Mineral sand beneficiation plants comprise a complex combination of electrostatic, magnetic and gravity based separation techniques. These are combined and replicated in ways that provide the most efficient and cost effective separation of the valuable components. On line instrumentation has been developed at the JKMRC (eg. conductor/non-conductor(CNC) ) to measure the properties of the dry plant process streams. This paper provides results from the recent development of a novel low cost mass flow meter and discusses their combined use with the CNC instrumentation for the control of dry separation circuits.

Throughout the world, there are many orebodies or materials which have significant value but also contain arsenic, antimony, and mercury. As regulations on the transport, exposure, disposition and emission of these elements have become more stringent; it has become increasingly more difficult to derive the values from the resources. This paper outlines the fundamentals of alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy and its successful application to arsenic, antimony and mercury bearing ores, concentrates, by-products, and other materials.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. En d'autre termes, les ingénieurs ont pu, via le procès et l’erreur, éviter les majeur problèmes ‘opérationnel’ mais avec aucune optimisation de tels traitements. Ainsi, la plupart des projets de fracturation hydraulique ont été exécuté dans des roches mal consolidées et ont rendu résultat totalement inattendu. Une récente étude mondiale sur les pressions nettes par le Consortium Delft pour Fracturer (Papanastasiou, 1997) a indiqué que les pressions nettes qu’ont été rencontré dans le champ sont environ 50% à 100% plus hautes que les pressions nettes prédites par les simulateurs fracturant conventionnels. La différence est pourtant plus importante pour le cas de formations mal consolidées (Pak, 1997). La théorie de construction d'un simulateur elastoplastic d’hydrofrac à trois dimensions entièrement couplé, en particulier conçu pour les roches non consolidés, est présentée dans ce papier. This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. Abstract : The deformation monitoring data of the middle pier of the in permanent ship lock in Three Gorges revealed several interesting deformation phenomena. Conclusions and explanations are made concerning the phenomena in this paper, based on the finite element and engineering geology analyses. Firstly, the fluctuation of the horizontal transformations can be attributed to the alternate excavation of the two neighbouring ship lock rooms. Secondly, the rock mass discontinuities result in the displacement breaks. Lastly, the main reasons for the one-sided leaning phenomena are the natural stress, which is not evenly distributed, and the presence of discontinuities. This paper presents a valuable reference for studying the ‘individual phenomena’ in geotechnical engineering. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Beobachtungs claten an der Mittelpier deformation bezüglich Permannenter Schiffsschleuse in den Drei Schluchten offenbaren einige interessante Deformationsphänomene. Die Schlußforgerungen und Erklärungen dazu in dieser Arbeit basseren methodisch anf der ‚’ ‘Endlichen-Elemente-Analzse’ und der ‘Ingenieurnissen-Geograhnie-Analzse’. Erstens kann die Fluktuation der horiyontalen Transformation durch die ungleichzeitige Ausgrabung der zwei benachbarten Schiffsschleusenräume verursacht werden. Zweitens resultzert die Diskontinuität der Felsenmasse ans dem verlagerten Bruch. Drittens: Die Hauptgründe für das Zu-einer-Seite-Neigung-Phänomen in manchen Stellen sind der ungleich eigeteilte natürliche Druck und das vorhandersein der Diskontinuität. Diese Arbeit präsentiert eine wertvolle Referenz für die Untersuchung der Sonderfälle in geotechnischen Bau. Résumé: Cet article a analysé sérieusement et profondément , en utilisant des procèdes d’étude par exemple l’analyse d’éléments défini et celle de la condition géographique de traveaux , des règles typiques de la déformation montrées dans les données surveillantes à propos de la déformation des pierres centrales dans les écluses éternelles du Trois Gorges , on en a tiré une conclusion : 1) le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales est causé par les creusages séquentiels des cannelure voisines ; 2) l’inclinaison au Nord de toutes les pierres centrales entre les deuxième et troisième chambres d’écluse est causée par la différence de la gravitation entre les deux chambres d’écluse et par l’existence de la surface structurale ; 3) l’existence de la surface structurale cause le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales au niveau profond . Cet article donne une référence utile pour l’étude du ‘ problème d’indivudualité’( ou les situations anormaux) dans les données surveillantes de la déformation des pierres centrales de la génie civile.

The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000 - 1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72 - 80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65 - 85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read’s or Hoek & Brown’s yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Une méthode de prédiction des contraintes à la rupture autour d'excavation, établie sur la base de cartographie géologique et d'information sur la mécanique des roches, à été étudiée. Au total, 7 km d'un tunnel nouvellement percé à une profondeur de 1000 à 1400 m ont été cartographiés dans la mine de Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi en Finlande. La roche principale du site est une vulcanite dur ayant une résistance à la compression uniaxiale de 230 MPa (valeur moyenne) et une valeur GSI de 72 - 80. La contrainte in situ maximale autour du tunnel se situe entre 65 et 85 MPa. La prédiction des contraintes à la rupture observées a été évaluée en comparant les résultats d'une simulation 3D d'un tunnel avec trois critères de limite d'élasticité statistiques. Le critère de limite d'élasticité de Read ou de Hoek & Brown’s se trouvent être les plus important, même si les effets de l'anisotropie sont significatifs. Les paramètres les plus importants ayant une corrélation avec la rupture sont l'orientation du tunnel et la foliation de la roche. De plus, le type de roche et sa résistance à la compression, la forme du tunnel et les anomalies géologiques ont aussi leur importance. Finalement, un délai dans la cartographie résulte en une diminution nette des ruptures violentes. Basierend auf kartierten geologischen und felsmechanischen Informationen, wird eine Methode untersucht, um spannngsbedingtes Versagen um Ausbrüche herum vorherzusagen. Insgesamt werden 7 km neu ausgebrochenen Tunnels in einer Tiefe zwischen 1000 und 1400 m in der Inmet Pyhäsalmin Mine in Finnland kartiert. Das hauptsächlich vorkommende Gestein ist sehr hart und vulkanischen Ursprungs mit einer mittleren einachsialen Druckfestigkeit von 230 MPa (Medianwert) und einem GSI-Wert von 72-80. Die maximale In-situ-Spannung im Tunnel beträgt 65-85 MPa. Die Vorhersage von beobachteten Spannungsversagen werden weitergeführt indem man elastische 3-D-Simulationsergebnisse von Tunneln mit drei statistischen Fliesskriterien vergleicht. Read's oder Hoek's Fliesskriteria werden dabei als die relevantesten Kriterien angesehen, obwohl auch der Effekt der Anisotropie als wesentlich erachtet wird. Die wichtigsten Parameter für eine Korrelation von Spannungsversagen sind die Orientierung des Tunnels und die Schieferung der Gesteinsschichten. Desweiteren haben Gesteinsart, Tunnelprofil und geologische Anomalien ihren Einfluss. Ausserdem zeigt sich, dass eine Verzögerung bei der Kartierung die ausgeprägtesten Versagen deutlich verringern.

Abstract. Study on nonlinear damage localization process of rocks under water chemical corrosion is a more interesting topic in rock mechanics research world widely. It is very important in estimating long term stability of rock engineering, design of nuclear waste repository and its performance estimation, geothermal and petroleum development. This paper reports that new development of study on the topic, including methodology, results of meso-mechanical test, real-time CT scan test and acoustic emission test, temporal fractal behaviors, neural dynamic modeling and chemical-induced damage law, etc. This paper also discusses the research directions of the topic in the near future. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchung zum durch die chemische Corrosion induzierten Schaedigungsprozess ist einer der Trends im Gebiet der Felsmechanik. Sie ist zugleich ein sehr wichtiges Forschungsprojekt u.a. fuer geotechnische Langzeitstabilitaetsanalyse, Langzeitsicherheit eines Endlagers, Erdwaerme- und Erdoelfoerderung. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die neusten Entwicklungen in den folgenden Teilgebieten zusammen: Untersuchungsmethoden, Laborversuchsergebnisse der Mikromechanik, der Computer-Tomographie und der akustischen Emission, zeitabhaengige Fraktaleigenschaften, Modelle fuer die Nervendynamik sowie Modelle fuer chemie-induzierte Schaedigungen. Zum Schluss werden kuenftige Forschungsschwerpunkte bzw. –richtungen diskutiert. Résumé L’étude du processus de la localisation de l’endommagement du à l’érosion chimique est un thème d’actualité pour la mécanique des roches. Elle est également un sujet de recherche d’importance dans l’évaluation de la stabilité à long terme des ouvrages rocheux, l’analyse du system de stockage des déchets nucléaires et l’évaluation de son comportement, l’exploitation de l’énergie thermique et pétrolifère, etc. Cet article présente le développement actuel dans ce domaine, incluant la méthodologie d’étude sur le processus de la localisation de l’endommagement dû à l’érosion chimique, l’analyse des essais mécaniques avec l’observation microscopique, du balayage en temps réel (CT), et de l’émission acoustique. On aborde ainsi modèle des caractéristiques fractural du temps, le modèle de la mécanique dynamique neural, ainsi que la loi de comportement d’endommagement dû à l’effet chimique. Enfin, les perspectives relatives à ces études sont présentées et discutées.

Lack of visibility makes it difficult for continuous miner (CM) operators to judge the desired sump depth. The resulting inaccuracies have proven to lead to significant production losses. This problem of measuring the depth of sump has been addressed in the past and a few measurement techniques have evolved. Despite various attempts, a suitable commercial depth of sump sensor does not yet exist. A system using the Doppler effect has been patented, developed and successfully tested. The method is non-intrusive and involves a beam of microwaves being projected obliquely at the roof. The received signal is analysed with respect to the transmitted signal, yielding the desired measure of displacement. Surface tests have revealed an accuracy of a few centimetres. Underground simulation tests on a load haulage dump (LHD) machine have verified the repeatability under the harsh conditions of interest. The system is presently being installed on a CM where it is to undergo a long-term performance evaluation. This paper presents the theory behind such a system, the hardware developed, the signal processing requirements and an analysis of the test results.

Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

During the last few years a large number of pillars in different mines were investigated. Pillar conditions were evaluated using subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods. A critical comparison of the different methods showed some interesting coherence. This paper concentrates on experiences using the p-wave velocities as an indicator of pillar conditions. Während den letzten Jahren wurde eine große Anzahl von Bergfesten in verschiedenen Bergwerken auf ihren Zustand hin untersucht. Hierzu wurden subjektive, empirische, geophysikalische sowie numerische Methoden angewandt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen beim Einsatz der p-Wellengeschwindigkeit zur Beschreibung des Festenzustandes. Le condition géotechnique d’une grand nombre des piliers des mines souterraines différentes sont examinées ces dernières années. On a appliqué des méthodes subjectives, empiriques, géophysiques et numériques. Ce rapport occupe aux expériences avec l’application de la vélocité des ondes de compression pour tracer le condition des piliers.

As the Platinum mining industry expands in the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex it is increasingly evident that a major constraint to development is a lack of appropriate infrastructure. Of critical concern are water resources and spatial development / infrastructure. This paper identifies the context for infrastructure development in the Eastern Limb and two solutions that have evolved in the areas of water supply and spatial development. INTRODUCTION In an economics context, infrastructure is considered to be the structural elements of an economy which allow for the production of goods and services, without themselves being part of the production process. Despite the lack of a specific definition, infrastructure has largely become understood as to comprise road and rail transport systems, public transport systems, airports, public educational facilities, water supply and water resources, wastewater management, solid waste treatment and disposal, electric power generation and transmission, telecommunications and hazardous waste management systems. Critically it is important to understand that infrastructure not only comprises these physical elements but also the operating procedures, management practices and developmental policies that facilitate the effective utilization and development of the infrastructure in response to societal demand.

This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. La communication presente les equations d’équilibre limite pour l’analyse de blocs rocheux sur une pente. Les conditions de securité sont évaluées par une procédure numérique en Excel. Le logiciel UDEC a été exploité pour valider cette procedure. Un modèle probabilistique a été developpé pour définir les plus importants paramètres dans ces problèmes. Das Referat stellt die Grenzgleichgewichtsgleichungen für die Analyse von umstrürzenden Blök-ken auf eines Felshang vor. Die Sicherheitsbedingungen werden durch ein numerisches Verfahren mit Excel beurteilt. Um die Gültigkeit des Verfahrens festzustellen, wurde das Programm UDEC benutzt. Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.
