The Fortitude skarn near Battle Mountain, NV is currently one of the largest producing gold skarns in the world. It contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of minable ore grading 5.14 g/t (0.149 oz per st) and is the distal portion of a continuous skarn system in the Copper Canyon area centered on the Eocene Copper Canyon granodiorite porphyry. Calcsilicate compositions, opaque mineralogy, and the high gold grades are atypical of other base metal skarns (iron, Fe; copper, Cu; lead-zinc, Pb-Zn; or tungsten, W). The Copper Canyon skarn is systematically zoned from a garnet (AD 70-100) dominant, pyroxene (HD 20-45) subordinate zone, with major Cu mineralization, adjacent to the intrusive (West ore body), to a pyroxene (HD20-100) dominant, garnet (AD90-100 cores. AD 30-60 rims)subordinate assemblage, with major Au, near the distal marble front (Fortitude ore body). An extensive biotite ± diopsidic pyroxene ± kspar alteration halo surrounds the pyroxene > garnet gold-bearing skarn and represents the early stages of metasomatic alteration. Retrograde alteration is limited in areal extent and intensity, and consists of actinolite, chlorite, quartz, and prehnite. Economic gold mineralization begins in the pyroxene > garnet zone and continues to the marble front, a distance of 1 to 1.5 km (0.6 to 0.9 miles), respectively, from the plutonic contact. The opaque mineralogy in this gold zone includes pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, minor chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, argentite, hessite, hedleyite, volnyskite, and native bismuth and gold. The pyrite-pyrrhotite geothermometer yields temperatures that range from 450° C to 300°C (842° F to 582° F) and the electrum-argentite-sphalerite geothermometer yields temperatures which range from 290°C (554° F) at the marble front to about 420°C (788° F) more proximal to the intrusive. Log fS2 calculations from the sulfide assemblages yield values near - 10 with log fO2 values of about -30, in a solution of near neutral pH (5-6). Calculations of metal solubility suggest that the metals were transported as chloride complexes in the proximal skarn but that bisulfide complexes were predominant within the distal gold skarn. Relatively low oxidation states buffered by the carbonaceous to argilliceous, calcareous protolith and subsequent ferrous iron-rich skarn assemblages appear to have increased the gold carrying capacity of this large hydrothermal system.

Introduction Grinding ball wear in wet grinding is due to a complex combination of abrasion, corrosion, impact and their interactions. The ball charge is continually falling from a height greater than half of the ball mill's diameter, and contact is made with ore particles or other balls. Abrasive wear occurs through penetration and plowing of media materials from the ball surface by hard ore particles (Gangopadhyay and Moore, 1985). Electrochemical interactions between the abraded and unabraded areas of the ball surfaces, as well as between the grinding media and the minerals, occur in grinding mill pulps (Adam et al., 1986). The wear depends on the media composition, the hardness and the corrosive/abrasive characteristics of the slurry. The marked-ball-wear test method was used to evaluate the performance of grinding media under nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. Also, the wear mode was studied by observing the grinding media surface under a scanning electron microscope. In general, grinding media of high hardness and high chromium contents were found to have better corrosive wear resistance than those of low hardness and low chromium contents (Jang, Iwasaki and Moore, 1988). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the size distribution and the shape of wear debris in a study of the wear rates and wear behaviors of grinding balls. Experimental Materials The grinding ball alloys used in this investigation were: •martensitic stainless steel (MSS; 0.96% C and 16.2% Cr), •high-carbon, low-alloy steel (HCLA; 0.89% C and 0.53% Cr), and •mild steel (MS; 0.22% C and 0.09% Cr). The mineral used in this study was synthetic corundum, because it was on hand and contained no magnetic impurities. Debris A 203- mm (8-in.) diam porcelain mill was used for grinding the corundum. The mill charge consisted of: •1200 g of 12-grit synthetic corundum, •770 mL of 0.05 mole/L Na2SO4 (61% solids), and •125 steel balls of nominally 25-mm (1-in.) diam. To minimize the debris corrosion, nitrogen was introduced into the mill. Grinding with MSS, HCLA-steel or MS balls was conducted for 2 hr at 51 rpm. The grinding time using the MS ball was varied from 0.5 hr to 2 hr in an attempt to study the debris amount and shape as a function of time. The debris was collected with a hand magnet from the ground slurry and separated from the corundum particles using a Davis magnetic tube. After the separation, the debris particles were immediately washed with acetone and then filtered and dried. Debris size analysis Buckbee-Mears 3-in.-diam, micro-mesh sieves and an electromagnetic shaker were used for determining the debris size distribution. In sieving, isopropyl alcohol was used. The debris fraction collected from each sieve was washed with acetone, dried and then weighed on an analytical balance. [ ]

Safety and health are fundamental values at Barrick Goldstrike. An effective safety and health program protects employees, controls costs and increases productivity. Barrick Goldstrike believes that all occupational injuries and illnesses can be prevented and that safety must be the responsibility of every employee on the property. Safety and health must be thoroughly integrated with the company's efforts to maximize production at the lowest reasonable cost. The goals of safety and production are not mutually exclusive. They must work together to achieve safe production. Barrick Goldstrike began to mine the Betze deposit in 1987. From 1987 to 1992, Barrick employed a traditional safety system using safety specialists on each crew. These specialists were responsible for ensuring that the work areas were safe and that employees were properly protected and trained in safe work procedures. As the work force increased, it became apparent that this system was not the most effective method of ensuring safe production. In 1992, Barrick Goldstrike implemented a loss control program. It was modeled after the International Loss Control Institutes's (ILCI) International Mine Safety Rating System. This program was based on the philosophy that safety is a management responsibility. It can be managed in the same manner that production and cost issues are managed. Under the loss control system, safety needs are identified and evaluated. Programs with performance standards are developed and implemented and the activities and results are regularly monitored. Between 1992 and 1996, Barrick Goldstrike worked at developing and improving its safety management systems. These efforts had a positive return. The incident rates began to decline as these improved systems were implemented. Studies were undertaken in early 1996 to evaluate the effectiveness of the safety and loss control programs in reducing accidents. The studies showed a strong correlation between the implementation of the loss control programs and the resulting reduction in all accidents. Studies in the process division revealed that Barrick had experienced reductions in personal injury accidents from the projected number that could have been expected had no changes been instituted. These reductions ranged from 39% in 1993 to 59% in 1995. These reductions from the projected rates held true for all types of accidents; personal injury, property damage and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reportable.

The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

In coal-bearing formations, seams are often bounded by sedimentary layers of mudstone, claystone or shale. When the electrical conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers is greater than the conductivity of the seam, a natural parallel plate waveguide forms in the strata. For frequencies below the AM broadcast band, the waveguide can be used for the transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. In a uniform seam, the primary wave travels in the coal layer along paths between a radiating antenna and a distant receiving antenna. The travel distance increases with seam height and the conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers. The distance decreases with increased coal conductivity. In Cretaceous western bituminous coal, the distance may exceed 549 m (1800 ft). Anomalous geologic disturbance zones such as faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the values of EM wave propagation constants (attenuation and phase) expected in a uniform seam. In the neighborhood of an anomaly, EM wave energy is scattered (reflected and diffracted). Scattering creates secondary waves in the seam wave guide. A receiving antenna at a remote location in the coal seam can be used to measure the magnitude and phase of the EM wave at the end of the path. The measured data can be processed to determine the average value of the propagation constants along each path. Paths with anomalous propagation constants are used to locate and image geologic disturbance zones. Radio Imaging Method (RIM) instrumentation, survey procedures and data processing (tomography) algorithms have been developed to image geologic structure in advance of mining. The survey is conducted between gate roads of a longwall panel. Data processing constructs contours of constant attenuation rate (phase constant) across the plan view of the panel. In anomalous zones, the contours rapidly change with distance. The shape of the contour lines generates a visual image of the anomaly and suggests the type of anomalous condition to be expected in the coal seam. This paper briefly discusses the depositional environment and the formation of the imperfect waveguide in coal-bearing strata. The linkage between sedimentary geology and EM wave theory establishes an understanding of how the propagation constants depend on the anomalous geologic conditions. A case study compares in-mine geologic mapping with the tomographic image of a longwall panel.

INTRODUCTION Column-type supports are used to prevent roof falls in underground excavations. The first individual column supports were made from timber that was cut to fit the irregular heights of mine seams. Because the seam height of the material removed varied throughout the mine, timber posts generally could be used only once. During the I 920s, steel friction props began to appear in British and European mines, and, by the 1950s, thousands of these props were being used. However, the steel friction props were heavy, difficult to install, and difficult to recover. Furthermore, the friction props could not be preloaded, and their yielding behavior was rather erratic. In 1946, hydraulic props were introduced in En¬gland, and, within a few years, they replaced friction props throughout Europe. The first application of hy¬draulic props in the United States occurred in the 1950s, during early experiments with longwall mining. Modern technology and high-production mining procedures have combined to make the use of hydraulic props a very acceptable method of providing temporary heavy-duty support for production areas. In areas such as development headings, where only modest roof loads are expected, lighter-duty jackscrews, ratchet jacks, and light hydraulic props are used. ADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC SUPPORTS The acceptance of hydraulic supports has been wide¬spread during the past 25 years, proving their reliability and effectiveness in preventing roof falls. Some of the advantages provided by hydraulic supports are: 1) Individual hydraulic props can be installed within 30 sec, resulting in a minimum exposure of per¬sonnel and equipment to an unsupported roof. 2) Hydraulic props can be preloaded to more than 4.5 t (5.0 st), increasing the frictional resistance between the rock strata. Thus, the roof is kept tight, improving the behavior of the unsupported ground. 3) If gradual roof sagging or bottom heaving im¬poses an irresistible force, the hydraulic prop yields gradually and continues to support the ground. 4) The support capacities of the hydraulic props most widely used range between 10 and 20 t (11 and 22 st). Their support capacities are maintained during yielding to an irresistible force. 5) Hydraulic props can be recovered rapidly. Where no other supports are provided for the roof, as in pillar¬ing operations, the hydraulic props can be recovered by remote means. 6) The length of hydraulic props is readily adjust¬able allowing them to be reused in seams where roof height varies. 7) Studies of mining operations indicate that the use of hydraulic props increases both personnel safety and mine productivity. The term ball clay is applied to plastic sedimentary clays that have a high content of kaolinite and that possess white firing properties and high green strength (Mitchell and Stentiford, 1973). However, the name ball clay is not derived from any specific property of the clay. Instead, it comes from the original method of production in southwestern England (Scott, 1929). From open pits, the clay was cut into cubes with hand tools. The sides of the cubes were about 220 to 250 mm (9 to 10 in.) and weighed 14 to 16 kg (30 to 35 lb.). The eventual rounding of the corners with handling before sale gave rise to the term ball clay. Ball clays provide the workability and green strength required by the whiteware section of the world's ceramic industry. The main applications are in the sanitaryware, tile and tableware sectors. Each, though, requires particular technical properties in the ball clay component. The clay has to be as white firing as possible for all applications. However, for sanitary-ware, the rheological properties are most important. For tableware, fired whiteness and freedom from specking are the main criteria. Tiles need a reasonable green strength but the clay also needs to be cost-effective. The technical properties of the individual clays in any deposit depend on the clay mineral assemblage. This, in turn, depends on the geological formation of the deposits. Hence, it is the latter that largely determines the market sector for which the clay blends from a particular deposit are suited. Formation of ball clays Ball clays are formed from three main components - kaolinite, micaceous minerals and quartz - while carbonaceous material is also often present. The crystallinity of the kaolinite and mica varies. There are also occasional minor occurrences of feldspar, chlorite, montmorillonite andmixed. layer minerals. Marcasite, siderite and anatase also occur in small amounts. The properties of the clay depend on its mineralogical composition and its particle size distribution, particularly in the lowest size ranges. The original source rocks and the environment of deposition of the clay are the controlling factors. The importance of weathering processes in the formation of ball clays has long been recognized (Bristow, 1968). The diversity of source rocks produces considerable variation in the clay minerals formed. Therefore, each deposit is unique, with time-related variation within it. The greatest development of a weathering mantle takes place in a tropical climatic environment. Plant remains confirm that most ball clay deposits were formed under hot and wet conditions. Sedimentation of the clays had to be in fresh or low salinity water or clay minerals detrimental to whiteware manufacture would have been formed. Fresh water traps for the ball clay, sand and lignite sequences depended -on tectonic features, such as basin development along fault zones or lakes and lagoons on the edge of a large scale embayment. INTRODUCTION The Columbia River Basalt beneath the Hanford Site is one of several rock types being considered by the U.S. Department of Energy for the first commercial high-level nuclear waste repository. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has been carrying out a comprehensive investigation to assess the feasibility of constructing a repository in basalt and to develop technology required for repository engineering and site characterization. Development of a nuclear waste repository requires a number of design considerations not usually necessary in the planning of conventional underground structures. Principal among these is the thermally induced stress field resulting from waste emplacement. This thermal stress, super- imposed on the preexisting in situ- and excavation- induced stress fields, needs to be evaluated in the design process due to the sensitivity of waste emplacement density to this factor. The nature of this thermally induced stress field is dependent on several factors, including the temperature distribution around the repository openings, the thermal properties of the rock mass, and the deformability of the rock mass. Re1iable performance of the repository structure is largely determined by the ability to under- stand the above rock mass characteristics and predict the underground opening response to waste emplacement based on this understanding. To gain an understanding of this rock mass behavior in a repository condition, the BWIP has conducted a large-scale heated block test in basalt at the Near-Surf ace Test Facility (NSTF) on the Hanford Site. This paper presents the results from the elevated temperature phase of the block test in which the thermal, mechanical, and thermo- mechanical response of the closely jointed basalt rock mass was evaluated as a function of stress and loading orientation at varying temperatures up to 200 oC. SITE GEOLOGY The NSTF test areas, including the block test site, are located in the entablature zone of the Pomona basalt f low. The Pomona flow entablature is structurally typical of most flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group in that it is characterized by long, undulating, polygonal columns up to 2.4 m in length. Columns vary from 15 to 30 cm in diameter, averaging about 20 cm. Over their length, columns can vary in dip by 150 to 200. The column structures are dissected by subhorizontal cross joints that are generally discontinuous and seldom cross columnar joint boundaries. Spacing of the cross joints also averages about 20 cm. A representative joint pattern taken from mapping of the tunnel wall near the block test site is shown in figure 1. Application of the Rock Mass Rating System (Bieniawski, l979) to the block test site yielded an overall value of 62. The corresponding value from application of the Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) is 8.7 (Cramer and Kim,1985). The NSTF is approximately 50 m below the surf ace. However, this depth is sti1l above the water table and conditions are generally dry. Interstitial water exists as the result of percolation of meteoric water from the surface.

"Sociotechnical systems are everywhere in the modern industrial world. Sociotechnical systems describe how humans interact with technology throughout a variety of processes. These systems are prevalent in modern industrial settings, such as operating mines. Safety and health management systems (SHMSs) are complex sociotechnical structures designed with the aim of managing and reducing occupational risk. U.S. mining companies are voluntarily adopting SHMSs to supplement regulatory safety compliance efforts. Like all complex sociotechnical systems there are a wide variety of approaches and adoption philosophies around a SHMS. Many SHMSs suffer from high levels of redundancies, which manifest themselves in diverse ways: duplicate processes, forms, permits, and tracking mechanisms. These redundancies have severe impacts on the overall system and absorb critical culture and leadership “energy”. A recent study initiated by the University of Utah and sponsored by the Alpha Foundation is investigating the effectiveness of SHMSs across 15 different U.S. mining sites. A large amount of data has been captured to help characterize elements of SHMSs and correlate their impacts on safety outcomes. Many variables were assessed in the study. Those of importance to this paper are the variables describing the robustness of the sociotechnical aspects of the SHMS. Two such variables are the overall integration of the SHMS within the whole system and how data is managed. Data management in this context deals with the approach to capturing, analyzing, and acting on data within the system. As well, systems are integrated around controlled, data-sharing mechanisms. It has been found that wide variety of approaches has been taken to integrate the SHMS within the governing management philosophy at a given site. A series of case studies is presented that develop some specific best practices for proper data management and integration of SHMSs.Introduction and Project Background Managing occupational health and safety can be done in many different ways, and with many different approaches, but is often based on the host country’s regulatory and industrial culture. However, many companies have extended their effort beyond the regulatory requirements of their host nation and have implemented Safety and Health Management Systems. The goal of these efforts is to reduce and eliminate occupational risk. Many health and safety practitioners have a hard time justifying various elements of health and safety management. There is a lack of institutional knowledge that measures and assesses the effectiveness of these Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) elements. To better understand the effectiveness of SHMSs the Alpha Foundation has funded a research project with the University of Utah. The title of the project is “Characterization and Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems in the U.S. Mining Industry.” The research team will assess the SHMSs of 15 United States mine sites. The outcome of the project will be a method to characterize the strength of the SHMS elements, assess a culture and leadership index, and finally establish correlations between elemental risk and safety outcomes. The study is currently in progress. However, many important outcomes have already been observed, particularly on the data management practices within an SHMS."

In mining, the goals can vary widely, and the skills necessary to reach them likewise will vary from operation to operation. It is essential to keep in mind the principal point that an organization embodies the necessary skills which supplement each other and achieve a given objective. Those who direct such an organization are grouped together as "management" and accept the responsibilities for the regulation, administration, supervision and guidance of the enterprise. Those who comprise the "administration" and have supervisory authority are referred to as the "executives." In the early days of mining it was common for one executive to exercise virtually complete control over the entire organization, and direct its operation from a central office. However, the science of management has advanced significantly since then. Mining organization administration now allocates increased authority and flexibility to those in direct-line responsibility, and organizes competent people in specialized fields to provide supervisors with guidance where it is needed in day-to-day operations. Few mining companies today are confined to one operation. Therefore, highly developed skills can be provided in the staff which assists management. This is known as staff-and-line organization, illustrated, in general, in Fig. 29-1. Each operation requires diverse skills for the carrying out of specific functions. The acquisition and training of those with such skills is an important operation in assembling organizations. An organization normally is modified to accommodate individuals rather than being a "hard and fast" mold into which people are fitted. The modern manager is inclined to organize to minimize central direction, with delegation to line executives, providing staff whose day-to-day operations, in cooperation with line executives, coordinate a continuing drive toward the organization's objectives. The staff officers, therefore, tend to become what could be described as parts of the president's brain, dealing with specific areas requiring certain skills. They do not necessarily direct operations, but watch them to be sure that the skills which they have themselves developed can be transmitted to line operations by persuasion rather than by direct authority. The elements of management requiring staff assignments are: 1. Planning, which, at staff level, is only a coordinating activity. Planning is done at all levels in the organization. 2. Engineering. 3. Finance. 4. Control. 5. Personnel and industrial relations, which set personnel policies, including salary plans and the means of handling relations with the unions. 6. Research, which, in a modern organization, is essential to progress and needs to be overseen at the top. 7. Legal staff to see that all operations of the company are provided with sound legal advice, and that the company's policies stay within the law.

"With decades of development and exploitation of coal resources, the first batch of coal-based cities in China are faced with the challenge of economic shrinkage and environment deterioration due to the rapid resource exhaustion and single industrial structure. Nowadays, as a policy instrument for sustainable development, a nationwide circular economy mode has been implemented during the design and planning of new coal mines to address the challenges arising from economic depression, energy shortage and environmental pollution. It should be mentioned that several national coal bases and most of constructing and planning coal mines are located in the underdeveloped areas in the Midwest of China which means that the distance between supply source for energy resources and the demand market is significantly increased. Moreover, the eco-environment vulnerability in these rural areas should be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, after comparison and analysis with several successful coals based and diversified circular industry chains, this paper presents a case study on the circular economy park (CEP) in the northwest of Shanxi Province. Through discussion and evaluation of ‘1+3’ mode in the CEP, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of coal mine sustainable development and shed light on the relationship between resources exploitation and local economic development.1. Introduction Earth's fossil energy resources are crucial to both economic prosperity and human well-being. Taking coal mining and consumption as an example, coal has been widely used to generate electricity since the 1880s, and more than 40% of the electricity globally is provided by coal nowadays. However, as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases (39% of global CO2 emissions), the extensive excavation and utilization of coal have brought a series of side effects to both natural environment and human health (Wikipedia 2017). As the largest coal producer and consumer in the world, China is leading the list over the past decade (as shown in Figure 1) (BP 2016). The excavation and utilization of coal resources have made a crucial impact and irreplaceable contributions to China’s industrial development and economic prosperity (Long and Zhang 2009). However, most of the air pollution in China are also attributed to the simplified and extensive exploitation of coal resources, e.g., 90% of SO2, 67% of NO, 70% of smoke ashes, and 70% of CO2 in 2016. In recent years, most of North China and the developed coastal areas were wreathed by smog due largely to the oversimplified extensive utilization of coal, suggesting that the development patterns of coal utilization need to be reshaped so that both the biosphere and humanity could thrive equally."

This investigation involves the development of a two-dimensional continuum model for the description of jointed media. Specific application of the model developed here is for the potential geological disposal of radioactive waste in the layered sequence of fractured volcanic tuffs under Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This is currently being considered by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, administered by the Nevada Operations Office of the U. S. Department of Energy. The work is a direct extension of the previous constitutive model by Thomas (1982) based on the work of Morland (1974). The main feature of Thomas's model includes two parts: a continuum approximation based on average discontinuous displacements across jointing planes within a representative elementary volume, and a material constitutive description based on linear elastic matrix material behavior and nonlinear normal and shear joint behavior between jointing planes. The mathematical descriptions by Morland based on strain partitioning among matrix material and joint sets allow multiple joint sets to be included in the model. However, the initial effort by Thomas to implement Morland's mathematical model included only a single set of joints. To make the material model reflect more realistically the field characteristics, the current work extended Thomas's model to include orthogonal sets of joints. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior is retained in the present model. Joint shear response was treated as linear elastic in the shear stress versus shear displacement relationship prior to attaining the stress level governed by the Coulomb friction criterion. Beyond this critical stress value, a horizontal line is assumed in the work of Thomas for the shear stress versus slip displacement relationship such that the shear stress remains constant while the slip displacement increases. Motivated by experimental observation, the current work generalized the shear response to allow a line with finite slope to govern the slip behavior beyond the critical stress level. The inclusion of an orthogonal joint set led to a fourth order algebraic equation for the calculation of stress increments as compared with a second order equation obtained by Thomas. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior provides criteria which allow the selection of the root that yields result consistent with the loading condition of the problem. The addition of one more set of joints provides the potential to more completely study the interaction of various parameters representing the characteristics of jointed media behavior. Material responses to various loading conditions based on the present constitutive model have been obtained. These results and their comparisons to single joint set results are presented. Introduction Pure alunite (KAl3 (SO4 )3 (OH)6 ) contains 37% A1203. In the alunite ore found on Milos Island, Greece, opal is the principal gangue while some aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides are also present. Processing of alunite ore leads to the recovery of potassium sulfate, alusil (alumina-silica mixture), and sulfur dioxide. An interesting process has been developed in Greece (Svoronos, 1977) consisting mainly of roasting the alunite ore mixed with KCl to disrupt the mineral lattice in preparation for separating its components. The thermal decomposition of alunite at approximately 600°C occurs by the reaction: KAl3 (SO4)3 (OH)6 + nSiO2 + 6KC1 - 4 K2SO4 + 3 A1203 . nSiO2 + 6 HCl + 3H20 According to the process pure alunite mixed with 543 kg KCl, 840 kg K2SO4, 370 kg alusil, 264 kg HCl, and 65 kg H2O are produced. The roasted calcine is leached in hot water. The potassium sulfate leach slurry is then thickened and washed to obtain a solid residue (alusil) plus a solution rich in potassium sulfate. Assuming the alunite ore feed consists of 50% to 60% alunite, the solid residue might consist of approximately 22% to 27% A1203, silica, iron, and titanium oxides. This leach residue could be digested in a hot sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve alumina. An amount of the alumina (approximately 10%) would not dissolve. In addition, part of the silica would dissolve requiring removal from the solution in a subsequent desilication operation. The same leach residue could be attacked by mineral acids such as a diluted hydrochloric acid to extract aluminum chloride (Sawyer et al., 1983). Alumina and aluminum are presently produced from bauxite of which Greece has important reserves. If this aluminous material (alusil) could be beneficiated by any physical process, then it would be considered as a raw material for the production of fire-clay refractories instead of an alternate source of alumina. Experimental procedure Extensive laboratory work (mineralogical and chemical analyses) indicates that alusil is a mixture of liberated (mostly) alumina and silica particles, not a natural silicate mineral. Table 1 shows the chemical assays of two alusil samples that were obtained from a roasted alunite ore leaching pilot plant. The samples used for the experiments were a very fine alusil powder (K80 = 400 mesh, 38 µm). These were pulped in tap water. Desliming of the pulp before each flotation test was ineffective. Flotation tests were performed in a 2000 ml Denver cell. A standard 500-g sample was first conditioned at a pulp density 50% solids for 5 min with hydrofluoric (HF) acid solution (40%). The temperature of the conditioned pulp was measured and kept nearly constant at 50°C. The pH of the conditioned pulp was also regulated to 2.5-3 with HF solution. Then ARMAC C solution (2%) as well as two drops of fuel oil and one drop of AEROFROTH 65 were added and the pulp was reconditioned for 2 min. After conditioning, the viscous pulp was transfered to the flotation cell. It was then diluted with warm water to about 15% solids and floated to separate silica from alumina particles. A rougher froth product that was cleaned and recleaned was obtained from the flotation tests.

Self-supporting, open stoping underground mining methods are some of the earliest, starting with the prehistoric flint mines of Europe and the Egyptian gold mines of Nubia in the time of the pharaohs. When the early miner created an opening, it had to be inherently stable and self-supporting to enable him to continue. Therefore, as mining progressed beyond simple gophering, self-supported open stoping methods were devised to meet the needs of individual ore bodies. Timber for support appears in mines as early as 1000 BC, but this was for no more than local ground control. The ingenuity of mining engineers through history has so refined open stoping methods that today they produce more tonnage than any other mining system. Self-supported open stoping finds its application in moderate to strong rocks that exhibit little jointing or fiagmentation. Good back, hanging wall, and footwall conditions that require no more than incidental support are an essential part of these mining methods. Open stoping methods find applications in all inclinations of ore body from flat to vertical, and where ore movement may be either mechanical or under the influence of gravity. Table 18.0.1 demonstrates the range of ore bodies suitable for open stoping, with particular reference to their dip and the deposit thickness. Most of the flat-dipping applications use ore pillars for overall support and ground control that may be recovered under some conditions after completion of normal stoping practices. In steeper ore bodies, rib, crown, and sill pillars used to block out the ore may be recovered subsequent to the completion of stoping. Open stopes are frequently filled to facilitate pillar recovery. Two of the methods, vertical crater retreat (VCR) and shrinkage stoping, utilize fragmented ore for temporary support in the stopes. In these two cases, the stope is not strictly open until after drawdown.

They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action."
