The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

A survey of endomycorrhizal fungi occurring on orphan coalmine lands in Western and Eastern Kentucky revealed a great diversity of species present. Thus a large number of fungi are available for isolation and evalution for enhancing revegetation of mined land. Endomycorrhizal fungi isolated from orphan mines stimulated growth of sweetgum seedlings on mine soil at low fertilisation but inhibited growth at high fertilization; this growth inhibition at high fertilization did not occur with plants growing on peat-perlite. Banding of endomycorrbizal inoculum was not advantageous, compared with incorporation of inoculum throughout the growth medium, for production of mycorrhizal sweetgum seedlings. Newly reclaimed mine spoils were nearly nonmycorrhizal, compared with land reclaimed four or eight years earlier. A procedure for isolation of single-spore cultures of endomycorrhizal fungi was developed; this procedure is necessary for studies of ecotypic variability. A practical procedure using container-grown Pisolithus tinctorius-infected shortleaf pine seedlings for production of large numbers of bareroot pine seedlings infected with P. tinctorius for mined land reclamation was demonstrated.

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures to measure Bingham flow properties for mine tailings and to use these to predict the possible consequences of a hypothetical tailings flow failure at the Tenmile Tailings Pond at Climax, Colorado. The consequences of such a failure were found to be minimal, and the failure itself highly; unlikely. Values of Ty (Bingham yield shear strength) and np (plastic viscosity) were measured for 10 materials using results obtained from vaned coaxial viscometer tests and triaxial tests.

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

This profile study of the commercial secondary aluminum industry examines not only the elements that form the industry but also the technological contributions of each toward industrial growth. Concise descriptions of processing methods trace aluminum scrap from generating sources to marketable industrial and consumer goods. Economic and marketing appraisals are used to illustrate the impact that recent technology has had upon the secondary aluminum industry. Price, supply, demand, competition, and substitutes are selected as components of an economic model of the secondary industry and are used to illustrate the aggregate effects of technological changes. The final section is a conceptual look at the future in which sensitive economic indicators (such as die casting in the automotive and appliance industries) are examined as well as the problems of conserving mineral resources by retrieving secondary aluminum from solid waste.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of southern Louisiana and southern Texas is the seventh in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United States. Preceding reports* may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples and making laboratory tests have been discussed in the first three papers. A method of summarizing and interpreting the laboratory data has also been given, but most of the crudes included in the present report differ so radically from those previously reported, that it has been found advantageous to adopt a somewhat different method in making summaries. This method is described in detail later. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped that these will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, for correction before the appearance of the final bulletin.

Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is in-tended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

Active placer mining in Alaska began near Juneau in 1880, but the first gold rush did not start until 1896; then the discovery of the Klondike brought gold seekers from all parts of the world. A few of the newcomers were experienced miners, but the majority knew nothing whatever of placer mining. Even those who were placer miners of much experience found entirely new conditions, notably frozen ground, that presented many difficult problems. As a result, numerous methods of mining and of thawing frozen ground were tried. From these trials the practice described in this bulletin has been developed. All known placer fields in Alaska have been mined to some extent, and some have been virtually exhausted. In most districts, however, there remain large quantities of low-grade gravel and also some small isolated areas of comparatively rich gravels which could not be successfully mined because of adverse physical conditions. These districts are now the scene of most placer mining, including dredging, hydraulicking, drifting, mechanical methods of open-cut mining, and ground sluicing (or booming) followed by " shoveling-in."

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 8,500 acres of the 20,250-acre Seven Blackfoot Wilderness Study Area (WSA) consisting of all 3,950 acres of MT-024-657A and 4,550 acres of the 4,850 acre MT-024-657B in order to evaluate the mineral resources. Within this report these 8,500 acres are referred to as the study area. Located about 30 miles northwest of Jordan, MT, the study area is underlain by outcrops of Quaternary alluvium and Cretaceous to Paleocene sandstones, shales, clays, and coal. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Except for some current interest in petroleum and natural gas, there has been no mineral exploration activity in the study area. The study area contains subeconomic clay, placer gold, and coal. Land within the study area is leased or under lease application for oil and gas.

Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. A mining company for a period of 12 years bad been selling its ore to a certain smelting company for the purpose of obtaining a continuous and steady market for its ore and for the purpose on the part of the smelting company of obtaining a continuous and steady supply of ore for smelting; an agreement was entered into by which the mining company agreed to eell and the smelting company agreed to purcshase at ruling prices all the ore produced by the mining company of certain' stated grades, and to this end the mining company agreed to actively operate its mines. It is no longer the rule that a suit will not lie for the specific performance of a contract relating to personal property ; but the question for determination in such a case is whether the complainant has a plain, speedy and adequate and complete remedy at law, and if he has no such remedy, specific performance will be granted. In an action by a smelting company for the specific performance of a contract of sale it appeared that the ore produced by the mining company bad a peculiar value for smelt. i.ng purposes and was not readily obtainable elsewhere, and it would be practically impossible to measure the value for determining the loss the complainant would sustain· if the smelting company were not ,able ,to obtain the ore under the contract. It is comparatively simple for a court of equity to enforce the agreement as it pertains to the normal product of the mine and there is no plausible reason why a court may not require a performance on the part of the mining company where the mining company obligated it:Belf to operate all its mines. There is no delicate or complex condition involved in the production or delivery of the ore 'or in obtaining_ the stipulated prices agreed upon, and there is nothing apparent that will necessitate supervisory· control in requiring performance on the part of the mining company. A decree for specific perfoi:m,ance would require no supervision by the court either for the operation of the mines or for ascertaining and fixing the prices the mining company is to receive for its ore.

Water sprays and water powered scrubbers have both been utilized in the mining and milling industry to suppress airborne dust. Unconfined water sprays operated at lower water pressures of ?689 kPa (?100 psig) can be very effective at wetting the mine product at the dust source and significantly reducing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. However, unconfined waters sprays can be somewhat ineffective in actually removing airborne dust from the air. On the other hand, water powered scrubbers operating at higher water pressures of ?1,724 kPa (?250 psig) in physical enclosures or ducts have previously been demonstrated to be very effective in removing airborne dust from the air. These higher operating water pressures are uncommon in many mines and mills, so their use is limited. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently investigated the performance of a lower-pressure, water powered inline series spray scrubber for removing localized airborne dust emitted at the source. Results showed noticeable improvements in airborne dust capture efficiency through the operation o f multiple inline series hollow cone spray nozzles within a round duct or pipe at the same water pressure as a single spray. Operating hollow cone spray(s) at higher water pressures noticeably improved airflow through the scrubber and yielded some additional scrubber efficiency improvements. Thus, in-line spray scrubber efficiency trade-offs were observed to be made by altering spray power components of water pressure and/or quantity (number of sprays). Results show that, on average, up to 0.23 and 0.32 m3/s (484 and 679 cu ft per min) of airflow at 0.81 and 0.69 dust capture efficiencies can be achieved with three 81° and 33°hollow cone inline series sprays, respectively, operating at 1,655 kPa (240 psig).

This report documents laboratory and in-mine analyses of diesel exhaust pollutants carried out to assess the fate of potentially reactive species in the mine environment. Specifically, the concentration of stable compounds including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and potentially reactive compounds including nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, aldehydes, formaldehyde, acrolein, formic acid, odorants, particulates, soluble sulfates, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. The concentration and mass emission rates of these compounds were measured in the laboratory under three engine speed and load conditions and with three exhaust control conditions, i.e., none, catalyst, water conditioner. Once calibrated, the engine was installed in the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Coal Mine and the concentration of exhaust pollutants measured at several distances downstream (inby) of the engine. Laboratory results confirm the relatively small effect of exhaust control devices on most pollutants under engine conditions of low speed and load. At higher engine speed and load, the catalyst is more effective in controlling many pollutants. The in-mine data indicates that during residence times, which are typical for miner/exhaust contact, most diesel exhaust pollutants do not decrease in concentration. The obvious exceptions are nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde. The concentration of these pollutants is reduced by up to 75 percent in five minutes. The lack of increase in levels of obvious reaction products indicates that surface loss may be a major sink for these pollutants.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Previous investigations, too numerous to be listed in entirety, have been performed to determine the physical properties of rock. When considered according to their objectives, most of these investigations can be grouped as follows: First, the geologic group (1,2),4/ in which the purpose was to obtain information on the physical properties of the rocks that make up the earth's crust. Particular emphasis has been placed on the determination of the elastic constants--that is, Young's modulus, the modules of rigidity, and Poisson's ratio – as these quantities determine the propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Second, the structural properties group (3 - 11), in which the physical properties of architectural or monumental stone, concrete and aggregate rock, road blocks (cobblestone), and the like were desired. The tests have been quite general and include, besides the elastic properties; the compressive and tensile strength, and the toughness, hardness, and weathering properties of many types of rocks.To .a lesser degree, investigations have been carried out to determine the physical properties of mine rock. A few reports (12 - 14) present data on the crushability and grindability of mine rock, and a large number of papers discuss grinding and crushing procedures and methods of analyzing the data (for example, see references 15 - 17). Some of the latter group also have given the results of tests on mine rock; however, comparatively few include an adequate petrographic description or information on other physical properties of the rock. A few papers,(18 - 22) have reported studies of the strength of rock specimens in respect to the strength of parts of mine structures, such as pillars, roof, arches, etc. Other papers (23 - 26) have discussed investigations on such subjects as primary and secondary crushing, diamond and pneumatic rock drilling, explosive breaking and shattering of rock, rate of drifting and miring, and other allied problems. The majority of these reports have given no more than a cursory, description of the rocks and have included no statement regarding the physical properties. When statements have been given regarding the physical properties, they have usually referred only to isolated tests, making correlations between variations in the physical properties and variations in the .test under consideration difficult, if not impossible. Some reports have included handbook values on such characteristics as the crushing strength, hardness, and toughness. This practice is not satisfactory, because these values are usually given for col¬lective types of rocks, such as granites, limestones, and marbles, and it is known that the variations of the physical properties within these groups is often larger than the differences between the groups."
