A CERTAIN amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautman1 published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table 1. THE following statement is contained in an article entitled "Mortgaging the Future." by Walter C. Teagle, president of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jer-sey, appearing in the current issue of the Lamp, the official organ of the Standard Oil Co.: "During the last eight months the domestic daily production. of crude oil has risen 300,000 bbl.. which means that no less a volume than 2,500,000 bbl. now are coming to market each day. . . . Every twenty-four hours 250,000 bbl. more than the consumer required are being added to our surplus oil storage. The temporary advantage of cheap petroleum products and the availability of fuel .oil, for a widespread use as a substitute for coal are not being weighed against the time when scarcity may follow on the heels of plenty and the public of tomor-row may have to pay for today's excesses. The over-production of crude and its consequences constitute a problem of national import which far outweighs the temporary advantages either to a part of the industry or to sections of the public.

Measurements have been made of the rate of capture of single particles of strongly hydrophobic, surface-methylated, quartz, of sizes ranging from 12 to 40 µm diam., by single rising bubbles of diam. 0.5 to 1.1mm. The results agree closely with the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic collision rates, indicating that, in this system, every collision results in capture and retention of a particle.

Forecasts of future timber consumption in soft-coal mining are handicapped by the lack of adequate experience records for estimating properly the timber requirements of the industry. Data were obtained from plants where records are kept or from operators who collected the information and to these were added composite figures for the continental United States in 1905 and 19191 and for central and western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928,000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross ban used per ton of coal mined and the percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. At the meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, Va., in June, 1883, I gave some facts in relation to charcoal pig iron of unusual strength, made from our carbonate ore taken from the mine at Amenia, N. Y. My object in again bringing the subject to the attention of the Institute, is to obtain, if possible, the solution of a prohlem in connection therewith. Our furnace is of the old type, stone stack 32 feet high by 9 feet 2 inches at top of bosh; bosh about 67O pitch; stone hearth; three tuyeres of 31/4-inch opening; fuel, a mixture of hard and soft coal; blast about & to # pound pressure, and heated to 400' to 600° Fahr. by iron pipe oven on top of stack. The analysis of the roasted carbonate ore, as before given to the Institute, is as follows:

The effects of reactor irradiation on age hardening in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy have been investigated in two neutron-energy ranges. During some of the irradiations, specimens were exposed to high-energy fission neutrons which passed through a boron-10 shield; during other bombardments, the boron-10 was omitted and specimens were irradiated in a reactor thermal column, or the fuel configuration was modified to increase the thermal-neutron flux at a location in the core. Differences in length, X-ray diffraction angle, and hardness indicated that low-energy neutron irradiation made a small contribution to changes in the measured properties. The influence of defects generated by knock-om with less than the Brinkman critical energy or by prompt (n,y) recoil is suggested as the cause of this effect. EXPERIMENTS designed to test the effects of reactor irradiation on the properties of age-hardening alloys have to the present time employed fluxes un-differentiated according to neutron energy. Billing-ton and Siegell in 1950 were the first to perform such an experiment and to compare the results with those obtained by thermal aging. These authors concluded that precipitation in a Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy was not enhanced by the radiation. However, 4 years later, Murray and Taylor,2 working with specimens of the same Cu-2 wt pct Be alloy, reported that an increase in density, hardness, and resistivity which followed reactor irradiation resembled changes associated with thermal aging at about 100°C. (It should be noted that these authors reported that higher aging temperatures caused a decrease in resistivity.) cupp3 reported hardness results similar to those of Murray and Taylor. Koppenaal4 showed that irradiation-enhanced precipitation and irradiation defect hardening were not simply additive but that they acted separately in an irradiated alloy. Kernohan et a1.,5 working with Ni-Be, offered evidence that beryllium was removed from solid solution by reactor irradiation and suggested that the mechanism was one of increased diffusion through the use of vacancies in the structure. piercy6 also found that more precipitate particles were formed by fission-neutron irradiation of a Cu-Co alloy which contained a small amount of particles before irradiation. He proposed that the additional particles were caused by an appreciable amount of diffusion during the final cooling of displacement spikes. The retrogression of extant precipitate particles found by Murray and Taylor2 and Boltax7 as well as piercy6 indicated that nuclei were dissolved within a high-energy spike region and, upon resolidification of the perturbed volume, new nuclei precipitate and grow by enhanced diffusion. Bleiberg et al.' and Konobeevski et al.' explained phase changes obtained by irradiating fissionable alloys in terms of retrogression and re-precipitation in regions of high-energy spikes. Parsons and Balluffi10 used electron microscopy to verify that crystallization did indeed occur in displacement spikes which were formed in amorphous germanium by fast-neutron irradiation. The concept that low-energy neutron irradiation might cause structure-sensitive property changes in semiconductors by atomic recoil associated with the (n, y) reaction was first proposed by Schweinler" and walker." This thesis was tested by Cleland and crawford" and found to be valid. Coltman et al.14 exposed a variety of pure metals to thermal-neutron irradiation at cryogenic temperatures and attributed the resulting resistivity changes to the action of defects created by (n, y) recoil. The present work was undertaken to extend the concepts of Schweinler," walker," and Coltman et al.I4 to the case of an age-hardening alloy and to determine whether or not the action of defects produced by thermal-neutron irradiation would en-hance age hardening. The course of the transformations on cooling in a series of Cu-A1 alloys has been followed by means of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical metallogrAphy. Specimen size was found to have a pronounced effect on the time of completion of the pearlite transformation due to modification in the unmber of nuclei. The ordeving transformation zvas observed for all cooling rates for all alloys studied, and is considered insuppvessible. At intermediate cooling' rates, a transitional struchire for 011 alloy compositions and based ox the bainite reaction was observed. The alloys of aluminum and copper possess a eu-tectoidal region at from about 9.4 to 16 pct Al. Above the critical temperature, the disordered bcc phase, 0, is stable. At subcritical temperatures, the 0 phase decomposes under equilibrium conditions into the stable phases, a and y,. At the eutectoid composition, these phases develop a lamellar pearlite structure, in appearance much like that found in steels. During rapid quenching from supercritical temperatures, the diffusion processes required for the formation of the equilibrium phases are suppressed, and the 0 transforms to an acicular martensitic phase, designated B or y' depending on the aluminum content, or to a mixture of the two. Early investigators of this system concentrated on determining the equilibrium phase diagram, ''' the structure of the equilibrium phases,3 and later the isothermal decomposition of the 0 phase at subcritical temperatures, or the decomposition of the martensite on tempering. Other work which treated the nonequilibrium transformations concentrated largely on the martensite transformations and the structure of the b and y' phases.15"17 Since the pearlite and martensite transformations in this system resemble those in steels, the one being formed by nucleation and growth of adjacent lamellae of the equilibrium phases, and the other by a diffusionless, shear-type transformation, the present study has been undertaken to investigate the structures formed on continuous cooling, with the objective of constructing cooling transformation diagrams analogous to those derived for alloy steel systems. In particular it was desired to determine whether parallels between the A1-Cu and iron-iron carbide systems on continuous cooling extended to encompass the intermediate phase, namely the bainite structures, which form by a combined martensitic-diffusion mechanism,'' but which are supersaturated with respect to the equilibrium phase upon which their crystal structure is based. To this end the transformations in representative alloys of the Cu-A1 B eutectoid system have been followed, using the methods of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The materials tested were those used by Klier and Grmko 5 in their study of the isothermal decomposition of these alloys. The alloys were melted in graphite crucibles and chill-cast into 5 by 2 by 1/4 in. ingots. The ingots were then hot-rolled to sheets 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 in. thick. The compositions are given in Table I. Specimen Preparation. Specimens for thermal analysis were in the form of small squares approximately 1/4 in. on a side. For the 11.9 and 13.5 Al-Cu alloys, the sheet thickness was 1/16 in. and for the 10.5 A1-Cu alloy the 1/32-in. sheet was used. One lead of a chromel-alumel thermocouple was spot-welded to either face of the square with the specimen itself thus forming the hot junction of the thermocouple. Specimens for X-ray analysis were prepared as filings from martensitic sheet stock and were sealed in glass ampoules under 1/2 atm of argon. The manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In certain respects they have a strong resemblance to those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia, but in this paper no careful comparison with them can be made. Viewed from the present condition of the manganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments. Youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide in the rocks of both groups. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate degree of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows, largely of basic types. This has been named the Birrim System. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. Since these non-fossiliferous strata at many plaees are of a character which in many parts of the world are suitable for the preservation of fossils, and which contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim System have normally a northeast-southwest strike, and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed diagonally across their strike for upwards of 600 miles, to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much farther into French territory.

The visitors to the October meeting will be given opportunity to visit the coal fields in Illinois, adjacent to St. Louis, the steam-shovel operations near Pittsburgh, Kan., and the Oklahoma oil fields. The coal mines of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas furnish fuel over all of the central region of the country. Especially at this time, this district is of importance because of the necessity of producing enormous quantities to meet the country's demand. Some of the mines produce as much as 5,500 tons in 8 hr., and. the total output of Illinois, alone, in 1916, was 63,000,000 tons. Visitors may see elaborate underground electric tram systems, large underground machine repair shops, surface plants equipped for rapid loading, and some of the most modern coal-washing installations. The conditions for mining here are somewhat simpler than in the east.

THE viscosity of the oil in the reservoir is one of the properties that influence its movement through the sand to producing wells. Measurements of viscosity, therefore, are pertinent to problems associated with well behavior and with the estimation of recoveries, and afford an indirect means for partial evaluation of various methods of controlling reservoir behavior. The effect of dissolved gases on the viscosity of crude oil has been determined,1,2 but no data have been published on the viscosity of repre-sentative samples of reservoir oils. This paper describes a simple instrument that has been used to determine the viscosities of a number of subsurface oil samples at the temperatures and pressures existing in the reservoirs, and presents the results of the determinations for typical fields.

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone, such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

MUCH has been published on highly technical phases of grinding. Very little has been written on how a mill man can improve his operations by determining the optimum size assortment of grinding balls that should be added as a makeup charge. This ball rationing is not to be confused with the ball ration used as an initial charge when the mill is started up. Ball rationing is considered for one or more of the following purposes: 1) to increase throughput of the mill, 2) to reduce the power required per ton of ore ground to the desired size, 3) to reduce steel consumption per ton of ore ground, 4) to improve product size, and 5) to lower retention time of ore in the mill.
