The Sydvaranger magnetite mine was shut down in 1996 due to low iron ore prices. It was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The Sydvaranger magnetite is free of harmful elements and should therefore be sold on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2 % SiO2. In the old plant, this grade was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred as collector because it could be used in process water from the sea. The use of amine has been restricted by the Norwegian pollution authorities during the time the mine was shut down. Test work to replace cationic with anionic flotation is therefore done. Research on activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by basic research in the period from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under simplified laboratory conditions. This old research has now been followed up from a practical/empirical point of view. The basic work was mainly done on quartz and iron minerals only. In this case, an actual feed containing a number of minerals common in iron ores is used, in order to demonstrate that a commercial process is possible. Calcium activation is shown to work excellently but requires too high pH to be environmentally and economically attractive. Magnesium activation is a more difficult process, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+, which was shown to be the activator, is about 100 times lower than the alternative CaOH+. Flotation success depends partly upon the ore, some amphibole minerals are more difficult to float than pure quartz. Ordinary batch flotation test work is time consuming. A South African microflotation test cell has shown promise, because work can be focused upon flotation of the more critical coarser fractions of the Sydvaranger ore. Modification of hydrophobic part of carboxylic collector molecule is an upcoming trend for producing new reagents and changing its flotation properties such as activity, selectivity, sensitivity to hardness salts that inevitably present in the pulp liquid phase in the processing of ores containing calcium minerals. A wide range of apatite collectors ? monoalkyl ethers and monoalkylamides of dicarboxylic acids ? succinic, o-phthalic and maleinic acids have been synthesized by the addition of aliphatic alcohols and amines with various hydrocarbon radical value (from ?11 to ?16) to anhydride of the corresponding acid. Using computer modeling based on ChemBio 3D program of specialized complex Chem?ffice the calculation was carried out of charge distribution on atoms, energy parameters of molecules for investigated compounds. Calculated values of absolute hardness (?=6.75 ? 12.36) and absolute electronegativity (?= 5.67 ? 8.90) of the reagents showed that monoderivatives of dicarboxylic acids refer to the ?hard? type of bases. The degree of a charge transfer during calcium compounds formation of considered collecting agents (?N=0.009 ? 0.143) has been computed. Dissociations, micelle formation in solutions of these reagents and its hydrophobic and collecting properties were investigated in respect to apatite. Dependence of bulk, surface and collector properties on collector molecule architecture (double bond or benzene ring and non-ionogenic functional group in the structure of hydrocarbon radical) has been established. It is shown that experimentally determined dissociation constants (??a=5.16 ? 5.60 for succinic acid derivatives and ??a=3.32-3.78 for maleinic and o-phthalic acid derivatives) perfectly correspond to acidic properties predicted by computer calculations. Compounds of monoalkylderivative dicarboxilic acid have been determined optimum in composition and structure. The results of apatite flotation from apatite-nepheline ores of the Khibiny deposit (the Kola Peninsula) are presented here and show benefits of selected reagents. "In froth flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is critical for a successful flotation process. In present work, an atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) on copper sulfides, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite. The in-situ collected AFM images show that PAX adsorbs on chalcopyrite mainly in the form of oily dixanthogen; while it strongly adsorbs on chalcocite and bornite in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface. The information obtained from the AFM study shed lights on the collectivity and therefore the selection of specific collector for different copper sulfide minerals in industrial practice.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation, which treats the highest throughput in mining industry and produces the maximum economic outcome of any surface chemistry process, has been widely applied for the concentration of copper sulfide minerals, i.e., chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite. In flotation, collectors are added into the pulp (mixture of water and fine-grained minerals) to selectively adsorb onto the target mineral and render its surface with high hydrophobicity, which is generally beneficial for a strong mineral-bubble attachment and thus a high flotation recovery. Therefore, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process and it has been studied by applying various surface analysis techniques, such as IR (Infrared Spectroscopy), CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). (Poling, 1963; Allison et al., 1972; Mielczarski et al., 1984; Leppinen et al., 1989; Kartio et al., 1996) These studies have revealed a lot of information, such as the reaction, product and mechanism, of the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface. It is also of great interest to directly get the image of adsorbed collectors on mineral surface changing with pulp chemistry, such as pH, redox potential, ionic strength and chemical’s dosage."

"The pressures on mining and minerals education at the tertiary level are well known. Within Australia, for example, the number of undergraduate mining engineering courses with 30 or more students in each year has reduced to three (University of Queensland, University of New South Wales and Curtin University). Similar declines in both student numbers and participating institutions are evident in many other parts of the world, and notably in USA and most countries in Europe.An in depth study of the Australian sector was conducted in 1997/1998, resulting in the Back from the Brink report (Carter 1998). The Australian situation was summarised as follows.Australia’s minerals education system, in its current form, is fragile and is in no position to seize the opportunity (i.e. world leadership in minerals education) and is more likely to succumb to the threat.Current trends include:- an acute shortage of talented academic staff, as a result of University remuneration packages having become hopelessly uncompetitive with those in the minerals industry;- small student populations and high relative costs, making mineral specific courses vulnerable to closures, when Universities are under extreme cost pressures; this situation will be exacerbated if enrolments drop in response to, say, a cyclical down turn in the industry; and- under-resourcing of minerals departments because of their comparatively small size, making these departments incapable of delivering top class teaching in all aspects of their courses, despite being excellent in some areas.Most of the Australian issues identified above have direct parallels in other countries.The most common response of institutions to the threats is to seek strength, and in some cases survival, through various forms of linkages and networks. A number of these associations, which are frequently defensive in nature, are outlined in the paper."

"Silver is currently lost as jarosite during the pressure oxidation of sulphides and cyanidation of the residues yields 5-10% of silver. Efforts to recover silver from complex sulphides, which contain economic fractions of silver require an understanding of the behaviour of acanthite during pressure oxidation. However, previous studies of acanthite (Ag2S) reaction have been complicated by the formation of argento-jarosite and uncertainties arise on the interpretation of the results.In this work, the acid pressure oxidation of high-grade natural silver sulphide mineral (acanthite) was carried out at 110-150°C and under the conditions similar to that of pressure oxidation of complex sulphide. The predominant product of reaction is elemental sulphur. The rate of reaction increases with increasing temperature and with the presence of ferric ions. The kinetics is controlled by chemical reaction with activation energy of 72.6 kJ/mol. The rate of reaction decreases with the presence of silver sulphate in the initial slurry. "The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

"Thiol collectors including the xanthates and dithiophosphates have dominated the sulfide mineral processing industry for over a century. Tecflote represents completely different chemistry, without sulfur or phosphorus, and will float all sulfides and associated precious metals. As these collectors are surfactant in nature, they comprise a head group which binds to mineral surfaces, a spacer and a long hydrophobic tail. The modification of the spacer behind the head group allows for collector optimisation for different sulfide ore types and process conditions.The Tecflote surfactants have been designed to be either very selective against pyrite at the natural pH of the ore (pH 7-9) or to float all sulfides including pyrite. Depending on the ore type and the process flow sheet, the use of lime can be maintained, reduced or completely eliminated.Tecflote can be used either as a rougher collector giving good recovery and grade for the sulfide minerals or it can be used to target valuable minerals after regrind and through cleaner flotation. It has repeatedly shown to be very effective at holding onto gold through the cleaner steps. The low solubility has a significant impact on the mechanism and surface activity of the collector, resulting in a very different flotation response compared to conventional thiol collectors.INTRODUCTIONXanthate was first made in 1882 by Zeise and first used in flotation in 1924 (Keller, 2018). In 1946 Keller patented thionocarbamate as a collector, which was produced by Dow Chemicals (Keller, 2018). Later it was replaced by Dow product Z-200, while dialkylthionocarbamate was discovered by Harris et al. (Harris, 1954. No significant chemistry change to collectors has occurred since they were introduced in the mid-20th century and now that the feed grades have been declining over the last decades creating a need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores and pushing the industry to look at other reagents."

The behavior in electric field of fine particles present in aqueous solution was measured in order to apply to the classification of fine particles. The sample particles used are spherical polystyrene particles with the average diameter of 0.03 µm, 0.1 µm, 1.0 µm, 4.3 µm and 9.6 µm. Electrophoretic mobility and zeta potential of various particles are measured by an instrument based on the principle of the laser Doppler effect. The influence of temperature, electrolyte concentration on the electro-phoretic mobility was investigated for various polystyrene particles. The electrophoretic mobility increases with increasing pH and temperature of suspensions. The measured electrophoretic mobilities are different from electrolyte concentration and particle size. The electrophoretic retardation effect and relaxation effect are considered to explain the behavior of fine particles in electric field by applying the electro kinetic theory of Wiersema et al. For all particle size, the electrophoretic mobility decreases rapidly in high concentration of KNO3 such as 0.1 mol/dm3due to the compression of electric double layer The forces acting the particles in electric field are considered to be electrical force, friction force and some other forces like relaxation effect and electrophoretic retardation effect which appear in ionic behavior. It is considered that the particle moving velocity depends on the particle size. When the particle size is less than 1µm, the velocity increases with increasing the particle size. On the oth-er hand, the velocity deceases with increasing in particle size, when the particle size is larger than 1µm. This phenomenon is considered to be interesting from the viewpoint of classification for fine particles. We found that the electrophoretic mobility of 1.0µm particles is larger than that of 0.1µm particles, and that it is possible to classify fine particles by using the difference of electrophoretic mobility by many experimental results. The phenomena can be explained by the forces acting the fine particles in the electric field. We can apply the behavior to classification of fine particles.

The copper extraction yield from thermophilic bioleaching of chalcopyrite depends on temperature, pH, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), as well as the activity of the microbe used. We studied copper extraction yields obtained from chalcopyrite with three thermophiles, Acidianus brierleyi, Sulfolobus metallicus, and Metallosphaera sedula, under various pH and temperature conditions and with different initial amounts of ferric iron. The results indicated that the capacity of each thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+ differed, which affected the influence of pH, temperature, ORP, and microbial activity level on the yield of copper. Microbial activity can cause ORP to be close to the critical value (450 mV) at which copper extraction at 65 °C can be higher than that at 80°C. An initial pH of 1.5 retards the precipitation of jarosite, allowing temperatures as high as 80°C to result in copper extraction yields close to 100%. However, if a thermophile with a poor capacity to form Fe3+ is employed, 100% copper extractions can also be obtained at pH 2.5, because ORP is low as result of low amounts of Fe3+ in solution. Optimum temperatures for the growth of thermophiles did not always mean high copper extraction yields. Conversely, high biomass concentrations depending on the capacity of the thermophile strain to leach iron as Fe3+, can result in excess Fe3+ in solution, leading to the precipitation of large amounts of Fe3+ as jarosite. The bioleaching capacity of A. brierleyi was reduced or suppressed when insufficient initial Fe3+ was pro-vided to trigger the leaching reaction, whereas S. metallicus and M. sedula were less sensitive to the initial availability of Fe3+. This result confirmed that a direct enzymatic attack on the mineral surface could initiate the leaching reaction, but later ORP governed the leaching rate of chalcopyrite.

"This research represents a shift away from empirical models that lock the industry into 50-year old inefficiencies with little response to operating variability. The mechanistic and intrinsically dynamic mill model under development steps up to a new paradigm using the latest computing capabilities and physical understanding of breakage and transport to transform predictive capabilities for design, optimisation and on-line control with variable feed. The milling process is broken down into discrete sub-processes, each of which can be modelled as an object in the whole model and in the model code. These objects can be upgraded or exchanged without having to rewrite or restructure the remainder of the code. Sub-processes include: feed into mill; transport along mill; presentation to impacting events; range of impacting forces; probability of being impacted in different zones in the mill as a function of particle size and density; suspension in slurry; and discharge out of the mill. The unit and processes surrounding the mill (feed and recycle conveyors, slurry pump and pipe, cyclone and recycle crusher) have also been modelled, in order to incorporate the effect of recirculating load coming from a cyclone or a recycle pebble crusher, respectively for ball mills or SAG mills. Each unit is modelled dynamically and PID controllers have been added to control pumping flowrate from sump and water addition for cyclone feed dilution. The paper demonstrates the predictive capability of a dynamic, mechanistic model and is used to test the sensitivity to the sub-processes, comparing different formulations and highlighting the aspects that require further development. Validation on pilot tests and application to industrial data is presented. This approach is currently undergoing industrial trial on sites, for use in on-line model-informed process control. Considerable further development is required to incorporate the full mechanistic structure planned for this model."

This paper covers the iron ore industry in India which cater to the need of iron ore requirement of Indian iron and steel sector as well as export commitment in addition to addressing the industry?s key concern to attain the same. The main contents are (i) resources and its exploitation; covering status of exploration, reserves and resources, province wise occurrences, distribution, nature of mineralization and generation of fines, etc ; (ii) use of iron ore in iron and steel making, covering physical and chemical requirements for pig iron and sponge iron production; (iii) ore characteristics and beneficiation practice in vogue; (iv) projected steel demand and requirement of quality iron ore and provision thereof; (v) recovery of iron values from in situ low-grade ores and stacked fine rejects (-10/-6 mm) inclusive of slimes (-0.15 mm) from tailing ponds; (vi) agglomeration of fine concentrates preferably by pelletization; (vii) measures to augment iron ore availability for future requirements.

The flotation of low-grade zinc oxide ore which from Guizhou has been researched by sulfuration- amine method. The experimental result indicated that when pH of pulp was 11, good flotation index can be achieved by using sodium silicate as dispersant, mixed amine as collector, and the do-sage of sulfur sodium was 6kg/t, and the recovery of zinc can be heightened by using copper sulfate as activator and Hydroxamicacid as collector. When the zinc feed grade was 4.84%, the zinc concentrates with grade of 39.23 % and recoveries of 75.17 % were obtained by adopting this technics.

"Sand is a naturally occurring granular material that is a result of the physical or chemical breakdown of rocks. Raw/natural sand contains various minerals, and it is this combination of minerals that brings the value to the construction aggregate industry. However, it is the quartz component of sand that is valued in its application as industrial silica in glass, high purity quartz, foundry sand, and oil and gas fracturing. Depending on the industry, the grade requirements can be the concentration of SiO2, particle size or shape, as well as contaminants such as the heavy refractory minerals, clays, fines, and alkali metals. With the ever declining mineral feed grade, processors continue to face challenges making the industry specific concentrate grade. As such, it becomes more important to tailor make the processing reagents to fit the mineral, processing conditions, and desired quality specification. This paper focuses on the application of novel collectors towards the beneficiation of sand for each of the major industrial silica applications. INTRODUCTIONQuartz is a mineral composed of a framework of silicon and oxygen atoms. It is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust. There are many species of quartz, which are defined by the particle size, shape, and color. Silica sand is one of those species, which is the byproduct of the physical or chemical breakdown of quartz containing rocks or crystals. Geologist define silica sand as a silica mineral with a particle size between 0.05 and 2 mm in diameter (Zdunczyk, 2001). Silica sand has significant value to society in recreation (beach sand and toy boxes), construction aggregate (concretes and asphalt), industry (iron & steel casting, fracturing proppants, and glass), as well as specialty products such as semiconductors or silicon wafers used in electronics.The aggregate business is the dominant consumer of silica sand products. Conversely, glass making, foundries (casting material), abrasives, and fracturing proppants are the dominant applications for industrial silica sand. Not much beneficiation is required for sand products going into the construction industry, other than sizing and scrubbing to remove clay. However, the industrial silica sand applications are dependent on particle size, shape, and degree of contaminants, which sets the market value (table 1). Therefore, as the more specialty products are produced, more sophisticated techniques and chemistry need to be applied to ensure the appropriate quality is met."

Copper-chromium mixed oxides are widely used as catalyst for organic chemicals industry, NOx and CO oxidation, solid propellant etc. In the present investigation, one such spent Cu-Cr catalyst has been tested for recovering copper and chromium values through hydrometallurgical route. The spent catalyst used in this study contains about 42% Cu and 36% Cr. Phase analysis through XRD indicates that major phases are copper chromium oxide (CuCrO2) and copper chromate (CuCr2O4) while minor phase is copper oxide (Cu64O). SEM images show that high energy ball milling changes surface morphology significantly ? more regular shaped grains in unmilled samples changed to fine agglomerates. Surface area also changes significantly due to milling. Preliminary leaching experiments with NH3 and H2SO4 media using unmilled samples indicate that both the media are suitable for selective extraction of copper. About 55% copper recovery is achieved in 2 h using 1.2 M NH3 + 0.2M (NH4)2SO4 solution at 100°C. Increasing NH3 concentration or temperature does not improve the recovery significantly. Under the above conditions chromium, dissolution is insignificant (max. 2.24%). XRD analysis of the residue indicates that copper chromate fraction (CuCr2O4), which is a spinel structure, remains mostly intact. In sulphuric acid media at ambient temperature, 47% copper recovery is achieved with 7.5% (v/v) H2SO4 and maximum of 57% with the increase in acid concentration to 20%. However, 67% recovery is achieved by increasing the leaching temperature to 150°C. High energy ball milled samples show improved leaching efficiency. Under the leaching conditions of 7% H2SO4 (v/v), 2% pulp density, 80°C an unmilled sample yields 47% Cu recovery whereas 3h and 5h milled samples yield 65% and 90% Cu recovery respectively in 2h leaching time. Influence of temperature is also more pronounced in milled sample leaching in comparison to unmilled sample. Water leaching of alkali (NaOH) roasted milled sample carried out at 750°C for 2 h with 100% NaOH (w/w) resulted in 80% Cr recovery as compared to 37% Cr recovery using unmilled sample under the same conditions. An investigation of the seeding mechanism using heterocoagulation and the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory of two pure minerals is the objective of this study. The seed was silica with modal diameters of 4.529 µm (fine particles) and 5.216 µm (coarse particles) and the test powder was hematite with a modal diameter of 0.883 µm. Parameters included variations in the concentration and particle size of silica. Both particles were first subjected to size determination and settling tests via Stoke’s Law. The silica-hematite system was then suspended in 0.001 M KNO3 electrolyte solutions where pH was adjusted. Afterward, the suspension was agitated and was allowed to settle at different time intervals while obtaining turbidity readings. Results through settling time and turbidity vs. pH graphs indicate that maximum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 2 to 5 while minimum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 6 to 7. At these pH levels the zeta potentials of silica and hematite are negative and positive, respectively. On the contrary, repulsive forces dominate the system from pH 8 to 11 due to the particles’ negative zeta potentials. Furthermore, the attachment of hematite to silica increases when the parameters become larger thereby increasing the effectivity of heterocoagulation at acidic to neutral pH levels.

A new short combined flow sheet including high intensity magnetic separation and flotation for a rare earth ore in Maoniuping deposit, China has been investigated. Massive conclusive results demonstrate, that it is critical to separate the ore by high intensity magnetic separation prior to flotation for tons of slimes and nonmagnetic gangue existing. The vital technological parameters affecting flotation have been studied in detail. Modified hydroxamic acid is an efficient collector for bastnasite flotation because of its high selectivity. Flotation results also indicate high temperature that play an unfavourable role on the recovery as well as the grade of bastnasite concentrate, when the rare earth ore is floated with modified hydroxamic acid and sodium silicate depressant. Bastnasite concentrates, averaging over 65 percent REO at an overall recovery of 82-84% is achieved by the new beneficiation technology. "Process mineralogy’ is a form of applied mineralogy which focuses on addressing problems associated with the processing of ores. ‘Mineralogy’ is the scientific study of minerals and ‘mineral processing’ is the production of concentrates from ores. ‘Process mineralogy,’ however can be defined as the practical study of minerals associated with the processing of ores, concentrates and smelter products for the development and optimisation of metallurgical flowsheets, including the waste and environmental management considerations. This hybrid discipline consists of teams that include geologists, mineralogists, samplers, mineral processors and often others, working together. The degree of cross-training, communication and trust dictates the potential capacity of the team and where an appropriate work dynamic is fostered, in which relationships flourish as much as does the ethic of technical excellence, it is possible to develop technical capabilities that surpass those of conventional teams. The world’s demand for metals is ever increasing and ore deposits available for extraction and processing are lower grade and more complex, often containing deleterious elements that require tailored treatment. Generally, in the past, the technical challenges only needed to be overcome and assessed economically to make an ore deposit viable; increasingly and in the future, a more sustainable approach including environmental and societal considerations is needed. Process mineralogical assessment is increasingly providing the critical information that stands between failure or collapse and survival or success of some mining operations. In this paper, selected case studies are used to demonstrate the valuable role of the process mineralogy tools being used to provide the platform for innovative technology development. Their common attributes are discussed and distilled, thus providing some insights and potential guidance for addressing some of the likely future challenges of the mining industry."

"Gold has been a material in high demand since the dawn of humanity. After hundreds of years of exploitation, the increasingly search for gold occurs in lower grade deposits with greater extraction difficulty. Therefore, for maximum efficiency, deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their associations is crucial, which is acquired through an accurate and rigorous routine of process mineralogy and batch extraction tests. The industrial gold process extraction occurs by gravity concentration, sulphides flotation and cyanidation. For gravity concentration, it is fundamental to establish the proportion of free or coarse gold grains and its association to heavy minerals; regarding flotation, the most relevant data are the proportion of gold associated to sulphides and their liberation by the surface area; for cyanidation, it is crucial to evaluate gold accessibility and the kinetics of leaching. Thus, the characterization of gold associations and liberation is vital to establish the plant design, to optimize operating plants and to reduce gold losses. Our aim is the characterization of gold occurrence in low-grade Brazilian deposits with complex mineralogical assemblages to support processing flowchart definition and to predict metallurgical recoveries. Flotation rate constant is an essential parameter in the flotation process. The fine coal sample utilized in this investigation is anthracite from the Shenhuo mine in eastern China. Fine coal flotation rate tests were conducted to compare the flotation rate constant at constant power input with that at gradually increasing power input. Results indicate that the flotation rate constant decreases with the flotation process and increases as the flotation energy is increased. In addition, the flotation rate constant is close to the maximum value. The increasing trend of the flotation rate constant gradually slows down as the flotation energy input increases.

"The history of mineral processing is indeed long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. While many new processes and devices have been developed, the most significant trend in recent times has been the ever increasing scale of operations. There is serious doubt this ongoing trend is enough to match the global trend of falling grades and rising energy demands needed for mineral processing. As well we see that globally, the social licence to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure. Indeed, some argue that mining as we know it is dying and in the future, mining will be much more environmentally secure, even to the extent of insisting upon “in place” recovery and only bringing to the surface the valued product. In this paper we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 - 20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing as we know it will change significantly. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has a long history well covered in a recent publication (Habashi, 2006) who points out “the ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result, all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals. Similarly, another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. Since the middle ages, striving for improved economics has driven a string of innovative developments in milling and separation.
