Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

A phase diagram for the Ta-Zr system is presented. The system is of the minimum-melting point type with the 0-zirconium phase decomposing monotectoidally at 785°C and 95.5 at. pct Zr. The minimum solidus temperature is 1875°C and the temperature of the top of the monotectoid loop is 1775°C. Techniques employed included X-ray diffraction and fluorescmce, electron microprobe analyses, diffusion couples, metallography, and melting-point measurements. Errors due to interstitial solutes and in melting observations are particularly common in this system, and their occurrence is discussed. SEVERAL versions of the Ta-Zr phase diagram have been reported in the literature.lm7 Williams et al.' report a diagram of the minimum-melting point type with a monotectoid reaction at 800°C and 12 wt pct Ta. The minimum in the solidus occurs at 1820°C and 25 wt pct Ta, while the top of the monotectoid gap is located at 1780°C and 80 wt pct Ta. The experimental techniques employed were metallography, electrical resistance variation with temperature, dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and direct observation of melting by the technique of Pirani and ~lterthum.' Experience in the Nb-Zr phase diagram has shown that small changes in the interstitial content can cause large shifts in the positions of the phase boundaries. Small amounts of inter -stitials can cause similar changes in the Ta-Zr system and may be responsible for the wide variations in the phase diagrams previously reported.'-' The authors15 have found that alloys containing 0.75 wt pct 0 and 1.0 wt pct Ni with tantalum contents from 19 to 85 at. pct often contain a lamellar or cellular precipitate after annealing above 1400°C. This precipitate is very similar to that reported by pollack,12 Ralls," and Donlevy17 for the Ni-Zr system. In the present investigation, a wider variety of experimental techniques and improved alloy purity were applied to the resolution of errors in diagrams for this system as they now appear in the literature. New results have been obtained in the areas of alloy homogeneity and purity. Errors in the common techniques of direct melting observation in binary alloys have been demonstrated. In the commercially important high-tantalum region, the more accurate metallographic method of solidus determination has been employed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nominal analyses of the materials employed are given in Table I. The zirconium was low hafnium reactor grade iodide crystal bar, and the tantalum was in the form of high-purity sheet. Powders were impossible to use because of gas content. The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

The petroleum industry experienced a year of satisfactory accomplishment in Oklahoma during 1945. Crude oil production was increased, a new record for recent years was established in well completions, and refinery operations were maintained at a maximum level. Daily average crude oil production increased to 382,000 bbl., reflecting a 13.5 per cent gain compared with production during the previous pear. Total wells drilled during 1945 amounted to 2556, a gain of 28.7 per cent over 1944 Refinery throughout averaged 187,500 bbl. daily, an increase of approximately 4 percent over the preceding year.

TARNISH films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper .2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen. sulphide in air to form the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (1) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of T= MX10 8 2D X 96,494 X 103 (a) where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angström units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values2 of t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.

The works of the Tula Iron Company are in the Republic of Mexico, State of Jalisco, twenty-eight leagues southwest of Guadalajara, ten leagues northwest of the town of Sayula, through which passes the projected line of the Mexican National Railroad. The authors are to be congratulated for presenting the first comprehensive paper on the theory and practice of threshold pressure determination in connection with underground gas storage. It is of particular value since most previous experimental work on this subject has been proprietary to the commercial laboratories engaged in such testing and to their clients. This dlscussion is presented in amplification of the subject paper, not in criticism, and is based upon our experience with approximately 5,000 threshold pressure determinations. Our comments are directed primarily to the experimental procedures as described by Thomas et al. It should be noted that, while clay mineral-rich lithologies are the most common caprock materials, the samples used (Table 1) include low permeability sandstones and carbonates, but do not include shales or other formations in which clav minerals exert a dominant effect. While our experience on samples analogous to those investigated by the authors generally confirms their findings, we have found that even more rigorous experimental conditions must be imposed where clay minerals are the controlling factor. These additional conditions result from the well-known molecular character of the clay minerals themselves in which water is interlaminated with, and bonded to, silicate sheets, thus becoming an essential component of the molecule. In many clay minerals the character of the intersheet bonding, and thus the dimension of the lattice, is strongly affected by variations in the identity and concentration of cations present in the intersilicate water. On a supermolecular scale, adsorbed water films on particle or "flakes" of shale provide much of the cohesive force necessary to maintain mechanical strength. The thickness of these films is variable and inversely proportional to intergranular pressure within the dimensional limits involved in caprock investigation. The thickness of the intersilicate water layers may also be subject to pressure under some conditions. These considerations are reflected in several necessary modifications of the experimental procedures described by the authors. Two of these are, in our judgment and experience, of such importance that they cast real doubt on the validity of data obtained on argillaceous materials without their application. The very careful resaturation procedures proposed by the authors should give good results in connection with the relatively "inert" lithologies used in their experiments. Our experience suggests, however, that they would create more problems than they would eliminate if applied to argillaceous materials. 1. Drying of the sample at the temperature and for the duration indicated by the authors not only will dessicate the sample with consequent shrinkage cracking, parting along bedding planes, and even total disassociation in the case of fissile shales, but it may also alter the character of the clay minerals themselves — in some cases irreversibly. 2. Prolonged evacuation to 2 microns Hg further dessicates the sample and is even more effective in reducing the intersilicate water content. 3. Resaturation with water differing in pH or chemical content from that existing originally in the sample also serves to alter the nature of the sample, particularly its structure and strength. 4. Our experience has been that, even with the thorough precautions proposed by the authors, complete resaturation of very fine grained materials is rarely obtained. Yet our experience confirms the

OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

How will phosphate producers in southeastern Idaho fare with growing governmental regulations and environmentalism of the late 1970's? With a similarity that is reminiscent of the battles between the coal industry and environmental-conservation groups earlier in the decade, Idaho's future growth and a nation's need for phosphate fertilizer products remain uncertain. The catalyst that brought the issue to the forefront was the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) addressing the development of phosphate resources in southeastern Idaho. Although the final EIS was published in August 1977, resolution of rational and orderly growth in this potentially vital region remains stifled as Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus virtually "sits" on it.

The porosities of fractured limestone reservoirs can be divided into two broad types in accordance with their effects on fluid distribution and fluid flow. In the coarse porosity, gravity segregation lakes place freely and the resistance to fluid flow is very small. In the fine porosity there is no segregation and a high resistance to flow, and it has relative permeability characteristics similar to tight sandstones. By analyzing the affect of the two porosities it is concluded that in some cases to recover the maximum amount of oil it is necessary to remove large quantities of gas from the reservoir by producing at high gas-oil ratios. In this manner the fine porosity is drained of its oil and the gas-oil contact drops slowly permitting higher production rates from the oil leg. Since this conclusion is contrary to widely accepted principles of conservation, a mathematical model (Fig. I) was constructed to duplicate the conditions desired. The behavior of the model indicates that under certain conditions it is possible to recover more oil by producing at high gas-oil ratios than by production at low gas-oil ratios, and that the rate of production is affected more by gas shut-offs than by the decrease in pressure (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5). INTRODUCTION It has been noted that certain limestone reservoirs behave in such a way as to indicate that there are two distinct types of porous spaces available for fluid storage and fluid flow. Regardless of the nature of these porous spaces the distinguishing characteristic is that in one type of porous space there is definite gravity segregation between the oil and the gas; while in the other, the gas evolved tends to remain distributed equally throughout the reservoir. For the sake of simplicity the porosity in which gravity segregation takes place at a fast enough rate to affect the behavior will be called "coarse po- rosity", while that in which this is not so will be termed "fine porosity". The behavior of a reservoir of this type would be different than that of a sandstone reservoir, especially if most of the oil is in the fine porosity. SEVERAL years ago I became interested in computing the historic lead production of the United States, and the mines, or mining districts whence derived. This led me subsequently to an examination of the recent records- of some of the American zinc-mining districts and of the great lead and zinc-mining districts in foreign countries. My present article thus will be to a large extent an addendum to my book, "World Survey of the Zinc Industry," which was published by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America in 1931, and to which I shall refer hereinafter as Ingalls, op. cit. Throughout this article all expressions of tons mean the ton of 2000 lb. Where original data have been given in metric tons I have converted in many instances simply by multiplying by 1.1, and long tons by 1.12. I have not been fussy about digits and have rounded off many figures. These may explain differences between data herein and other data.

THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

Scope for Thermal Recovery in Shell's Heavy Oil Fields in Venezuela The main heavy oil reservoirs on the East coast of Lake Maracaibo (Fig. I), known as "Bolivar Coast", initially contained some 20 billion bbl of oil in place with gravities in the range of 10 to 15° API. The current total production rate is about 400,000 B/D. Since the recovery to date is on an average only 12.5 percent of the initial oil in place, these fields offer a vast potential for secondary recovery methods. The reservoirs are characterized by moderate depth (generally 1,000 to 3,000 ft; maximum 5,000 ft), good formation properties such as net oil sand thickness (50 to 300 ft), high porosity (30 to 40 percent) permeability (1 to 3 darcies) and oil saturation (initially about 80 percent) and high oil viscosity (100 to 10,000 cp in situ), all of which are favorable for the application of thermal recovery processes. Since 1957, steam drive, steam "soak" and underground combustion have been tested or are being tested in this area.1-3 This paper deals with a major steam drive test in the Tia Juana field. The test was commenced in Sept., 1961, on the basis of encouraging results of laboratory experiments and pilot field tests, which will be discussed briefly. Early Laboratory Investigation of the Steam Drive Process In 1956 a series of model experiments was carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amster- dam, to investigate the displacement of heavy oil by steam.' The prototype studied was a horizontal, un-consolidated heavy oil reservoir, subjected to a linear steam drive. The model, representing a slab from this reservoir along the main flow direction, consisted of a steel tube filled with oil-saturated sand, provided with layers of rock at the top and bottom to simulate conductive heat losses to cap and base rock. Lateral heat losses, perpendicular to the main flow direction, were minimized by insulating the sides of the model. Heat flow and viscosity and gravity forces were scaled by taking the steam injection rate and sand permeability inversely proportional to the geometric reduction factor of the model, and using materials (oil, steam, cap rock, etc.) identical with those of the prototype. The main feature of the process was a frontal displacement mechanism that was observed within wide ranges of injection pressure and rate, oil viscosity, initial oil saturation and sand permeability. The high stability of this front can be attributed to the high volumetric steam flow rates, combined with the reduction in oil viscosity. High recoveries were obtained due to the low residual oil saturation of about 15 percent in the zone swept by steam. The latter value pertains to the specific test conditions (heavy oil, uncon-solidated sand) and may be lower for light oil, due to the effects of steam distillation. ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet.

MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11
