"The NewCrest Cadia operation boasts the largest SAG mill commissioned last June 1998. A request was made to shed some more light on possible SAG mill charge behaviour. Three different software were used to simulate SAG mill charge behaviour:Mishra/Rajamanis MillSoft DEM charge motion program, Radziszewskis agglomerated DEM charge motion program and Powell/Nuricks MillTraj outer trajectories program. The contexts simulated are: 20/30 % charge volume, 65/75/85 % critical speed using the Hi-Lo lifter configuration specified for the mill as well as a Hi-Lo 60 degre lifter face configuration. Further, lifter interval was also studied to determine the effect on power draft. Power predictions are compared with those obtained during the commissioning period.INTRODUCTIONThe NewCrest Cadia operation is located outside of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. With proven reserves of 190 million tonnes at a grade of 0.75 g/t Au, the mill was designed to process 17 Mtpa (2065 tph) of ore with an 86% copper and 73% gold recovery. The grinding circuit (Fig. 1, Table I) boasts the largest SAG mill (Fig. 2) and was commissioned last June 1998."

"Process modeling and equipment sizing procedures for SAG circuits has advanced significantly over the past two decades. However, no matter how exact the hardness tests, models and scale-up calculations, if the ore samples being used for design do not accurately represent the orebody then major design errors can be encountered. This paper will describe a hardness testing method for identiQing the power requirement profile of an orebody, to an extent that design errors due to poor sampling can be greatly reduced or avoided altogether. It will provide some insight into the magnitude of hardness variability that can be encountered in an orebody. Finally, the paper will preview how detailed hardness distribution data can be incorporated into mine block models, to optimize SAG circuit design for an orebody, both fi-om a capital investment and throughput point of view.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been known that many SAG/AG' circuits experience wide swings in throughput. These throughput variations are almost always of a magnitude not anticipated in the plant design; consequently, they are detrimental to the expected return on investment for the mining companies. It is clear that the throughput swings are mainly caused by changes in ore hardness. In 1993, in an attempt to address this problem, MinnovEX began investigating the possibility of using a small scale SAG test (2 kg charge) to predict SAG power requirements from drill core samples. The objectives of the small scale test were to enable mining companies to do many more SAG hardness tests than currently undertaken for a particular orebody. To make this possible, the SAG tests had to use a minimal amount of sample, be cost effective, and give acceptable accuracy in the prediction of SAG power. If this small scale SAG test proved accurate, then the high sampling frequency would yield results that approach the true hardness distribution of an orebody. This hardness distribution could then be used to derive the distribution and variability of specific energy required throughout the complete orebody. This specific energy (kWh/t) can be thought of as the power required to grind one tonne of ore per hour (kW/tph) to a specified size. Once the true distribution of power requirement throughout the whole orebody is understood, the grinding circuit design team can make an informed decision regarding the hardness value that is most appropriate for sizing the SAG equipment. Throughput losses due to hardness variation could be deliberately planned for or avoided altogether (a capital cost decision)."

Statistics Canada record s indicate that in recent years 70 to 80% of the entire Canadian coal production originated from Western Canadian mines, in which about 55 to 65% of the coals are bituminous. Until recently, less than 20% of the latter were extracted by underground methods , the remainder being surface-mined. However, it is estimated that within the foreseeable future up to 80 or 90% will have to be gained by underground techniques. Although Western Canadian coal resources are considerable, they are unfortunately locked in severely distorted, steeply pitching and faulted seams of variable thickness. Consequently, their economic extraction poses serious engineering problems. One possible solution to the problems is to apply hydromechanical methods to underground mining. This is a well-proven method shown to be economically viable under Western Canadian conditions. This paper endeavours to widen the scope of published data on hydraulic coal mining and is based on practical engineering and cost data gathered through contacts with West German designers and operators of hydraulic mines.

"The research question of the present work is the following: at which speed should a rotary sample divider operate in order to produce representative samples of iron ore concentrate? In order to solve this problem, the representativity of a rotary sample divider treating iron ore concentrate from Iron Ore Compagny (IOC) Carol Lake mine in Labrador City was studied in the laboratory of mineral processing of “CEGEP de Sept-Îles”. The rotary sample divider speeds tested are: 20, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100%. The results show differences in both weight and particles sizes distributions with respect to the various rotation speed used. 20% has shown to be the speed that generates an almost normally distributed samples for both weight and particle size. As the speed of the rotary sample divider increases, the polygon of frequency for weight distribution progressively becomes a two modal distribution curve. 40, 50 and 100% speeds generate normal samples distribution curves with respect to particles size only. 60 and 80% are the speed to be avoided since they generate multiple modal distribution curves for both weight and particles size.IntroductionIn the mining industry, samples representativity is part of the key elements for management decisions. In fact, “Sampling provides vital information to plant operators, clients and geologists to profitably run and operate iron ore mines and plants” (Kevin Thorne et al. 2007). At the laboratory scale, several types of techniques’ are currently used to perform sampling. This include: grapping, alternate spading, quartering, riffles divider and rotating divider etc.. Among all these instruments, rotary divider is the most commonly used. Nevertheless, the usage of a rotary divider is not a guaranty for samples representativity since the results have shown to be related to running speed of this instrument. For the present research work, the idea is to use iron ore concentrate to quantify the representativity of a rotary sample divider. In other words, the research idea is to determine the speed at which a rotary sample divider produces representative samples while treating iron ore concentrate from Carol Lake mine. The present report will give an overview of the methodology used and the principal results obtained."

The backfill system at Cleveland Potash?s Boulby Mine places waste filter cake underground in the form of a high concentration slurry in worked out areas of the mine reducing the mine?s environmental impact. The backfill system delivers slurry approximately 1100 m down the mine and up to 11 000 m horizontally underground. The Boulby backfill system is unique in that the placed backfill waste is not used for the usual purposes such as support, pillar extraction or reducing ventilation requirements. It was specifically implemented for environmental reasons. This influenced the design and resulted in some unique features of the system. A previous paper (Wilkins et al., 2004) described the design and commissioning of the backfill system. This paper describes the operational experience with the backfill system and backfill placement since commissioning in May 2003 and looks at lessons that can be applied in other backfill designs.

"Human factors (HFs) play an important role in the mining and mineral industry, affecting operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Despite the introduction of new technologies and automation in this sector, it is well known that a significantly large proportion of total human errors occur during the operation and maintenance phase. A comprehensive literature review of HFs across several industries is provided. From this review, the impact of HFs on operation and maintenance is summarized, with a focus on what the mining industry is currently doing and what opportunities exist for additional improvements. Future research directions and themes are also identified.RÉSUMÉ Les facteurs humains (FH) jouent un rôle important dans l’industrie des mines et des minéraux, en ce qu’ils affectent l’efficacité et la sécurité de l’exploitation et de l’entretien. Malgré l’apparition de nouvelles technologies et de l’automatisation dans ce secteur, il est bien connu qu’une grande partie des erreurs humaines (EH) se produisent durant une phase d’exploitation et d’entretien. Cet article propose une analyse documentaire approfondie des FH dans plusieurs secteurs. L’impact des FH sur l’exploitation et l’entretien est résumé à partir de cette analyse, une attention particulière étant accordée à l’évolution de l’industrie minière et aux possibilités d’améliorer davantage ses activités. Sont également identifiés les futurs thèmes et voies de recherche.INTRODUCTIONDuring the past several decades, the mining industry has focused on improving equipment, machinery, and methods that have led to more advanced hardware and software, equipment with higher reliability and productivity, and other technological advancements. These actions have improved safety and productivity and have reduced casualties and maintenance workload. Although today’s mining equipment and machinery are technologically advanced and highly reliable, the risk of accidents is still relatively high and key performance indicators have not improved significantly compared to other industries (Sorensen, 2012). A prominent reason could be due to insignificant integration of human factors (HFs) as part of planning, operation, and maintenance activities. The current mining system is a people system, and inevitably HFs and human error (HE) figure prominently in all aspects of this industry. Even the most advanced technologies and innovations require operators and maintainers with significant knowledge and skill, which could increase the potential for HE."

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). "A Z1600 Jameson Cell Test Rig was rented for test work at Vale’s Clarabelle Mill operation. This paper discusses the evolution of renting the unit for test purposes to owning the unit and operating it as a revenue generating process component. The paper focuses on three aspects of the Z1600 project; the initial rental and installation, the test work performed in the cleaning circuit, and the business factors which led to the unit being permanently incorporated into the copper circuit.INTRODUCTION Clarabelle Mill is located in Sudbury Ontario (approximately 350 km north of Toronto) on the southwest rim of the Sudbury basin a meteoric impact crater that is 62 km long and 30 km wide. The result of the meteoric impact was concentrated nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and platinum group metal (PGM) ore bodies in the outer perimeter of the basin; described in more detail by Hanley (1957). Vale currently has seven operating mines in the Sudbury basin, from which nine distinct ore types are mined. Ores are also received from two QuadraFNX mines. Clarabelle Mill processes all of these ores for the Ontario Operations of Vale. The mill, commissioned in 1971, was originally built as one of four mills operated by then Inco Limited. Between the late 70’s and the early 90’s process changes were made to consolidate the Sudbury Operations milling processes into a single operating mill, Clarabelle Mill. In 1990, the SAG mill was installed resulting in peak mill throughput of 11.9 million short tons per annum (Mstpa), with typical throughputs of ~10 Mstpa. Mill average feed grades were 1.4% Cu and 1.2% Ni. During the resources boom, plans were developed to increase the mill capacity at Clarabelle Mill in stages to a final capacity of 13.5 Mstpa. The project known as the Clarabelle Mill Expansion and Recovery Project (CMERP) included expansion and reconfiguration of the grinding and flotation circuits. The first stage was a planned increase in grinding capacity with the reallocation of existing mills, the existing flotation capacity would be required to treat higher throughput until the new flotation circuit was constructed."

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. Persistent losses of leachable oxides at the Tailings Leach Plant were traced to inadequate leach residence time.SIDMIN is affordable because it can be implemented using basic optical microscopes, minimal quantities of micro-chemical reagents and custom trained site staff who demonstrate good colour perception and an ability to follow laid down procedures consistently."

"The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automation control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool.A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the “wish list” of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight by uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made.This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content."

In open stope mining borehole deviation is one of the main factors affecting the blasting results. Though previous research has identified some actual deviation patterns, these studies are unable to relate the hole deviation pattern with the blasting results and therefore it is not possible to modify the design or take remedial measures based on the prediction of the blasting results. An alternative to the conventional method for borehole surveying is the in-hole probing techniques. With their inherent errors, it is important to evaluate these surveying systems under conditions of different mine sites. The lack of available assessment methods has limited the application of these techniques. In this paper some of the characteristics of the actual hole deviation pattern are discussed based on data from surveying production holes in six stopes. A method of predicting the blasting results is proposed by considering the borehole deviation pattern. Based on the prediction stope design can be modified or further surveying is carried out to improve the blasting results. The tolerable error is introduced to relate the surveying error with the drilling pattern and therefore it is possible to assess various in-hole-surveying techniques.

"In order to study the support effect of concrete in the surrounding rock of a metal mine, the concrete and surrounding rock were comparatively studied. Firstly, the general situation of the ultra-kilometer deep shaft in Xincheng, surrounding rock and geological conditions are introduced. Secondly, the experimental scheme of material mechanical properties of surrounding rock and shaft lining concrete based on same standard dimension and shape are examined, and the mechanical tests of rock and concrete based on different shapes and sizes are carried out. The study shows that the compressive strength value and elastic modulus of the rock cube are 1.28 times and 1.78 times that of the cylinder, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.77 times. The dimensional effect law of the concrete cube and cylinder test data is consistent with the rock law. However, the test results of the concrete are less discrete than the rock; the test also shows that the strength and elastic modulus of the concrete lining of the main shaft of the Xincheng are much smaller than the surrounding rock that is also used as the concrete aggregate, which indicates that the support of concrete lining in the surrounding rock shaft behaved weakly. Based on the development of the modern NATM rock support theory, it is suggested that the mechanical test standard of artificial support materials should be unified into the mechanics test standard of natural rock, which will help to improve the accuracy and practicality of scientific calculation of geotechnical engineering.INTRODUCTIONConcrete and rock mass are usually attributed to a class of materials called frictional materials or geotechnical materials, of these two kinds of materials, the first is man-maded and the second is natural. The attentive scholar can find that there are many differences in the test criteria for the mechanical properties of the two kinds of materials among different industries or departments, reflecting the differences in their sources, tradition, and the application thoery of material strength among them.There is a situation wordwide, that there are many testing standards of the same material mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, compressive strength, etc. The cube with a side length of 150 mm is adopted as a common sample in the architecture department in China, while a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 100 mm is as a standard specimen in geotechnical department.Knowing that mechanical parameter values are strongly affected by the the size, shape of specimen and loading rate etc, that is to say the mechanical parameter values of the same material are completely different when obtained from different test with different standards. However, such a problem has been long neglected in geotechnical engineering."

"Solvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) is an economical option for the processing of low grade and oxidized copper ore. Phenomenological models were developed to simulate the copper solvent extraction and the electrowinning processes. The two models were linked together to make a SX/EW simulator. The simulator is used to predict the operation of the mines Gaspe pilot plant put in operation in 1996. Results confirm the potential of the simulation that would subsequently be used for student training, process optimization and to assess the performances of control strategies.INTRODUCTIONSolvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) has become in the last two decades a key process for the recovery of copper from solution obtained by leaching low grade copper ore. Several operations have been commissioned in North and South Americas in the last decade (Arbiter, 1994). In Canada, Gibraltar Mine (Scott, 1991) operates a SX plant followed by electrowinning (EW) to produce copper cathode from leached low-grade ore dumps. From 1996 to 1997 Mines Gaspe operated a pilot plant to test the economical feasibility of leaching an oxidized copper ore, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper. Despite copper SX/EW processes have the reputation of being low cost operations, plant engineers should always look at way to make the plant more efficient. Process models provide an economic platform to learn, control and ultimately optimize the operation of a plant.Several models have been independently proposed to simulate the SX process (Cadman and Hsu, 1970; Medina Gomez, 1980; Wilkinson and Ingham, 1983; Garcia et al., 1988; Aminian et al., 1997) and the EW process (Bryson, 1981; Barton and Scott, 1992; Barton and Scott, 1993). However few papers, if any, deal with the integration of the two process models into a single simulator of a SX-EW plant. This paper describes the development of an integrated simulator for the SX-EW process and shows some steady-state simulation runs of an actual SX-EW pilot plant. The paper consists of four sections. The first section shows the general layout and principles of operation of a SX-EW plant.The second section describes the SX model while the third section deals with the process model used for the copper electrowinning process. The last section shows how the two process models are linked to simulate the operation of the Gaspe pilot plant."

"Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes.
