The pyrite smelting process in which about half amount of sulfur is recovered from pyrite by thermal decomposition in an oxygen-free high-temperature combustion gas flow in the flash smelting furnace is being conducted at Kokkola Works in Finland. A mathematical model of this process was developed, and the rates of thermal decomposition and fusion of suspended sulfide particles in the reaction shaft of furnace was calculated. This model is thought to be appropriate because of a fairly good coincidence of the calculated length of reaction zone with the shaft height of the furnace at Kokkola Works. The calculated reaction zone in which the thermal decomposition and fusion of sulfide particles occur becomes longer when pyrite particles of larger sizes are fed. The feeding rate of pyrite particles and the gas velocity at the nozzle exit are also the important operating factors. These two factors are closely related to the volume fraction and the residence time of suspended particles in the gas stream, and the optimal combined levels of these factors at which the length of reaction zone becomes minimal were obtained.

SAFETY practice or the elimination of accidents in our coal mines is specifically a problem of management. It cannot be delegated to any governmental agency except that the various coal-producing states do and should have some minimum safety standard laws. However, the legislative method of attempting to control mine accidents is ineffective because of the delay between the necessity and the action. This chapter describes a new approach to the solution of stress distribution around underground openings utilizing the finite element method and employing stochastically simulated rock properties. It is well-known from extensive laboratory tests that the properties of rocks, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, are not single-valued but form some distribution. If the scatter of test data is attributed to the variability of the rock itself rather than due to an inadequacy in test procedure, then stress solutions have to consider these variations. Utilizing this basic philosophy, the present study was initiated. A long circular opening subjected to plane strain in a hydrostatic stress field was chosen as a specific example to illustrate this approach. The technique adopted in solving stress distributions was based on the finite element method. This method is essentially a generalization of standard structural analysis procedures in which the continuum is idealized as an assemblage of "elements," interconnected at a finite number of nodal points. It is capable therefore of handling different material properties for individual elements in the model, if desired. In this study, each individual element was assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous, and elastic. However, values for Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were randomly varied from element to element according to an assumed frequency distribution.

TO operate the bituminous coal industry in the United States in 1929 cost $770,237,000, of which $30,739,000 was paid for purchased power and $34,947,000 for new machinery and equipment. Equipment aggregated 3,124,000 hp. A mining industry that spends $65,000,000 a year for power and machinery is likely to be fairly well mechanized, and when the machinery in use takes three million horsepower to drive it, the probabilities are that mechanization has been in progress in at least some of the mines for quite a few years. Mechanization in its broadest sense implies machine cutting, power drilling, mechanical loading, electric haulage, mechanical sizing and cleaning, and lesser applications of machinery to mining operations. But the introduction and development of mechanical loading has been the feature of coal mining recently and its extraordinary progress is causing great changes within the industry. Because of the strict requirements on the quality of limestone that are dictated by the users, the operator was compelled to find new approaches to produce a product of uniform and acceptable quality. The raw material is controlled and monitored every two minutes by a special computer in order to ensure its quality. The required minimum and maximum quality constraint had an adverse effect on performance and consequently cost. In order to improve this performance, a Monte Carlo simulation model was developed and tested for the optimal truck allocation. The input data is based upon the distribution of equipment performances and costs.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March,1910.) THE Giroux Consolidated Mines Co. is equipping a five-compartment shaft at Kimberly, Nev., which will serve the Alpha mice. The depth of this shaft, January, 1910, is 963 ft., and of this depth 948 ft. was opened by raising, 15 ft. of sinking was done so that the bearers, collar-set, and three shaft-sets might be installed and concreted, and with this done it was possible to erect the necessary surface-equipment for resuming shaft-timbering on the completion of the raise. The arrangement of the shaft-timbering is shown in Fig. 1. At the 1,000-ft. level of the Alpha, and 750 ft. SW. from the Alpha shaft, a 14- by 18-ft. station was cut, and a 25-h-p. air-hoist *as installed. From here the raising commenced on July 5, 1909. The raise was cut approximately 13 by 21. ft. in area, and supported by timbering with square sets, illustrated in Fig. 2, which shows the division into four compartments. The end compartments, which were used as chutes, had the center girts heavier than in the others on account of the wear from falling rock. The chute-lining was braced by inserting 8- by 8-in. stiffeners parallel to and half way between successive caps. Similarly, the lagging on the wall sides of the cage-way and the compartment for pipes and ladder was stiffened with 4- by 6-in. timbers. In the pipe-and-ladder compartment the chute-stiffeners were reinforced with 8- by 8-in, struts, and as the cage-way was partitioned off by braced lining, there was practically no chance of rock entering the ladder-way in case a chute burst into the cage-way. Over the two center compartments the last two, sets were always bulkheaded with 8- by 12-in. timbers, shown in Fig. 3, and from the lower bulkhead the cage sheave-wheel was suspended. The coal industry of the United States in 1967 had reasons to be both exuberant and concerned about its present and future role in the economy of the country. Continuing a momentum that began in the early 1960's, the industry has moved ahead in providing competitive customized products to strengthen its long-term domestic and foreign commitments, and has maintained with steady progress its position as a major supplier of energy. On the other hand, the industry must overcome air- water pollution and conservation-reclamation problems that have been identified by 1967 legislation. Throughout the year, the industry was characterized as "progressive," "healthy" and "dynamic." To have been termed a "growth industry" in 1967, is an accolade the coal industry can accept with pride. Culminating its efforts throughout the decade, the industry has emerged with a competitive image that is representative of its future strength.

TWO papers, "Calcium, Strontium, and Barium Metals," by Charles Hardy and Paul M. Tyler, and "The Mining of Gems and Ornamental Stones by American Indians," by Sydney H. Ball, were presented before the Rare Minerals and Metals group at its session Tuesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Donald M. Liddell, chairman, presided. Mr. Tyler summarized the first paper, outlining the uses, history, occurrence, manufacture, production and trade, markets and prices of the three metals. In discussion, in response to the chairman's query on "what are they doing in Russia with calcium, strontium, and barium," Guy C. Riddell replied that nothing is being done on a production basis. The great rare metals plant in Moscow is active, however, on other elements. "They are making radium chloride, uranium oxide, vanadium, cadmium, tungsten, molybdenum, selenium, antimony compounds; and mercury, nickel and arsenic are under production at interior plants. The rare metals plant is busily conducting research on beryllium, rhenium, lithium, bismuth, strontium and zirconium. These are the main rare metal activities. AT the outset, said Mr. Guess, I may say that although I believe the present engineering courses in the various colleges and universities could be arranged to give the student within the same time limit a broader general education of un- doubted value, still I do not agree with the view held by many that engineers in comparison with those of other occupations-let us say doctors, lawyers, bankers, and so-called business men-seldom arrive at high executive positions. After all, we must remember that engineers are not very numerous as compared with the occupations just mentioned and therefore a lesser number reaching high executive positions stated numerically might be a larger number stated as a percentage. We all know there must be throughout the United States say three doctors to one engineer, but I don't think that even numerically there are as many doctors in high executive positions as engineers, and it is a fortunate thing for the country that doctors as a class are so busily engaged in alleviating sickness and suffering and in the advancement of medical science that they do not aim particularly for high executive positions.

THE equilibrium y phase in Cu-Be alloys forms by discontinuous precipitation, the new phase nucleating at the grain boundaries and growing into grains on both sides of the boundary. When the alloy is aged above 500°C, however, growth may take place into only one of the grains.1'2 In A1-Ag alloys it is known that the precipitate has the same orientation as the grain in which no growth takes place.3, 4 This was confirmed in the present investigation on a Cu-Be alloy. A Cu-1.79 wt pct Be alloy was solution-treated at 810°C for 2+ hr, quenched into water at O°C, and aged at 600°C for 1 hr in a salt bath. The specimen was thinned by chemical polishing and electropolishing at room temperature in a solution of H3PO4 saturated with CrOs. The foil produced was examined in a JEM 150 electron microscope operating at 150 kv. Fig. 1 shows precipitates growing on only one side of the grain boundary. INTRODUCTION The resurgence of coal mining activity in the United States, brought on by the spiraling costs of fossil fw1 energy in the Seventies, has come at a time of intense public concern for the quality of the environment. Notwithstanding pressure on our economy to develop alternate sources of fue1 energy to the import of oil, the legislatures of several states have reacted to public concern over the environment by passing strict regulations aimed at con- trolling the subsidence effect s of underground mining. Agencies of the federal government charged with assistance to the mining industry, including the Department of Energy and the Bureau of Mines, have sponsored a number of instrumentation and field measurement projects aimed at the development of subsidence prediction models that can aid the mine operator's task of subsidence control. There are good empirical models developed in Europe for subsidence prediction, but they were made possible by a large body of mining-induced subsidence data collected there over a long period of time. No com- parable subsidence data base exists in the United States, and consequently empirical modeling of subsidence is not a realistic approach for our near term needs. Moreover, the geologic and topographic diversity of the several coal regions in the United States is expected to necessitate the development of several empirical models, each one expected to be relevant to its own region. Because of the time and costs that are likely to be involved in an empirical modeling approach, it is considered more expedient and cost effective to develop a general, mechanistic model for subsidence prediction purposes. In order to develop such a model, it is necessary to investigate and quantify the mechanics of the subsidence process from the mine level up to the ground surface. The series of projects discussed in this paper are designed to achieve this objective and include the following work: (1) the identification of geotechnical instrumentation that will pro- vide mine level overburden and surface subsidence data. (2) a field demonstration of selected instruments, and (3) documentation of case histories for complete subsidence mechanics, using the demonstrated and preferred instruments. An identification of feasible instrumentation and monitoring techniques was completed by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in 1977 (O'Rourke and others). This paper discusses a demonstration of those instruments at a mine in Utah, and at two subsequent projects, currently underway at longwall mines in Colorado and West Virginia. 'he latter two projects when complete will provide documented case histories of subsidence mechanics. The process of optimizing subsidence instrumentation and monitoring techniques to the conditions encountered during installation and monitoring for these underground mines is shown to be an evolving one, and one which has had some notable successes to date. INITIAL DEMONSTRATION The initial design and demonstration of selected monitoring systems was carried out at the SUFCO No. 1 mine, near Salina, Utah. The instrumented panel was approximately 152 m wide. 640 m long. and was 290 m to 320 m deep. The mined height of coal. seam averaged 2.4 m. The mining method was room and pillar using continuous mining machines. This method allowed some monitoring of the supported condition during development, and eventually allowed monitoring of a caved system when both chain pillars and room pillars were extracted on retreat. The two instrument systems shown on Table 1 were selected from the earlier feasibility report for demonstration at SUFCO No. 1. Collectively, the two systems, one for a fully-supported mining method and the other for a fully-caved method, incorporate most of the instrumentation to be found within all five systems listed in the earlier feasibility report. The instrumentation includes surface, subsurface and mine monitoring installations. All of the SUFCO instruments selected to meet the specifications of the general instrument types listed on Table 1 were manually operated. That is, data from the installed system could only be obtained while a person was there to physically observe or operate the system readout. Automatic data recording equipment was available for some installations, but the objectives were to keep the systems as simple as possible for the demonstration project. A complete description of the surface, sub- surface and mine level instruments, and the demonstration project results are given in WCC (1982), and selected features are discussed in this paper.

(New York -Meeting, February, 1912.) TORCHES were used by the early Romans for mine-lighting, and these were followed by open lamps or earthen jars filled with tallow or oil, and later by candles. In early coal-mining, explosive gases seldom occurred, and, if they were encountered, the danger of explosion was materially diminished by the absence of any ventilating-system and the consequent insufficient circulation of air to form with the methane an explosive mixture. As the art advanced, the danger of fire-damp became more apparent, and methods for testing the air were resorted to as early as in the fifteenth century. The method of testing consisted in lowering a clog in a, basket down the shaft. As soon as he encountered fire-damp he would commence to howl, after which he was withdrawn, and a leafy bush was fastened to the end of the rope and run rapidly up and clown the shaft. This so disturbed the accumulation of gas as to cause it to rise out of the shaft. Later this odd method of testing was improved upon through the discovery that a light inserted in a body of fire-dam p would produce a blue flame. Candles were used for this purpose, and, when fire-damp was thus discovered, brushing or some other primitive method of fanning was resorted to for driving out the gas. In some instances the gas was burned away, regardless of the danger thereby incurred. A man, wearing a well-moistened coat and a mask with glass spectacles, descended in the mine a few hours before each shift. With a long stick, to which was fastened a burning torch or candle, lie would crawl on the floor with the stick so raised that the light would sweep the roof and ignite the gas which it encountered. Hans Lundherg offered some constructive criticism of last year's report by the Geophysics Education Commit- tee, making a plea for more training in field techniques and less insistence on rigorous theoretical training. Carl Heiland pointed out the necessity of making geophysics and geology courses more attractive in order to draw more students into these fields. Exception was taken to this line of reasoning by Father Macelwane and Sherwin F. Kelly who emphasized the necessity for sound basic training if competent geophysicists were to be turned out. This discussion developed apropos of the report of the Geophysics Education Committee, which had been postponed from the Education Division meetings, but was not read as it was available in mimeographed form.
