To provide a relatively structurally stable form of dried lump lignite, two North Dakota lignites from Mercer County were dried by the Fleissner process in an atmosphere of saturated steam at 200, 300, and 370 p.s.i.a. pressure, corresponding to steam temperatures of 382°, 417°, and 437° F., respectively. Two series of experiments were made at each test pressure with the individual lignites. In one series, the autoclave was preheated to the processing temperature before charging the lignite; in the other the lignite was charged into the autoclave at room temperature. In each case, heat losses were determined by blank tests of steam consumption over a similar operating cycle with the empty autoclave. The degree of moisture removal and net steam consumption were calculated from material balances. The amount of water removed as a liquid from the two North Dakota lignites during the heating and steaming periods was compared with results calculated from previously published data on drying Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal. These lignites, covering a wide geographical area, had original moisture contents ranging from 35 to 49 percent. The Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal are considered to be of Miocene Age, and the Dakota lignites belong to the Paleocene.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,421 samples, representing the products of 131 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. The conversion of dilute sulfur dioxide gas into sulfuric acid by autoxidation in mechanical cells of the flotation or gas absorber types was investigated. Bench-scale tests were made with sulfur dioxide-air mixtures to determine the influence of several factors on autoxidation of sulfur dioxide, using iron and manganese salts as catalysts. The laboratory investigation subsequently was extended to pilot plant acid-making tests, using a modified turbomixer gas absorber having a 12-inch-diameter impeller. Sulfur dioxide gas was produced for the tests by roasting pyrite in a fluidized-bed reactor. In the better tests, made with manganese sulfate as the catalyst, the equivalent of 1,000 pounds of anhydrous H2SO4 was produced per 24 hours as a 10-percent solution; power consumption was 0.2 kwhr per pound of equivalent anhydrous acid synthesized. The batch and continuous tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing dilute sulfuric acid by autoxidation of sulfur dioxide gas in mechanical cells when converting pyrite roaster or waste smelter gases.

The 1952 Annual Report of the West Virginia Department of Mines lists seven beds that are being mined in Mingo County, of which the Cedar Grove is the most important. The Cedar Grove, Alma, and Coalburg contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,007 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 2,396 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

As part of a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates the thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to sulfur (S°). The research described herein is focused on the latter half of the process. It was demonstrated that calcium sulfide could be converted to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), and that ammonium bisulfide could be oxidized by air in the presence of a catalyst, to elemental sulfur, which was adsorbed on the catalyst. Two methods for recovering sulfur from the catalyst were developed: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and (2) leaching the sulfur from the catalyst with liquid anhydrous ammonia. Over 90 pct of the sulfur adsorbed on activated carbon (the catalyst) was recovered by both methods. Based upon the encouraging laboratory investigations, a hydrometallurgical scheme was proposed for the overall conversion of calcium sulfide to elemental sulfur.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. The coal-mining industry of the United States finds difficulty not only in making ends meet financially but also in operating with anything like reasonable safety. The record to date has not been particularly good as to either finance or safety, but at least in some phases or safety there are indications of better times to come. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1929, only 139 lives were lost in explosions in our mines as against 342 lost during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1928; this decrease in such fatalities is definitely a matter for satisfaction. During the fiscal year July 1, 1928, to June 30, 1929, the attention of the safety division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines was directed to 38 mine explosions in the United States. Two explosions were in non-coal mines, one in a semianthracite mine, two in anthracite mines, and 33 in bituminous mines. These were not all major explosions - that is, explosions in which five or more lives were lost; in some of the explosions no lives were lost, while in others fewer than five fatalities resulted. Table 1 gives data on the explosions, showing the number of mines using open or closed lights and the number of explosions with resulting deaths, by causes, for each State.

The Bureau of Mines recently initiated a study of geologic features that contribute to roof instability in western U.S. underground coal mines. The purpose of the study is to provide information for use in ground control planning and safety hazard reduction in that region, where mining activity has been increasing. Hazardous geologic conditions were surveyed in selected underground coal mines in Utah and Colorado, and both depositional and structural features were identified as potential ground hazards. Although the conditions found do not differ in kind from hazardous geologic conditions in the Eastern United States, they do differ in intensity of occurrence and relative importance. Three depositional features dominate where unstable roof occurs in western underground coal mines: paleochannel deposits, crevasse splay deposits, and flood basin deposits. Three structural features identified as hazardous, but not so widespread or common as the depositional hazards, are faulting, jointing, and igneous intrusions. This survey establishes a foundation for future studies aimed at reducing and preventing ground control accidents in western coal mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has continued its investigation of chemical additive drilling fluids that produce a zero surface charge (ZSC) on a rock to better define the boundary conditions of the phenomenon. Laboratory drilling tests were performed on Minnesota taconite, Tennessee marble, and Sioux Quartzite using diamond-impregnated coring bits or tungsten carbide spade bits. Drilling fluids were made from chemical additives such as inorganic salts, cationic surfactants, cationic polymers, acids, or nonionic polymers in either distilled, deionized water (DDIW), mine pond water, mine well water, or tap water. These additives were tested below, at, and above their respective ZSC concentrations. Penetration and bit life improvements obtained with ZSC concentration solutions ranged from 88 and 56 pct, respectively, to over 650 pct and over 400 pct, respectively, for the additives tested. Polyethylene oxide (PEO) was found to be the best additive for ZSC-controlled drilling because a continuous range of PEO solution concentrations produced the enhanced ZSC-controlled drilling performance.

The heat contents of thermally dried lignite, subbituminous B coal, and their corresponding low-temperature chars were determined at various temperatures below the highest temperature to which these materials had been exposed before testing. Similar studies were made on high-temperature char and coke, spent shale, and ash prepared from both coal and spent shale. Heat content of the carbonaceous materials tested correlated well with temperature. Heat con-tent results for spent shale compared well with the published results. Statistical analysis of experimental data together with published information showed moisture, volatile matter, carbon content, and temperature to be the principal variables influencing the specific heat of coal. The specific heat of devolatilized carbonaceous substances, char and coke, approached that of graphite as the carbonization temperature was increased. The elemental specific heats of coal constituents, estimated from the ultimate analysis and the specific heat of coal, compared favorably with published elemental specific heats.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupation-al Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include(1) reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus,(2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers, (3) diminished ability to monitor the work environment (i.e., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of various bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids on respiratory burst activity of alveolar macrophages and to characterize the interaction of these drugs with alveolar phagocytes. BBIQ alkaloids were chosen for study because they exhibit a wide range of antifibrotic potencies in a rat model, with tetrandrine being very effective and tubocurarine being ineffective. These drugs inhibited zymosan-stimulated oxygen consumption with a potency sequence of tetrandrine (IT) = fangchinoline (FA) > berbamine (BE) ., cepharanthine (CE) "" cycleanine (CY} ~ tubocurarine (TU). This inhibition of respiratory burst activity could not be attributed to a drug-induced decline in the ATP content of these pneumocytes. Drug binding to alveolar macrophages was directly dependent on temperature and drug concentration. The sequence for binding capacity was FA > TT = BE = CY > CE ~ TU. Therefore, there was no simple relationship between binding capacity and inhibitory potency. Binding capacity was not related to lipophilicity of these alkaloids. In addition, tetrandrine failed to bind to metabolically dead cells or sonicated macrophage preparations. These data suggest that the interaction of BBIQ alkaloids with phagocytes is not simply nonspecific binding to membrane lipids. Alteration of the cytoskeletal system with vinblastine, taxol, or cytochalasin B decreased tetrandrine binding by approximately 33% when adtkd separately and by 93% when added jointly. Pre-exposure of alveolar macrophages to stimulants increased the ability of BBIQ alkaloids to inhibit both oxygen consumption and superoxide release. These data suggest that the mechanism by which BBIQ alkaloids inhibit activation of phagocytes involves microtubules and bules and microfilaments. Pre-exposure of macrophages to stimulants would change the conformation of cytoskeletal components and may make these structures more susceptible to drug interaction.

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

"The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. Post flocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pct. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s). INTRODUCTIONBecause of the increasing interest in selective flocculation as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the flocculation behavior of several cross-linked starch derivatives containing chelating groups. This report dis cusses the flocculation of sulfide mineral fines by insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX).Polymeric materials such as ISX, which contain a chelating group of known re¬activity towards specific mineral surfaces, were first proposed by Slater, Clark, and Kitchener (1), 3 Kitchener (2), and Attia and Kitchener (3) as selective flocculants for mineral fines with particle aggregation possible through a bridging mechanism. The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

Both immediate and long-range economic factors are associated with blending anthrafines to produce metallurgical cokes, and they warrant careful consideration of the technology of carbonization of blends containing significant proportions of inert substances in general and anthrafines in particular. This situation has resulted in numerous publications dealing with various phases of the overall problem, particular emphasis being placed on the effects of inert substances on the yields and quality of cokes produced. Because relatively little attention has been given to the expansion behavior of coal blends containing inert substances, an investigation of this problem was undertaken using the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Since experiments in the sole-heated oven do not measure wall pressures directly, a new method of interpretation of sole-heated oven data, which permits estimates of wall pressures, has been proposed.

Missouri's iron production came from three types of ore: (l) Brown ores, including the deposits of primary and secondary limonites in southeast and southwest Missouri, (2) hematites of the filled sinks, including the ores of Central Ozark district, and (3) specular ores in porphyry, including the deposits of the St. Francois Mountains.
