China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. ABSTRACT: In June 2001, a fatal rockburst affected a longwall face in the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL), France. Subsequently, a large operation of in situ stress measurements by overcoring was carried out with two main objectives: providing input data for the back analysis of the dynamic event and characterising the stress field in the next panels to be mined for identifying other potential high-risk zones. This paper makes a synthesis of the results of the overcoring tests performed and discusses those results in connection with the mining context, numerical model predictions, laboratory rock test results and microseismic activity. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Juni 2001 hat ein Bergschlag eine Kohlengrube des Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL, Lothringen, Frankreich) schwer beschädigt. Nach diesem Unfall sind Spannungsmessugen durch Überborung durchegeführt worden, mit zwei Hauptziele : 1/ Daten zu liefern für die Retro-analyse des dynamischen Gebirgsschlag und 2/ die Spannungen in den zukünftigen Ausbauen so gut wie möglich zu charakterisieren, um eventuele andere Risikozonen festzustellen. Dieser Artikel stellt eine Synthese der erzielten Ergebnisse vor. Er diskutiert diese Ergebnisse in Verbindung mit dem gesamten Kohlengruben Zusammenhang, mit den Ergebnissen von numerischen Modellierungen, mit der Labor-Charakterisierung und mit der microsismische Überwachung. Cet article présente une synthèse des résultats obtenus, et discute ces résultats en liaison avec le contexte d’exploitation, les résultats de modélisation numérique, de caractérisation en laboratoire et de surveillance microsismique. An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

The Impala No. 1A ventilation shaft is located approximately 15 kms north of Rustenburg and is accessed via the R510road from Rustenburg to Northam/Thabazimbi. This situation is shown on the location plan in Figure 1. The geology at the site consists of an upper layer of black turf of about 1 metre in thickness, grading into weathered norite. The depth of weathering is generally less than 5 metres. Zones of deeper weathering may occur along fracture zones associated with faults and dykes. Groundwater occurs mainly within the weathered/fractured aquifer system. The ventilation shaft is a 5.1 m diameter upcast shaft ,and forms part of a system of ventilation shafts to complement the existing infrastructure as mining progresses down the new twin decline extension of Impala 1 shaft. The principal reason for these shafts is to lessen the risk of an extended RAW and also to counter the effects of the heat build-up as the mining goes deeper, with the resultant effect that the existing cooling centre (fridge plant) becomes more remote from activities. The No. 1A shaft (upcast) is positioned approximately 1,2 km on down dip from the main shaft and the No. 1Bshaft (downcast) approximately 1,2 km further. Geological information was used from a borehole 1,2 km away on strike from the upcast shaft. The first shaft (1A) is a 5,1 m diameter hole to be fitted with two 2,2 MW fans, whilst the second shaft (1B) is 4,1 m diameter to accommodate a 7MW fridge plant.

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. The subject of optimal planning of level and raise spacing for inclined narrow reef deposits has received intermittent attention over the years because the subject matter is inherently complex. Previous work has approached the problem as simply that of simultaneously minimizing the total excavation and haulage cost associated with the development workings. However, when level and raise spacing are altered, other factors such as productivity are negatively affected, thus requiring a delicate trade-off of contradicting planning or optimization criteria. The paper concludes that the problem is actually of the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type, contrary to traditional thinking that the planning problem is achieved solely by minimizing waste development.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)1 and engineers from Placer Dome, Inc.2, conducted an underground rockfill span test at the Turquoise Ridge Mine near Golconda, Nevada, USA with the purpose of improving safety and increasing productivity by using a bulk mining method instead of drift and fill. A rockfill sill was constructed by mining and backfilling six adjacent, parallel drifts and then undercutting the sill with a 13.7 m (45 ft) wide and 30.5 m (100 ft) long room. Displacement measurements from vertical borehole extensometers installed in the mine roof and rockfill indicated that the sill remained stable with a maximum vertical deformation of less than 5 mm (0.2 in). These results were confirmed by visual observations and calculations from a validated three-dimensional numeric model of the sill. The numeric model was also used to simulate load on the sill produced by dislodged roof material in the shape of a 11.0 m- (36 ft-) high triangular prism with base measurements equal to those of the sill. Failure in the bottom third of the sill occurred with this additional load.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

The Michigan Dept. of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large-volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a rehtive aid in assessing rock strength is reported. These past several years have been a period of unprecendented construction and commercial expansion. Vast private manufacturing complexes and government road, power, and office projects are being built or are in planning stages. Nearly everywhere, municipalities are expanding outward and upward. Many towns are developing into cities and many cities are displaying new skylines, and the building boom shows little sign of slowing down.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

Ground freezing occupies a unique and important niche in underground construction, fulfilling a geotechnical need that is difficult, or sometimes impossible, to fulfill through other groundwater control and excavation support methods. Where complete groundwater cut-off and in-built ground support are required, and deep excavation is planned or the work occurs in difficult or disturbed ground, ground freezing offers the assurance critical to safe and timely construction. Compared with other groundwater cut-off or excavation support methods, a frozen wall is easily connected to underlying bedrock and will also adhere to adjoining subsurface installations or obstructions, if necessary, to provide a composite cutoff structure. Ground freezing is effective in all soil and ground conditions and has been used for emergency situations in disturbed, displaced or loose ground, where detailed soil characterization could not practically be performed.

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

This Bureau of Mines report presents a procedure for the design of an arch canopy for use in rehabilitating a high-roof-fall area. Only dy-namic line loading of an unbackfilled arch canopy at its crown is considered, and the procedure does not account for an asymmetrical loading condition. The evaluation of whether an arch canopy is suitable for a particular installation depends on many variables, including in-mine conditions and the engineering properties of the structure. However, a general evaluation can be based on a comparison of the arch's maximum crown deflection and a prescribed allowable crown deflection. The design procedure is based on the concept that when an arch canopy is sub-jected to impact loading at its crown and deflects from its unloaded state to maximum crown deflection, the structure absorbs strain energy, both elastic and plastic. As a result, this strain energy can be calculated from a static load-displacement diagram for the structure. The significance of this design procedure is that it gives mine personnel an analytical tool to select an arch canopy to meet the dimensional and functional requirements of a mine entry and a prescribed allowable crown deflection.
