Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated.

THE system Ti-CI- has been studied by several investigators." ' Though titanium and chromium are completely miscible at high temperatures, an intermediate phase of the approximate atomic proportions TiCr, has been identified at various compositions between 60 and 68 wt pct Cr. The structure of this phase was established as the cubic C15 (MgCu2) type with 24 atoms per unit cell and a lattice parameter 6.929 kX.2 During a study of the ternary system, Ti-Mo-Cr,5 the existence of a high temperature modification of the TiCr, phase was discovered. In a series of alloys annealed at 1300°C and containing from 60 to 70 wt pct Cr and 5 pct Mo, a new phase was present which did not correspond to either ß solid solution or TiCr,. By trial, the new phase was identified to be of the hexagonal C14 (MgZn2) structure with 12 atoms per unit cell. Further work showed that the hexagonal structure was. in fact, also present in binary Ti-Cr alloys quenched from high temperatures. To make the identification more certain, the intensities of the various reflections were calculated assuming a composition TiCr2 and C14 structure. Table I lists reflection planes, interplanar distances, calculated intensities, and a comparison of these values with the lines of a binary Ti-Cr alloy (66 pct Cr) annealed for 20 min at 1385°C and water quenched. Since high angle lines were more diffuse, the correspondence between visually observed and calculated intensities was not as good at these angles. Lattice parameters were computed to be a = 4.922 kX, c = 7.945, c/a :- 1.614. The corresponding interatomic distances are: titanium to titanium distance, 3.00:, kx, chromium to chromium distance, 2.43, kX, titanium to chromium distance, 2.88,, kX. These compare to 3.00, 2.45, and 2.87 kX in the cubic phase, respectively.' The atomic positions in the C14 structure are as follows: Titanium 1/3, 2/3, Z; 1/3, 2/3, 1/2: 2/3, 1/3, i; 2/3, 1/3, (1/2-z); Chromium 0, 0, 0: 0, 0, 1/2; 2x, 2, 1/4; 232, x, %; X, 22, 1/4; X, 2x, 3/4; x. x, 1/4; x, x, 3/4; The values of x and z were calculated for the alloy mentioned and found as follows: z — 0.061, x = 0.165. The values assumed in the intensity calculations were those for an ideal close-packed lattice or z = 1/16, x = 1/6. Work in the Ti-Mo-Cr system indicates that y2 the hexagonal modification of TiCr2, is the stable phase above 1300°C, while y1 with the cubic structure is stable below 1000°C. X-ray examination of a number of alloys annealed at intermediate temperatures showed that the hexagonal and cubic phases can coexist. Alloys quenched from 1000°C and annealed at 1100" and 1200°C showed small amounts of y2 at the higher temperature. A considerable amount of y, seemed present, however, in cast alloys annealed at 1100°C. It further appears that there is a small but definite solubility range for both phases in the ternary system. RECENTLY one of the Welsh coal companies, which has an excellent plant of up-to-date ma-chinery both on the surface and underground, operated under modern methods, sent one of its engi-neers to the United States to study actual operations in the mines. He visited several of the most important and best conducted collieries, went back, and reported that the greatest difference between operations in England and in the United States was. the closer con-tact between management and workmen. By manage-ment he meant management all the way through; close cooperation between office management, superintend-ents, foremen, shift-bosses, etc., and the workmen. A visit to some of the coal mines in that country by the writer made this fact rather impressive. The feel-ing on this side of the water that the methods in use in the coal mines in England are not up-to-date was found in many cases to be quite erroneous. Many mines, particularly those with very thin beds, in which profitable operations are doubtful under the best con-ditions, have necessarily had to adhere to old methods instead of making mechanical improvements. The Powell-Duffryn mines, in the center of the South Wales district, are certainly operating successfully, and have planned their business excellently. Sufficient areas of contiguous land have been leased for extended opera-tions. Mine plants are laid out in the valley, for work-ings on both sides, on a reasonable tonnage of 1500 to 3000 tons to each operation. The beds are from 30 to 48 in. thickness, and a 3-ft. seam is considered an ex-cellent thickness of coal; in fact, the miners prefer to work on the thinner beds rather than the thick ones, where they consider it more difficult to control the backs. This company is making use of its fine coal for produc-ing electric power, which is distributed to its own operations, and for use in the communities adjoining. For this purpose methods of cleaning the fine coal are being put into use. Compressed air is generated at the central power plant and is transmitted over long dis-tances to various mines in each valley. A byproduct coke plant uses more of the fine coal and gives further returns from non-commercial coal. The long-wall system applied in sections of limited size is popular in working the small seams, and me-chanical cutting is used, also handling either by shaking chutes or belt conveyors, or a combination of both. In some mines mechanical cutting is not necessary. The backs are so handled that in the softer or somewhat crushed seams hand cutting can be carried on effec-tively.

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Since (z - z1.v) = rll.ei, we note that the potential + has the proper logarithmic behavior near the two wells, while the stream function $ varies with the angle, decreasing clockwise around the production well and increasing clockwise around the injection well. The functions K(m) and K'(tn), related by K(m) = K'(m,), where m + m, = 1, are known as the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. By use of other properties of the Jacobian elliptic functions, the general stream function distribution for the staggered line drive can be obtained from Eq. 1: From the Jacobian elliptic function values, sn(0lm) = 0 dn(O(m) = cn(0jm) = 1, and f[K'(m)Iml = 03, it follows that the stream function given by Eq. 2 satisfies the proper symmetry conditions near a production well P located at [K(m), 01 and an injection well I located at [0, K' (m)]. That is, the line IOP in Fig. 1 is a streamline with value G (0. 0) = -0. and the straight lines connecting I and P to the point [K(m), K' (m)] is a streamline of value $[K(m), K' (m)] = -7/2. Similar symmetry conditions are obtained near other wells. It should be nuled that for m = m1, = 0.5, Eq. 2 reduces to the stream function distribution of the regular five-spot given in Ref. 7. SHAPE OF THE BREAKTHROUGH STREAMLINE It is apparent, from symmetry considerations, that the breakthrough streamline ($,) passes through the point [K(m)/2, K' (m)/2]. Its value there is so that the shape of the breakthrough streamline $,, is given by

TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

The equilibrium constants developed by Souders, Selheimer and Brown1' have been very useful tools in predicting vapor-liquid equilibria during the past five years. Their equilibrium constants were computed by assuming ideal solutions and recognizing the deviations of vapors from ideal gas laws. The same fundamental concepts were used by Lewis and co-workers8 for predicting vaporization phenomena by means of fugacities. The equilibrium constant is defined by equation 1: y\x =K [1] in which K = equilibrium constant, y = mol fraction of a constituent in the vapor phase, x = mol fraction of the constituent in the equilibrium liquid phase. The equilibrium constants are a function of temperature and pressure and might be considered as replacing the ratio of the vapor pressure to the total pressure of Raoult's law. They may be used to compute the vapor or saturation pressure of a liquid or the dew point of a vapor for any pressure or temperature from the analysis of the mixture much as Raoult's law is used. Likewise, the quantity of a mixture that will vaporize at any equilibrium temperature and pressure and the composition of the vapor and liquid may be calculated. The purpose of this paper is to review the available equilibrium data of interest in petroleum production, to discuss the auxiliary physical properties of the hydrocarbons, and to present typical uses of the equilibrium constants. The particular applications chosen are the computation of the results of stage separation of crude oil and natural gas, the calcula: tion of a pressure-volume curve of a crude oil-natural gas mixture, and information gleaned from a consideration of reservoir equilibria.

At a large meeting of the members of the American Fund for French Wounded it which Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt presided and at which Mrs. B. Girault Lathrop, President of the Paris Administration A. F.F. W., gave a most interesting address, special rows of seats were reserved for the members of the W. A. A. I. M. E. Those who were unable to be present will be glad to hear that Mrs. Lathrop complimented our organization on having supplied the largest dispensary operated by the A. F. F. W. and the Red Cross in northern France. The A. F. F. W. is going to erect an American Memorial Hospital at Rheims and it is hoped that the one hundred beds in the hospital will be endowed in memory of the men who gave their lives for the liberty of the world. It will be possible not only to endow beds, for which sums of $6000 each are needed, but also to give, as. memorials, sun- parlors at a cost of $10,000 each, two roof gardens at $5000 each, a laundry at $10,000 and a garage at $10,000. The New York Section has undertaken to endow a heel in memory of members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the Great War. Perhaps other Sections or groups of Sections may wish to do the same thing, or if no other Section cares to assume so much responsibility possibly individuals may like to join the fund already growing in New York, in which case they should send their contributions to Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt, 1 Lexington Ave., New York, N. Y.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9, A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special, attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that, the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library y forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified; indexed, and made availableto other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either y purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

THE principal purposes of library-catalogs are to enable a reader to find a book of which the author, the title, or the subject is known; to show what the library has. by a given author, or on a given subject; and to assist in the choice of a book, as to its edition, or as to its character. The author, in a narrow sense, is the person who writes a book; in a wider sense it is applied to him who is the cause of the book's existence, e.g., editor, translator, compiler, etc. Bodies of men, societies, and countries are, from a cataloging point of view, con¬sidered the authors of their official publications, memoirs, transactions, etc. All names selected as author names are arranged in strict alphabetical order. A subject catalog fulfills its purpose by entering or registering each book under the name of that subject or topic of which the book chiefly treats. It may or may not be alphabetical in arrangement. If the arrangement is not alphabetical, the catalog is commonly called a classed subject catalog, although this name might with equal propriety be applied to some alphabetical arrangements.

Although thousands of tons of stainless steel have been used successfully for many types of equipment, there have been few cases of failures due to the phenomenon described as stress corrosion cracking. During the past seven years only six cases of such failures have been drawn to our attention and investigated in the Research Laboratories with which the author is associated. These failures oc¬curred in two coffee urns, two wool con¬ditioning units, one dyeing machine, and another in a part of a steam-jacketed stock pot. In each case the equipment failed in a comparatively short time after exposure to conditions of high humidity at tempera¬tures in the range of 100 to 200 F. The failures in all cases were characterized by general embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel, with only slight indications of general corrosion except at the cracks. The first failure of this type was a coffee urn returned for investigation in 1937. The top and bottom sections showed a general corrosive attack and embrittlement and cracking of the stainless steel. The chemical analyses of these sections were as follows:

THE experiments described below are a continuation of work on the graphitization of cast iron conducted as part of the program of funda-mental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. In previous work it was found that melting in hydrogen increased the amount of eutectic and in others i produced al marked changes in the size of the graphite flakes. These effects seemed to be III sulphur and manganese present in the material studied. THE great outspread of the coal measures over portions of thirty-one of the sixty-seven counties Of Pennsylvania, and the large number of workable seams comprising the coal series, together with some workable seams lately shown to belong to the (so-called) barren measures, create the impression that these fields contain a practically inexhaustible supply of fuel, and those who have estimated or attempted to estimate their available tonnage have generally promulgated this view. But the actual total contents of this coal-field is of no importance to us at present; calculations including all seams, whether thick enough to mine or not, whether pure enough to furnish a marketable fuel or not, whether accessible at reasonable depth or not, are of no practical value. As coal producers, we are interested not in the total contents, but in the total amount of easily accessible coal of good quality con-tained in beds thick enough for remunerative mining. The estimates contained in this paper refer exclusively to workable and accessible coal of commercial value, we may call it "available" coral. In my paper on "The Consumption of Fuel in the Taylor Gas-Producer Plants at the Aspen and Marsac Mills" (Trans., xxiii., 134), I mentioned that in the plant which I had designed for the Ontario mill, the gas-tubes were to be covered with thin, corrugated sheet-iron, over which a coating of asbestos-magnesia would be spread in order to effect a good insulation and keep the gas as hot as possible. At the Ontario mill, two Stetefeldt furnaces and two revolving driers are fired with gas. One furnace is connected with a Taylor producer of 5 feet diameter, and the other furnace and the two driers are heated by the gas from a Taylor producer of 7 feet diameter. In the latter case the gas-tubes are necessarily somewhat long, and the cleaning of them takes time. In order to prevent overheating of the tubes during that operation, it has been found advantageous not to provide them with an insulating covering. If a tube becomes red-hot at any place by the burning of soot, this is at once observed, and the tube is closed until it cools down. The tubes con-

TEMPERATURE measurement in wells is an old practice and geothermal gradients have been of interest to geologists for many years.1,2 Their application to the operation of oil wells is a more recent practice. It has long been recognized that temperature anomalies occur in drilling and producing wells but thermometers that could obtain a satisfactory record of the anomalies were not available.3 The normal geothermal gradient is con-sidered as being about one degree Fahren-heit for each 60 ft. of depth.4 This "nor-mal" gradient varies in different areas, but whatever it may be in an area there is little variation from the surface to as deep as the drill penetrates. The normal gradient is appreciably changed by gas expanding from the reservoir into the borehole or by the movement of fluid through a borehole while drilling, producing, or circulating. It is the resulting anomalies and abnormal gradients from which conditions in wells can be interpreted. Some of the applications of such interpretations are locating the position of oil or gas sands, permeable strata in a reservoir zone, gas-oil contact, source of water, casing leaks, and the top of cement behind casing.
