Iron ore is AustraliaÆs largest commodity export and is vitally important to AustraliaÆs current and future prosperity. However, while major expansions are currently in progress to satisfy demand, the industry is also undergoing major transformations. Reserves of traditional high-grade Brockman ores that have underpinned the Australian iron ore industry since its inception are slowly being depleted and alternative ore types such as Marra Mamba bedded iron deposits, Yandi and Pannawonica channel iron deposits and magnetite deposits are now being developed. However, the impurity levels in some of these alternative ores are higher and they require blending and/or upgrading as well as an advanced knowledge of their downstream processing characteristics to facilitate cost-effective utilisation by overseas customers. The research challenge is to use advanced techniques for mineral exploration, ore characterisation, mineral beneficiation, agglomeration and sustainable processing to identify and develop innovative and breakthrough options for locating, unlocking and enhancing the value of AustraliaÆs iron ore resources. Furthermore, to sustain the steel industry and hence secure the demand for iron ore, there is a growing need to enhance the environmental and business performance of the industry through reductions in wastes and emissions. Therefore, cost-effective breakthrough and enabling technologies that massively cut waste generation, CO2 emissions and water consumption are also being developed. These include the use of renewable fuels and reductants, waste heat recovery and conversion of by-product slag into a saleable substitute for Portland cement. Ultrafine-grained surface layers were obtained by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) in copper and titanium samples. The thermal properties of the deformed layers were characterized using a scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) that allows thermal conductivity to be mapped down to the submicrometer scale. A theoretical approach, based on this investigation, was used to calculate the heat flow from the probe tip to the sample and then estimate the thermal conductivities at different scanning positions. Experimental results and theoretical calculation demonstrate that SThM can be used as a powerful tool for the thermal property and microstructural analysis of ultrafine-grained microstructures.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of lignite showed that ß,ß?-oxydipropionitrile, ß,ß?-iminodipropionitrile, and ß,ß'-thiodipropionitrile were effective solvents for extracting aromatics (aromatic hydrocarbons plus polar compounds) from coal-tar neutral distillate fractions. Batch extraction showed that these solvents extracted approximately the same percentage of aromatics from various neutral oil fractions boiling between approximately 170° and 350° C. In continuous countercurrent extractions using oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, approximately 30 to 35 vol.-pct, and 65 to 70 vol.-pct, of the aromatics in 170° to 350° C. neutral distillate oil were extracted at room temperature when solvent-to-oil ratios were 2:1 and 12:1, respectively. As the concentration of aromatics in the neutral distillate oil fraction decreased, the capacities and, to some extent, the selectivities of these solvents for the remaining aromatics decreased. Aromatics were isolated from the extracts and the solvents recovered by washing the extract fractions with a low-boiling paraffinic hydrocarbon such as heptane, using hydrocarbon-to-extract ratios of at least 2:1. The heptane wash removed most of the aromatics but only part of the polar compounds (compounds containing oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen) from the extracts. The recovered oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, containing polar compounds, were effective in extracting aromatics from neutral distillate oils. The contaminated solvents showed essentially the same capacities and selectivities as the pure solvents.

The Program of Mine Safety and Health Research described in this document reflects the continuing commitment of the Spokane and Pittsburgh Research Laboratories to focus on the most important areas where research can make a difference in reducing risk and improving safety and health for miners. It is the first program of work conducted since Congress mandated closure of the former U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the Department of the Interior and supported integration of the health and safety research function of the former USBM into the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Organizational changes made FY97 a challenging year of transition. Ongoing research was reviewed and revised to reflect the new, more limited, health and safety mandate of the research laboratories. The mining industry, mine worker representatives, and interested government agencies provided broad input to assure that the research performed would focus on the most critical safety and health problems confronting mining today and which are expected to be faced in the future. The two laboratories worked to evolve coordinated programs of safety and health research, each with a special focus. The work of the Spokane Research Laboratory is directed toward issues of special importance to the Western mining industry, particularly those safety hazards found in metal/nonmetal mining and surface mining. The work of the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory will continue to focus on Eastern mining, particularly underground coal mining. Traditional areas of expertise for understanding and preventing fires and explosions and for controlling the hazards of dust and noise will continue to reside in Pittsburgh. Each laboratory is developing new capabilities in the analysis of relevant safety and health information to assure that program priority-setting decisions are informed by the best available data. Recognizing the continuing importance of communicating the results of research to all who are capable of improving safety and health conditions in mining, each laboratory has developed an activity for information dissemination and coordination with stakeholders. In the midst of organizational self-examination and change, the research staff in Pittsburgh and Spokane have never wavered from their continuing commitment to conduct the highest quality scientific research-solution-oriented scientific work meant to reduce the risk of injury, disease, and death from occupational hazards in mining. The pages that follow give insight into some of the program activities and accomplishments from FY97. I hope you share my pride in the many accomplishments of the NIOSH mine safety and health research program during this year. This report comes at a time of increasing stability for the mine health and safety research program. The organizational changes in Spokane and Pittsburgh have been concluded, and NIOSH has succeeded in recruiting a new, permanent associate director for mining to lead this critically important national program. Congress has contributed to an optimistic future by providing expanded funding for NIOSH mining-related research for the next fiscal year. On a personal note, I greatly appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve as the NIOSH Acting Associate Director for Mining during this transitional year. The commitment and intelligence with which the mining research staff pursued their mission was matched by their patience and understanding in moving into a new organizational environment. All of us committed to improved safety and health for this Nation's miners owe them our respect and appreciation.

The vapor-phase section of the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., was operated for the first time in April 1949. The run lasted only 10 days because of time limitation (pending plant dedication in May) and the small amount of charging stock available. The primary purpose of the operation was to break in and determine the operability of the equipment and to supplement the operators' classroom training with actual practice by operating the plant under mild conditions. A secondary aim was to obtain data on the hydrogenation of petroleum oil and lignite tar distillate at approximately 10,000 p.s.i. while making gasoline and Diesel fuel oil. Although the operations were carried out under conditions considerably below those used in the plant design, a great deal of experience and data was obtained. As it is not feasible at this time to conduct further vapor-phase operations on similar stocks, this report has been prepared to present and summarize the data obtained through this operation.

Variogram analysis and kriging lack robustness in the presence of outliers and data with long-tailed distributions, which often arises when estimating grades in precious metal deposits. The capping technique, consisting of truncating the data to some top-cut grade, is widely used in order to mitigate the influence of the values in the upper tail of the distribution. However, this procedure omits part of the grade variability and is likely to provoke a bias in the estimates. To avoid these issues, a recently proposed approach is to decompose the grade of interest into three components (the truncated grade, a weighted indicator above the top-cut grade, and a zero-mean residual) and jointly estimate the truncated grade and the indicator by cokriging. This approach is attractive as it provides unbiased grade estimates, allows choosing the ?optimal? top-cut value, and essentially works with truncated and indicator data, thus avoiding the use of outlying values for calculating sample variograms and performing spatial interpolation. This work presents an application of this approach to a disseminated gold deposit that has been identified through exploration drilling. The effect of using an indicator covariate is assessed through leave-one-out cross-validation, by comparing the grade estimates with the true grades and with the grade estimates obtained with the conventional capping approach, which considers only the truncated grade as the variable of interest. As a result, cokriging the truncated grade and the indicator above top-cut grade outperforms the conventional capping approach, yielding significantly more accurate estimates. A few complementary guidelines are provided for validating the model hypotheses and for the implementation of cokriging.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with engineers from the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering, Montana Tech, Butte, MT, conducted tests to evaluate the tensile strength, fiber count, and adhesion of shotcrete applied to panels at the Chief Joseph Mine, a research and training facility operated by Montana Tech. The tests were conducted in the mine ramp 45 m (150 ft) inward from the access portal at a 15.25-m- (50-ft) long test area divided into five 3-m- (10-ft) long sections. The shotcrete was applied with an Aliva 240.5 machine fitted with a predampener. Different amounts of fiber were entrained for each panel. Background data for the tests were obtained from earlier tests in Nevada, where the typical amount of fiber in the shotcrete is 6.54 kg/m3 (11 lb/yd3). All shotcrete was applied to a minimum thickness of 76 mm (3 in). Cylindrical cores were drilled at the wall-rock interface, and adhesion was tested after 28 days of curing. The goal of this research is to reduce the need to install multiple supports at the advancing face by creating a safer mining system that limits the time miners are exposed to unprotected roof.

The entropy values at 298.1° K. for the elements and inorganic compounds, on which sufficient data were available for calculation in 1931, were discussed in a previous publication (96).3 Since that time the specific beats at low' temperatures of many more inorganic substances have been determined, and considerable advances have been made in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties. Moreover, a critical study of the existing vapor-pressure data made by the author (98) furnishes entropy of vaporization results suitable for obtaining approximate values of the entropies of a number of gases from the entropies of the solids or liquids. Consequently, it appears worth while at the present time to supplement the former publication, giving the new values now obtainable and making such revision in the older values as the data warrant. The methods of calculating entropies were discussed in previous publications (96, 98) and will not be repeated here. ENTROPIES AT 298.1° K. FOR INORGANIC SUBSTANCES In the following pages, the same arrangement is followed as in the previous publication (96). All entropy values are expressed in 15° gram-calories per degree Kelvin per gram-formula mass of substance. The figures given for gases do not include the effect of nuclear spin, as is nearly universally customary at present. The estimates of accuracy in the case of the values obtained from heat-capacity data apply only to the existing measurements and to the necessary extrapolations as they are made. It is assumed usually that the substances are in such an energy condition at the lowest temperatures reached in the specific-heat measurements that the usual normal type of extrapolation may be made. No allowance is made for error in this assumption. The recent work on Gd2SO4. 8H2O and FeC13 illustrates the difficulties that may arise in obtaining the entropies of some paramagnetic substances. Also the data and calculations for such substances as CO, H20, and N20 show that the correct entropy is not obtained in all cases by indiscriminate application of the usual

This bibliography was compiled by the Bureau of Mines as part of an investigation into the possible utilization of low-temperature coal-tar bases. The bibliography consists of literature and patent references from about 1945 to 1961 and is divided into the following headings: Analysis and Composition; Production, Synthesis, Reactions, and Utilization; and Separation, Purification, and Properties. Although over 1,000 references are included, no attempt was made to insure a comprehensive survey. The literature and patent references are arranged alphabetically by author or patentee. When several publications have the same author they are listed in reverse order of age, with the newest first. An author index is included because secondary authors are not cross-indexed. In almost every instance, the entry is accompanied by a Chemical Abstracts reference for those interested in locating an abstract of the original paper.

The Manapouri Power Station is New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility located on the South Island of New Zealand. Constructed in the 1960’s, it includes a 700 MW under-ground power station and a 9.8 km (6.1 mile), 9.2 m (30 ft) diameter tailrace tunnel. The output of the power station is currently limited due to excessive head losses in the tailrace tunnel. To remedy this situation, the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) retained Woodward-Clyde to design a second tailrace tunnel and appurtenant facilities and prepare Contract Documents for construction. The Project will involve the construction of a 9.8 km(6.1 miles), 10 m (33 ft) diameter, TBM-mined tunnel, hydraulic control structures at the upstream and downstream ends of the tunnel, an underground dewatering shaft and station, and tailrace channel improvements. This paper summarizes the key design and construction issues addressed during the planning and design phases, outlines the risk management provisions incorporated in the Contract, and overviews the Interactive Tender Process (ITP)that was implemented during the pre-tendering and tendering periods.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.4/ The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; and 1960, 5.5 feet.5/ Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by I-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, and 1960. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness -less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet - a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1960, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

Protective canopies for conventional electric face equipment, including shuttle cars, operating in low coal (less than 48 inches) were designed, fabricated, installed and evaluated on in-mine machines engaged in regular coal mining operations. This work was performed under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center. The canopies will support a vertical load of 18,000 pounds and provide protection against both roof falls and contact with the mine rib. Canopy configurations were established based on human engineering studies, full scale canopy mockups, and in-mine observation and consultation with mine and equipment manufacturing personnel. Overall height of each canopy is hydraulically adjustable between a minimum of 32 inches and a maximum of 40 inches. Canopy tops are open framework, welded structures, covered with expanded metal mesh. Structural members are 1 3/4-inch or 2-inch square tubing of AISI 413ON and ASTM A500 material, respectively. The canopy tops are typically supported by an understructure and upright post arrangement that is either integrated into the current operator platform or attached to the machine frame. The four upright corner posts house the hydraulic actuators. Canopy tops are elevated horizontally. Canopies are welded or bolted to the existing machines. Installation is accomplished with a minimal amount of interface modifications. No major machine design changes are required. Canopies were trial installed and load tested at the manufacturer's facility prior to installation on the in-mine machines. Canopies were installed on a Joy 14BU10 Loader, 16RB-3AH Cutter, and two 21SC Shuttle Cars, and a Galis 300 Roof Drill and 460-S Face Drill. Canopy installations were evaluated in the Jewell Ridge Coal Company No. 12 and Big Creek Tiller Mines. Operational time accumulated on the installations during evaluation ranged from 1 week to 14 weeks of two-shift operation. All five canopy designs, manufacture, and test were successfully accomplished. The five canopies met all safety requirements. Three of the five canopies were deemed to be completely successful from an operator's point of view. That is, mine management as well as the machine operator found that the canopies did not impede the operation of the machines to function with the same efficiency as before the installation of the canopies. The loader canopy, in fact, appeared to have provided a mole efficient operation of the loader by providing added safety to the operator from rib contact thus allowing him to concentrate more fully on the loading function. Operational problems were encountered with the shuttle car and the roof drill. The shuttle car canopy obstructed visibility to an objectionable amount and the roof drill canopy impeded maneuverability of the machine, more than doubling the roof bolting time.

Abstract The process of stress-induced fracturing around underground excavations in brittle rock is associated with dilation or volume increase of the failed, fractured rock. Different attempts to account analytically for this dilation have been made within the framework of plasticity theory. This theory has been developed mostly for metals, strain-hardening materials or soils, but brittle failure of rock-like materials is characterized by strain-softening behaviour and the volume change is dominated by geometric factors, which may violate stability principles of plasticity. In this work a semi-empirical Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) was developed, using as starting concepts: dilation angle, plastic strain rates, effective deformation modulus, effective Poisson's ratio, Griffith locus, and the definition of a bulking factor BF introduced by Kaiser et al. (1996). The model was calibrated in order to obtain bulking factors that are consistent with experimental data and case studies of measured bulking around underground excavations. Résumé La fracturation provoquée par le stress autour des excavations souterraines dans le minéral friable est associée à la dilatation ou à l’augmentation du volume de la roche en rupture. Dans le cadre de la théorie de la plasticité, différents essais ont été faits dans le but de trouver une justification analytique pour cette dilatation. Cette théorie a d’abord été élaborée pour les métaux, les matériaux ou les sols d’écrouissage, mais la rupture fragile de matériaux d’aspect rocheux est caractérisée par un comportement d’amollissement et le changement de volume est dominé par des facteurs géométriques, ce qui pourrait ne pas être conforme aux principes de stabilité de la plasticité. Dans le présent ouvrage, un Modèle semi-empirique de masse rocheuse a été élaboré, dont les concepts initiaux sont les suivants : angle de dilatation, vitesse de fluage plastique, module effectif de déformation, coefficient effectif de Poisson, locus de Griffith, et la définition d’un facteur de foisonnement FF apportée par Kaiser et al. (1996). Le modèle a été calibré afin d’obtenir des facteurs de foisonnement qui soient conformes aux données expérimentales et aux études de cas sur le foisonnement mesuré autour des excavations souterraines. Verschiedene Versuche im Rahmen der Verformbarkeitstheorie haben versucht, diese Ausweitung analytisch festzustellen. Die Verformbarkeitstheorie wurde hauptsächlich für Metalle, kalthärtende Werkstoffe oder Böden entwickelt, da sprödes Versagen von Gestein ähnlichen Werkstoffen von kaltenhärtendem Materialverhalten gekennzeichtnet ist, und die Volumenveränderung von geometrischen Faktoren beherrscht wird, die die Stabilitätsprinzipien der Plastizität übertreten. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein halbempirisches Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) (Modell für das Aufgehen der Gesteinsmasse), entwickelt, für das die folgenden Anfangsprinzipien benutzt wurden: Ausweitungswinkel, plastische Fliessensätze, wirksames Verformungsmodul, leistungsfähiges Poissons Verhältnis, die Griffith Ortskurve und die Bestimmung eines Aufgehensfaktor BF1 der von Kaiser et al. The number of Native Americans presently working as mining engineers is extremely low-perhaps three in the entire US. At the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, it was felt that introducing high ability students to mining engineering at the high school level would encourage more to consider mining engineering as a career. New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, NM, has initiated a continuing summer college program for Native American high school students. The program, which began in the summer of 1980, is designed to introduce participants to college life, enrich their high school curricula, and expose them to the problems and challenges of a career in mining and related engineering fields. Students From reservations throughout New Mexico with a demonstrated aptitude for science and mathematics were encouraged to apply for admission. Preference was given to high school sophomores and juniors since it is hoped that students will want to return for a second year before graduating from high school and beginning university studies. The program seeks to impress upon the students the need fir Native Americans in the fields of seience and mineral engineering.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

This study reviews the sulfur and suliuric acid industries in Eastern United States with emphasis on patterns of consumption and marketing. Output of sulfur in the East is relatively small, and most of the area's sulfur requirements are met by gulf coast Frasch sulfur. Over the long ten recovered elemental sulfur from sour natural gas and petroleum may become the East's major source of sulfur. In 1958 sulfuric acid manufacture consumed over 80 percent of the area's sulfur requirements. The leading uses for sulfuric acid were the manufacture of superphosphates and chemicals. Over the years, unit requirements for sulfur and acid in many major markets have been reduced through improved technology, but new markets always have been developed to keep the industry vital and growing.

"Process control technology holds very significant potential benefits for many mineral and coal processing plants. The impact can be expected in terms of performance improvements (e.g. increased throughput, better quality control, higher availability), through reduced operating costs (e.g. lower reagent consumptions, manpower reductions) and in the form of intangibles (e.g. reduced vulnerability to manpower turnover, increased productivity in the user group). However, the installation of a process control system will represent considerable capital expenditure and will generate an operating cost. No management team would approve the funding for such a project without some reasonable measure(s) of the profitability of a proposed system. This paper describes a methodology for addressing the justification problem. Of particular interest is the approach to quantifying performance improvements, frequently found to be the predominant benefit of process control.INTROPUCTIONProcess control has become widely recognized as an essential component of any processing operation. It has direct impact on productivity, process efficiency and product marketability. The reported pay backs associated with successful installations underscore this observation. As a consequence, many operators who have little in the way of process automation are looking to initiate control projects, while those who currently enjoy some level of automation are looking to upgrade existing control systems (= process + instrumentation + hardware + software + operators + support). While the emphasis here would appear to be on retrofit process control projects, new plants, or those currently in the design stage, will usually find themselves in one of these categories shortly after startup 1."
