"INTRODUCTION Mine fires have occurred since underground mining of minerals began, and they are still occurring. The technical literature is replete with papers relating to mine fires.Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents require the collection and analyses of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the fire. Such atmos¬pheres are complex mixtures of gases (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23).3/SUMMARYExperiences at mine fires (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23) have proved conclusively that mine-air analyses furnish the only means of judging what is going on in a mine fire area. Mine-air analyses give evidence of conditions that require immediate protection, govern the order and control the manner in which a fire is fought, show the necessity of bulkheads and establish the places to construct them, indicate whether or not a fire is being controlled or is being extinguished, and govern procedure in sealing and unsealing mine fires.It is commonly believed that danger to life and property from mine-fire atmospheres is greatest in coal mines; this is true only to the degree that the explosion hazard is greater in coal mines than in noncoal mines because of the presence of combustible gases. The problem of gas poisoning is greater in noncoal mines because of the more frequent occurrence of poisonous and innocuous gases, oftentimes the lack of controlled ventilation, and usually greater difficulties in sealing mine-fire areas. Sulfide minerals present a serious hazard in many metal-mine fires when sulfur dioxide is formed. The country rock or ore body itself may contain or be limestone, which may be calcined. Emanations of carbon dioxide are found."

On-the-job training is a common means of training or retraining workers and the practice may seem simple and straightforward. Doing it effectively however requires more thought and preparation than simply having someone follow an experienced worker around and watch what they're doing. Over the years, various techniques and practices have evolved that pass on the skills and knowledge of a trainer or coach in a manner that leads an inexperienced trainee to really absorb the information being taught. On-the-job training thus becomes less a haphazard show-and-tell and more a real transfer of information. The goal of this document is to describe how to develop or manage an on-the-job training program so that information is passed on from trainer/coach to trainee efficiently and effectively. By efficient is meant the best use of time and resources of all those involved in the training process, and by effective is meant that the trainee truly learns the skills and internalizes the knowledge needed to perform the job well. The first part of the document discusses topics to think about when developing a formal on- the-job training program. A structure based on coaching is suggested. Then a workshop designed to prepare trainers as coaches is described. Workshop materials include an instructor’s guide and trainee workbook. These materials can be used to train coaches and to assist trainees as they go through the learning process. Content related to specific jobs can be added to these materials to create targeted on-the job-training manuals. Structuring a formal on-the-job training program It is likely that some form of on-the-job training (OJT) is being conducted at your workplace. The formality of that training can range from a structured program to an informal “follow Joe around” method. If your program is completely unstructured, it may not be meeting current training needs. Worse, it may perpetuate bad habits and create “trained” employees who are not given the same information or evaluated to the same standards. Wiehagen et al. comment that, “Success in using unplanned OJT is usually dependent on the luck of the draw, that is, whether the informal trainer is competent at the task he or she is teaching, is motivated to teach, can organize the job into logical components, and knows something about good practices in teaching and evaluating” (2002, p. 27). It is only through planning a structured OJT program that consistency can be created and maintained. At the least, all trainees who have successfully completed such a program can be expected to perform at an established level—they will know what they must do to be successful.

Bangladesh, whose population probably passed 100 million by yearend, remained one of the poorest countries in the world, with a per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $126.2 Its only economically significant mineral production was natural gas. A few other minerals or mineral-based commodities were also produced, generally for local consumption. These included cement, clays, nitrogenous fertilizers, limestone, salt, steel, and pilot plant production of ilmenite and rutile. Exploration for oil was a continuing quest, which was hindered by a lack of funding and a hesitancy on the part of foreign petroleum companies to make long-term or expensive exploration commitments. PODUCTION AND TRADE Production of natural gas continued to increase as more use was being made of the abundant gas reserves variously put at between 7 and 16 trillion cubic feet. The main consumers were nitrogenous fertilizer producers and electric powerplants, but other industries were converting to natural gas from imported coal or fuel oil wherever possible.

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. Massive roof overlying the working seam in longwall operations can cause hazards if it does not cave readily behind the face supports. The overhang thus formed can overload the supports and endanger personnel when it collapses suddenly as a large rock mass. This Bureau of Mines report proposes the use of a concentrated load, either strip or point loading, applied onto the roof with the help of the upward thrust of the face supports. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory to obtain information about break characteristics and the values of significant parameters of three sedimentary rocks. The results were used to determine the breaking load requirement for a strong roof possibly encountered in typical longwall operations. The results show that the roof slab of moderate thickness can be fractured within the load capacity of off-the-shelf powered supports.

This paper is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on the mineral resources of the Nation. It describes briefly the occurrence of sodium sulfate in Salt Lake and Tooele Counties, Utah, presents data on sampling, and describes ex-traction and refining raw material and a mining research project that has been conducted on the deposits. This report, one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the technology of titanium, describes the development of an electrorefining cell from which cathode deposits up to 30 inches long can be produced. Data show individual deposits to be homogeneous, comparable from top to bottom, and not varied in quantity or quality of metal over the entire length of the deposit. Investigations concerned with various diameter cathodes showed that cathode current efficiencies were materially reduced with cathodes less than 2 inches in diameter. Deposits produced on 1/2-inch-diameter cathodes showed cathode current efficiencies of 19 percent and on 1-inch cathodes, just over 22 percent, whereas deposits produced on 2- and 4-inch-diameter cathodes showed about 70-percent current efficiencies. A series of 20 deposits on 4-inch-diameter cathodes was produced under simulated production operation. The average current efficiency, based upon a divalent ion, was 72 percent with 11 1/2 pounds of metal produced per cycle of operation - 98.8 percent of which had a Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) of 80 or less.

Over and above the technical support arid consulting work described in the preceding Parts of this Volume, ADL staff also provided a wide range of additional technical assistance to the Bureau on an ad hoc basis over the course of the contract, and particularly in 1973. Some of these assignments were on tasks that temporarily assumed a high priority at PMSRC, requiring a fast response, while others were more suited to conventional schedules but on communication and location topics less directly related to those in the preceding Parts. Chapter I briefly describes some of the diverse short-term assignments while Chapters I1through V treat assignments on the other topics. I SHORT-TEXM ASSIGNMENTS A sampling of short-term, fast-response assignments undertaken on mine communications and miner location for PMSRC during 1973 are given below. These assignments included technical reviews, discussions and recommendations related to the theory, experimental data, designs, and hardware implementation of experimental CW and pulse miner location EM transmitters; preparation of technical performance specifications for a miniaturized preproduction prototype CW electromagnetic location transmitter; review of specifications for a seismic signal detection experimental study; participation in technical discussions and experiments with PMSRC and equipment suppliers regarding the UHF radio/radiax-cable communications installation in the Bruceton mine; participation in an informal conference to discuss mine communication and monitoring needs and preferences with representatives of the Bureau, mine operators, and equipment manufacturers; participation in technical discussions with representatives of a U.S. mine operator and CERCHAR* concerning the characterization of faults on trolley lines and means of improving their rapid detection;** recommendation of simple signal, noise, and ground fault measurements on mine phone lines; review of an inexpensive automatic telephone dialer; preliminary discussions regarding the feasibility of adapting and assembling a collection of available telephone industry carrier equipment for installation and test in an operating coal mine; evaluation of a proposed call alert mine paging system; review of hardware designs and future experiments for a mine communication sled; design critique of a proposed six-channel narrow-band FM voice modem for carrier communication on the mine phone line; preparation of technical performance

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating copper-nickel mattes to recover a copper-rich fraction suitable for processing by conventional copper metallurgical processes and a nickel-rich fraction suitable for processing in a hydrometallurgical nickel circuit. Distribution of cobalt and precious metals between the copper and nickel fractions was also determined. A matte containing a nominal 65 pct Cu, 9 pct Ni, 4 pct Fe, and 20 pct S was separated into a copper fraction that comprised 80 pct of the matte weight and contained 70 pct Cu and <1.5 pct Ni, plus a nickel fraction that contained 40 pct Ni and 30 pct Cu. Recoveries of copper and nickel into their respective fractions were 90 pct and 87 pct. These results were obtained in a laboratory flotation cell at a matte grind of 90 pct minus 500 mesh and a pH of 12.4, using 1.7 pounds DPG (diphenylguanidine) per ton of matte as collector and frother. Magnetic separation was used to remove metallic iron-nickel alloy from the copper fractions. Distribution of cobalt was about 70 pct to the nickel fraction and 30 pct to the copper fraction. Silver reported predominately to the copper fraction, while Au, Pt, and Pd were essentially entirely recovered in the nickel fraction.

Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior&apos;s continuing program for the development of Alaska&apos;s resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

he stiffness characteristics of longwall shields were investigated in this Bureau of Mines study. Since longwall strata activity is characterized by roof-to-floor and face-to-waste displacements, a model with two degrees of freedom was used to describe the load-displacement relationship of the shield structure. The model considers the support as an elastic body and relates horizontal and vertical resultant forces acting on the support to associated displacements as a function of the stiffness of the support structure. Stiffness coefficients under full canopy and base contact configurations were determined by controlled displacement loading of longwall shields in the Bureau&apos;s Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). Three two-legged longwall shields of different manufacture were investigated. The stiffness characteristics of these shields were evaluated relative to two parameters, namely, shield height and setting pressure. The test results indicate a reduction in shield stiffness for increasing height. Setting pressure was found to have less of an effect on shield stiffness, producing only a slight increase in stiffness as setting pressure increased. Similar trends were observed for all three shields, indicating a similarity in stiffness characteristics for shields of the same basic configuration.

A method of determining the strength of a mine roof layer in place is described in this report. The method was tested on a limestone roof layer 50 feet wide, 100 feet long, and 20 inches thick. In place measurements were accomplished by introducing air under pressure into a separation between the layer and the overlying roof, and as pressure was increased, the corresponding strain and deflection of the roof layer were measured until the roof failed. The ultimate strength of the roof agreed with the tensile strength of the roof rock (modulus of rupture) as determined in the laboratory; the modulus of elasticity as measured in place did not agree with the laboratory-determined values; the deflection and tensile strain in the layer in place showed good agreement with the theory of a body-loaded beam clamped at both ends. This procedure for determining the strength of a mine-roof layer is safer and less costly than successively widening a roof to failure. For example, it would have been necessary to mine the room to a width of 114 feet and a length of 228 feet to produce failure in this roof layer. The method is not necessarily limited to limestone; any thinly bedded rock type can be tested by this procedure when there is an open parting over the mined area.

The heats of formation at 298.15° K from the elements are NAB02, -233.2 ±0.6 kcal/mole; Na2B07, -786.4 ±1.0 kcal/mole; NaB305, -549.9 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B6013, -1,412.5 ±2.0 kcal/mole, The heats of formation from the constituent oxides are NaB02, -31.5 ±0.8 kcal/mole; Na2B407, -78.8 ±1.3 kcal/mole; NaB305, -44.1 ±0.8 kcal/mole; and Na2B8013, -96.7 ±1.5 kcal/mole.

Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.

This Bureau of Mines manual for design of surface mine haulage roads covers such aspects of haulage road design as road alignment (both vertical and horizontal), construction materials, cross slope, and drainage provisions. Traffic control and design of proper lane widths to promote safe vehicle movement are included, as are suggested criteria for road and vehicle maintenance and for runaway vehicle safety provisions. The aim of this publication is to provide those involved with surface mine haulage road design with a complete manual of recommended practices that, if implemented, will promote safer, more efficient haulage routes.

Introduction This Instructor’s Copy contains most of the materials trainers will need in order to use Drill Rig Incident (DRI). It includes suggestions for using the exercise, performance objectives for the training, master answer sheets, a scoring key, and a set of discussion notes that provides additional subject information. Four appendices are also included. Appendix A is the complete exercise problem booklet. It may be reproduced so that every person in the training class has one. Appendix B contains answer sheet blanks. The blanks are furnished if you choose to have the invisible ink answers that appear in appendix C printed on them at your location.3 Answer sheets are consumable. One is needed for each group of three to five persons who work the exercise together. An alternative is for each individual trainee to have his/her own answer sheet. Appendix D contains the 24-question pretest / posttest that was used in the field evaluation of the DRI exercise. Acknowledgment The authors thank Linda J. This paper presents plant design and cost estimates for limestone treatment of acid mine water covering a wide range of quality and quantity conditions. The treatment process consists of limestone neutralization, aeration, solids settling, and concentration. The design criteria for the various operation functions are based on pilot plant performance, laboratory data, and established mine water treatment standards. Unit costs have been assumed and are related to general market prices and conditions. These estimates serve as preliminary indicators of what it would cost to construct and operate a mine water treatment plant.
