This Information Circular presents a brief history of the lead-acid battery and describes ways to prevent serious injury from battery explosions when servicing and charging lead-acid batteries, particularly in the surface mining industry. The Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, battery manufacturers, and the mining industry have all contributed information as well as recommendations for injury-free handling for this report.

Sulfur content data from Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 1,060 United States crude oils were used with crude oil production data for the years 1956-66 to prepare tables and charts that illustrate the volume and percentage distribution according to sulfur content of crude oil produced in 10 geographical areas of the United States. Similar relationships for foreign crude oils based on analyses of 201 crude oils and production during 1966 are illustrated for Africa, Canada, Middle East, and South America. Tables are included giving field name, sulfur content, geologic name and age of producing formation, depth of producing formation, and production during 1966 for 882 United States crude oils and 201 .foreign crude oils. Between 1955 and 1966 the average sulfur content of crude oils produced in the United States decreased from 0.73 to 0.67 percent.

Introduction The Cost program was developed to provide the planning engineer with a tool to evaluate the cost implications of the technical mine design decisions. Direct costing methods are employed, where feasible, to provide greater detail and accuracy in the primary cost centers. Options have been provided in the cost computation, economic analysis, and output data subsystems to increase the flexibility of the system. Computer Program The program is written in Fortran IV for use in the IBM System 360/370 computers. i. Main - The main routine reads and stores input data from three sources, user input, Cost Data Library, and data transfer from the Master Design Simulator. Data is trans¬ferred to the appropriate subroutines, as they are called, by means of labeled common blocks. ii. Subroutine CSTCOM - is a data modification routine which computes the peripheral charges related to labor and supervisory costs. iii. Subroutine MANPWR - interrogates section data to determine the total labor and supervisory costs for each cost center. iv. Subroutine CAPCST - computes the total capital investment for each cost center, including the economic life and salvage value of each element. Chalcopyrite (CuFeSz) concentrates produced on the Lead Belt of Missouri typically contain 28 pct Cu and from 0.5 to 1.5 pct each of nickel and cobalt. Most of the nickel and cobalt are present as the mineral siegenite, (Ni,Co)3S4, almost none of which is recovered presently. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has been conducting research on the chalcopyrite to produce a marketable fraction enriched in cobalt and nickel. Ferric chloride leaching of various chalcopyrite (copper) concentrates has yielded residues containing from 10.2 to 16.2 pct Ni and 8.3 to 11.4 pct Co with recoveries of approximately 79 pct. In another approach, laboratory froth-flotation tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of regrinding, roasting, baking, and steaming prior to flotation, with a variety of reagents. The best laboratory results were obtained after regrinding the copper concentrate to 94 pct minus 400 mesh and floating the chalcopyrite at natural pH (6.5) with 0.48 pound of sodium diethyldithiophosphate and 0.01 pound of sodium cyanide per ton of concentrate. This procedure yielded a tailings assaying 20.4 pct Cu, 5.2 pct Ni, and 3.45 pct Co. The tailings contained 67.2 pct of the nickel and cobalt and 15.9 pct of the copper originally in the copper concentrate; the remainder of the values reported to the flotation concentrate, which analyzed 29.6 pct Cu. To verify the laboratory flotation results, a 60 kg/hr process demonstration unit (PDU) was constructed in the Cominco American Magmont mill, Bixby, Mo.

Comprehensive ventilation surveys are made to review the adequacy of the mine system with regard to both statutory requirements and/or company policy, to evaluate improvements to the current ventilation system and to plan for £stun expansion. If computer simulation is to be used for these purposes, accurate quantity and pressure measurements become an absolute necessity since the validity of the computer generated output is heavily dependent on the accuracy of the input data. Consequently ventilation surveys that are run to generate input data for computer simu¬lation must use the best data collection procedures to guarantee as accurate results as are possible. These requirements have led to modifications in procedures that are used for routine ventilation surveying. McElroy and Kingery (1957) have recommended that pressures be measured independent of quantities since minor changes in mine conditions have a greater effect on absolute pressure measurements than on quantity measure¬ments. They estimate that, for large mines, a pressure survey may take only 1 to 3 days while the corresponding quantity survey would require 1 to 3 weeks. Although this procedure would undoubtedly lead to more ac¬curate pressure measurements, its use for the development of computer input data is not recommended for the following reasons. Atkinson's equation, H = RQ2, is used in computer oriented analysis to develop the airway resistance, R, based on quantity and pressure loss measure¬ments. It can easily be seen that since R a 1/Q2 and R a H, the effect of errors in quantity measurement is, in fact, more significant than those in pressure measurement. Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of longwall plow operations to identify dust sources and existing control technology. Three longwalls employing either the high-speed overtaking or conventional method of mining were surveyed. Principal operating parameters and on-site dust control technology at the time of each survey are described. Short-term gravimetric and instantaneous sampling results are discussed in detail. The relationship between longwall dust levels and dust control technology was examined.

An evaluation is presented for an ammonium sulfate leaching process designed to extract manganese from Cuyuna, Minn., and Aroostook, Maine, deposits. In this process the manganese and iron in the ore are reduced to MnO and Fe 3 0 4 in a shaft furnace; the reduced ore is then leached with ammonium sulfate solution forming soluble manganous sulfate while leaving most of the iron undissolved. After filtration, the manganese and some impurities are precipitated from solution as carbonates which are then pelletized and calcined to form a product composed mainly of Mn3O4. The plants are designed to produce 100 tons per day of manganese contained in a product that is suitable for the production of ferromanganese. A byproduct credit, together with the extra processing cost, is included for the Cuyuna ore processing plants because Fe2O3 may be recovered for use in blast furnaces. The estimated operating costs per ton of manganese, excluding income taxes and return on investment, are: [ ] The process with or without byproduct recovery, when treating Cuyuna or Aroostook ores, is not economically competitive with ores available at $71.43 per ton of contained manganese.

From the chemist's point of view it would be ideal if specifications for coke for any stated purpose could be written on the basis of chemical composition and burning characteristics. Unfortunately this is not possible. In fact, the physical properties of a coke are often of such major importance as to render any specified chemical requirements totally inadequate to show the quality of coke desired. For example, a furnace coke may admirably fill all chemical requirements, such as for low phosphorus, sulphur, moisture, and high fixed carbon, and still be too soft to support the burden of the furnace without excessive crushing. Again, a domestic coke though a good fuel as judged from Chemical analysis, may be of unmarketable size. Thus one can not define the quality of a coke for a specified purpose without taking into account both its chemical and physical characteristics even when this has been done the specification may fail because neither coke user nor producer can accurately define by quantitative tests the qualities most desired. In other words, there is need of accurate test methods for measuring the properties of coke and, what is equally important, for correlating the results with the behavior of the coke in use. Coke quality is determined by the kind of coal used, the coking process, and the type of equipment used in the coking process. Chemical analysis of the coals, together with small-scale coking tests, will give a good indication of their suitability; but, in general, coke must be produced on an industrial scale and tested in the equipment for which it is intended before conclusive information as to its quality is obtained.

"The discovery of large deposits of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaSO4.2H2O) in Texas has led to an investigation of possible industrial proecsses for the extraction of potash from this material. This mineral was first discovored in small quantities in the European potash deposits in or about the year 1800. Chemists fire thought it to be a form of calcium sulphate, but a more accurate analysis by Strohmiyer indicated the composition as given by the above formula.The decomposition of polytalite by aster is very slow and results in the formation of a layer of gypsum at the surface of the polyhalite which retarts the solution of the potaseium and magnesium sulphates. To obtain a substantial yield of K2S04 in solution it is necessary to use large amounts of water at room temperature, for he concentration of K2S04 is limited by the low solubility of syngonite (K2S04.CaS04.H2O) whereas at 100º C. several days boiling are necessary to obtain more than a 6 per cent K2S04 solution even when finely powdered polyhalite is employed.In 1854 H. Rose discovered that calcination, followed by leaching with water, resulted in a larger extraction of the potassium and magnesium sulphates, as compared with leaching without precalcination. During the course of a series of investigations concerning formation of oceanic salt deposits, Van't Hoff and his pupils obtained sufficient data to construct the equilibrium diagram for the system K+Mg+SO4--Ca++.H2O for 25° C. and for 83° C. These data are very well summarized. in the International Critical Tables' and by Boeke and Eitel. From a consideration of the diagrams for 83º C. one would conclude that an extraction of polyhalite with moderate amounts of water at 33º C. would result in a solution whose maximum concentration of K2So4 would be about 3.6 grams per 100 grams of water and of M2SO; about 4.0 grams per 100 grams of water, corresponding to equilibriumwith the solid phases: Polyhalite potassiam-calcium pentasulphate and anhydrite.The fact that it has been found possible to obtain as high as 11.4 grams of K2S04 per 100 grams of water (see table 6) and an equivalent amount of MgSo4 (8.1 grams per 100 grams of water was obtained corresponding to a ratio K2/Mg of 0.98; indicates that the formation of these complex salts is very slow. To be sure, this results was obtained at 100° C. instead of 83º C. However, the work of Anderson and Nestall 9 on the double salts of calcium and potassium sulphates at 100º C. indicates that the diagram at 100º C. C. would not be greatly different from that at 83º C. This slow rate of approach to equilibrium when combined with precalcination of,of polyhzli-,a is the 17,asis of some of the more p:olisinE methods of extracting potash from polyhalite."

Expenditures to advance scientific technology in general reached an all time high in 1965 with some $22.2 billion estimated to have been allocated by government and industry. Federal Government expenditures were estimated at $15.4 billion, with almost 90 percent of the funds devoted to programs involving defense, atomic energy, and outer space efforts. With this massive effort in the United States and a very impressive effort elsewhere in the world, there is little wonder that many new metallurgical developments were announced in the technical press during the year. No effort has been made to cover all aspects of the industry, but a few of the developments are described in this chapter.

A FORTW IV computer program has been written to calculate thermodynamic properties over a desired temperature range from spectroscopic data. This program computes heat capacities, enthalpies, and entropies for monatomic, diatomic, linear, and nonlinear polyatomic gases. This research is part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of mineral technology.

Goals of the Bureau of Mines include utilizing readily available minerals as substitutes for scarce mineral commodities and minimizing occupational hazards associated with mineral processing occupations. Therefore, the Tuscaloosa Research Center investigated using rapid-set cement as a suitable molding sand binder for small ferrous castings; currently petroleum-based binders are used. Substitution of a rapid-set cement would eliminate organic vapors associated with the petroleum-based binders; these vapors constitute occupational hazards and environmental pollutants. A binder containing 60 percent white portland cement (WPC) and 40 percent calcium aluminate (CA) would be an acceptable and economic substitute for petroleum-based binders where the foundry requirements are compatible with its limitations. It produced a set time and a pattern strip time of less than 1 hour. Cement, sand, and water mixtures developed compressive strengths from about 40 to 75 psi after 2 hours and from 120 to 130 psi after 24 hours. Tensile strengths of 18 to 22 psi were obtained after 2 hours, increasing to 30 to 35 psi after 24 hours. The addition of about 1 percent polyphosphate to the sand-cement-water mixture doubled the compressive strength and increased the tensile strength about 50 percent after 4 hours, but also increased the set time from 30 minutes to 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Po1yvinylacetate (PVA) resin latex additions resulted in rapid strength development. When castings were poured into the cement-bonded molds, the surface finish was fair to good on gray iron castings, but some areas of burn-on were present on steel castings. Using a graphite wash on the cement-bonded molds produced good surfaces on gray iron castings.

This report deals with the processing and marketing of iron and steal scrap in the intermountain States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and the northwestern Plains States of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The quantity and quality of iron and steel scrap consumed in both the steel mills and iron foundries in these States in 1964 were decided by (1) the type of facilities used to produce an end product; (2) the availability of a dependable source of iron and steel scrap at competitive prices; and (3) the, ratio of the cost of iron in iron ore to iron in scrap. In recent years the quantity of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced has decreased. The major individual. consumers of iron and steel scrap were the steel mills in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, foundries in Utah and Arizona, and copper leaching, operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. About 2 million tons of iron and steel scrap was used by the iron and steel industry in 1964. Although there has been a decline in the amount of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced because of changes in steelmaking methods, there has been a slight increase in the overall quantity of scrap used because of the increase in ingot production. It is estimated that the scrap consumption in the steel industry will increase by 19 percent by 1980. In addition to the scrap consumed by the steel industry, 273,000 tons of ferrous scrap were used by copper-leaching operations. Thirty-one percent of the ferrous scrap used by the steel industry in 1964 was purchased from dealers and other sources. The CF&I Steel Corp. (formerly The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp.) at Pueblo, Colo., complemented its blast- and open-hearth-furnace operations with basic-oxygen converters in 1962. The basic-oxygen and open-hearth furnaces were charged with 30 and 90 percent scrap, respectively. Future use of the open-hearths would probably be used to supplement ingot production requirements. Because it was more economical to use less scrap and a high molten-metal charge, the United States Steel Corp. at Geneva, Utah, which uses the open-hearth process to make steel, charges the furnaces with 25 to 35 percent scrap. The Allison Steel Manufacturing Co. at Tempe, Ariz., uses a 100 percent scrap charge in its electric furnace. Although it was estimated that there were 327,000 tons of various grades of motor vehicle scrap generated in 1963, no estimates were made concerning the total quantity and grade of scrap available in the area. Most of the scrap used in the steelmaking industry originated within the area. It was advantageous to sell scrap generated in eastern Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to markets in the Midwest because of freight costs.

The flammability of trichloroethylene vapors in air has been determined in a 7-inch cyclindrical vessel. Saturated flammable mixtures were formed with air at atmospheric pressure between 30° C (86° F) and 82° C (180° F); the trichloroethylene concentrations at these temperatures are 12.5 (lower) and 90 (upper) volume-percent, respectively. Further study is necessary to assess the effects of different variables on the flammability of this material. INTRODUCTION Trichloroethylene (TCE) (ClHC = CCl2), sold under various trade names (Blacosolv, Perm-A-Clor, Tri, Triad, Triclene, Trivec, Tromex, Vapoclean, Vapoclor, Westrosol, etc.), is an important industrial chemical. A summary of its physical and chemical properties is given in table 1. It is used to degrease metals, leather, and textiles, to extract residual oils from vegetable oil cakes, for dry cleaning, and in soap. It is a powerful solvent for fats, resins, bitumens, rubber, sulfur, and phosphorus. Several explosions in which trichloroethylene was involved prompted an investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the conditions under which such accidents can occur.

Ultrafine grinding of the industrial minerals mica, pyrophyllite, talc, marble, barite, and fluorite was accomplished using the Bureau-developed and patented attrition-grinding process. The materials, representing minerals of diverse physical characteristics, were batch ground in a 10-inch-diameter machine using statistically designed experimental test programs. The tests were made to determine large effects of variables such as feed pulp density, grinding medium size, and quantity of the electrical energy consumed during grinding on product particle size and bulk density. In designing the test programs, it was assumed that there was no interaction between the variables. Relatively coarse commercial flotation concentrates of mica, barite, and fluorspar and mine-run products of pyrophyllite, talc, and marble were readily ground into subsieve size ranges. Considering the great amount of particle size reduction obtained, the electrical energy requirements for grinding were very low. In general, the test results indicated that the best conditions for particle size reduction were approached when grinding with the coarser fraction of sand grinding media, the higher-sand-to-mineral weight ratio, and the higher feed pulp density.

The Bureau of Mines has developed analytical methods, primarily gas chromatographic, for measurement of exhaust oxygenates produced from selected simple fuels. The resulting data were used to estimate levels of carbonyls and noncarbonyl oxygenates in exhaust from gasoline fuels. Estimated noncarbonyl oxygenates in gasoline exhaust may comprise as much as 30 pct of total oxygenates which include unsaturated carbonyls and noncarbonyls believed to be significant potential pollutants.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coal beds in Allegheny County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 7 million tons of coal was produced in Allegheny County in 1957. Of this, more than 5 million tons was cleaned mechanically in nine cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines estimated that, as of January 1, 1953, more than 384 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or thicker.

Significant portions of the present Federal regulations for certification of closed-circuit breathing apparatus (42 CFR 84) are not quantitative. The human-subject testing portion of the regulations specifies activities rather than metabolic work rates; however, heavy human subjects have higher oxygen consumption, CO2 production, and ventilation rates than lighter human subjects performing the same activities. This means that apparatus certified using different human subjects have effectively passed different tests. In addition, apparatus performance is monitored only during selected intervals of testing, and always during rest, rather than during the entire performance period. Further, testing is arbitrarily terminated at specific rated durations, leaving unknown the performance during the remaining duration. Duration itself is misleading to users who believe that the apparatus will last a certain time no matter how much they weigh or how hard they work. The actual duration obtained from an apparatus, however, is highly variable, being inversely proportional to the work rate at which it is used. In this report, recommendations are made to (1) replace the present regulations for certification of closed-circuit breathing apparatus with quantitative tests specifying metabolic work rate rather than activity,(2) continuously monitor relevant physiological stressors, (3) continue testing until exhaustion of the oxygen source, and (4) classify closed-circuit breathing apparatus by quantity of usable oxygen, i.e., capacity, rather than by duration. Physiology-based stressor levels are suggested as well.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals4/ and. investigations of their chemical and physical properties.5/ The coal represented by the sample from weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.
