The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. The unaltered iron deposits, called taconite, contain approximately 30% iron and 50% SiO2. About 75% of the iron in taconite resides in the mineral magnetite, the remainder is largely in iron carbonate and several iron-silicate minerals.

An original application of ANSYS simulated the forming of the temperature field of a massive casting from ductile cast-iron during the application various methods of its cooling using chills. The numerical model managed to optimize more than one method of cooling but, in addition to that, provided serious results for the successive model of structural and chemical heterogeneity, and so it also contributes to influencing the pouring structure. The file containing the acquired results from both models brings new and, simultaneously, remarkable findings of causal relationships between the structural and chemical heterogeneity and the local solidification time in any point of the casting. The determined relations therefore enable the prediction of the face density of the spheroids of graphite in dependence on the local solidification time. The calculated temperature field of 500x500x1000 mm casting of ductile cast-iron with various methods of cooling has successfully been compared with temperatures obtained experimentally. The Bureau of Mines is endeavoring to reduce waste and increase efficiency in the production, refining, and utilization of petroleum . During the last few years the demand for petroleum and its products has increased so much more rapidly than the production that greater efficiency in utilization is now a matter of most serious importance . The Diesel engine, a comparatively new type of internal-combus- ' tion engine, is an important device for insuring more efficient utilization of petroleum and coal-tar products, for it consumes heavy liquid fuels such as can not be utilized in other types. Like the gas or the gasoline engine, it is revolutionary within its province. For some uses this engine is replacing gas and gasoline engines , but its most important duty will be to replace the wasteful consumption of fuel oil in steam engines. Not only will a wider use of the Diesel engine relieve the demand, but it will result in more power being obtained from the same consumption of fuel oils . In spite of these advantages, comparatively few Diesel engines are in use in the United States . In this report the author discusses recent developments in the design and construction of the Diesel engine, the fuels suitable for burning in it, and the uses to which it is particularly adapted .

Red Dog mine is the world's largest Zn producer. The deposit consists of sulphide ore zones in sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposits, and is characterized by the presence of multiple metals and multiple ore types. The objective of the case study is to characterize seven different minerals, Zn, Pb, Fe, Ba, sPb, Ag and TOC, within eight different rock types. Geostatistical models were constructed for each variable within the eight rock types, and subsequently assembled to give 40 realizations for six 25ft benches. The stepwise conditional transformation was used to account for the complex multivariate relations. In addition to reproducing the input data, histogram and variogram, the resulting models also respect multivariate relations locally and globally. This paper documents the methodology to construct these models. A thorough validation procedure was implemented. Comparisons with blasthole data show that the conditional simulations and the long-term models agree in expected value. The main advantages of the conditional simulations are (1) the explicit accounting of multivariate relations between the data in model construction, and (2) the ability to quantify variability and uncertainty at any scale. A small exercise comparing the profit from a kriged and a simulated model is also examined. Results show that the simulation approach showed a 3% increase in profit, relative to the conventional estimation approach.

As part of the Lake Fort Smith Water Supply Dam Enlargement project, located in northwest Arkansas, microtunneling methods were used to install two side-by-side,1.53m (60-in) inside-diameter steel pipes between the intake structure shaft and the lake. The 46.6 m- (153 ft-) and 41.7 m- (137 ft-) long tunnels were excavated in Pennsylvanian sedimentary bedrock ranging from coarse sandstone to siltstone and shale-like claystone. The intake tunnels were constructed 18.3 m (60 ft) below lake level from the dry shaft. Special installation methods and procedures described herein were used to complete the lake taps. Installation difficulties that caused minor delays are also reviewed. After the excavation of the Intake shaft was completed, the two lake taps were installed in approximately ten weeks with the same microtunneling machine.

More and more, general contractors, site supervisors, owner re p resentatives, or the owners themselves want to know details about proposed drill and blast operations at their site, in advance. We are seeing more contracts that re q u i re a blasting plan to be submitted in writing. The purpose of this session is to discuss items that you might want to include and address in a written blast plan, and some ideas about how to present them. This is not intended to be a complete list of items that could be included in a blast plan. Contracts may list specific items that need to be addressed. Only a few of the more common elements will be covered here. The bro a der purpose of this discussion is to get you thinking, about what you might want to include in your own “standard ” blast plan.

A few months ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a national energy bill. Designed to decrease the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, the bill earmarked several billion dollars to increase the use of U.S. coal reserves. The bill also modified permitting regulations to speed up development of the coal reserves located on federal land. Coal currently supplies more than half of the nation’s electricity needs. And as housing starts continue to in-crease and with the nation’s appetite for electronic gadgetry, the demand for energy in the United States will only go up. That means coal producers must expand production while at the same time containing costs so they can enjoy this period of improved coal prices.

"INTRODUCTION Of the phosphate rock deposits of the United States that are being exploited actively at present, the land-pebble area in Florida is the largest producer. In recent years the land-pebble district, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties, has produced about 80 per cent of the raw phosphate rock that has supplied the requirements of the several national industries based on this essential commodity.In the land-pebble deposits sizes finer than 16 to 22 mesh are below the commercial limit in phosphate content, and washing-plant practice has been directed to the recovery of the coarser material. Recently, more extensive control of the washery plan has resulted in the saving of additional amounts of phosphate, the loss of which had been considered unavoidable. However, strict requirements of the trade regarding the lowest acceptable grade of phosphate rock prevent the inclusion of more than a very small proportion of the low-grade phosphatic sands with the washery output of phosphate roe:. Further advances in practice resulting in larger recoveries of phosphate can only be effected by the application of processes that are based on other principles than merely a difference of particle size. Research is be conducted actively along these lines by the industry and by cooperating agencies.Flotation has been studied for several years by the International Agricultural Corporation and its allied company, the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining. Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a lab- oratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship, was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

Cross-belt samplers are designed to sample particulate material in processing plants, usually when there is no space to install a conventional linear falling stream sampler. Most of the available cross-belt samplers are mounted on the top of conveyor belts, and remove each increment from a loaded moving conveyor with a 360° rotation of an open faced cutter, in a plane perpendicular to the material flow. Despite the practicality of this equipment and the fact that it occupies very little space in the plant, cross-belt samplers are well known for collecting biased samples, especially due to the increment extraction error. Sampling consultants around the world tend to condemn this sampling equipment, claiming that it is incapable of collecting the fine material from the bottom part of the load, and, since the sampling probability is not uniform for all fragments and depends on its position in the stream, this kind of sampler generates biased samples and its use should be avoided. Furthermore, the greater the segregation effect between particles, the larger the bias. However, some plants, whose initial design did not plan for the installation of a falling stream sampler, must rely on cross-belt samples for process control and reconciliation. For the past years, sampling equipment manufacturers have been putting effort in modifying the cross-belt sampler design in order to comply with the principles of correct sampling. Changes to the cutter material, shape, position, speed and movement in relation to the material flow have been made, and are continually being tested for different types of ore with various chemical and physical characteristics. This paper presents the improvements made to a cross-belt sampler at a gold plant feed in Brazil and describes the tests performed until it was possible to validate the new sampling equipment for reconciliation purposes.CITATION:Chieregati, A C, Amaral Jr, E A and Souza, J C O, 2017. Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.

Have technological advancements in underground coal mining driven people's skills to new highs or have the expanded skills of mining people driven the industry's technological advancements. Who knows? What we do know is that both our technology and our people have made meaningful and significant advancements. Overall, longwall systems continue to increase productivity and retreat faster. Globally, gate road development is the primary bottleneck in a longwall mine. The primary bottleneck in gate road development is roofbolting. Generally, roofbolting is the bottleneck in room and pillar operations as well. This paper will present an integrated manufacturer's (Joy Mining Machinery) vision of the future in comparison to current equipment performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on roofbolter technologies.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

Ore and waste transports form an integral part of any mining operation and represents a substantial portion of the mine´s total operating cost. Mine layout, truck fleet and size, production rates, haulage distances, shift schedules, maintenance strategies etc. are all important and not at all static variables. They all change during the life of a mine and interact in a dynamic way. It is therefore essential for the successful mine management to constantly analyse and optimise the mine's transport systems. Önnerlöv has recently conducted a life-of-mine haulage simulation project for Zinkgruvan Mining, a medium sized, underground zinc producer, located approximately 60 kilometers south of Örebro, Sweden. The main objective of the project was to analyse and optimise the investments required to provide ore and waste haulage under changing conditions over an +10- years period: Deepening of the mine, increased production rates, changed mine layout, changed truck fleet etc. A large number of scenarios has been tested in the simulation model in order to identify the "lowest cost per ton" solution. This paper comprises an introduction of Zinkgruvan Mining and a brief background to the actual project, a description of the simulation model, project conclusions and some useful hands-on tips for mining engineers and project managers how to run a successful simulation project.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

It has been demonstrated that all the cadmium from spent batteries, typically 4 g per battery, can be recovered by burning polyvinyl chloride waste to yield hydrogen chloride; this reacts to produce volatile calcium chloride, which can then be condensed and collected in a separate reactor. Alternatively, chlorine may be used to chlorinate the cadmium with equal efficiency. There is also a prospect of using very low concentrations of these gases, less than 1%, to effect the separation. The Cd was recovered more quickly when exposed to sustained, controlled flow rates of chlorinating gases, whereas when PVC was burnt most of the gas was produced in a very short time, not allowing complete reaction. This problem can be overcome by recirculation of the gas into the reactor. The technology is efficient and clean and the equipment used is simple, enhancing the prospects for a pilot-scale version of the process

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.
