The Mineral Resources Audit is a five-year Program established to produce a comprehensive and objective assessment of the mineral resources of New South Wales, including prospective resources. The goals of the Program are to improve planning and land use decision-making; attract exploration and minerals related investment; help the Department to identify and fill gaps in knowledge; and develop methods to identify and quantify resource potential and prospectivity. To achieve the goals of the Audit it is necessary to assemble and enhance a large amount of information and it is necessary to spatially analyse this information using computer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which allow the collection, storage, transformation and display of large quantities of spatial data. An extensive range of both map-based and textual data can be employed in spatial analysis and resources and geoscience modelling. In order to use this information, data sets have to be corrected and standardised. Many data sets need to be classified. An objective of the Audit Program is the spatial analysis of the State, region-by-region, and the release of cleaned-up multiple digital data sets as packages which include upgraded mineral deposit information, 'seamless' geological map layers showing lithology, structures and stratigraphy, and processed and classified geophysical map layers. These regional packages are important reference sets for the mineral resources industry and will assist delineation of regional exploration targets.

Mine life cycle planning and enduring value are taking centre stage to meet corporate goals and deliver socio-economic outcomes for communities over the life of a mine. There is a general agreement in the literature about mining-induced effects on locals adjacent to mining operations and subsequent closure. In response, international regulatory bodies, through the implementation of global agendas, encourage exploration and mining companies to embrace the concept of corporate social responsibility. This concept is designed to provide sustainable outcomes and maintain a social license to operate over the life of a mine. This paper proposes a practical application of the sustainable livelihood approach as a tool for international planning. With this approach as the governing framework, this paper proposes an innovative tool for mine life cycle planning. Based on the findings, this paper discusses the socio-economic impacts of mining and mine closure. It also argues that transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities needs to be considered at the initial stages of planning for the mine and the community. Findings also indicate that conditions such as a strong local government, good governance arrangements, relevant capacity-building for sustainable livelihoods and a diversified economy are important to transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities. The paper is based on a mixed research technique for data analysis and a case study methodology. The new South Mine in the Western Deep Levels complex is destined to become an ultra deep project extending to depths of 4 200 m below surface and where rock temperatures are likely to exceed 65 ¦C. Initial estimates put refrigeration requirements at 133 000 kWR. A surface refrigeration plant with an initial capacity of 42 000 kWR has been commissioned and will be used for mining the upper levels.

A lead-zinc flotation tailings sample containing silver from BHP Billiton’s Cannington Mine has been characterised to understand occurrences of silver in the tailings by conventional elemental, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and size analyses followed by mineralogical analysis with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with mineral liberation analysis (MLA) software and the use of an adapted diagnostic leach process originally developed for gold containing materials.The tailings sample contained 67 g/t Ag, 1.8 per cent Pb and 0.52 per cent Zn. The XRD analysis showed that the sample consisted of 74 per cent silicates, nine per cent sulfides, 11 per cent magnetite and small amounts of other minerals such as fluorite, fluorapatite and rutile. The p80 and p50 of the sample were determined to be 106 µm and 38 µm, respectively. The silver distribution was high in the small size fraction with 52.1 per cent of the silver being in the -8 µm fraction. The silver minerals freibergite, acanthite, jamesonite, pyrargyrite and native silver were observed in the mineralogical analysis of the sample by SEM/MLA. The associations of the minerals were intricate and the occurrences of silver were complex. There were finely disseminated silver minerals and also coarser grains of silver minerals in composites with the host minerals. It was estimated that almost 50 per cent of the silver was contained in pyrargyrite, around 14 per cent as native silver and contained in acanthite, 12.5 per cent in galena and around ten per cent in freibergite and jamesonite.These composite particles and the type of the silver minerals present were expected to limit leaching efficiencies of the silver in hydrometallurgical processing. The diagnostic leach tests showed that around 50 per cent of the silver could be recovered by direct cyanidation and higher extractions could be achieved by more aggressive acidic systems.Cyanidation tests were conducted to confirm the findings of the diagnostic leach studies. The investigated cyanidation parameters were time (up to 48 hours), solid to liquid ratio (1:1 and 1:2), cyanide concentration (0.025 M, 0.5 M and 0.1 M) and particle size (p80 of 106 µm, 63 µm and 7.5 µm). The effects of oxygen and lead nitrate were also studied. The tests were conducted at atmospheric temperatures. The maximum silver recovery obtained was about 50 per cent for all the parameter ranges trialled except particle size. The decrease in particle size from 106 µm to 7.5 µm by fine grinding resulted in an increase in silver recoveries from 50 per cent up to approximately 82 per cent indicating that the liberation of the silver grains/minerals is one of the factors affecting the cyanidation recovery of silver in addition to the presence of refractory silver minerals not amenable to cyanidation.Low head grades of silver in the tailings and relatively low cyanidation recoveries of silver (without fine grinding) necessitate a thorough cost analysis for the cyanidation of the Cannington lead and zinc tailings to assess if cyanidation would be a suitable process option for the extraction of silver. Independent Project Analysis (IPA) is in the business of benchmarking the performance of capital projects on behalf of owner companies in the processing and extractive industries. IPA assesses between 500 and 800 projects each year. The projects are conducted globally and range in size from about $1 million to over $30 billion. Using the data, we are able to benchmark the performance of Australian projects against the rest of the world. This presentation focuses on the performance of large (greater than $100 million) projects that involve chemical or thermal processing.We regularly hear calls for more processing to be conducted in Australia but on the other hand industry leaders are concerned about the poor success rate of solids processing projects in Australia. Data gathered by IPA indicates that there is good reason for the concern. Out of a sample of 31 large processing projects conducted in Australia, 23, or 74 percent, were classed as failures. This performance is significantly worse than for similar projects in other parts of the world. The presentation analyses why the performance is worse and demonstrates that many of the reasons behind the failures were manageable by the project team. Furthermore, members of the project teams on at least half the failed projects knew that the projects were on a path to failure before the project was authorised but could not be heard.The presentation discusses how large projects that involve process design and, in many cases, new technology, need to be set up for success. *This is an abstract only. There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

Lode-gold systems are often characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect (>50 per cent), and the presence of coarse gold particles (>100 ¦m in size). They rank amongst the most difficult of ore deposits types, in terms of producing an accurate and precise resource estimate. Their effective sampling is generally difficult because of the relatively low concentrations involved and erratic nature of the gold particles. Grade continuity is usually less consistent than gross geological continuity, and is typified by the localisation of grades within discrete oreshoots. In most cases drilling, particularly diamond drilling is an effective measure of global geological continuity, whereas grade can only be reliably resolved from underground development. Depending upon drill density and geology, it is unlikely that anything above an Inferred Mineral Resource can be estimated from surface drilling alone. Underground development, in-fill drilling and, potentially, bulk sampling or trial mining will be required to delineate Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources and subsequent Ore Reserves. Grade estimation will have to account for highly skewed and often multi-modal populations, extreme values, a high nugget effect and low geostatistical ranges. A clear geological model that honours both geological and grade continuity must drive the resource estimation process.

In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

Australia's first offshsore well was spudded in on 27th December 1964 and resulted in the discovery of the Barracouta gas field. Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. The Snapper gas field was discovered in May, 1968 Information on exploration activities associated with the discovery of oil and gas in the Bass Strait area may be found in the paper, "Exploration in the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins, Australia" by B. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.

Geostatistical analysis, resource estimation and three-dimensional modelling of the gold grade distribution was undertaken using exploration drillhole data taken from the Mt Leyshon gold mine. The main aims of the project were to provide an independent estimate of the primary gold resource and to improve the estimate by better understanding the statistical distribution of gold and the establishment of more robust variograms. These criteria have been achieved by the removal of low grade sub-populations, increased sample size and access to data from the most recent drilling program. The outcome of this statistical study has led to a lowering of the sill and nugget variance of the variograms used. Distinct geometric anisotropy was identified in all the resource estimation zones and was used to model gold grade distribution.Two independent resource estimates were established from the primary gold resource, one based on a geostatistical estimator (kriging) and the other on a traditional estimator (inverse distance weighting). Both methods were compared with a contemporary kriged estimate by Mt Leyshon Gold Mines Ltd.

Blasting can impact the efficiency of entire downstream mining operation. Individual technology solutions for blasting have been available in the industry for many years but all of them only cater for certain aspects of blasting. Many of them are based on individual research and/or experiences. Some of the available software solutions are not suitable to be used in the field as that they need advanced skills or tools. Also, most do not take technology advancements like mobility, advanced data analytics, web solutions and integration into consideration. Hence, no technology platform is currently present in the industry that addresses all potential needs a blaster may need in an integrated manner.This paper presents an integrated solution that takes care of all aspects of blasting – design blasts according to mine plan; collect data after drilling has been carried out (as there is often difference in designed and actual drilled hole locations in the field); predict blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations, wave front reinforcement and flyrock distance; and after assessment, allows changes in charging, delay timing and sequence. The technology solution is a secure, cloud-hosted, web-based software-as-a-service solution that can be accessed from anywhere. Also it has a mobile app, which is available for both Android and iPhone/iPad. The mobile app is also integrated with the web-based solution using application programming interface calls to the central data repository.Case studies for two limestone mines are presented where this solution is being used in its initial format. This software platform enabled analysis of the outcome from a previous blast pattern and then subsequently allowed optimisation of blasting operations based on historical data. Uses of this platform have resulted in improved key performance indicators in these two limestone mines. The mobile app as part of this platform enables extensive field blast data capture and analysis and also various predictions before a blast. Data collected include blast parameters, individual hole charging, initiation pattern, videos, photographs and vibration records for analysis/reporting. The key features of the solution are a blast designer, a detailed blast data collection/analysis and a series of environmental predictors. These predictors give blast results in terms of fragmentation, flyrock, ground and air vibrations and wave front reinforcement and take remedial steps before blasting to optimise and control adverse environmental impact. The Wattle Dam gold mine, located near Kambalda in the Goldfi elds region of Western Australia has recently progressed to an underground operation and is now believed to be Australia's highest grade operating gold mine. At end of March 2010, the deposit had reserves of 132 000 t @ 20.8 g/t for 88 000 oz and by the end of June 2010 had produced 110 000 oz from open-pit and underground mining. The Wattle Dam main lode is characterised by very coarse gold mineralisation. Gold occurs as cm to decimetre fracture fi ll veinlets, shear surface coatings and erratic fl akey clusters. The gold has no quartz or silica association and lacks adjacent low-grade mineralisation or alteration assemblage. Geologically it appears atypical of Archaean lode gold deposits and may represent an extreme end member of the type. Definition of the lode is largely dependent on effective geological identification of the host lode zone and an understanding of the erratic distribution and grade behaviour of a high-nugget, coarse gold deposit. Dependence on assay data to defi ne the lode zone would result in the deposit being mined incorrectly and much of the deposit being left unexploited. This paper discusses the geology, coarse gold characteristics and defi nition methods which are used to successfully defi ne and mine the deposit.

The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

Preconcentration greatly reduces the ore mass input to the processing plant while upgrading the grade. One of the commonly used methods of preconcentration is optical sorting. These methods rely on optical sensors which classify the material stream into “accept-reject” streams. Currently, it is common to use near infrared (NIR) or colour cameras to classify streams based on reflectance or colour thresholds set by experts. The imaging is done through line-scan sensors where the material is scanned on a belt or a chute. Then, a separation apparatus like a diverter gate or air jet is controlled to separate the streams according to the classification made by the algorithm. Separation efficiency is dependent on the classification algorithm. Existing classification algorithms rely on low-level feature discrimination like observing individual pixel values for reflectance or colour hues. This limits discrimination between minerals with low contrast in colour. Human experts perform mineral segmentation using texture, colour distribution and shape, but it is difficult to translate these visual rules to mathematical thresholds. Deep learning methods like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) provide high-level feature discrimination similar to a human expert. Instead of relying on pre-defined features, the CNNs learn complex features from the dataset. CNNs can construct a hierarchy of features based on pixel clusters to learn texture, shapes, and colour spectrums of the mineral grain surface to provide better separation. In this study, a state-of-the-art deep learning instance segmentation method is used to outline boundaries and classify grains from the background (mineral segmentation). The algorithm is trained on images collected from a flotation feed of a gold deposit, where the gold is mechanically locked inside pyrite. This method can process on-line video inputs at 5 frames per second to provide a live grade. The proposed method is inexpensive as it only uses a camera and a desktop computer.

Assessment of the effect of alternative combinations on the key cost factors - output, capital, labour cost and construction time - allows the optimum choice for particular circumstances, there being no uniform solution.

The C.S.A. copper lead zinc mine, located seven miles north of Cobar in Central Western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral occurrence in the Cobar Mining Field. Hosted by the steeply west dipping, west facing sediments of the Cobar Group, the generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They comprise lenticular steeply north pitching and east dipping zones of sulphide mineralisation which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotite--galena to less massive pyrite- pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties. The thinly bedded siltstones, shales and graywackes hosting the mineralisation appear to have derived many of their constituents from volcanic sourcesä They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and super- imposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralisation. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distrib- ution of the orebodies and the appropriate fold axis appears to coincide with the long axis of the orebodies.

Site-based case studies (including data collected from industrial surveys) and their application in evaluating circuit performance, have a significant role in developing reliable process models. Such models are useful to both plant metallurgists and researchers. Appropriate process models enable the plant metallurgist to assess the impact of different operational parameters on the overall circuit performance. They also provide the researcher with a detailed understanding of process behaviour in response to changes in ore characteristics and process conditions (ie plant throughput, ore competence, ore type). Thus enabling the identification of effective operating factors, and allowing them to be ranked in order of their influence on the process response, which eventually develops into a process control tool in the hands of plant operators.The above approach has been developed and applied at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) separately for both comminution and flotation processes. In recent years, the JKMRC has attempted an integrated approach by developing process models that incorporate the impact of upstream processes on downstream processes. This is not possible using the traditional approach of separate comminution and flotation surveys, so conducting integrated plant surveys is crucial for success in developing integrated process models. This paper summarises industrial experience gained while conducting such an integrated plant survey at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining operation near Cloncurry in north Queensland. An appropriate approach should be taken to enable the alignment of different requirements from different processes during the plant survey. Spiral concentrators are used globally in the fine coal processing industry to segregate particles, by gravitation, on the basis of density and size. Consisting of an open trough that twists vertically downwards about a central axis, a slurry mix of particles and water is fed to the top of the concentrator. Particles are then separated radially as they gravitate downward. Since their introduction to Australia in the 1940's, the generic design has evolved largely by laboratory trial-and-error investigations of different prototypes. However, this approach has proven expensive and optimal designs have not been necessarily developed. Accordingly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis has been used recently as an alternative method of investigation, to assume as is envisaged, a role in the design process. To date, CFD models have progressed to simulations of turbulent fluid flow on current production spiral designs, and are continuing to be adapted for inclusion of particles at realistic feed concentrations. To be able to use the models confidently however, laboratory experiments must also be performed to validate the predictions during the development stage. This paper reports the current findings of an ongoing CFD and experimental program applied to one spiral unit. Satisfactory quantitative agreement has been achieved for the fluid and particulate flow characteristics, and although further validations are appropriate, the model already possesses significant potential for use as a reliable predictive design tool.

The large rotary blast hole drills for hole sizes of 250 to 375 mm in diameter have been utilized by large open pit metal and coal mines for production drilling all over the world. The design of such rotary drills is in most cases about two decades old and it has not been done much in order to apply a modern technology on rotary drilling. The most modern large rotary drill, Tamrock RI 10, consists of an advantageous rotary head with a squirrel cage AC motor controlled by a frequency converter, a beneficial mast structure with a possibility for inclined drilling, hydraulic driven, independent crawlers, and a modern ergonomic cabin to provide a comfortable working condition for the oper- ator. Several automatic features are available as options. The rig has been designed to be operated by one man only. With this modern rig the produc- tion rate can be increased and production cost kept on a low level.
