Imagine a æshinyÆ new mine, $1 B in the bank and record commodity prices. So how does a company and its management team create enough tension to maximise profit and to establish a culture that can weather the good and bad times?That was exactly the situation the team at OZ MineralsÆ world class Prominent Hill mine in South Australia faced in 2009.Three years later, the harder times have come - lower though still healthy commodity prices, rising industry costs, fierce competition for talent, geological and technical issues (common to developing mines). However, the company was able to maximise profit during the good times and equip the culture to deal with the tougher times with minimal turnover.Through the combination of simple systems and processes, people development, application of commercial technical acumen and a combination of yin and yang leadership, OZ Minerals has achieved something quite rare - sustainable continuous improvement.The journey started with a vision. The EGM Operations created the æsparkÆ. The dream was to create a æfranchise mineÆ that could be rolled out to new mines and acquisitions as the company grew. However, the real leadership came from his lieutenants who provided the important yin and yang. The GM commercial provided the tools, processes, systems and the bottom line focus. The GM operations focused on culture, leadership, training and sustainability. This powerful combination (along with some good old persistence) was able to create the critical mass required to make continuous improvement go æviralÆ.This paper explores this unique case to uncover the essential ingredients that were created and mixed together. Reporting Codes are not prescriptive on methodologies to report or classify Mineral Resource Estimation results, but the assessment of risk and uncertainty is required, and is likely to be increasingly important in future Code updates. The 2012 JORC Code indicates that relative confidence in tonnage-grade estimations should be considered for classification, and that there should be a discussion of relative accuracy and confidence levels in the Mineral Resource Estimate. These considerations are also relevant to the drill hole spacing required for various classification categories, along with other geological and data quality criteria. This paper summarises the theory, principles and current practice of various drill hole spacing analysis techniques for both achieving a desired level of resource categorisation and for optimising grade control or resource drill-out costs. The authors provide practitioners with a guide in their use to assess uncertainty and relative accuracy, as illustrated by a number of case studies. While all drill hole spacing studies rely on the assumption of consistency of the continuity model from current to future drilling, the range of methods available provide much more objective outcomes than previously adopted ‘rules-of-thumb’.

The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

Overlying the coal deposits of the Sydney Basin are several lakes and other bodies of water. These include the Pacific Ocean, Lake Macquarie, the Tuggerah Lakes and the stored waters of the dams of the New South Wales Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board. The coal beneath these bodies of water amounts to hundreds of millions of tons. Colliery workings have approached these areas of water and in some instances first 1"orkings of bord and pillar have taken place oi_eshh the water. he problem which now faces mine manage- and other interested authorities involves the determination of the maximum ;mount of coal which can be safely extracted from beneath the water. There are many factors to be considered including the depth of cover, seam thickness, geological details and strata movements.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. In current mining practices it is desirable to bring about a substantial increase in both rate of face advance and productivity, thus compelling the mine engineer to consider better and more productive ways of mining. Transportation plays a vital role in achieving improved productivity. This paper focuses on horizontal transportation systems. Horizontal transportation is defined from the shaft station area to the end of the stope cross-cut. Traditionally, horizontal transportation is inefficient in comparison to vertical transportation efficiencies and accounts for a high proportion of South African mine accidents. Thus, the role of horizontal transportation has been investigated in detail, as it offers the greatest chance for improvement. The purpose of the paper is to provide a best practice guideline for the design of horizontal underground transport systems. It is intended that the document be used by mine designers and planners as an aide memoir during the design process and benefit may well be gained from retrofit and reorganisation activity. The paper looks at transport systems suitable for deep level gold mining in South Africa and evaluates such items as management, scheduling, and haulage systems. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.

The internal stratigraphy of the Marillana Creek palaeochannel Tertiary channel iron deposits (CID) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia was initially defined in the 1980s and redefined as the Marillana Formation in the early 2000s. Recent drilling, open pit mining and field observations in the Western deposits at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek tenements have revealed some additional details on the extent and detail of some units of the Marillana Formation stratigraphy in this area. The drill hole data at Western 1 South has identified a number of features either not previously documented in this area or whose significance has not been adequately recognised, including a denatured zone at the base of the Upper CID of the Barimunya Member, and variations in the lithology within the Munjina Member at the base of the channel. Additionally, the Western 4 pit walls show evidence of a significant near-surface clay horizon and overlying CID, which are suggested to be the equivalent of the Iowa Eastern Member in the Eastern deposits. The deposition of this unit was most likely driven by a regional climatic disruption rather than a change in sediment source area alone. The nature of the Weeli Wolli Formation-derived goethitic peloids in the Western deposits may explain the more extensive denaturing in the Western Lower CID of the Barimunya Member. In contrast, the more robust nature of the haematitic-cored pelletoids in the Central and Eastern deposits has resulted in a less denatured Lower CID in these areas. Such work reveals the value of and need for geologistsÆ ongoing face mapping observations and detailed drill hole logging, and cautions against not querying previously accepted interpretations.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. Economic conditions dictated the lead time from concept to commissioning of the Kambalda C.I.P. Plant. The high gold price prevailing at the time the Victory ore-body was discovered provided the impetus to establish a treatment plant with the utmost haste. Consequently only limited metallurgical testing was possible. Fortunately the Kambalda Metallurgical Department had experienced gold metallurgists among its' staff. This enabled a rapid assessment to be made of the ore types to be treated. Flexibility was the keynote in the plant design. Overseas practice and experience was drawn upon extensively, but it was known that problems uniquE to the Kambalda Plant would be encountered due to the high nickel content of the C.I.P. Plant feed and the difficult clays in some of the areas. These fears were well founded and problems have been experienced. However the plant design has enabled these problems to be absorbed, if not overcome, and design production rates were achieved and maintained within three month; of start-up.

As part of the current NERDDC funded project studying Dragline/Hopper/ Crusher/Conveyor systems for overburden removal, an investigation was carried out to assess the feasibility of automating the swing-to-dump phase of the dragline digging cycle in order to main- tain consistent performance of spotting the bucket above the hopper prior to dumping. The study involved design of automatic position controls for the hoist, drag and swing drives and simulation of detailed mathe- matical models of the three electromechanical systems and their associated electrical control schemes. The design of the hoist and drag systems to position the bucket in the boom plane is relatively straightforward. Simulation results show fast and accurate performance, with no evidence of interaction between the two drive systems through the ropes. The design of the swing position control system involves special strate- gies to cater for variable inertia and to damp the pendulum oscillations of the bucket. The use of a bucket pendulum model and variable dynamic compensation embedded within the feedback control loop, along with optimal speed/angle slowdown trajectories, has yielded fast and damped positioning responses under simulation.

The decoppering of soft and hard leads was investigated by stirring in an open pot, using sulfur or sulfur plus pyrites, or sulfur plus pyrrhotite, as reagents. Lead samples taken during the process were analysed for copper. Dross samples were examined by optical micro- scope, SEM and XRD. Soft lead containing silver can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at low temperatures - close to 330¦C. Soft lead, whether containing silver or not, can be decoppered satisfactorily at higher temperatures by stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites. Then CuFeS2, Cu5FeS4 and PbS are formed, instead of Cu2S, CuS and PbS when using S alone. Hard lead containing tin can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at temperatures from 320-400¦C. When stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites, reversion of copper from dross to lead on prolonged stirring does not occur. Hard lead without tin can be decoppered with S plus pyrites better than with S alone, but the presence of antimony hinders the decoppering, which is less effective on lead with 5.5% Sb than with 2.3% Sb.

Where vertical or near vertical faces are required in open excavations in soils and rocks, some form of stabilization of the 'cut is often necessary. Stressed anchors either alone or in combination with steel, timber or concrete-lagging are often an economical and versatile means of providing support. Stressed anchors are also-a very economical means of anchoring a wide range of structures such as dams, cranes, transmission towers, retaining walls, spillway aprons, bridge piers; and - stacks. The anchors need not be stressed always on installation.other than to proof load them. A number of examples illustrate some of-the more practical aspects of.the design and construction techniques used. No new methods of design or construction are involved, but merely some consolidation of the engineering design, soil and rock mechanics,thinking applied to the stressed anchor tech- nique.

The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

Since 1958 there have been 16 major coal mine explosions in the U.S. claiming 323 lives. Whilst the exact cause of a number of these incidents has not been determined, the majority has involved gas ignitions in one way or another. In addition there have been fatal gas explosions in salt mines and vapor explosions in oil mines. Furthermore, many of the oil shale mines in the U.S. have proven to be gassy giving cause for concern. Compounding these problems is the fact that frictional ignition of methane in coal mines has dramatically increased over the past several years; over 100 such ignitions were reported in 1979. While, no fatalities have been attributed to frictional ignition in the U.S. since early 1978, a recent mine explosion in Nova Scotia which resulted in 11 fatalities was attributed to a frictional face ignition. Research being conducted at the Bureau of Mines is aimed at the prevention and suppression of gas explosions. Emphasis is placed on new coal cutter bits for reducing ignition frequency, machine-mounted water sprays for preventing frictional face ignitions and automatic devices for quenching incipient ignitions and fully developed gas explosions.

There is growing interest in the mining industry on the application of ore sorting. While many are familiar with particle sorting, including the limitations that technology presents (e.g. throughput), bulk sorting, with its higher throughput potential, is less understood. Despite the potential to sort at higher throughputs, few operations have adopted bulk sorting processes, certainly not at large scale. It is suggested that the inability to reliably predict outcomes from bulk sorting may be limiting its adoption in mining projects. Consequently, an evaluation approach for bulk ore sorting has been developed such that mass pulls and grade upgrades can be predicted in the context of a mining study. The approach allows for evaluation of drill core assays and application of the consequently derived heterogeneity relationships to the block model for estimation of sorting outcomes. These processes were applied to conveyor-based bulk sorting for the CuMo project in Idaho, USA and are described in this paper.

At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. Comparison of the Zadra, Anglo-American and organic solvent procedures for desorption of gold from activated carbon loaded in carbon-in-pulp gold circuits indicates that the Anglo American and the organic solvent procedures are considerably more effective than the commonly used Zadra procedure. Organic solvent elution procedures, particularly those using acetonitrile and acetone, can provide effective gold elution and very high concentrations of gold in eluate solutions. The operational simplicity and effectiveness of the Anglo American procedure would appear to make it the most satisfactory procedure available at the present time but this may change as the solvent elution procedures become better developed. INTRODUCTION The carbon-in-pulp technique has been introduced into the gold processing industry to by-pass the often lengthy CCD and filtration steps required in the conventional Merrill Crowe cyanidation procedure for gold recovery. Adsorption of gold on to carbon is also a valuable technique for recovering trace amounts of gold from low level waste streams from conventional processing procedures.
