For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Owing to improvements in computer capacity, it is now possible to undertake fully coupled or partially coupled, three-dimensional (3D) hydromechanical Finite Element (FE) simulation of mines, including explicit representations of large numbers of discontinuities. The analysis requires fewer assumptions than uncoupled analysis or two-dimensional (2D) analysis, but may require a change in how hydrological data is collected. The way hydrological data is incorporated in stability assessment and the approach to uncertainty in hydrological information also requires discussion. The current procedures for this type of analysis are discussed, along with some practical difficulties and teachings from early applications. A work flow for integration of 3D hydromechanical modelling with pit planning and some considerations for the management of uncertain data are also proposed.

A variety of cement raw materials occur within the Cenozoic sequence in Northland. These form the basis of Golden Bay Cement's cement manufacturing operation at Portland, Whangarei. High grade limestone is taken from the Whangarei Limestone formation, which has been shown to have been sub-aerially weathered and developed mature karst features prior to deposition of the overlying allochthon sediments. In this instance, remobilisation of allochthon sediments following uplift and erosion is inferred. At Portland Quarry, argillaceous limestone is extracted from deformed thrust sheets in the allochthon sequence. Quarry operations have been designed to handle the steep asymmetric folds, thrust faults and fracture zones that affect the resource.

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

Australia has a long history of underground mining. Even withadvances in open cut mining equipment, techniques andeconomics, many orebodies are still best mined by undergroundmeans. In addition, modern exploration tools are æuncoveringÆorebodies that are at increasing depths. South African mines arecurrently producing from below 3 km, and developing down to5 km depths û it is likely that Australian mines will also becomemuch deeper over the next 20 years. One of the most significanttechnical challenges in deep mines is the problem of heat.Community expectations and legislated standards continue todrive operations towards improving the working conditions inmines. The hazards and costs associated with chronic hotworking conditions (heat illness, poor safety, poor productivity,higher operating costs and poor morale) are also becomingincreasingly recognised (Brake, Donoghue and Bates, 1998). Theexposure of miners to many other occupational hazards has beenreduced over the past 50 years. However, despite air-conditionedcabins greatly reducing the heat stress on mobile plant operators,there are still many Australian mine workers subject to levels ofthermal stress that existed a century ago. There are severalreasons for this, including a frequently-poor understanding of thephysiology of working in heat by mine management, no agreedmining code of practice for working in heat, the lack of a robust,practical-sized instrument to measure heat stress, the costpressures on the industry and, to some extent, deep-seatedtraditional management and worker practices. Howeversignificant progress has been made in many of these areas (Brakeand Bates, in press), with the net result that there is likely to be a trend towards installation of refrigeration of some form in manyAustralian mines in the future. This will add directly to the costof operation, but will also have direct and indirect benefits,including cost benefits. It should also be noted that Australia isnot at the forefront of adopting practices to manage temperaturesin the workplace: South African metal mines usually haverefrigerated cooling, and Canadian mines spend large sums onheating, with heating costs (averaged over a full year) of up to$A1 per tonne mined (Bandopadhyay et al, 1997). The history of mine refrigeration dates back to 1919 when thefirst plant was installed at Morro Velho, Brazil. By 1965, the totalinstalled capacity (worldwide) reached about 100 MW(R)i. Since 1965 the growth in mine refrigeration capacity has beenexponential, with a doubling every six or seven years (Howes andNixon, 1997). South Africa is by far the largest user of minerefrigeration, with over 300 refrigeration machines installed. This paper discusses the key design issues associated with theapplication of refrigeration in underground metal or coal mines.Whilst the emphasis is on large, surface plants, small, surface orunderground refrigeration plants can also be very effective in thecorrect application and many of the principles of design andoperation are the same.

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. The classification of Mineral Resource estimates for reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process. These statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource which must also take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation. Several authors, including Jackson et al (2003) and Dominy, Noppe and Annels (2004), have addressed methods of including consideration of geological data and its reliability into the classification process. Henry and Parker (2005) have discussed a quantitative measure for classification of Measured and Indicated Resources related to mine production parcels. These methods rely on the availability of sufficient information for the application of geostatistics, data evaluation techniques or repeated interpretation of data to provide an indication of confidence. They are suitable for very advanced projects. In 2005, using a modification of the financial audit æcontrol and quality criteriaÆ principles, then widely accepted within Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest), the principal author developed a scheme which categorised the classified resources into æcontrolÆ and æqualityÆ (or risk) categories. Control covers all aspects of the data collection, the geological interpretation, the data analysis and the modelling of tonnage and grade; it is also influenced by the documentation of the estimate. The quality criteria are a subjective measure of risk associated with the estimation of the resource and refer to the risk that the tonnage and grade are not realised and the consequences if decisions are made on the basis of these estimates. By evaluating the generally accepted level of risk attributed to these quality ratings by Competent Persons within Newcrest, a graphical representation of the confidence in the resource ounces was prepared for communication of the expected confidence in the resource statement.

Open pit mining has considerable damaging effects on the environment of the mining region. These harmful influences have to be controlled during mining operation until mine closure. Different sections of mined land, such as; pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined, have to be reclaimed through treatment of environmental pollution and implementation of a permanent post mining land use (PMLU) after mine closure. Implementation of a permanent optimal post mining land use (OPMLU) is one the most decisive criterion which effects on reclamation procedure, mine closure and their costs. Therefore to define ultimate pit limit (UPL), mine closure and reclamation costs should be entered in the calculation iterations same as the other variable costs of the projects. Estimation of closure and reclamation costs of a mining project is carried out based on the attained OPMLU and the specifications of the mine site. In this paper, a model is developed to provide OPMLU for pit area through fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM) technique. The model was implemented on a hypothetical copper mine in northwest of Iran as a case study. Lumber production was selected as OPMLU for the pit area. It is finally concluded that through the developed model, OPMLU for different sections of mined land in an open pit mine project is defined. Also closure and reclamation costs are estimated based on the defined OPMLU to achieve a more accurate UPL.

The Macraes Gold Mine has implemented a Zero Accident Programme and this paper reviews some of the factors responsible for the implementation.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

Triboelectric Separation - Beneficiation of Coal The performance of triboelectric separators is highly sensitive to the selectivity of the particle charging process. This paper presents a quantitative study on triboelectric coal beneficiation. The performance of different charging media was studied. Stainless steel was identified as having a work function between that of coal and silicate gangue and found to be the optimum charging medium for coal beneficiation. Recent results from separation tests were performed where silicate gangue was separated from crude coal using a parallel plate free-fall separator are illustrated.

A Peer Review Panel for the Golden Cross Mine in the upperWaitekauri Valley, Coromandel was initiated in December 1989, before mining, as a requirement of the conditions of the Mining Licence and Water Rights. The panel's function is as a technical audit and advisory team - to provide independent technical review of design, construction, and execution of mining operations, slope remediation works, and reclamation/mine closure activities. The primary role of the panel is to act in the public interest by providing assurance to regulating authorities that the design and application of on-site mining operations accords with 'good industry practice'. Panellists are not involved in design nor as advisers, although until 1997 when explicit terms of reference were written, the panellists were a sounding board for some operational proposals. The panel functions to ensure that best mining industry technical standards are met. The costs of the peer review process are met by the mining company. Review of mining operations includes environmental matters such as land rehabilitation and water quality. The focus of this paper is on the process of peer review for environmental management factors rather than for structural and mine engineering.

Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each 'gold type'. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

Mine planning includes equipment selection as a subprocess because aging equipment must be replaced to maintain or improve productivity levels. The criteria used for decision-making in mine planning and equipment selection are often inextricably linked and inherently contradictory. For example, financial wisdom demands that development, which is an expense and locks up capital, be deferred as far into the future as possible yet on the contrary technical knowledge suggests that developing well ahead of stoping is practically desirable because it generates additional geological information required to improve planning of the unmined portion of the orebody and create better operating flexibility. Consequently, mine planning professionals have to delicately balance all decision criteria when executing mine planning in order to achieve optimal mineral extraction or when selecting equipment, so that capital is optimally deployed. These two processes can therefore be characterised as belonging to the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type of problems. MCDA problems are alternatively referred to as multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) problems and belong to a broader group of problems called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). There is now a gradual recognition and application of MCDA techniques in the minerals industry. This paper explores the theory, current and potential application of these techniques in decision-making in the minerals industry.
