CERRO'S power system consists of three main hydroelectric plants and one steam-electric plant. These are located on the eastern slope of the main Andes range at altitudes between 12,000 and 13,000 ft. The hydroelectric group utilizes the watershed which extends for about 150 kilometers south from Cerro de Pasco, divided into two catchment areas which lie adjacent. The northern area serve,, the medium-head plant of Mal¬paso. while the southern area provides for the high-head plants at Pachachaca and Oroya. The rainfall, as registered at the rain gauging stations of the three hydroelectric plants, averages 33 in. per year; all these stations are subject to the same hydrological conditions, and the bulk of precipitation occurs between October and March. Rainfall during the dry season, April till September, has no appreciable effect on the total annual runoff. Table 1 shows the storage capacities of the main reservoirs of the hydroelectric group. The four plants are tied together electrically by a 50-kv. transmission network, the system being 3-phase 3-wire at 60 cycles with a solidly grounded

On grinding in pure water, zirconium, tantalum, iron, and stainless-steel powders were extensively comminuted and simultaneously oxidized with hydrogen release, whereas nickel, copper, and silver powders did not react with water and their particle sizes increased. On grinding nickel, copper, and silver in water pressurized with oxygen, nickel and copper became extensively comminuted and were oxidized, whereas silver did not react with oxygen and its particle size increased. From these results and other considerations , it is hypothesized that for extensive comminution of ductile metals and alloys to occur on grinding they must react with the grinding media. UlTRAFINE metal and alloy powders are finding an ever-growing number of applications in metallurgy and in other fields.' Of particular interest are ultrafine metal and alloy powders suitable for dispersion strengthening.2'9 Various research programs on dispersion strengthening are being carried out and in some of these programs the ball-milling method is being used to produce dispersion-strengthened materials. This method usually involves the simultaneous grinding of metal or alloy and a dispersoid followed by consolidation of the resulting powder mixture. To obtain the ultrafine powders required for dispersion strengthening,' grinding is carried out in many liquids, including aqueous and nonaqueous media, with or without grinding aids.4'5 Nonaqueous liquids usually contain water as an impurity and some grinding aids may contain water of hydration.5 The water present may affect the grinding process. The writer has shown5 that. on ball milling chromium in water, the chromium is oxidized and hydrogen is released. It was surmised that the same reaction may occur on ball milling other metals and alloys in waterbearing liquids. Therefore, the investigation of ball milling in water was extended to metals and alloys other than chromium. In the course of the investigation, however, it became apparent that the data-to-gether with the results from a few additional experi-ments—could be used to postulate a comminution mechanism for ductile metals and alloys. A well-known comminution theory is that of smekal.7 According to this theory, comminution is possible because of the weakening effects of surface cracks and other imperfections in materials. This theory imposes a lower limit of about 1 µm for the ground particles. The beneficial effects of liquids and additives on the rate of grinding are well known.8 Mechanisms by which liquids and additives may aid in grinding were reviewed by Rose and Sullivan.' One aspect of these effects is based on Rehbinder's theory of crack propagation in materials under stress.9 According to Reh-binder's theory, liquids or additives may promote the spread of cracks in stressed materials by lowering the surface tension at the crack tip. Rose and Sullivan surmise that the same mechanism may be operative during grinding, thereby facilitating comminution of the particles. In addition, Rose and Sullivan reviewed how additives may act as dispersants as a result of their being adsorbed on the surface of the particles being ground. This concept has been suggested by Quatinetz, Schafer, and smea15 to explain from their experiments the major role of additives that enabled them to grind metal down to 0.1 µm. Discussions of other comminution theories and additional sources of material on the subject will be found in Ref. 10. None of these previous suggestions and theories, however, can account for all phenomena encountered during ball milling of metals to submicron size in this and in a previous investigation by the author.6 The objectives of this investigation were to determine the behavior of metal powders during ball milling either in pure water or in oxygenated water and to gain an insight into the grinding mechanism. Zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver powders were ball-milled in pure water. These metals were selected because their oxides cover a wide range of free energies of formation. For comparison purposes, an alloy-type 430 stainless steel-was also ball-milled in pure water. The pressure of the hydrogen released during ball milling was monitored in order to determine the oxygen that combined with the metal or alloy. In order to obtain more information on the nature of the grinding process, nickel, copper, and silver powders were also ball-milled in oxygenated water (water pressurized with oxygen). The oxygen that reacted with the powders was determined from the pressure decrease in the mills. The powders resulting from ball milling in pure water and in oxygenated water were subjected to surface area, optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses. With these data, the oxygen calculated to be combined with the metals during ball milling, and comparison of the free energies of formation of the oxides of the milled powders with that of water, a comminution mechanism was postulated. MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, AND PROCEDURES The materials used in this investigation were powdered metals, deaerated distilled water, high-purity helium, and commercial grade (99.5 pct purity) oxygen. The powdered metals used were zirconium, tantalum, iron, nickel, copper, and silver. A 16 pct Cr, ferritic stainless steel, type 430, was also used. The purities (or nominal compositions) and the surface areas of these metals and the alloy are given in Table I.

The preferred orientations detleloped during cold rolling, annealing, and hot rolling of low-carbon steel sheets have been investigated by means of an inverse pole figure technique. And X-ray line profile meas-urerrlents were made for the study of the factor which causes the textural changes between cold-rolled and recrystallized sheets. From ND (sheet normal divection) and RD (rolling direction) inverse Pole figures tlze axis detisity change with increasing cold reduction was measured and the Preferred orientations were analyzed. These results can be explained by crystal rotation due to slip during rolling deformation. The ND axis density change during annealing of cold-rollitig sheets is contrary to the change observed in the case of rolling. It was found that the orientation dependency of stored strain energy resulting from cold rolling apparently corresponds to the textural changes during recrystallization. The texture in hot-rolled sheets was found to be influenced by finishing tenlperatltre. In a sheet kol-rolled below the Ar, temperature a significant differernce in texture between the surface and central layers was obtained, the former having {hkl}(111} and {110 )(uvw) orientations and the latter having {pqr}( 110) orientation. A large number of investigations1 6 have been made on the textures of iron and low-carbon steel sheets, and, since it was shown7 13 that preferred orientations are closely related to deep drawability of steel sheets, studies14" 7 on the influence of production processes upon textures have been made from the standpoint of industrial interest. Generally, the textures in low-carbon steel sheets have several components of preferred orientations, but the overlapping of poles makes it difficult to analyze texture quantitatively from pole figures. On the other hand, an inverse pole figure directly expresses quantitative values of components of preferred orientations as the density of a certain sample axis with respect to the crystallite coordinates. Such a texture representation is desirable for a study of deep drawability. The purpose of the present work is to use both inverse and conventional pole figures, with emphasis on the former, to clar~fy the textural changes ~n low-carbon steel sheets by the production processes of hot rolling, cold rolling, and annealing. And the factor causing the textural changes during annealing is studied using an X-ray diffraction line profile technique. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sheet specimens for study of cold rolling and annealing textures were taken from a hot-rolled strip of rimmed steel 2.7 mm thick. The chemical composition is shown in Table I. Although the study of cold-rolling textures requires a suitable material with random orientation, it is difficult to produce a perfect random one. But the used specimens, obtained from the hot-rolled strip with a finishing temperature higher than Ar3, were nearly random, such as shown in Fig. 15. These were cold-rolled to various reductions by a 4-high rolling mill with 150-mm-diam work rolls and 300-mm-diam backup rolls. The influence of hot-rolling conditions such as finishing and coiling temperatures on textures of hot-rolled strips was studied. The chemical compositions of these hot coils are given in Table I1 and the hot-rolling conditions are given in Table 111. inverse Pole ~i~ure -~easurement. Two methods for determining inverse pole figures with high precision have been proposed. The first, by Jetter et a1.,18 consists of obtaining mean densities of divided regions in a unit stereographic triangle by solving simultaneous linear equations to approximate the integral relation between conventional and inverse pole figures. The second, proposed by ~oe'~-'~ and Bunge,22'23 consists of determining an expanded series of spherical surface harmonics which express axis densities from several sets of pole distribution data. Both methods require laborious numerical calculations which make them unsuitable for practical use. During the past year considerable work dealing with the mechanical properties and microstructure following the anneal under uniform condi-tions of certain types of commercial rolled brass has been done in this laboratory. Since these experiments were conducted with the active cooperation of the Bridgeport Brass Co., involving free use of its product, and have thus furnished information which is characteristic of some of its special mixtures, full publication of the numerical relationships and comparative results encountered does not seem justifiable. Some of the more general features of this work are, however, available and it is our present purpose to use the material in question, along with some results of special tests, in discussing the characteristics of recrystallization as related to the degree of hardening by strain and the ordinary annealing variables. We desire to make acknowledgment of the many courtesies extended by Mr. Charles Ferry, Metallurgist of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and the value of his cooperation, which has greatly stimulated the study of brass in this laboratory. A clear and systematic presentation of the principal relations between temperature and time of anneal, the changing physical properties and microstructure and the degree of previous reduction by cold-rolling, was first made, in the case of rolled brass and copper, by the French engineer, C. Grard,' in 1909, although much fragmentary information of this general character had appeared earlier and the main facts involved were undoubtedly known to many brass specialists through their own private research. THE RELATION between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An intercrystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows.

DURING the last few years, the trend in the aircraft and automotive industries has been toward higher and higher operating engine temperatures. This has created considerable interest in the effect of temperature on the properties of alloys. In the magnesium field, it has been recognized for many years that the addition of cerium imparts high strength and good resistance to creep at elevated temperatures. Beck,1 in his treatise on-magnesium, has summarized the work of German investigators. This includes the unpublished data of Menking, showing the increase in strength and hardness of extruded alloys containing 2 to 20 per cent Ce at temperatures from 200 to 300°C. (68° to 572°F.) and the results of Vosskühler, who demonstrated the improved resistance to creep of alloys containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn and 0.5 per cent Ce plus 2 per cent Mn at 150°C. (302°F.). Wellinger and Keil2 have also reported the creep properties of a forged magnesium-cerium-manganese alloy at 200° and 250°C. (392° and 482°F.). Haughton and Prytherch have determined the tensile properties of various forged magnesium alloys containing cerium, cerium plus manganese, cerium plus calcium, cerium plus nickel, cerium plus nickel plus manganese, and cerium plus cobalt plus manganese at temperatures up to 290°C. (554°F.). Magnesium-cerium alloys have been used in some commercial applications. It is reported that an alloy containing 3 per cent Ce plus 0.5 per cent Mn plus 0.5 per cent Ca is being used on a forged impeller in Great Britain. Two forged parts made from an alloy with a nominal composition of 5 per cent Ce and 2 percent Mn have been found on the German .BMW-801D aircraft engine. These two forgings consist of a supercharger impeller and a rear cam-follower guide. In this country, several types of pistons have been made experimentally in both .the cast and the forged conditions from an alloy containing 6 per cent Ce plus 2 per, cent Mn and in the cast condition from an alloy of magnesium plus 10 per cent Ce. The cast pistons have been tested in various types of internal-combustion engines, with promising results. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation on the properties of various cerium-containing magnesium alloys in both the cast and the forged conditions. Data are presented to show the beneficial effects of increasing amounts of cerium on the mechanical properties of magnesium at elevated temperatures. The effects of heat-treatment on the properties of these alloys and the attendant changes in the microstructure are discussed. The

I. INTRODUCTION VOLCANIC origin. was among the first of the theories advanced to account for the occurrence of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain, northern Louisiana., and eastern Texas, and it is still being re-stated in various forms by the most recent contributors to our knowledge of the geology of such deposits. Argument has been largely by analogy and attention has repeatedly been called to the Mexican oil fields, particularly those of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, because of the occurrence of oil in close proximity to volcanic plugs in those fields, an occurrence supposed to have some resemblance to the common occurrence of oil in the salt domes of the United States. The author, having spent several months of the past year in a general study of salt domes and in a detailed study of certain domes in the United States, and having been acquainted for some time with the exploration of similar domes in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, Mexico, and with the general geology of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, Mexico, has reviewed the various theories of volcanic origin for salt domes which have been advanced to the present time. The purpose of this paper is to present such review and to discuss the supposed Mexican analogy.

DURING the early years of Homestake operations, shaft signaling from the cage tenders to the hoisting engineers was done by mechanical means. Small steel cables or jointed steel rods were suspended in the shaft compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' stations by means of bell cranks and steel wires. The system was simple and economical and served the purpose well until the mine reached a depth of 1000 ft., then the system became slow and cumbersome and required a considerable amount of muscular effort to operate it with much speed, because of the inertia of the heavy moving parts. The mechanical signaling was superseded by a simple electrical system consisting of a single pair of wires in steel conduit for each shaft compartment. In the shaft at each station a pull switch was connected to the wires. The switches were operated by means of bell cords, which extended from station to station. This electrical system was a great improvement over the mechanical one, but it had one serious drawback, which also applied to the older system; namely, the engineer did not know where a signal originated. Later on this signaling was improved to overcome this drawback, and to give the engineer a positive indication of a signal's origin. In this system a separate return wire from each pull switch is carried to an annunciator at the engineer's station, where it indicates the signal's origin. While the annunciator system used by Homestake is very safe and reliable, it has the inherent drawback of all wire-connected systems in that it is impossible to send a signal from a moving cage. A number of years ago Homestake became interested in the possibility of using some sort of radio transmission for shaft signaling. The company did much experimental work with purely radio signal transmission, but no practical way was discovered to use radio transmission in a mine shaft for signaling to or from a cage. Therefore, all efforts were directed to devising a practical way of using the hoisting rope as part of the circuit. It was realized that the return circuit from the rope would need to be through electrostatic coupling between the cage and the earth or ground sides of the shaft, because the guides would not always be wet enough to make possible good electrical contact between the cage and earth, therefore relatively high-frequency alternating current was chosen as the medium of transmission. Soon a practical system was developed for transmitting an electric current from a moving cage over an electric circuit of which the hoisting rope was a part. The Bulletin. The Bulletin of the Institute will be issued hereafter monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates tin? membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will lie: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. Lt is probable that a supplementary session of this meeting, will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the farther discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. It is now reasonably certain that the XCVIIth meeting will be held oil the Pacific Coast, including a. visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en. route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. A FEATURE of the International Geological Congress to be held at Pretoria, South Africa, in the summer of 1929,. will be a symposium on the gold resources of the world. In this connection the U. S. Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines have been asked to prepare a report, showing production in the United States, describing the geology of its principal gold- producing districts, and estimating reserves (a) assuming a continuation of presen6economic conditions, and (b) assuming lower costs. This report will not be completed before April 1, but data thus far assembled are here presented with the hope of profiting by discussion and by information from those well informed on any of the important gold-producing districts. Gold production in the United States rose to a maximum exceeding $100,000,000 in 1915 and then rapidly declined to about $52,000,000 in 1920. Since then it has fluctuated, but on the whole slightly declined. Reviews of the eight leading states afford the following tentative conclusions :

The flow stress of a series of Ni-Cr-A1 alloys consisting of a dispersion of y' (based on Ni3Al) in a rnatrix of nickel-base solid solution y has been measured at temperatures up to 950°C as a fwzction of the volume fraction of y'. At high temperatures the flow stress is controlled by the amount of Y' in the alloy, i.e., the higher the volume fraction of y', the greater is the flow stress. This simple relationship is not obeyed at low temperatures in so far as a peak in the flow stress-volume fraction relation occurs at about 25 pct y'. The variation in the mechanical properlies of these alloys as a function of both temperature and volume fraction of y' has been correlated with changes in distribution of both the dislocations and y'. The results are interpreted on the basis that at low temperatures the y matrix is strengthened significantly bv the presence of a hyperfine y' precipitate due to decomposition on cooling; at high temperatures the y matrix is a single phase of low strength. It is clearly recognized that the high temperature strength of most nickel-base superalloys depends upon a dispersion of the ordered fcc phase y', based on Ni3A1, in a fcc solid solution matrix y based on nickel. Although the volume fraction of y' varies widely from about 0.2 in Nimonic 80A to about 0.6 in Mar-M200, all such nickel-base alloys manifest an unusual insensi-tivity of the flow stress with respect to temperature. In Mar-M200 for example, the 0.2 pct flow stress remains essentially constant from room temperature to 750°C. The conclusion has been drawn1 that the characteristically low temperature dependence of the flow stress of y-y' nickel-base alloys is obtained when the state of dispersion of y' is such that dislocations are forced to cut through the y' particles at the onset of yielding. When the spacing between the y' particles is so large that the flow stress is controlled by dislocation bowing between particles, then the initial flow stress decreases progressively with an increase in temperature at a rate determined by changes in elastic properties. The same conclusion is inherent in the detailed, mechanistic model of the deformation process in commercial superalloys which has been developed by Copley and ear' in which the temperature independent flow stress is attributed primarily to the contribution of the antiphase boundary energy created in the y' particles during deformation. In this theory the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is a reflection of the constant antiphase boundary energy as a function of temperature. An important microstructural parameter that is relevant to the explanations that have been suggested' to account for the temperature insensitivity of the flow stress is the volume fraction of y'. To vary the latter to any significant extent in a given commercial alloy is clearly difficult. However, it is possible in a relatively simple Ni-Al-Cr ternary system which manifests analogous microstructures in terms of the distribution of y' in y and contains specific alloys which have flow properties that depend on temperature in a manner quite similar to their more complex commercial counterparts. Hornbogen et . have studied precipitation phenomena and deformation mechanisms in such alloys but only where the y' volume fraction was small (less than 0.2) and the y' particle size varied from less than 100A up to a maximum of -1000A. In the present study, a series of alloys was prepared in which the volume percent of y' at 900°C was varied from 0 to 100 pct with the y' particle size (of the order 0.5 p) comparable to the sizes obtained in commercial superalloys. Particular attention has been given to the relationship between variations in the volume fraction and distribution of y' and the temperature dependence of the flow stress EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-Cr-Al system was selected because it is well characterized, bears a close relationship to commercial alloys, and offers the advantage of an extra degree of freedom over a binary system. In the present investigation, a series of alloys across the tie line between NisA1 and Ni3Cr (Ni3Cr is not an in-termetallic compound, the nomenclature is only used to designate the composition) were vacuum cast. The pseudobinary6 and the composition of the alloys used are shown in Fig. 1. It is important to note that the compositions of the y phase and the y' phase in the two-phase alloys was always the same. Alloy compositions were selected from the binary diagram, Fig. 1, in order that aging at 900°C would produce from 0 (100 pct y) to 100 pct y' by volume percent. (The size of the y' particles produced during the equilibrium aging treatment increased as the volume fraction of y' increased, ranging from about 0.2 p at low volume fractions up to about 0.8 p at the highest volume fraction.) The y' phase is based on the inter-metallic compound Ni,A1 which has the fcc LIZ type superlattice structure, and chromium substitutes for aluminum in the structure. The y phase is a disordered fcc solid solution. The alloys were heat treated at 1150°C for 2 hr, air cooled to room temperature, and finally annealed for 16 hr at 900°C. The rods were then centerless ground to 0.25 in. diam and cut into compression samples 0.5 in. long. The compression tests were made on an In-stron machine at a strain rate of 7 x 10"4 sec-'. A rapid heating radiant heat furnace was used which minimized the heating and temperature stabilization time to 10 min for the highest testing temperature. All the tests were stopped after 5 pct plastic strain.

IN present-day flotation practice, grinding of the flotation feed is carried to extremely fine sizes, 70 to 80 per cent minus 200 mesh being customary. The greatest flotation losses occur in the coarsest and finest sizes, but the losses in the very fine sizes are, of course, much the more important because of the large proportion of fines in the feed. These losses are particularly high in zinc ores so a study of the effect of size on the flotation of sphalerite has been made. The mineral used in these experi¬ments was a pure sphalerite, especially free from copper, from the Joplin district in Missouri. The sizes coarser than 200 mesh were separated by screening, the sized mineral then being deslimed on a Wilfley table. The sizes finer than 200 mesh were obtained by water elutriation as described by H. R. Bradford (M. S. Thesis, University of Utah, 1932) ; particles finer than 6.5 microns could not be obtained with the apparatus used.

Large volumes of hydrogen are liberated at the cathode during electrolytic precipitation of manganese. Most of the gas escapes from the electrolyte, but a considerable amount may be entrapped in the manganese plate. Gas has been observed to escape from manganese melts in puffs that bite at the surface. It has been reported that castings made with electrolytic manganese tend to rise in the molds; for this reason the manganese is often treated to remove hydrogen before the melt is made or it is premelted and used as cast manganese in making the alloys. The effect of hydrogen on the properties of manganese and its alloys is not known, but its effect on iron and iron alloys has been studied extensively.l.2 The close relationship between iron and manganese suggests that hydrogen may have a similar effect on the properties of manganese and its alloys. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the amount of hydrogen or other gases in typical commercial electrolytic manganese sheet and to investigate ways of removing it most conveniently. Apparatus The apparatus used is shown schematically in Fig. I. It consists of a chamber A in which the metal sample is placed, a vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The specimen chamber was made of two concentric quartz tubes. The outer one, a, connects with the closed gas system and is surrounded by the furnace G. A second tube, b, fits closely inside a and has a small end that projects into the space for the specimen and holds the thermocouple for measuring the temperature of the sample. The inner tube is joined to the outer tube outside the furnace, with rubber tape and sealing wax, to prevent gas leakage into or out of the closed system. This type of specimen container is loaded very easily and can be used several times if molten metal does not come in contact with the quartz. An ordinary mercury manometer B is used to measure the pressure in the system. The volume gauge C is essentially another mercury manometer, but the volume of the column is much larger than normal and the height of the mercury can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of IOO C.C. for a 60-cm. length. For larger changes in gas volumes, auxiliary containers F were used to increase the volume of the system by known amounts. Valves were arranged so that these auxiliary containers could be filled from the system and evacuated by the pump as often as necessary to accommodate the increases in the volume of gas in the system. The furnace G, used to heat the samples, was equipped with an automatic temperature controller, which maintained the desired temperatures within ± 5°C.

A specially built "hard" tensile machine with characteristics permitting the precise detertnination of the drop of the load at the yield point has been used to study the magnitude of the yield-point phenotnenon in prestrained martensitic 4340 steel. A new phenonzenon, the appearance of a secondary yield point, has been observed by holding the specimen at constant strain in the plastic region. Furthermore, it has been found that a series of yield-point drops could be introduced by successive constant strain holds in the plastic region. The isothermal kinetics of the development of the secondary yielding point lave been studied at four temperatures: 24° 0° -18°, and -79°C. From the results of the kinetic investigation, equations for the In a previous investigation1 it was shown that, contrary to generally held opinion, steels of medium carbon content, such as 4340, 4140, and 86B30, in the as-quenched martensitic condition, can be cold-drawn through a die with reductions in area of up to 10 pct without cracking. Tensile specimens of 4340 machined from bars quenched and prestrained in this manner exhibited tensile strengths of about 400,000 psi coupled with 30 pct reductions in area. In addition, it was found that each sample of such steels exhibited a yield point in the quenched, cold-drawn condition. Since these studies were conducted on a commercial hydraulic testing machine of a type which is not well-suited to detailed study of yield-point behavior, it was decided to study this phenomenon more thoroughly on a rigid straining machine. In this new investigation, use of such a "hard" machine not only allowed study of the magnitude of the yield-point drop but also revealed a new phenomenon—secondary yielding of the martensite introduced by stopping crosshead motion after plastic deformation of the sample had begun. The present paper is a report of these findings. MATERIALS AND PROCESSING The material used was a commercial 4340 steel of the composition shown below: 0.41 0.80 0.013 0.019 0.31 0.85 1.76 0.28 1 0.42 0.77 0.015 0.024 0.30 0.84 1.69 0.28 0.08 2 1 = Ladle analysis. 2 = Laboratory analysis. Bars of this steel were processed in the following way: 1) machined to predetermined diameters; 2) austenitized at 870°C for 1 1/2 hr; 3) oil-quenched; 4) cooled to -115°C for 1/2 hr; onset and increase in magnitude of the secondary yielding in this temperature region have been found to fit the relationship ?Ys = Atn where ?Ys is the magnitude of the secondary yield Point in psi, t is the time in seconds, and A and n are parameter characteris-tics of the material. Although the occurrence of the primary and secondary yield points could be rationalized qualitatively on the basis of stress-induced ordering of carbon atoms in the stress fields of dislocations, as postulated in an earlier paper, the kinetics of the secondary-yield-point development were interpreted to indicate that the ordering involves more than just single jumps of carbon atoms from high-energy to neighboring low-energy sites. 5) pickled and lime-coated; 6) drawn through a carbide die. The predetermined diameters were chosen so that drawing through the same die gave the various reductions desired. Tensile specimens of 0.252 in. diam with a 1 1/4 in. gage length were then prepared from the drawn bars and tested. In order to study the stress-strain behavior at the yield point in detail, a rigid tensile machine with a high spring constant was constructed. Columns of large cross section (relative to the specimen cross section) constituted the machine frame. A dc motor was used to drive a screw via a gear reducing train and a "crane" thrust bearing. In this relatively simple device small deformations could be observed un-blurred by the slow response and lower spring constant inherent in hydraulic machines.' A strain-gage dynamometer permitted load changes as small as 8 lb to be read. RESULTS Tensile test samples machined from bars in the as-quenched condition with no subsequent drawing and samples from bars with 3.8 pct reduction after quenching gave stress-strain curves typified by those shown in Figs. I and 2. The time lapse between predrawing and tensile testing varied but usually ranged between 3 to 6 days at room temperature. The strain rate during testing was 0.003 in. per in. per min. The as-quenched curve is seen to have a broad serrated maximum whereas the stress on the specimen prestrained 3.8 pct rose linearly to point A, Fig. 2, fell abruptly to B, and then gradually to C. The abrupt drop to B was accompanied by evidence of incipient necking. The drop of the stress at the yield point in the prestrained samples (A to B in Fig. 2) changed with the percent prestrain, as illustrated on Fig. 3. Although the tensile strength increased continuously with the amount of previous cold drawing, the magnitude of the yield point drop first increased—up to about 6 pct prior reduction—and then decreased. Specimens from bars predrawn more than 8 pct broke in a brittle fashion in the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve.

The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation. In 1981, the production of sand and gravel totaled 755 million tons valued at $2.3 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 110 million tons, together with Alaska, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm (3 ½ -in.) maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15-20% water, 7-14% cement, and 66-78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman, 1956). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.003 in.), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Except for the addition of mineral filler, sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement concrete aggregate. General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. IN 1914 the writer and K. L. Kithil announced, through Bulletin 70 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, that the United States possessed the largest deposits of radium-bearing ore in the world. At that time a small amount of this ore was being, mined and shipped to Europe, and one company was preparing to start the extraction and recovery of radium in this country. The importance of our carnotite deposits in Colorado and Utah up to the publication of Bulletin 70 was not, however, appreciated by anyone.. At that time the total supply of radium in the world was about 10 g., calculated as element, and when I estimated that at least 100 g. of radium element, and probably 200 g., would be produced from our carnotite deposits, there was a considerable amount of skepticism. Up to the present time almost 200 g. have come from this ore, and some writers put this figure a little higher. Uranium ore was found in the copper mines of the Union Minière du Haut-Katanga at Luiswishi in 1913. Later discoveries were made at other places in the Belgian Congo, and the Katanga ores now represent the largest supply of radium-bearing ore in the world. In fact, since 1923 very little radium has been produced from American carnotite, the Katanga ore representing practically the world's supply of. radium since that date.

The South Texas area, discussed herein, represents districts 2 and 4 of the Texas Railroad Cominission and extends from Jackson, Lavaca, and Gonzales Counties on the northeast to the Rio Grande River, comprising a total of 26 counties.$ The present boundaries of this district do not coincide with those of earlier reports published in the annual volumes of Petroleum Development and Technology. The war, in its various ramifications, determined and controlled all the phases of the oil and gas industry. Priorities for material and governmental subsidies determined all new operations. New Pools In our opinion, the combine' quantity of crude and distillate reserves added in '943 approached Or possibly exceeded the amount produced. Thirty-five new pools were added to the area' Of these, five have significant reserves and ten offer possibilities of containing consequential reserves. The largest proven reserve discovered during the year was the Slick pool, on the DeWitt-Goliad County line. This is also the most important Wilcox discovery to date in the area. The most significant extension was at Willimar, Willacy County. Other important extensions were developed at Agua Dulce, Seeligson, and Odem. Except for the Porter field, in Karnes County, the Laredo trend, which produces lrom the Jackson and Yegua, proved very disappointing, and this pool is o:C secondary importance. The Scott and Hopper pool, Brooks County, has only orie well, but offers excellent possibilities of becoming an important discovery. It represents at this time the major Frio discovery of the year. The Hobson pool, Karnes County, is not a major reserve, but can be classed as important in that it produces at a shallow depth from the Wilcox. This proves that the potential area of production for this zone occupies a broad trend. Gas and Condensate During the year construction was begun on only one recycling plant, this being in the Sejita field, Duval County. Several others were colltemplated, but no actual operations were begun. The most important development in recycling was the rebuilding of old plants to allow for the fractiona-tion of isopentane, n-butane, isobutane, and propane. Heretofore all pentanes plus have been marketed as cLdistillate,n only a minor portion of the butanes being isolated and sold for fuel purposes. All these new the except propane, are considered vital to the war effort and propane is being marketed as fuel gas. In other instances propane is being isolated and then pumped back into the gas reservoirs for storage. It is anticipated that the demands for this product will increase in the future. Kermac Potash Co., the newest American entry in a rapidly expanding industry, has come on the scene with notable variations in conventional shaft-sinking and mining techniques. Located in the famed potash producing district east of Carlsbad, N. Mex., Kermac started up its mine in November, 1965, to supply ore to the company's 500,000-tpy potash crystallization refinery. In so doing, the company (1) drilled the first large diameter mine shaft in the potash industry and (2) has employed new continuous miners especially adapted for use in thin potash beds. REACHING THE ORE ZONE In its initial mine planning, Kermac, a partnership owned jointly by Kerr-McGee Corp. and the National Farmers Union Development Corp., considered it imperative that the shafts be sunk and equipped as soon as possible and that the mine be developed sufficiently to insure a constant ore feed to the mill when the unit was placed on stream. After examining the alternative sinking techniques available to it, the company decided to accept a proposal by Big Hole Drillers, Inc., to drill the shaft from the surface through various formations of sandstones, siltstone, shales, anhydrite, limestones, dolomite and salts to the potash ore zone.
