to isolate the concentrations and variances associated with good and bad roof conditions under both the cutting and cleaning mode of operation. The number of samples needed to estimate the population variance at a given confidence level was analyzed. In addition, the statistical analysis showed that the coefficient of variation of dust concentrations at different locations and under different conditions ranged from 0.185 to 0.475, with an average value of 0.283. The estimates of the average dust concentration for a shift and the variance of the dust concentrations were calculated. A total of 48 data points were available for an [a x b] factorial ANOVA (analysis of variance). The estimates of the variance components were determined. The results from F-tests indicated that both the roof conditions and mining operations had a significant effect on the respirable dust concentration. There was no significant interaction effect between mining operations and roof conditions. In conclusion, this study shows that not only should sampling and analytical errors be considered in determining the required number of samples for a good estimate of the long-range exposures of miners, but also fluctuations of concentrations due to mining operations and geological conditions should be taken into account.

The increased emphasis on environmental protection, together with the exorbitant costs, or in many urban areas the complete unavailability of surface space, has resulted in a burgeoning demand for greater use of underground space. More and more, those considering new or expanded facilities are looking toward the possibility of utilizing underground space for communications installations, for transportation of people, industrial products, water, sewage and energy, and for industrial installations. Happily, this growing demand for use of underground space is accompanied by fast forward strides looking toward more efficient underground excavation techniques. The tunnel boring machine is already here and where ground conditions are suitable for its use it can greatly reduce the cost of underground excavations, savings of one-third or more often being realized. Research is underway involving excavation by use of laser beams, jetting, vibrations, improvement of tunnel boring machines to make possible the excavation of harder rock, and other advanced techniques. The Engineering Foundation estimated in 1973 that tunneling costs can be reduced as much as 30 percent by rapid excavation methods which are expected to be developed through ongoing research programs in the next few years. Your American Society of Civil Engineers reported in 1973 that $60 billion per year, or 15 percent of the gross national product, could be saved if facilities required to support life were located in the subsurface. Studies looking toward improved contracting practices are going on under the sponsorship of the National Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Al Mathews who is heading this program will address you during this session on the status of this project. The Chaucha porphyry copper/molybdenum deposit was discovered by a United Nations team of geologists working with a ?counter- part" team of staff of the Ecuadorian government's General Directorate of Geology and Mines (DDGM) in July 1968. The exploration program formed the latter part of phase I work plan of a two-phased exploration project financed by the United Nations Development Programme and initiated in late 1964. The author was a team geologist during the period 1965-1967 and subsequently project manager for the period 1968-1972. The Chaucha property lies some 10 km (6 miles) east of the north- south-running western boundary of what was known as Operation Area No. 5. This area of some 10 500 km2(4050 sq miles) is a square truncated to the southeast and centered on the city of Cuenca, the major provincial capital (Azuay Province) of southern Ecuador. The eastern half of the exploration area is dominated by the Cretaceous- Tertiary sedimentary valley (basin) of Cuenca (Caar-Azuay) and its related drainage area. The western half, in which Chaucha lies, is dominated by the high Cordillera Occidental volcanic plateau and the western erosional valleys of the Andes draining to the Pacific. The valley that dominates the eastern part of the area [I500 m (4920 ft) above sea level] is transected by the Pan-American Highway. Because of increased agricultural activity associated with the Cuenca Valley, the area is reasonably well covered by a road network of varying quality. The high western area up to 4000 m (13,120 ft) in altitude is largely barren and completely inaccessible by vehicle. The geological reconnaissance map of the region is shown in Fig. 1.

Many a deposit estimation has been carried out since geostatistical methods were first implemented. To date however few mining programs have totally been completed and even fewer comparisons can be drawn between estimated reserves and extracted ore tonnages. Aluminium Pechiney work a number of bauxite mines in Southern France. As from 1969 they modified their deposit estimation methods, giving up traditional approaches and opting for geostatistics. At that time, the authors of this paper were entrusted with the first geostatistical estimations and in particular, those concerning the deposits mentioned herein. Over the past decade a number of deposits have been worked out and we thought it interesting to report about comparative results. French bauxite deposits are of the karstic, as opposed to the lateritic, type. The bauxite, formed at some distance of the present-day deposit, was brought to and trapped in limestone karst pits. Subsequent physical and chemical alterations may have taken place : silica and carbonate drifts, recent karst slips. The morphology of these deposits is often rather complicated. The deposits are small from a few hundred thousand to a few million tons at the most. The overburden thickness usually precludes open mining. Mining investments and financial risks are often high, making it necessary to obtain optimal information on the deposit considered for mining. For the three cases brought up in this paper, deposit sizes, exploration methods and conclusions differ. They are brought up mainly to show the advantages inherent to a quality geostatistical study and the lessons drawn by Aluminium Pechiney.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Gold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 8 Mt (9 million at) of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 0.9 Mt (1.0 million stpy). Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, minable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.
