The total estimated production of coal in the United States during the first century and a quarter of mining is shown in Table 20. This is the total of the production of the various states already shown in the various tables, and is believed to be the first statement of this sort made. No such table prepared from limited data can be accurate, but it is the writer's opinion that the totals shown are less than those actually produced. It was thought that this study would enable a reasonably accurate account of the movement of coal down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to be written. The searches made have shown that at this time the data do not exist from which such a study can be made, but some of the facts collected may be useful to future students.

With stepped-up work in rock mechanics, more and more data on strength and elastic properties of rocks has become available. Results of measurements of tensile strength, in addition to determinations of compressive strength, allow us to deter- mine, even if only in an approximate way, the third property influencing failure of a brittle material: shear strength. It is fairly generally agreed upon in rock mechanics, in drilling and blasting research, that Mohr's theory provides an acceptable method for explaining the failure of a brittle material. Mohr states that a material may fail either 1) through plastic slip when shearing stress Y in the planes of slips has reached a limiting value (which in general depends on the normal stress, X, acting normal to the surface), or 2) when the largest normal tensile stress has reached a limiting value. The mode of failure depends upon which of the two stresses is the smaller.

Introduction. THE New London copper mine, about 81, miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the Writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described y Graton1 and Laney2, except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly-the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral.

The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

RECENT interest has been shown in utilizing solid-state techniques for obtaining large oriented grains in the Alnico Alloys.1-4 Unfortunately, due to the inherent brittleness of these materials it is difficult to introduce sufficient imperfections by deformation to support the nucleation and growth of new, recrystallized grains. As a result, recrystal-lization methods for obtaining large grains, such as the strain-anneal technique, do not appear to be feasible. Steinort et a1.2 used a combination of a thermal gradient and internal strains to obtain large single crystals of Alnico 5 from a poly crystalline casting by annealing at temperatures above 1200°C. It was suggested that the strains were the result of the precipitation of the y phase which exists between -850° and 1200°C. At Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse limerock. While oversize material was crushed through Y4-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity.

(written discussion?).-To many members of the Institute, papers like this one by Prof. Jeffries, and that on "Reversal of Inheritance" by Prof. Howe, may seem highly academic. Aside from their direct application to all heat-treating processes, to my mind, the establishment of a physical fact and the correlation of facts into a definite law are in themselves ample justification for immense effort. A law, once established, cannot be ignored by those who carry the work along to practical ends. In studying both papers, it seems to me that each author is more concerned with defending a theory than with explaining the individual results as published by various investigators. Take, for example, my sample of pressed electrolytic iron, frequently referred to by both. Prof. Howe, defending inheritance, says that the grains on the second (1300° C.) heating inherited their size from the mother austenite. Prof. Jeffries, defending reversed inheritance, elabor-.

In high-volume mining operations, preventive maintenance programs that include standardized replacement wear parts can boost equipment availability and lower unit costs. Meeting the daily production targets depends heavily on keeping equipment working as close to full time as possible. This is the case at one medium-sized western surface coal operation producing approximately 2.7 million t/y (3 million stpy). The mine, located in western Wyoming, removes in excess of 8 million m3 (10.5 million cu yd) of highly abrasive overburden each year. According to the mine superintendent, "Abrasion at this mine is some of the worst I've ever seen. Shovel points can wear out in little more than one shift. Dozer blades some- times last two weeks, but can wear out sooner. And ripper points really take a beating. If we can replace this fast-wearing iron with small pieces that go on quickly, we think that's the way to go."

Approximately 100 million mt of magnetic reject tailings, which contain apatite and about 1% yttrium and rare-earth elements, exist in the eastern U.S. as a result of iron ore mining operations. At the present time, no economic process is available for recovering yttrium from this material. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem to determine if an effective low-cost method could be found, thereby increasing our domestic yttrium reserves. [Fig. 1] is a line drawing of a photograph taken during microprobe analysis of a sample of the tailings, and shows the distribution of yttrium. Typical analysis of this material is 0.14% yttrium and 1.1% rare-earth elements (mainly lanthanum through neodymium). Over half of the yttrium is present as a hydrated Ca-Y silicate deposited along interfaces in the grain structure; whereas, the remainder of the rare-earth elements occur as Ca-Fe-RE silicates. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand by consumers for uniformity of ground talc, a new method of blending its finished product has been developed by Gouverneur Talc Company, Inc., at its plant near Gouverneur, N. Y. The method has been in use for a sufficient length of time to be now judged a success. The Gouverneur district is the leading talc producing area of the world, inasmuch as more tonnage is produced there than from any other state in the U.S. or, so far as is known, from any other locality in the world. Almost all of the output goes into industrial uses, with ceramics and paint being the principal consuming industries. The physical and chemical specifications imposed by these industries are stringent and the trend, as in most industries, is toward ever increasing severity. The blending method described herein has aided Gouverneur Talc to keep up with this trend.

THE phase diagram of the Ge-Te system was first investigated by Klemm and Frischmuth.' They arrived at the phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicating the presence of a peritectic phase boundary at the 50 at. pct Ge composition. Later, Schubert and Fricke2 obtained data which suggested to them the possible existence of a eutectic at about 55 at. pct Ge. In order to resolve these differences, we have carefully studied this system in the region 40 to 60 at. pct Ge using both the conventional thermal analysis technique and a new solidification technique.3y4 The alloys were prepared from semiconductor grade germanium and 99.999+ Te by reacting the elements in evacuated, graphite coated, vycor tubes. The samples were placed in a thermal analysis apparatus described elsewhere4 and cooling curves were taken of each alloy to determine the liquidus surface. Fassell (University of Utah, Salt Lake City)—The authors of this paper should be complimented on the experimental techniques they have employed to investigate the rate of solution of galena in sodium hydroxide solution. Studies of this type are important not only as a practical means of leaching normally non-leachable substances, but also to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface. There is some question, however, as to the conclusions which have been drawn by these authors concerning their proposed mechanism. Unfortunately, the contribution of OH- was not definitely established in their work, and concentrations less than 0.5 N NaOH evidently were not investigated. The pressure data at 123°C and 0.5 N NaOH were used to determine pressure dependency and the subsequent model proposed was taken as correct on the basis of the three points presented in Fig. 5 of the paper. This study identifies and describes various crystalline phases of the V205-Na20 system, and relates their properties to metallurgical aspects of vanadium production. Phase equilibria and stability ranges of sodium vanadate phases of varying molar ratios of Na20/V205 were investigated in a variety of plant products, ranging from fused "black cakes" (V20 melts) to "salt roast" calcines. Crystalline compounds, Including vanadium pentoxide, V205; sodium vanadyl vanadate, 6 phase, Na2O.V2O5.5V2O5; sodium vanadyl vanadate, y phase, 5Na20.V204.12V205; sodium metavanadate, Na20 .V 05; sodium pyrovanadate , 2Na20 .V205; and sodium orthovanadate, 4Na20.~2~5, have been characterized with the aid of X-ray diffraction patterns, infrared spectra, and optical properties in addition to chemical analyses, as a guide to mineralogical "troubleshooting" of plant problems and processes in vanadium pyro- and hydrometallurgy.

W. L. Saunders, New York, N. Y.:—Mr. Parker's paper, though entitled Conservation of Coal, might also be called the Conservation of Life in the Coal-Mines of the United States. No subject is of greater importance to mining-men at the present time than information from experts as to how to save coal and how to save human lives in mines. That the casualties in the coal-mines should exceed 3,000 in the year 1907 is simply appalling, and that 1,000 men should have been killed in a single year through explosions alone, and that so good an authority as Mr. Parker should say that " a prolific cause " is an "improperly-prepared blast" or "the failure on the part of the miner to undercut his coal," points to the importance of activity not only among mining engineers but also, through experts, by the legislatures of the respective States. Tensile properties of annealed molybdenum were investigated from 1000" to—200°C. In the vicinity of room temperature a well-defined transition in tensile properties occurs. Reduction in area decreases from over 80 pct to 0 pct and, simultaneously, the yield strength increases about 60,000 psi. MOLYBDENUM, tungsten, iron, and many other metals and alloys with the body-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal structures change from ductile to brittle behavior over some relatively narrow temperature range. The temperature at which this transition in ductility occurs depends on chemical composition, microstructure, and method of testing. When fine grained, completely recrystallized molybdenum of commercial purity is tested in uniaxial tension at a slow strain rate, the transition occurs at slightly below room temperature.' Iron2 and tungsten3 tested under similar conditions become brittle at temperatures close to the boiling point of nitrogen, — 195°C and at about 200°C, respectively. A sharp change in ductility is uncommon in metals with the face-centered cubic crystal structure, however, a relatively sharp transi- tion in notched bar impact properties has been observed below room temperature in a face-centered cubic copper-antimony alloy.4 A transition from ductile to brittle behavior is usually explained by the concepts originally developed by Ludwik,5 and discussed and elaborated on by others including Orowan,6 Hollomon and Jaffe,7 and Gensamer8 In brief, there are two aspects to strength, first the resistance to flow and second the resistance to fracture. Both are functions of temperature, strain, strain rate, stress system, composition, and microstructure. With decreased test temperature the flow stress required to initiate plastic deformation increases more rapidly than the fracture strength and brittle fracture occurs at that temperature where the yield strength equals or exceeds a brittle fracture strength. This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of temperature, strain, and rate of straining on the flow and fracture strengths of molybdenum above, through, and below the ductile-to-brittle transition. The work was done by the library force of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and brings up to Dec. 23, 1915; a bibliography issued by the American Society of Civil Engineers on May 15, 1912. The Bibliography has been printed -and issued by the American Electric Railway Association, 8 West 40th Street, New York, N. Y., and may be obtained from its Secretary on the payment of 50 c. References are arranged under the following headings: General, Electric Light and Power, Gas Works, Mining, Railroads, Steam Power, Street and Inter-urban Railways, Telegraph and Telephone., Water Power, Water Works. References are given to the principal technical publications, to various works on the question, of valuation, to rules and regulations of Commissions and other official bodies, and to the proceedings of various societies. Undoubtedly the compilation is the most comprehensive that has yet been published.

(written discussion?).-On page 2680, under the heading Junction Box and Zone Box, the authors say, with reference to the zone-box principle of connections between primary couple, compensator couple, and copper leads, which method in its appli-cation to a single couple is shown in Fig. 34, that if this principle is adopted for a multiple installation, so as to save compensating leads; a selective switch may be (and the inference is that it must be) inserted between the zone box and the different couples, putting the switch at an inconvenient point, or putting up with some complicated interlacing of connections.. Wilson-Maeulen Co. has employed the zone-box method extensively for several years and in none of the many multiple installa-tions has either of those alternatives been resorted to.
