Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. The preparation of separate zinc concentrates and lead concentrates from these samples, and their assaying, was conducted by Mr. Evan Hardy, for the North Broken Hill Mine, and its assodated leases, and by Mr. D., Swan, under the direction of Dr. J. After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

The timber township of Powelltown, Victoria lies N.E. of Yarra Junction, 60 miles east of Melbourne and in the site of the mill of the Victorian Hardwood Company Proprietary Ltd.A lift gauge railway owned by the company connects Yarra Junction on the Warburton line, with the township through two or three smaller mill centres on the way.The company has been operating for some 12 years. In the divide, about four miles from Powelltown, between the Little Yarra and Latrobe rivers, cutting was continued with material being handled by winch and double incline haulage over the divide. A small bush locomotive dealt with the traffic between the divide and the cutting site.In order to reduce costs, which were heavy at the haulage, the company decided to make a continuous railway from Powelltown to the bush by means of a tunnel through the divide.Hand bore holes were put down on the proposed line of tunnel and showed that the divide at this point consisted of decomposed depth of about 100 ft. towards the eastern or Latrobe side - and that the undecomposed granite summit lay to the west of the surface summit.The bores also served to locate the underground water line, this was afterwards found to rise and fall with wet and weather.To avoid tunnelling in hard and heavy water, the grading of the was laid out with the summit of the hard granite the point in the line.

The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work.   Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained.   This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. n the early days of the Hauraki goldfield (1866 to 1889) almost the only system of ore treatment was wet crushing followed by copper plate amalgamation. A further saving of bullion was in most cases obtained from the tailings by means of pans or berdans. Though this system was not always as efficient as might have been desired it answered fairly well for the bulk of the gold-bearing quartz of the Thames and Coromandel districts, where the gold occurs chiefly in the form of visible particles, and there is not a great deal of silver. It failed, however, with most of the ore found in the Upper Thames or Ohinemuri district, especially in the Karangahake and Waihi portions of the field. In those days the cyanide process was not, and the usual prescription of the mining " expert" was smelting. At Karangahake, many attempts were made to discover a payable method of treatment for the so-called" refractory" ore, but on thewhole with very 'little success, and the district struggled along for a number of years without adding very materially to the production of gold in New Zealand. At Waihi, the Martha Co.'s stamp battery treated by wet crushing and copper plate amalgamation some 18,000 tons from the Martha Reef, worth probablyat least £4 per ton, but the average return was considerably less than £1 per ton, a sum which barely paid working, expenses, and consequently the shareholders were glad...

The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. The Taharoa ironsand deposit covers approximately 16 km2 and is located 144 km south of Auckland on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The heavy mineral-rich sands predominantly contain titanomagnetite, ilmenite and hematite, along with lesser amounts of amphiboles, pyroxenes, and feldspars. Throughout the Taharoa mine site 142 samples were collected of which approximately 25 samples were used in mineralogical analyses of the magnetic, heavy non-magnetic and light non-magnetic fractions. Mineralogical and petrographic analyses confirmed the high abundance of homogeneous magnetite and magnetite containing ilmenite exsolution lamellae which have oxidised to hematite. A limited number of sand samples were collected from Taranaki beaches. Petrography reveals exsolution textures of magnetite and ilmenite (now hematite), and homogenous magnetite grains similar to those observed at Taharoa. Petrographic analyses from previous research projects were also closely investigated in order to make mineralogical comparisons from along the west coast of the North Island and with other potential source areas. The origin of detrital magnetite grains along the west coast of the North Island is generally presumed to be the eroded volcanic cones of the Egmont volcanoes and active and dormant volcanoes of the central North Island. Electron microprobe analyses of magnetite grains from Taranaki beach samples reveal TiO2 values of between 1.5 and 120 per cent. MgO and A12O3 contents also vary widely from 0.75 to 6.5 per cent. This large variability may reflect different volcanic eruptions, the presence of exsolution textures or alternative source areas for these magnetite grains. Geochemical results from the Taharoa mine site correlate with the Taranaki beach samples suggesting that the Egmont volcanoes are certainly one source area. Variability in XRF results, especially Fe and Ti contents (9.04 - 59.22 and 0.80 - 4.64 respectively), from the magnetic and heavy non-magnetic fractions likely reflect the detrital nature of this deposit.

( The central part of the Gippsland Basin is surrounded by existing major Petroleum accumulations and although six exploration wells have been drilled in the area, none are significant petroleum discoveries. Post drilling analyses indicate that the wells were drilled off structure due to the presence of high-velocity Miocene channels. These channels contain carbonates of significantly higher interval velocity than the surrounding sediments. Problems with seismic interpretation were thus encountered in the development of prospects in the central part of the Gippsland Basin as part of a BMR prospectivity study. The seismic interpretation problems associated with the Miocene channels are two-way time pull-ups at the underlying top of Latrobe Group and deeper levels on the seismic sections. Interpreted seismic sections passing through some of the exploration wells and the Miocene channels are presented to illustrate the configurations of these channels and the pullup effect associated with them. Two different methods of depth conversion were applied, one for the area below the high velocity channels and the other for the area away from the channel. The application of these two methods of depth conversion were found to be reasonably successful in correcting for the pull-ups caused by the high velocity Miocene channels. Mapping of the events near the top of Latrobe Group and near Base Lower L balmei seismic horizons has led to the identification of several potential structural closures. Further exploration efforts are necessary in this area to test these closures.

With the steady increase of molybdenum demand worldwide and the favorable molybdenum market, many technological innovations on both process and equipment have been developed and applied in many modern molybdenum plants around the world. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions. The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.
