The Dominion Observatory was founded in 1905 and, from the beginning, it work included research in both astronomical and geophysical science. During its first years, up to 1916, the Observatory also included geodetic surveying as part of it scientific program. Although, at the beginning of the century, geophysics did not have the close connection with mineral exploration that it now holds , the founders of the Observatory were men of vision, and they laid a solid foundation for the application of the techniques of geomagnetism, gravity and seismology to an understanding of the Canadian terrain of plain , mountains, seacoasts and shield area . The particular sphere which the Observatory occupies in the field of geophysics has been evolving over a period of many years and it has now a rather definite relation to the work of other government bodies, university science departments and industrial organizations. We have, for example, an over-all responsibility for the regional magnetic mapping of Canada and, as the magnetic field is subject to slow but steady changes, we produce new magnetic maps of the country every five years. These maps indicate the strength and direction of the magnetic field, the variation of the compass and the rate of change of the magnetic elements.

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

The basic factors -population growth and industrial development -which will create energy demand are so fundamental to national economies that the ascending energy demand curve will be little affected by short-term factors.Because of the economic and practical advantages of nuclear power and the degree of present acceptance by electric utilities, there is no doubt that uranium will be a principal source of primary energy in industrial countries -and this will happen within a decade. Indeed, during this period it will be the fastest growing source of energy, capturing, for example, more than half of the electric utilities' expansion in the United States by 1980. The ready availability of energy sources from domestic and foreign resources is so essential to industrial nations that the long-range outlook for their adequacy is of prime importance. There has been international concern about the availability of uranium resources at reasonable cost to adequately support and foster the development of the nuclear power industry. Canada, fortunate in having established reserves and a potential in excess of any forseeable domestic demand, can confidently look forward to being a principal supplier to the industry."

Men who work with metals today are a bit more realistic. I haven't heard of a metallurgist who expects to develop any one alloy that will resist all corrosive media. In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

Directionally solidified (DS) Rene 80 Superalloy was tested in thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) over the temperature range 500-900°C and plastic strain levels from 0.2 to 0.8% using a DSI Gleeble thermal simulator. Thermo-mechanical testing was carried out on the parent material in the conventional solution treated and aged condition (STA), as well as gas tungsten arc welded with an IN-738 filler, followed by solution treatment and ageing. Comparison of the base TMF unwelded alloy with that of the welded and heat treated alloy showed that varying crack initiation mechanisms, notably oxidation either by stress assisted grain boundary oxidation, or associated with grain boundary MC carbides fatigue crack propagation along grain boundaries and creep deformation were operating, leading to different "weakest link" failure initiation points.

The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. During the summer of 1938, prospecting was carried on beyond this circumscribed area. The geology and early developments in the area have been described in the following reports: (1) CLOTHIER, G. SOME small vanadium-bearing deposits on the west coast of British Columbia about 100 miles north of Vancouver are of interest for several reasons. They are of a type that is, so far as we know, unique. They are difficult to identify as being vanadiferous so that, unless they are described, other similar deposits could easily pass unrecognized. Furthermore, although none of them has as yet been proven to be of commercial proportions, no good reason is apparent why larger, and therefore valuable, deposits should not occur under similar geological conditions. The original discovery on Quadra island was made in 1932 and has been recorded by H. V. Ellsworth and H. C. Gunning (l). Since 1932, prospecting in the area has revealed other similar deposits, one about a mile south of the original and another some ten miles to the east, near Menzies bay on Vancouver island. The Quadra Island showings are a mile and a half north of the head of Gowland harbour, a small inlet that is easily reached by gas boat from Campbell river, about four miles to the southeast on Vancouver island. The deposits were examined by the writers in the spring of 1943 in connection with field work sponsored by the Department of Geology, University of British Columbia. We are indebted to Mr. G. A. Dirom and Mr. Lothrop, of Vancouver, for helpful data on the Menzies Bay deposits, and to Dr. V. Dolmage for making a brief trip to Gowland harbour and discussing the deposits.

"IntroductionTHE ORE PASS raise system at the H.B. mine as contracted by the Patrick Harrison Company consisted of two raises 6 ft. by 10 ft. in section •at 60 degrees to the horizontal. No. 88-88 raise, the longer of the two, was a straight raise 690 feet long, with access only from the bottom. In addition, this raise had two branch knuckle-backs only one of which was driven by. the Patrick Harrison Company. The other, known as 88-89 raise, was 540 feet long with knuckle-backs at 280 feet and 410 feet. Its access, also, was from the bottom (see Figure 1)."

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. Interaction between mattes having various compositions and solutions with a wide range of free acid and non-ferrous metals concentration have been studied in terms of chemistry, mechanism and kinetics. The solution acidity and oxidizers to reducers ratio in the matte-solution-gas phase system have been demonstrated to be the major factors determining the process behaviour. It was found that the types of copper and nickel secondary sulphides resulted from nonferrous metals precipitation from solution, depend on of the solution and initial matte composition. Based on these studies, technologies of matte leaching and nonferrous metal precipitation in the form of rich sulphide concentrates are developed.

Taphole integrity is critical to all furnaces, but it is especially important in high intensity electric furnaces processing matte and metal of high superheat. Key furnace dimensions are the electrode proximity to the taphole, hearth sump below the taphole and the shape and location of the taphole in the furnace wall (e.g., circular versus rectangular furnace). In addition, electric furnace power density needs to be matched appropriately to any configuration to achieve operational reliability and furnace integrity. The role of furnace dimensioning is generically reviewed across many pyrometallurgical processes to explore potential impact on furnace taphole performance. Some empirical furnace dimensions and power density ratios of industrial furnaces are then compared to explore to what extent they may indeed influence taphole integrity.

"In 1988, two of the present authors Warner and Vahed [1] were amongst several co-authors on a seminal paper reviewing nickel pyrometallurgical operations of the era. Given that significant changes in the nickel industry have occurred since that time, including the overall political landscape, technology, the overall world energy picture, the countries sourcing nickel and finally the nickel market itself, the present authors considered it timely to provide a 2015 update. In 1988, total world nickel production from sulphide and laterite sources, including production in the former "Centrally Planned Economies"- was about 0.86 million tonnes/a, while in 2014 total world nickel production reached an all-time high of almost 2 million tonnes/a - some 230% higher. On the other hand, while in 1988, about 94% of world nickel was produced pyrometallurgically and of the order of 33% via laterites, today, about 88% of nickel is by pyrometallurgy, with some 41% from laterites, thus showing that more nickel is now sourced from laterites, a trend which is expected to continue.During the period under review, new processing technologies were developed and introduced, along with substantial improvements in both the technologies employed and the scale of operations. Significant productivity gains have been achieved in sulphide pyrometallurgy in part through more efficient mineral processing, particularly in pyrrhotite rejection, and the use of ever larger-scale process equipment. This made it possible to treat lower grade and more complex ores. The significant game-changer from a production perspective was the introduction in the early 2000s of nickel pig iron (NPI) in China via modified iron blast furnace smelting, an old technology long ago cast aside by other nickel producing countries. With the exception of the emergence of this new NPI capacity in China, in the laterite industry modernization and expansion of existing operations has been employed to gain productivity, to cut costs and/or offset the effect of declining ore grades. The NPI technology development has become a game changer in the traditional global supply and demand relationship, opening up a new frontier to supply nickel to low grade utility steel producers. One other key nickel development was the Indonesian ban on nickel ore exports effective in January 2014, thus effectively curtailing NPI production at existing Chinese plants, but on the other hand, potentially prompting new smelting facilities in Indonesia. This paper reviews and updates major pyrometallurgical sulphide and laterite operations worldwide, including changes in nickel extractive metallurgy. It also provides a brief review of new developments in pyrometallurgical operations, with special focus on the NPI process and presents an outlook of the potential future direction of the industry."

Partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) has been proven to be an excellent candidate as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) for hot sections in, for instance, heat or internal engines and gas turbine parts. The main functions of these coatings are reduction of heat losses, reduction of fuel consumption, increasing efficiency, and extending durability and life. One of the main problems involved is wear behavior in the development of such coatings for these applications. Using air plasma spraying (APS) technique, conventional and nanostructured 8 wt % yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) coatings were deposited on austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) disc-shaped substrates. The coated substrates were subjected to pin-on-disc wear tests, using 10 mm silicon nitride and zirconia balls as the pin. The coefficient of friction was recorded in real time. The weight loss of coated substrates was measured. Coatings were characterized before and after being subjected to wear testing by various techniques including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Effects of various experimental parameters such as wear distance, test temperature, and counterface material were also investigated. Results obtained revealed that, regardless of experimental conditions applied, the nanostructured zirconia coating shows better wear and tribological properties than those of the conventional one.

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

"The Pronto Mine located at the east end of Lake Lauzon, Long Township, some 12 miles east of Blind River is of historic note being the discovery locality and the first producing mine of the Elliot Lake uranium camp. Radioactive bedrock was discovered in 1949, a commercial deposit was verified in 1953 and production commenced in 1955. Production continued to April 1960: total tons milled 2,264,404 from which 4,643,835 pounds U,O, were recovered at a recovered grade of 2.05 pounds U3O8 per short ton.The orebody is in a bed of pyritic quartz pebble conglomerate at the base of the Matinenda Formation of the Elliot Lake Group of the Huronian Supergroup. The rocks strike east and dip 15 degrees to 20 degrees south and unconformably overlie Early Precambrian granite, the upper surface of which is marked by a regolith. Several diabase dykes cut the orebody which is also affected by albite, chlorite, and carbonate-rich alterations. To the south the orebody is cut by a fault. The orebody is 6to 10 feet but locally 10 to 15 feet thick, has a strike length of 3,500 feet and extends down dip for 3,600 feet to a depth of 1,000feet. Some 300,000 tons of ore grade mineralization remain in the deeper portion of the mine.IntroductionThe Pronto Mine, (Photo I) at the east end of Lake Lauzon in Long Township some 12 miles east of Blind River, is of particular interest as being the discovery site and the first producing mine of the Elliot Lake camp.Production at the Pronto Mine commenced in 1955 and continued until 1960 when the mill was converted to treat copper ore from the nearby Pater Mine at Spragge.
