The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

This report describes the construction and calibration of two ice calorimeters and includes results of high-temperature heat-content measurements, made by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on rubidium fluoride, hafnium tetrafluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide. The heats and entropies of fusion of rubidium fluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide have been calculated at their respective melting points using equations derived from the experimental heat-content data. Hafnium tetrafluoride did not melt within the range of temperatures investigated. Heat and entropy of transition of cesium chloride from the alpha to the beta form were also determined. INTRODUCTION Free-energy data usually afford the cheapest and quickest means of determining the feasibility of experimentally untested reactions. For known reactions, free-energy data show the variation of the equilibrium constant with temperature and make it possible to calculate, without experiment, the maximum ratio of product to raw material for a given chemical process.

Daw Mill Colliery, UK Coal, near Coventry in England, mines the Warwickshire Thick Seam at 800 m/2500 ft depth using longwall retreat with gateroads supported by rockbolts. Over the last eight years the mine has worked longer and wider panels with extraction heights of over 5 m. Recently the mine has experienced high deformation conditions principally from the rib sides resulting in operational issues and production delays. Investigation of rib deformation was undertaken using new inspection and measurement techniques, including systematic laser surveying, and improved rib support consumables were developed and introduced. A new rib trussing system using textile webbing has proved very successful.. A rib support management system was also developed and introduced for face retreat. This allowed rib support to be more effectively managed both for production and safety. For the current developments, new 28-mm-diameter roof and rib bolt systems have been introduced and rib bolt length has been increased to 3 m, with the aim of achieving gateroad stability over the life of the panel. Significant reductions in roof and rib deformation have been confirmed by the latest monitoring results. These ground control innovations are allowing Daw Mill?s potential to be realised. Production from 302?s face in 2008 set new UK and European records. However the support enhancement process continues and further innovations are planned.

Soft to medium dense silty and clayey soils are found in many parts of India and conventional friction piles have normally been used for foundations of high rise buildings and other structures on such soils. The author investigated the use of Bored Compaction Piles and these have been used on these soils achieving substantial economies in cost over conventional friction piles. Similarly highly expansive clays, commonly known as Indian Black Cotton Soils occupy about 20 percent of the Indian land area. Short bored underreamed piles have been developed for such soils and a very large construction of various types of buildings and other structures have come up on such piles over the last thirty years in various parts of the country. The paper describes investigations leading to the design and development of both these type of foundations.

Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.

In metalliferous mining operations, subdrill is that portion of the blast hole that is drilled below the target grade elevation, and in most cases loaded with explosives. Its primary aim is to enable efficient excavation down to the target floor level. Subdrill is often described as being expensive and that excessive subdrill should be avoided, as it can result in damage to the subsequent floor, lead to difficult drilling conditions and higher vibration levels. As a result, many operations aim to apply the bare minimum amount of subdrill in order to excavate to the target floor. At a large open cut copper operation, challenging geological structure resulted in slabby and blocky fragmentation in the stemming region, resulting in poor crusher throughput due to bridging. To overcome the poor fragmentation in the top of the bench, longer than conventional subdrill was used to precondition the top third of the bench. The technique significantly improved the run of mine fragmentation and resulted in feed to the in-pit crushers that is more consistent, which produced less crusher downtime due to bridging. A new method of quantifying the energy in a blast has been created. Termed the linear powder factor, or energy factor, the calculation considers the energy contributed by the subdrill of the upper bench and its impact on the energy in the lower bench. The technique enables blast designs to be optimised to deliver finer fragmentation and more consistent blast outcomes. To support the layer of preconditioned rock at the top of the bench, an innovative new device was developed. The device is inserted into the drill collar immediately after drilling and remains in position throughout the subsequent steps of hole depth measurement, priming, loading and removed prior to stemming. The device not only supports the broken rock at the top of the bench, but also minimises the amount of drill cuttings that fall back into the hole. Furthermore, the device helps protect the hole from damage by external factors such as weather events, drill tracks, vehicle tyres and movement around the collar during measurement and loading of the blast hole.

Automated vibration monitoring and web-based data distribution has proven itself on the largest single construction project ever undertaken in Finland. The excavation for the Kamppi Center Project in the center of Helsinki was completed in November of 2003 and involved the removal of over 200,000 m3 (260,000 yd3) of rock and over 1,700 individual blasts. A system was installed, incorporating 37 discrete monitoring points located throughout an underlying metro station, and other surrounding underground and surface facilities. After every blast, vibration data was automatically transferred from the monitoring network to a server database. Stakeholders were able to access and review vibration reports on a password-protected website within 90 seconds of each blast. This allowed engineers to verify that recorded levels were in compliance with established limits, before proceeding with subsequent blasts. The data was also imported into a semi-automated Scaled Distance tool for analysis using linear regression techniques. This was used to determine, and adjust for trends in blast-induced vibration.Copyright

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. Tests were conducted on six different rock types and the values of the fracture toughness obtained for each type are in close agreement with the results of the well recognised the chevron edged types. A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.

"In July of 2016 and June 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA submerged arc furnaces producing ferrochromium in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Subsequent thermodynamic calculations allowed for the quantification of the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag or alloy contributing to wear in the tap-hole area. Results from both wear profiling and thermodynamic calculations are reported here. IntroductionFerrochrome (FeCr) is an essential alloy in the production of stainless steel (Gasik, 2013). In 2017, 11.7 Mt of FeCr was produced (Pariser et al., 2018.). The main producers were China (39%), South Africa (29%), Kazakstan (12%), and India (8%).A number of grades of FeCr are available to producers of stainless steel, including high-carbon ferrochrome (HCFeCr) (Gasik, 2013). HCFeCr typically contains 60–70% Cr and 4–6% C (Basson and Daavittila, 2013). When the chromium content is lower (50–55% Cr) and the carbon content higher (6–8% C), it is referred to as charge chrome. Charge chrome is typically produced in South Africa due to the grades of ore available.FeCr is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and in open arc furnaces (Mc Dougall, 2013) by carbothermic reduction of oxide raw materials. In a SAF the electrode tips are submerged in a porous charge mix. In FeCr production, the electrical energy is mainly liberated by resistive heating of the wet coke bed (Barker et al., 2007; Steenkamp et al., 2017). Thermally conductive lining design philosophies are typically applied in SAFs producing FeCr (Steenkamp, Denton, and Hayman, 2017; Coetzee, Duncanson, and Sylven, 2010; Coetzee et al., 2010).In July of 2016 and June of 2017, major tap-hole repairs were carried out during the annual shutdown of two 63 MVA SAFs producing FeCr in South Africa. The hot excavations of the tap-holes allowed for a study of the wear profiles. Both SAFs were operated on the same site, by two different operating crews, using the same raw materials. The major difference between them was that the SAF excavated in 2016 was an open SAF (referred to as Furnace A) and the one excavated in 2017 was a closed SAF (referred to as Furnace B). In an open SAF, a gap exists between the top of the steel shell and the roof, with the top of the burden being open to the atmosphere and the CO-rich off-gas being combusted as it escapes. In a closed SAF, the roof is attached to the steel shell and the CO-rich off-gas is collected from an offtake on the roof for further treatment and used in downstream processes.The paper presented here reports the macro-scale observations on refractory wear for the two SAFs, and studies the potential for chemical wear of refractory by slag and alloy as a potential contributing factor to the tap-hole wear observed."

Strata behavior and support performance were evaluated in a longwall tailgate test area at the Eagle Nest Mine near Van, WV. The mine operates in the Eagle coalbed which ranges in height from 4 to 6 ft (1.2 to 1.8 m) on the mine property. Rugged topography results in rapid changes in overburden which ranges from 200 to 1200 ft (61 to 366 m). The immediate roof at this mine transitions from sandstone to shale. In some areas the sandstone appears to be massive while in many locations it is highly laminated, fossilized, and interspersed with coal streaks. Horizontal stress levels appear to be sufficient to create instabilities in the roof in some locations, especially where the roof is thinly laminated. Traditionally, hardwood cribs have been used at the mine to provide secondary support for longwall tailgates; Strata Products' Hercules cribs are installed on 8 ft (2.4 m) centers staggered left and right in the tailgate entry. In a 250 ft (75 m) tailgate test area, however, cable bolts were installed in lieu of cribs. The bolts were 12 ft (3.6 m) long tensionable cables anchored with 5 ft (1.5 m) of resin. Four cables were installed across the entry and rows were spaced on 6 ft (1.8 m) centers. Primary roof support was maintained in the vicinity of the test area using 42 in (1.1 m), grade 60, No. 6 (19 mm diameter) resin bolts installed on 4 ft (1.2 m) centers through T-2 channels. The cable test area was located under a stream valley in an area of relatively shallow overburden. Strata instabilities consistently had been associated with the stream valley in both the Eagle and the overlying Powellton coalbeds. In an effort to further expose the cables to the most difficult stress conditions available at the time of the test, the specific site chosen was directly beneath a barrier pillar remaining in the upper Powellton mine (approximately 150 ft (45 m) of interburden separates the two coalbeds).

Compagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation. Tailings are stored in a ?fine? pond. Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment. However, direct cyanidation would require a too large installation, regarding the local conditions (accessibility, supplying and rainforest meteorological conditions). It has been then decided to test the feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation. Lab tests have been carried out by SGS Lakefield (Canada) in March 2007, which proves the technical feasibility. Therefore, CME asked Caspeo to: ? Carry out an on-site flotation pilot campaign. ? Design an industrial flotation circuit. The tailings reprocessing will contribute to a better tailings management and a dry up of the gold resource, limiting the risk of illegal mining after remediation of the CME site. CME MINE The Esperance gold mine is located in French Guyana, in the vicinity of several gold deposits as Omaï, Rosebel or Camp Caïman, holded by Iamgold and Newmont. These main gold deposits are located on the figure 1. Esperance was put into operation in the early 90?s. The first years were devoted to the mining of alluvial gold in the gravel of the Esperance Creek. Since then, operation was led in the primary gold deposit. Annual production is on average 254kg for a total production in fifteen years of 4300kg. Geology Esperance deposit is located in the greenstone belt of the Guyana Shield. Mineralization is in tectonic contact between sedimentary basin of Maroni and a granitic massif. Clastic series, composed of conglomerate and lamina sandstone, overlie a volcano-sedimentary basement (series called "Paramaca"). The area is strongly folded by shear movements, resulting from granite deposit. Gold is in interlacing quartz veins intersecting the clastic series. Gold is present in association with pyrite. Other elements, as silver or arsenic, are in negligible quantity. Exploitation The Maroni River is the only access to the Esperance mine. Only the saprolite and a part of the transition rock are extracted in the open pit. Excavation works are done using shovels Hyundai 450 (4 units) and haulage works using articulated dumpers Terex TA35 (4 units). These two sorts of equipments are presented figure 2. Mill The mill is composed of crushing and grinding processing plants. After gravity concentration, both plants produce tailings that are stored in two ponds: the first pond contains coarse product which segregates the particles crushed to 2mm upstream and settled clays downstream; the second pond contains the fine product made of particles ground to 200µm. These two ponds, bordered by dams and diversion canals, are located on former alluvial sites of Esperance Creek (see figure 3). [ ] The CME mill is currently producing gold concentrate, with a global recovery of about 67%. The ore is crushed by one jaw crusher and two hammer crushers. In the Piedmont, heavily loaded structures are generally supported by either drilled piers or one of several pile types. The choice of drilled piers or piles is typically one of comparative costs. The cost of a drilled pier foundation is usually the more difficult to predict because of the greater impact that variable conditions and construction monitoring have on cost. Poor specifications, related to the drilling equipment, procedures and bearing level, can also result in large cost extras. In the southern Piedmont, straight shafts are typically extended down to hard rock to achieve primary support in end-bearing: when bells are required, they are often constructed manually. In some eastern and northern Piedmont locations the thickness of the decompossed rock zone is significant and considerable skin friction can be mobilized. Typically piers are constructed in holes temporarily cased with steel liners. The bottom is cleaned of loose material and water, and then evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to confirm the design bearing pressure (and friction, where appropriate) or recommend alternative construction measures.

With IIT research institute as a cosponsor, this seventh mineral waste Utilization Symposium was funded by the Bureau of Mines through its Division of Mineral Resources Technology. Environmental scientists and engineers from five countries (Canada, Netherlands, Austria, England, Guatemala) besides the United States participated in the symposium, which was held Oct. 20-21, 1980, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. Of the 25 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial waste, and scrap metal, 21 are summarized herein.

The Bureau of Mines presents an economic evaluation of its leach- electrolysis process for recovering lead from galena concentrate. In this process, galena concentrate is leached at 200° F with a ferric chloride-brine solution to extract lead while leaving sulfur in the residue, which is discarded. The solution after leaching is concentrated and cooled to 100° F by vacuum evaporation to crystallize lead chloride from which metallic lead and chlorine are produced by fused-salt electrolysis. Chlorine is used to regenerate the spent leach solution before it is recycled. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of producing 300 tons per day of lead, 330 days per year. The fixed capital cost on a third-quarter 1977 basis Fs $27,500,000, and the estimated operating cost without a charge for the concentrate is 4.9 cents per pound of lead product. Assuming a selling price for corroding-grade lead of 31 cents per pound and a charge for the concentrate of $332 per ton, the interest rate of return on investment after taxes is 16 percent. The leach-electrolysis process, therefore, appears to be economically attractive under the assumed market conditions.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The island of Java lies within the Sunda-Banda magmatic arc, which is characterised by multiple phases of volcanic activity and extensive compressional deformation. Along this zone, significant gold and copper mineralisation occurs, including some of the world’s largest deposits. In West Java, epithermal gold mineralisation is typically located in a series of extensional and strike-slip faults that cut Miocene to Pliocene volcanic rocks. These are all low-sulfidation, epithermal, vein-stockwork-style deposits developed in Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanic rocks, which have been intruded by shallow-level plutons.This paper discusses an example of epithermal mineralisation at Mt Subang, West Java. Gold mineralisation was originally identified from stream sediment, panned concentrate and rock geochemistry sampling in the early 1990s. Geophysical surveys (magnetics and induced polarisation resistivity/chargeability), trenching, pitting and diamond hole drilling has subsequently revealed silicified-quartz vein epithermal gold mineralisation hosted within fault structures. It is clear that these structures acted as hydrothermal fluid pathways leading to the development of mineralised offshoots along north–south extensional and en-echelon arrays of north-east–south-west and transtensional faults. A number of vertical offshoots also occur in flexures and fault jogs. Post-mineral faulting has subsequently dissected and offset a number of the offshoots. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of structure and fault kinematics and displacement magnitudes is required in order to understand the geometry and continuity of mineralisation across major structures and maximise the resource potential. The purpose of this report is to describe the work accomplished by Mine Safety Appliances Company under Contract No. H0110845. This contract required the design, installation and testing of a permissible mine surveillance and communication system for the USBM Bruceton experimental mine facility. While much of the design and operational detail of this system can be drawn from the instruction manuals delivered with the equipment, some of it will be repeated here in Volume I for the sake of clarity, but the principal objective will be to report on overall system and subsystem performance and to suggest design alternatives for future consideration. Details of the overall system design will be found in Volume II of this report.

The impact of a mineral project in a developing country is evaluated in the broad context of its economy using input-output models. Minimum economic theory is used to develop simple numerical models. Sets of technical coefficients are exploited in the development of linear models of the productive element of an economy. The analysis allows assessment of the overall economic consequences of a mineral development in which issues broader in scope than financial objectives need to be incorporated in the evaluation. In part 1, the framework for the development of the input-output model is presented. The model is refined to incorporate country-specific behaviour. The increased flexibility of the enhanced semi-input-output model permits a more confident investigation of the economy-wide effects associated with a new project in the mineral sector of a developing country. The relevance of the models is illustrated using an example from Namibia
