"Railroad locomotives produce heat, gas, and smoke, which cause considerable discomfort to engine men and firemen while passing through tunnels. In order to try and improve these conditions, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the composition of atmospheres in cabs of freight locomotives while in tunnels; and some of the higher temperatures in the cabs were noted; physiological effects upon men were determined and gas masks and respirators were devised to eliminate the effects of irritating and poisonous gases and smoke. Those investigations were conducted in tunnels of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific railroads; while that described in this paper was carried out in tunnels of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Railroad, situated in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia, Freight locomotives used by this railroad are of the Mallet type, which have two separate cylinders: and two separate sets of driving wheels on each side. In locomotive language they are of the 2-6-6-2 type. All of the cylinders act as simple engines when starting or in slow, heavy hauling; but at faster speeds the pair of cylinders on each side operate compound, Mallet locomotives are the largest and most powerful now operated.The tendency in train operation has always been to increase the burden upon locomotives, Present traffic needs frequently load even the Mallet engine to capacity, and yet the weight of trains tends to increase. It has been suggested as a means of securing greater power units that Mallets be constructed to operate only as simple engines. This would increase the amount of steam given off as the amount of coal burned and the resulting volume of flue gas emitted."

Several studies have suggested that pulmonary toxicity to asbestos and silica may be mediated through oxidant-induced cell injury. We have reported recently that surface radicals associated with freshly fractured silica may be an imponant factor in cell injury and induction of pulmonary disease. Although the generation of oxygenated radicals in dust-cell interactions has been demonstrated, there are no data correlating the toxicity of a dust with the level of oxygen radical generation by the dust during its interaction with phagocytic cells. In the present study, we have investigated the in vitro generation of oxygen free radicals from human neutrophils and rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with freshly fractured silica, aged silica, amosite, crocidolite, chrysotilc, and a nontoxic dust, barite. Electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of a spin trap phenyl-N-ten-butyl nitronc (PBN) was used to measure the oxygen radicals generated during phagocytosis of the dusts. The relative toxicity index and ESR peak heights, on an equal surface area basis and normalized to barite as one, showed a direct relationship. The normalized toxicity indices and peak heights were: silica, 3.5 versus 2; chrysotile, 4 versus 2; crocidolite, 11 versus 8; and amosite, 26 versus 13. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers such as catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,3 dimethyl-2-thiourea (DMTU), sodium benzoate, and mannitol prevented the radical generation. Carmustine, a glutathione reductase- glutathione peroxidase inhibitor, caused a 5-fold increase in the radical generation. These results indicate that a nontoxic dust such as barite generates toxic oxygen radicals at a minimal level that can be quenched by the normal cellular defense system. For toxic dusts such as silica, amositc, chrysotile, and crocidolite, the potential for oxygen radical generation is enhanced by their surface propenies, physical dimensions, and the surface-based radical-generating redox sites. The enhanced radical generation may impair the cellular defense system, resulting in cell injury. Use of scavengers, chelators, and potentiating agents suggests the membrane-based oxidase system as the probable primary source of the radical-generating system. The data presented herein suggest the generation of oxygen free radicals as an important primary event in silica- as well as asbestos-induced cell injury.

The association is a national organization and operates through local, sectional, or State chapters in mining, petroleum, and allied industries. The National Council of the Holmes Safety Association consists of representatives of State councils and local chapters, with the Director of the Bureau of Mines as president.

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

"The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and· approved February 25, 1913, made it the province, and duty of the Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate· information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue of the Bureau of Mines List of Publications and Articles describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1990, to December 31,1991. This seven-chapter document is the first volume of a two-volume report that presents a comprehensive outline of coal-mine electrical power systems from theory to practice. Together, the two volumes contain the vital aspects that go into planning and designing a mine power system. After a short introductory chapter, Chapter 2 discusses the history of electrical use in mining and introduces "typical" mine- power-system arrangements. Chapter 3, 4, and 5 supply basic information on electrical theory, circuit analysis, and motors. Next, the Grounding and Distribution Chapters detail unique aspects of mine power systems. Elements of surface and underground use are included in all these chapters. An index concludes Volume I and is cross-referenced to both report volumes.

Although the Bureau of Mines has thus far made no large-scale experiments with oil shales, and the feasibility of the commercial manufacture of shale-oil products suited to present market requirements has not been demonstrated, there is ample reason to believe that these products will eventually supplement the more commonly used petroleum products and give equally good service. In 1919 the bureau, in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgical Research, University of Utah, began investigating the oil shales of the United States to obtain detailed information on their value. The States of Colorado and Indiana also cooperated through their State universities, in which research laboratories were organized to assist in carrying on the oil-shale studies planned and directed by the bureau. As a result of these studies much information is now available concerning laboratory methods of producing the greatest yields of the best products from oil shale. In order to study the principles that govern the retorting of oil shales and to test the oils produced, it has been necessary to develop and standardize reliable apparatus and methods for distilling shale, and to adapt to the testing of shale oils some of the methods the Bureau of Mines uses for testing petroleum. The methods employed by the Scottish shale-oil manufacturers were also studied, but most of them have been superseded by those described in this bulletin, which give more comprehensive and accurate results and employ more convenient apparatus. This paper is presented, therefore, as a manual of apparatus and methods that the bureau has developed for work on oil shale and found satisfactory for routine tests and for research. Explanation and discussion of the principles underlying the methods of testing are included wherever necessary for a clearer understanding.

Exxon Minerals Company, a division of Exxon Corporation, has been exploring for base metal deposits in the Precambrian volcanic rocks in northern Wisconsin since 1970. Aerial electromagnetic surveys of the area, conducted in 1974, reported an anomaly, near Crandon, in Forest County. In the summer of 1975, the first diamond drill entered the anomaly, representing the 25th prospect Exxon had drilled in Wisconsin. This first hole revealed significant mineralization containing zinc and copper. Subsequent drilling confirmed the discovery of a sizeable zinc-copper massive sulfide are body. 1.1.2 Location The deposit is located in northeastern Wisconsin within a topographical high called the Northern Highlands region. The deposit lies about 5 miles directly south of Crandon and about 2 miles east of State Highway 55 on Sand Lake Road (see fig. 1). Other local communities include Rhinelander 28 miles west, Antigo 45 miles south, and Iron River and Iron Mountain, in Michigan, 75 and 44 miles east and north of Crandon respectively. In relation to the lakes and streams, the deposit lies 0.25 miles north of Little Sand Lake, and about 1 mile south of Swamp Creek.

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center (now Safety Research Center) during fiscal year 1968 (July 1, 1967, to June 30, 1968) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. "INTRODUCTION As a part of the investigation of domestic manganese deposits, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples of ore from three from three properties in the general vicinity of Tracy, Calif.The Buckeye mine is 23 miles of Tracy, just inside the northeast boundary of Stanislaus County. The mine is owned by K.O. Winship estate of San Francisco and is leased by Verner Allen, also of San Francisco.The ore is principally manganese carbonate occurring in interbedded layers in white chert, with the original,carbonate mineral altered in place. Four samples, representing four types of ore, were submitted, as follows: A, black oxide; B, pink carbonate; C, gray carbonate.The Wilfred Murphy property (also known as the Murmac claims) is approximately 30 airline miles south of Tracy. The property can be reached by road from either Livermore or Patterson and is on the divide separating Santa Clara and Stanislaua Counties Calif. The ore occurs in lenses along a white-chert formation. A 2-ton sample of ore for testing was taken from a dump accumulated from assessment and development work. The Ladd mine, 13 miles from Tracy in San Joaquin County is owned by Pat J. Connolly of Tracy and is leased by Mack C. Lake of San Francisco. The ore is essentially a chert impregnated with manganese oxides and the association is therefore exceedingly intimate and complex. Samples from each of the three adit levels of the mine were submitted for ore-dressing study.As the samples differed widely in physical character and response to ore-dressing methods of treatment, beneficiation of ores from each property was considered as a separate problem. Hence results of the investigations will be prescribed in separate sections of this report."

"The control of respirable dust in mines has been given paramount importance due to the health and safety implications associated with fine dust. The understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust has been recognized as essential for increasing the efficiencies of the existing control techniques and for developing new control strategies. Mining-related studies in this area are, in general, limited. They are also mostly experimental. Some mathematical and computer analyses have been attempted. In this paper, first a review of the mathematical studies performed in the last three decades in this area is presented. Second, a mathematical model for analyzing dust flow in mines is proposed. The model takes into account a number of factors affecting dust transport. It incorporates varying dust generation source strengths and dispersion, deposition, and coagulation of dust in mine airways. Finally, application areas for the model are discussed. A computer program based on the mathematical model has been developed. The program will output the dust concentration in the mine atmosphere as a function of time and distance from the source. The amount of dust deposited on the sides, roof, and floor of the airway is also determined.IntroductionAn airborne dust cloud is a complex system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. The behavior of the particles is dependent on a number of complex physical mechanisms, often opposing in nature. The net interaction results in the ambient concentration. This size dependent behavior of particles contrasts with that of gases, an area quite widely studied.The term aerosol is used to describe clouds of microscopic and submicroscopic particles in air such as chemical smoke or particulate matter released from smoke stacks. An aerosol system can be regarded as an arbitrary element of volume filled with gas and suspended particles of possible highly variable physiochemical nature. The parameters that are used to describe an aerosol system include concentration, mass average velocity and particle mass and radius. In characterizing such systems, several assumptions are made. Among these is the assumption that particles are smooth, inert and rigid spheres. Again, for example, when the particles are in transport, the possibility of collision exists. As a result of the collision, the particles may coalesce to form larger particles. The probability of sticking is considered a known quantity (lady, 1970). In this paper, the application of the principles used in aerosol systems is explored for the study of the transport and deposition of fine coal dust in underground mines."

As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantities, a series of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of J. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for example, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New River (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a full account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included.

This volume, the first of a six volume final report, provides an executive summary of the research and results carried out under a grant from the U. S. Bureau of Mines on underground coal mine ventilation. Under the project, a mine ventilation simulator was developed. Sensitivity of leakage and friction factors on the total quantity and pressure requirements was studied. The simulator was applied to a new mine under development, and to an operating mine, to demonstrate the usefulness of the simulator in ventilation planning and in evaluating proposed changes to existing ventilation system. This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Butler County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 2 million tons of coal was produced in Butler County in 1958, of which about 25 percent was cleaned mechanically in four cleaning plants. Updating the 1942 coal-reserve estimates made by Ashley to December 31, 1958, more than 1,266 million tons of recoverable coal reserves remain in the county in beds that arc 24 inches or more thick. The Upper and Lower Freeport, Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds were selected on the basis of production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were chosen after a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Four samples each were collected from the Upper Freeport and Middle Kittanning beds, three samples from the Brookville bed, two, samples from the Upper Kittanning bed, and one sample each from the Lower Freeport, Lower Kittanning, and Clarion beds.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

This report, 27th in a continuing series1, describes Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations during 1962. While the brief discussion in each section of the report presents only the highlights of Bureau work during the year, details of many investigations can be found in publications cited in this text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications. Recent trends in coal research and technology both at home and abroad were reviewed in several publications2. Bureau research, as in the past3, continued to stress improved methods of mining, preparing, processing, and using coal. The program included a wide variety of applied and basic studies for developing information useful to the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting wise conservation and utilization of our coal resources.

The Bureau of Mines compiled information for the nonspecialist about natural gas liquids recovery from hydrocarbon streams in natural gas processing plants. Attention is directed to the impact of the technology of processing and the quality of gas processed in view of the increased availability of natural gas for processing. Significant changes in product and market trends within the natural gas processing industry are highlighted. Fixed capital-plant costs for grassroots, refrigerated-oil absorption and conventional adsorption schemes, adapted from published studies, are presented giving ranges of cost estimates for medium-sized plants. Marketed products of the natural gas processing industry are briefly discussed in relation to automotive air pollution problems and approaches to their control.

The objective of this contract as to prepare a detailed, readily usable handbook on dust control techniques for longwall mining operations. Information was gathered from available literature, and through contacts with industry and government personnel. The handbook describes those methods of dust control applicable to today's longwall mining systems, and contains sufficient design elements to assist operators with problems in testing or implementing new control procedures. Complete reference lists are presented at the end of each chapter to direct the reader to additional information.

This report establishes a methodology for the evaluation of gas detection devices and is the result of a critical investigation into the basic principles defining gas detector performance. A scheme is presented to evaluate the performance of a test sample of gas detectors based on the detector type and intended application. Test procedures, worksheets, test apparatus, glossary and statistical methods for handling test data arc given. In addition, evaluation standards and test parameters are identified. It is intended that this report serve as a comprehensive framework for the eventual certification of all gas detectors for mine applications. A plan is proposed and recommended for the quantification and implementation of evaluation standards for gas detection device certification.
