Recent work has shown that, in at least some instances of regional metamorphism, metamorphic diffusion has been restricted to such relatively minute distances (of the order of 1.0 mm and much less), that there is no clear, direct evidence of prograde metamorphic mineral reactions, and that metamorphic equilibrium does not appear to have been attained through even very small domains.A number of stratiform orebodies and their immediate metapelitic environments exhibit very large, seemingly "disequilibrium", assemblages of regional metamorphic index materials. One such, in north-eastern Australia, includes laumontite, prehnite, chamosite, stilpnomelane and related hydrous iron silicates, primary chlorite, sericite-muscovite, epidote, actinolite, biotite, almandine, andradite, metamorphic hornblende and clinopyroxene, scapolite, staurolite and sillimanite, all within a 20 metres length of a single diamond drill core. In this and several related occurrences it appears that metamorphism has involved very small scale in situ transformation of pre-existing materials rather than large-scale diffusion and reaction, and hence that the observed metamorphic minerals have probably been derived directly from precursor materials of sedimentary/diagenetic origin.It is concluded that the fluctuating seafloor interplay between warm, acid, concentrated hydrothermal waters with cold, alkaline, dilute seawater during stratiform ore formation, together with diagenetic processes, leads to the formation of a wide range of clay, chlorite, mixed-layer clay and clay/chlorite, and zeolite precursor materials and hence, later, to the complex assemblages of metamorphic minerals closely associated with some stratiform ores. Commonly included in highly localized assemblages of this kind are various minerals which, in conventional regional metamorphic studies, are generally regarded as indicating widely different grades of metamorphism.

A 32-channel PSS seismic monitoring system was commissioned at Mt Charlotte mine in 1994, and at the time it was the first such system in Australian mines. The system continuously observes the occurrence of seismic events and locates them accurately in space and time. Mt Charlotte has a history of seismicity, with the largest event in recent years of Richter magnitude 4.3. The decision to 'go seismic' was made despite some uncertainty regarding its potential usefulness. However after the first year of operation, benefits have been realised in terms of less production downtime, improved mine safety and mine planning, and better understanding of the nature of Mt Charlotte seismicity. The seismic network has performed well, recording 550 events in its first year of operation to a location accuracy averaging ¦ 12 metres. System reliability is excellent, with very little downtime, and acceptable operation and maintenance times and costs. Observations show major distinct changes in the rate of mining induced seismicity over time periods of weeks and months. Events have tended to cluster in specific mine areas and on particular faults and structures. Case examples of pillar preconditioning, breakout around an orepass, and a major stope rockburst, illustrate the role of seismic data and the benefits it brings to safety, productivity and planning.

With commodities suffering dramatically low real prices, mining business margins are under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, management systems developed early this century for manufacturing are driving counterproductive behaviours that choke productivity. The paper and presentation will explain this and present a proven methodology for increasing productivity. This will be supported by operational examples from Australian and American mining management to demonstrate the importance of modern business performance measurement and analysis systems. It will explain the importance of management systems in driving organisational change to sustain superior productivity and margins. The paper will explain why many executives and managers confuse production (a measure of volume) with productivity (which measures efficiency and effectiveness). It will explain how this and other counterproductive managerial and operator behaviours and attitudes are driven by traditional business management systems exacerbated by managerial and consulting fads. The paper will begin with the simple principle that to improve results one needs to first improve the process producing the result û and will show how this is often violated. Improving productivity then boils down to:accurately identifying opportunities using sound, modern measurement, analysis and reporting systems; methodically improving operating and commercial processes, and changing peopleÆs behaviours and attitudes to sustain changes in practices. The paper will include fundamentals of applying sound measurement and analysis to:processes directly, eg cycle time charts and their impact in cyclical (non-continuous) operations commonly used in rock breakage; drivers of productivity; and process results themselves since correct analysis identifies opportunities accurately. The paper will cover the importance of practical leadership and the need to follow a simple, solid plan for changing systems that drive behaviour. Overall, it will highlight use of modern performance Measurement, Analysis and Reporting systems to drive behaviours and improve margins - without capital investment û and make executive and managerial work easier and more effective.

The traditional engineering approach to assessing stability is based on comparing resisting force (capacity) to driving force (demand), or strength to working stress. In underground coal geomechanics, considerable effort has been expended on quantifying the strength of rock structures. However, this has not been matched by advances in determining the load acting on these structures, reflecting a reluctance by some to embrace numerical modelling to assess load magnitudes and distributions. Numerical modelling is a valuable aid as loading environments are a function of both the stiffness of the mine workings and the stiffness of the superincumbent strata and are statically indeterminate in most cases.This paper defines stiffness, which is often confused with elastic modulus. It shows that, effectively, stiffness encapsulates geology, depth of mining, panel width, pillar width and mining height. Therefore, these factors are variables that need to be taken into account when determining stress magnitudes and distributions about mine workings. A range of examples are presented that illustrate the significance of the stiffness of the superincumbent strata on surface subsidence; the magnitude and distribution of pillar and abutment load; and aspects of bord and pillar mining, pillar extraction and longwall mining. These examples provide bases for identifying the limitations of some empirical approaches to mine design, identifying how to compensate for some of these in design processes; and emphasising the need to make greater use of numerical modelling in understanding and quantifying loading environments in underground coal mining.CITATION:Galvin, J M, 2014. This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

Accurate computer prediction of the muck pile produced by a conventional blast requires modeling of the physics that occurs during the rock motion phase of a blast. The ability to predict the motion and the subsequent muck pile can have a significant economic impact on the mining industry. Some of the computer programs previously used to predict rock motion employed polygonal elements with comers and sides to model the rock (Cundall, 1971; Walton, 1982; Taylor, 1983). This approach allows the elements to bulk because of the corners and the aspect ratio. However, tracking the many interactions of the comers and sides of the elements is a computationally intensive process. Several other rock motion computer programs were developed that employed spherical elements, (Schamaun, 1984; Gorham-Bergeron et al, 1987) but they lacked correct bulking mechanisms or could not be vectorized for efficient execution on vector processing machines. A new spherical element code called DMC (Distinct Motion Code) (Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b) has been developed this past year. DMC was designed and written to take advantage of super-computer vector processing capabilities. The efficiency has also been increased through the use of spherical elements, explicit time integration and a new contact search algorithm. When spherical elements were chosen for efficiency, some physically correct mechanisms for capturing the bulking behavior of the rock mass also had to he developed. This paper will treat several mechanisms that were developed to allow spherical elements to exhibit correct hulking behavior.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Disseminated, gold-bearing sulfide minerals hosted in sheared, wall rock metasediments and clay alteration zones comprise one of the dominant styles of Palaeozoic orogenic gold mineralisation within the Reefton Goldfield, and is exemplified by OceanaGold’s Globe Mine. This study begins the exploration and characterisation of the gold-arsenic-antimony mineralisation hosted within the dominant lithologies of the Globe-Progress shear zone. The main gold-bearing sulfides are pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are not compositionally uniform across the Globe-Progress shear zone. Pyrite from the mineralised greywacke and argillite has higher As contents than pyrite in the host rock and pug breccia. Furthermore, the mineralised greywacke and argillite pyrite are enriched in As from core to rim. The 3D models based on bulk assays reveal a significant correlation in the distribution of Au, As and Sb. The interpolant for Sb envelops those for Au and As, which in turn are very similar to each other in their vertical and lateral extents across the shear zone. This result is consistent with earlier findings that the occurrence of stibnite represents a separate and likely later phase of mineralisation relative to that represented by the formation of disseminated pyrite and arsenopyrite both of which exert a stronger control on the distribution of As.CITATION:Durance, P M J, Christie, A B, McIntosh, C and Carder, M, 2015. Transportation of iron ore from the mine to the plant is critical to business success. Ore from the mine may have to be transported across states, countries and even continents to get to the processing plant or export facilities, and ultimately to the client. Numerous transportation steps may result in potential logistical difficulties. Companies are continually seeking ways to increase production rates, decrease delivery times and reduce operating costs. Transportation cost is a major component of the total cost of mining iron ore and therefore requires effective use of transport systems.Bottlenecks in iron ore transport systems, due to material handling issues, can result in loss in profit in the order of millions of dollars per hour. Bottlenecks can be seen anywhere in the transport system where the desired flow rate cannot be achieved. These bottlenecks occur for various reasons such as increasing throughput in a transport system originally designed for a lower throughput resulting in plugged transfer chutes, changing material characteristics (eg finer material, increased moisture content), changing to a new type of material or blend that again alters handleability, or changes in operational philosophy due to equipment availability or process utilisation.Stockpiles may have limited live capacity such that an adequate amount of ore may not be readily reclaimed when required (eg to fill a complete train’s railcars). In bins and hoppers, material may discharge through a central flow channel resulting in the formation of a stable rathole, which can then collapse causing material to flood the downstream system and cause significant downtime for clean-up (eg railcars beneath train load outs). In transfer chutes, bottlenecks can be caused by pluggages or downtime required for the change-out of liners due to excessive wear. In ship loading, long settling or de-aeration time, or material exceeding its transportable moisture limit (TML) may result in further bottlenecks. These bottlenecks all have associated costs because of the need to address their causes and because of the lost opportunities for throughput.This paper will discuss how bulk material technology and proper understanding of material flow characteristics can be applied to mitigate bottlenecks. The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. Remote monitoring of geological situation at distant regions with complicated relief, including reliable detection of the rock falls and estimation of the scale of accidents, is of great importance for practical needs. In the paper, vibration data, caused by fall of sample objects and registered by cable sensors, are processed and analysed in order to construct some measure for the indirect evaluation of weight of fallen objects. Nonlinear models, which based on artificial neural networks (ANN), are proposed for the signal presentation. To improve and simplify the learning and classification abilities of the whole system, the aggregative learning method (ALM) is implemented. ALM features relatively low memory and computational resources needed for the procedure realisation, especially for data classification (recall) stage, in compare to conventional methods. The validity and efficiency of the proposed approach are tested through its application for rock fall detection and weight evaluation system using cable sensors and mobile communication network. Classification abilities of the proposed approach are shown useful for estimation of the fallen object weight. Characterised with high computational efficiency and simple decisionmaking procedure, the derived method can be useful for simple and reliable real-time monitoring system design.

High temperatures and pressures are required to obtain acceptable stripping rates. Higher chemically induced stripping rates could reduce the need for higher temperatures which lead to cyanide losses. The higher rates could lead to lower carbon inventories and higher gold production. This paper reports laboratory and continuous test unit data which strongly suggest that the preceding can be achieved. New stripping agents demonstrate efficient stripping under conditions of cyanide depletion such as after carbon acid washing. Stripping times for gold and silver can be reduced by at least half compared to caustic cyanide through the use of these novel substances.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. "Hanwha Mining Services was approached by Glencore Coal to provide a series of (trial) demonstration blasts at its Clermont coalmine. The intent of the project was to trial a bulk explosive product that would be able to provide sufficient energy for the ground type encountered without production of post-blast fume. Three blasts were loaded using the patented XLOAD bulk explosives with a density of 1.00 g/cc. XLOAD bulk products are water resistant explosives that can be loaded at densities much lower than traditional (generic) water resistant heavy ammonium nitrate – fuel oil (ANFO) or pumped blends with significantly reduced risk of fume. In addition, these products have detonation characteristics that generally deliver a higher heave partition than conventional bulk products and hence improve muck pile looseness and digability.The priority key performance measures included the absence of fume from blasting, being at least cost neutral and providing similar if not improved shovel dig rates. The design for the initial blast took a conservative approach to ensure the key blast outcomes of fume control and fragmentation were achieved.The second blast used the same pattern dimensions as the benchmark bulk product used in this area to provide a cost neutral comparison with the benchmark products that had been used over the prior six months. This resulted in a 20 per cent lower powder factor than would have otherwise been used. To test the suitability of XLOAD, this shot was slept for over two weeks between loading and firing in geology where the sleep time is typically kept to a few days to minimise the fume risk.The third blast utilised a slightly larger drill pattern to push the capabilities of XLOAD and provide a cost neutral comparison between the trial product and the traditional benchmark products. All three blasts were fired with no fume observed, no recordable incidents and good fragmentation. Shovel productivity from all three of the trial blasts was excellent with higher average instantaneous dig rates being recorded (average six per cent improvement against the instantaneous dig rates recorded for the benchmark blasts).Citation:Rock, J and Bambrook, K, 2016. The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. This resulted in a deterioration in metallurgical performance with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues at each concentrator. Investigations to determine the cause of the problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical Deterioration.

Thiourea leaching has been applied to a refractory gold concentrate previously treated by bacterial oxidation. Following the bio-oxidation, gold has been leached in acidic thiourea solutions, under different pH(1 - 2.4), thiourea concentrations (2 - 15 g/1), ferric ion concentrations (0.04 - 3 g/1) and temperatures (298 - 333 K). Through this procedure, it was possible to increase gold extraction from 40 to 77 per cent. The increase in temperature raised gold extraction and reduced reagent consumption. Sodium sulphite addition was also very effective in lowering thiourea consumption. Staged leaching operations with interstage acid washing and carbon-in-leach experiments were tested, in an attempt to increase gold extraction. The results of thiourea leaching were compared with those obtained with cyanidation.
