The first study of this subject hits been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal-mining industry to standardize the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which slay be found in many of them and the consequent liability of costly litigation. In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining; Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the 'State have been divided into eight geological districts, each district being treated separately. This report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopped that studies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.

The Bureau of Mines studied lignite pulverization in a laboratory ring-roller mill. Both moisture content and the source of lignite were found to be important factors in pulverizer operation. Reduction of moisture content increased capacity and reduced power consumption, but predrying is more effective than in-the-mill drying in improving pulverizer operation. A combination predrier-crusher system produced significant improvements but other efforts to improve in-the-mill drying in the test mill were unsuccessful. Pulverization of frozen lignite was found to seriously reduce pulverizer capacity and increase power requirements.

An apparatus for determining trace impurities in Grade-A helium by mass spectrometer methods was designed and built by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Grade-A is the designation for helium commercially produced by the Bureau. Its nominal purity is 99.995 percent. The device, following a suggestion by Deaton, concentrates the impurities in the helium by freezing them out in a coil-and-trap assembly cooled by liquid helium. A known volume of helium is passed through the trap, the concentration ratio determined, and samples of the concentrated impurities are analyzed by mass spectrometer methods. The apparatus has been in service for approximately 20 months and has satisfactorily met all requirements. Over 200 analyses were made of helium contained in conventional cylinders, obtained from the Amarillo, Exell, Otis, and Navajo Helium Plants, during the 6-month period ending March I, 1959. Total impurity concentrations, in parts per million, were as follows: Amarillo, 19.1; Exell, 17.1; Otis, 11.3; and Navajo, 6.6. Neon and nitrogen were the major impurities. Complete data are shown in table 4 in the body of this report.

The pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark \vas investigated in relation to its potential use for rock fragmentation. The study established (1) the relation between the peak discharge current and the peak wave pressure; (2) the relationships among the peak wave pressure, the discharge voltage, and the spark gap width; (3) the type and pulse duration of the generated wave; (4) the percentage of energy transmitted in the spark as a function of spark gap width and discharge voltage; and (5) the percentage of energy converted into the pressure wave as a function of gap width and discharge voltage. Spark-generated fractures were studied in two-and three-dimensional rock and plastic specimens. The laboratory results indicated that the pressure pulse generated by an underwater spark is a potential practical tool for rock fragmentation. The paper contains an appendix describing the capacitive pressure gage specially developed for the laboratory tests.

Many of the support concepts currently used in the United States originated in South Africa. These products include the Hercules Crib1, Propsetter, MX Prop, Rocprop, and Spider Prop. Another recent development has been the introduction of hydraulic prestressing units, such as the Jackpot system, to various U.S. standing support systems. Several other prop-type supports with similarities to systems used in South Africa are in use in U.S. coal mines. Some exciting new developments that improve the installation and yield performance of props are also underway. In addition to prop-type supports, crib-type supports and single-unit systems such as the Can support are also frequently utilized in longwall tailgates in the U.S. The goal in U.S. support development is to enhance roof support capability while alleviating material handling barriers to reduce injuries associated with support handling and installation. Support products are generally full-scale tested at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the unique Mine Roof Simulator load frame. The performance testing protocol is designed to simulate the full range of load conditions that occur in underground mining to identify the performance deficiencies and limitations of the support products. Once the products complete the performance evaluation, they are implemented into the NIOSH Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP). STOP is a window’s based software program that was developed by NIOSH for facilitating the design of standing roof support systems. STOP has become an industry standard to compare the performance capabilities and facilitate the application of these support products into various mining conditions. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the support design and application philosophy in the United States.

Exhaust emissions were measured from 25 aircraft turbine engines using Jet A fuel. Analytical apparatus, procedures, and results are described. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aldehydes were measured at engine operating modes representing power levels used in airline operation. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions were highest at idle and lowest at takeoff; oxides of nitrogen were lowest at idle and highest at takeoff. Of the total oxides of nitrogen emitted, nitrogen dioxide constituted from 10 to 100 pct, depending on the exhaust gas temperature. Engines retrofitted with smoke-reducing burner cans produced less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions, and slightly more oxides of nitrogen then engines with standard burner cans.

"The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., has conducted a series of experiments an air measurement in fan-pipe installa¬tions in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-3. The chief purpose was to determine the friction factors for different types and sizes 3f fan piping, but much attention was devoted to methods of air measurement, not only with respect to the methods used for friction factor tests, but also to com¬parison with other methods.The air flow was measured simultaneously at two points 380.6 feet apart in six different fan-pipe installations, each over 500 feet in overall length, in a rock cross cut adjacent to an air shaft,The air pressure was regulated by two sinoco multivane fans, driven by 7 ½ h.p. motors, the fans being connected in tandem so that one discharged into the intake of the other through a short connector and the latter discharged into the line through a straight connection equipped with a honeycomb of 4-inch squares or S radial vanes to prevent spiral flow of air, At each point where it was desired to measure the air flow, measuring sections equipped with piezometer rings pierced for easy insertion of pitot tubes, thermometers, etc. Piezometer static pressures were used in all the tests as standard, and dynamic or total pressures only were obtained with the pitot tubes, except for purposes of comparison.The tubes had special guide blocks, designed especially for underground work. To insure greater accuracy two tubes were used simultaneously, in order to obtain the velocity pressure at the center of the section simultaneously with that nearer the circumference, so that the mean velocity would be determined as accurately as possible. The tubes were held in proper place by means of flat guide boards. Velocity pressures were measured in manometers."

A mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines revealed no mines or prospects and no past or present mining claims in the Agua Tibia Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The area is underlain mainly by weakly foliated gabbro similar to rock that has hosted gem- and lithium-bearing pegmatites in the Pala district about 6 mi to the south. However, no gem- or lithium-bearing pegmatites have been discovered in the WSA. Nearby quarries in the gabbro have yielded rock for facing and dimension stone. No sand, gravel, or energy (oil, gas, coal, or geothermal) resources were identified.

This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. "The central rescue station maintained jointly by several mining com¬panies in a district, is gaining in popularity in a large number of mining districts throughout the country. A very efficient first-aid and mine rescue association, with rescue station, is in operation in 'the Globe-Miami, Arizona, district. This association, known as the ""Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First-Aid Association""; was organized on January 1, 1918. Due to the effective work of this organization, several incipient mine fires have been extinguished before the fire got under headway and before any severe damage was done.The mine rescue station, which is situated on the highway between the towns of Globe and Miami, Arizona, is centrally located with respect to the various mines in the district. The station was completed, and a full craw em-ployed for conducting it work on January 1, 1920.The directors and other officers of the association are selected from the mine officials whose properties are served by it. It includes seven large metal mining and metallurgical companies in the Globe-Miami district. The names of the companies, together with the number of men employed by each follows.A director is in charge of the station; he performs the executive work, and, is the managing head of all training in first aid and mine rescue. The director is assisted by three station attendants, one of whom takes the morning shift, another, the evening shift, and the third, the night shift. They exchange shifts every two weeks. As three shifts are maintained, an attendant is on duty at all times. He answers emergency calls in case of fires or accidents, assists with the first-aid and mine rescue training, the inspection of the first-aid boxes and supply bases that are located at the various mines, and attends to miscellaneous duties in connection with the operation and maintenance of the station."

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled sur¬face hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diam¬eter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a verti¬cal depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 m (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

In investigating general problems that relate to the fuel resources of this country, and in testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the Government, the Bureau of Mines has given considerable attention to the efficiency and economic value of producer-gas power plants. Government inquiries during the past eight years not only have shown a very low fuel consumption per horsepower-hour for these plants but have demonstrated conclusively the possibility of utilizing commer- cially low grades of bituminous coal, lignite, and peat in plants prop- erly designed for the use of these fuels. The anthracite plant has been recognized as a commercial possibility for several years, although the cost of the fuel used has in general restricted these plants to com- paratively small units. The commercial development of the producer-gas power plant in the United States has been largely within the past six or eight years. In 1909 the United States Geological Survey published in a bulletin entitled "Recent Development of the Producer-Gas Power Plant in the United States" a list of producer-gas power-plant installations. The data presented in that bulletin showed a strong development in this field and led to much conjecture as to the future of this type of power. Owing to the extensive introduction of the steam turbine, however, many persons predicted the almost immediate doom of the producer-gas plant. In addition to the inroads made by this formida- ble rival, the interest of the gas-engine enthusiasts became centered to such an extent in the oil engine that the gas producer was relegated to second place by many and absolutely abandoned by some. During the past three years the belief of many who were formerly firm be- lievers in the gas producer has been that this type of power has reached its height of development in this country and that from a commercial standpoint it can no longer be regarded as a complete success. Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

The method of constant compositions involves the determination of the time required for the attainment of a given conversion at various temperatures. Heretofore, it has been used in evaluating the energy of activation only. A development of the method, made in the present study, makes possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and the frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. INTRODUCTION Kinetics of reactions are best analyzed in the light of the mechanism, energy requirements, and forces involved in the reaction. Such physico-chemical information is not often available in solid state phase transformations. The reaction rates are followed by changes in a physical property during the course of the reaction, and repeating the experiment at different temperatures permits the determination of activation energy only. The possibility of a complete kinetic analysis by such a purely "phenomenological" approach has been questioned.4/ In this report a method is developed making possible the evaluation of the functional dependence upon composition and frequency factor in addition to the energy of activation. The application of the method to a study of solid state order-disorder changes is demonstrated.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.

Provide roof to floor closure rate measurements during underground mining, especially retreat mining of coal pillars, thereby helping the miners predict an imminent roof fall. Approach An electronic device and rugged potentiometric extensometer were developed to provide a means fur measuring total closure and the rate of closure. How It Works An intrinsically safe, battery operated instrument is enclosed in a rugged, hand carried field case. The unit is constructed using low-power, integrated circuits to provide minimal battery drain. Two digital Light Emitting Diode (LED) readouts are used; one displays the rate, the other displays the total closure. The unit will measure one extensometer continuously or two extensometers alternately. Two potentiometric extensometers with a closure measurement range of 6 inches are attached to the readout unit. To improve a miner's chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user's exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.

Improve transmission of data from an underground mine monitoring system to a remote, mass-data storage system. Background Instrumentation systems in underground mines must operate under environmental extremes of dust and humidity, local electromagnetic/radio frequency (EM/RF) interference fields, and potentially explosive atmospheres. During a recent roof-bolt study performed by the Bureau of Mines, it was necessary to transmit a large quantity of data to a data storage system. Conventional wire cable transmission presented several limitations which often required special electrical isolation or physical protection. Because conventional wire cable presented certain problems, the Bureau of Mines investigated alternative means of data transmission. The research investigation led to the selection of fiber optic cable for data transmission applications. The fiber optic method of data transmission offers several advantages: ? Since the transmission medium consists of light waves, it is safe to use in gassy mines. Where applicable, MSHA permissibility standards for peripheral devices must be met. ? It is lightweight and rugged. ? It can operate up to 131000 feet (4km) without repeaters and without EM/RF field interference.
