All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

So far as is known , there is no complete bibliography on sampling, therefore , this one should be of value . In it are nearly eleven hundred references , some dating back 30 years , on sampling at mines , mills , smelters , power plants , pumping stations and refineries . For convenience , there are included a few references to methods for sampling such materials as leather belting in mills , salt impregnated soils , and mine waters . All the important technical journals , - including some in foreign countries- and engineering society publications , also mining and metallurgical text - books , have been studied for anything concerning sampling , and while it is not claimed that every important reference has been listed , the bibliography is fairly complete . The arrangement is alphabetical by authors ' names , and the references are numbered serially in the crder that they appear in the bibliography . Anonyous references are listed under the name of the journal in which they appear , and are numbered like the references bearing an author's name . Patents are grouped in their numerical order , without index nu.bers . Under the heading , " U.S. Bureau of Mines Publications " , are listed all publications of the bureau that deal with sampling . While the serial number is omitted , these same references , of course , have serial numbers where they appear in the list arranged alphabetically by authors .

Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬-based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X¬ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. Variographic analysis, a classical tool from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), can address practical situations with multiple variables; however, its application has very often been limited to one variable at a time. Recent developments have shown the benefits of using multivariate approaches for variographic characterisation of a set of variables instead of considering individual variables sequentially. Among these approaches, the multivariogram has been revealed itself to be a powerful tool when the overall time-variability of a process must be summarised in terms of a large set of properties (variables) to assess its true global variability. However, even when choosing the properties of interest carefully, the resulting global variance obtained with this approach may be very high. In particular, some variables that contribute to a major proportion of the global (multivariate) variability could be less important for the process performance than others having a lower variability. To address this issue, a new approach is proposed, combining the multivariogram with process modelling and multivariate data analysis methods such as partial least squares (PLS) regression from chemometrics. An example from the mineral processing industry is presented, for which the process performance could be linked to key process variables (sensor data) using the PLS regression. Once introduced in the multivariogram equation, PLS model parameters (loading-weights or regression coefficients) can be used to weigh the variables according to their relevance for the process. In addition, this also permits characterisation of process performance variability with time using only the process input variables and a weighted metric according to the PLS regression model. Ultimately, this method helps to find an optimised sampling procedure in terms of frequency, sampling mode and number of increments according to the actual overall process performance. Calculation of pile foundations should possibly truly reflect its real work, mainly with respect to the value and distribution of settlements, pile internal forces and bending moments within a slab. Many empirical and theoretical methods serving for an assessment of the settlements of pile group overestimate its actual values obtained from field measurements (see Tejchman et al., 2001). In the paper a simple engineering method for calculation of pile foundations is presented. The method takes into account the interaction between the slab and a soil together with the phenomenon of non-uniform deformation of the soil-pile subsoil, particularly under large foundations. In the method the scheme of the slab resting on one-parameter elastic subsoil is assumed. The comparison of the calculation results for existing pile foundation with the field measurements shows good agreement between those values.

The Flambeau and Ridgeway Mines, both owned and operated by wholly owned subsidiaries of Kennecott Minerals Company, were located very close to populated areas having initial concerns about health, safety and the environment. The success of both operations depended upon developing a framework of community support and enhancing sustainable development opportunities throughout the entire life cycle of the mining operations to address these concerns. The protection of the Flambeau River was the cornerstone of the Flambeau Mine’s success. The highest priority for the Ridgeway Mine was to ensure long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the reclaimed mine site. Both of these goals have been achieved and are discussed in this paper, which highlights Kennecott Minerals Company’s integration of sustainable development principles into its business decision-making and management processes.

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. Solvent extraction has recently been introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice for the production of a high grade uranium concentrate from El Sherana ore by a sulphuric acid leach and solvent extraction process. The solvent is a 5 per cent solution of tri(iso-octyl)amine in kerosene modified with 4 per cent of a long chain alcohol. The stripping reagent is a molar solution of sodium chloride.Preliminary testing for the development of the process showed that the leach liquor was quite amenable to the solvent extraction process and that the equilibrium and rate considerations of both the extraction and stripping steps were very favourable.The industrial plant contains four stages of extraction, three stages of chloride stripping and one stage of secondary carbonate stripping. An internal type of mixer-settler is used for the stagewise contact, the design being based on tests with model equipment.The performance and control of the industrial plant is satisfactory; 99·7 per cent of the uranium is recovered for a loss of 0·3 gallons of kerosene and 0· 4 pounds of amine per 1,000 gallons of liquor treated.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of El Sherana uranium ore from the South Alligator River valley commenced in April, 1959, and thereby introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice the unit operation of solvent extraction on an industrial scale. Although there are now some twelve mineral processing plants in the United States and Canada using solvent extraction, its application to the field of primary hydrometallurgy is quite new. Prior to 1956 none of these twelve plants was operating and hydrometallurgical application waslimited to the refining of comparatively high grade uranium compounds and fission products from nitrate and nitric acid solutions.

A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

In connection with its renewed study seeking solutions to problems created by release of acid water from bituminous coal mines, the Bureau of Mines recently surveyed reports already written on the subject. This publication is based on that search. The Problem Poor distribution of water is evident on an ordinary geographic map of the United States. The more abundant supplies of surface water appear to be centered in the northeast, the southeast, and the central humid areas of the country. It is in the midst of this abundant surface water, in the Ohio River Valley, that most of the bituminous coal is mined. Varied industry has located in the valley to use the coal and the river. The coal is a source of power and o raw material. The river provides transportation for raw and finished materials; equally important, it provides the water that is used for cooling and processing in manufacturing. It also serves as a vehicle for the disposal of waste.

This work is a continuation of a program of study of the measurement and correlation of fundamental thermodynamic data inaugurated several years ago by the United States Bureau of Mines. Previous bulletins in this series were concerned with (1) The Entropies of Inorganic Substances (66),3 (2) High-Temperature Specific-Heat Equations for Inorganic Substances (67), (3) The Free Energies of Vaporization and Vapor Pressures of Inorganic Substances (68), (4) Metal Carbonates-Correlations and Applications of Thermodynamic Properties (71), (5) Heats of Fusion of Inorganic Substances (69), and (6) A Revision of the Entropies of Inorganic Substances-1935 (70). The present bulletin has as its primary purpose the correlation of the thermodynamic properties of elementary sulphur and its inorganic compounds and the presentation, after careful consideration of all available information, of a self-consistent system of thermodynamic relationships for these substances. It is believed that such a set of relationships, concerning substances of such great metallurgical importance as sulphur, sulphur oxides, hydrogen sulphide, metal sulphides, and metal sulphates, is of considerable value in indicating directions of possibly profitable experimental work and in clarifying subjects of technical interest upon which direct experimental information is difficult and expensive to obtain. It cannot be doubted that many problems of technical importance that at the outset appear almost hopelessly complex or obscure either may be solved, if enough information is available, or the specific lacking information clearly indicated by the adoption of the thermodynamic viewpoint. This has been demonstrated many times in the work of the Metallurgical Division, Pacific Experiment Station, Berkeley, Calif. Even when only crude basic information is available, a semiquantitative picture often may be developed by thermodynamic means in which general trends and approximate limits of a proposed process or modification of practice may be clearly portrayed and thus used as guides in further considerations and experimentation.

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

The Bureau of Mines is testing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that will recover a portion of the water lost using conventional waste disposal methods and produce solids suitable for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong, stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen followed by further dewatering on a rotary screen. In field tests conducted in northern Florida, clay wastes containing a nominal 2.5 pct solids have been consolidated to greater than 20 pct solids. The rate at which PEO-treated material continues to dewater in a mine cut also was monitored. Preliminary results indicate that PEO--treated material will dewater to 30 pct solids in 140 days. Pretreatment of phosphatic clay waste with lime and H202 was shown to improve the dewatering technique for problem clay wastes.

This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Pierre Lassonde, president of Newmont Mining and resident of the World Gold Council. He is one of Canada’s leading gold analysts.

This investigation was prompted by the absence of a simple, accurate method to predict optimum second stage separation pressure in three stage separation operations. Three stage separation as used here includes two separators plus the stock tank. The first stage pressure is usually fixed by gas sales conditions and the third stage is at atmospheric pressure. Thus, the second stage pressure is the only one that may be varied in-discriminantly during production operations. No variations in temperature were considered in this study, even though it will vary among systems, for a change in temperature has little effect on the optimum pressure. Optimum pressures may be determined from flash calculations, but these are tedious unless a computer is available. An early attempt to develop a simpler method&apos; yielded an equation which gave the optimum pressure only as a function of initial and final pressure. Experience, however, confirms theoretical relationships which show that composition as well as pressure and temperature must be a factor. This indicates that the basic relationship should be an equation of the form, where P, is second stage pressure, P, is first stage pressure, A is a function of P. (stock-tank pressure) and the system composition, and n is a function of the number of stages and the system composition. Fig. 1 shows the basic variation of P2 with P for a fixed system composition. A series of such figures clearly showed the effect of composition. The peak of each curve reflects that second stage pressure at which the stock-tank recovery (gal/MMcf) residue gas is a maximum value. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CORRELATION Wellstreams having 17 different analyses, ranging from low gravity crude to condensate, were used to determine the effect of composition. Each wellstream was flashed through three stages to determine the optimum second stage pressure for each first stage pressure. Equilibrium vaporization ratios proposed by Latham and Campbell were used throughout. The heptane plus fraction, for simplicity, was assumed to have the properties of octane. The results were subjected to an empirical analysis in an attempt to develop a correlation- that would be (1) simple, (2) accurate, and (3) eliminate the need for any flash vaporization calculations. This analysis yielded two equations, one for wellstreams having a specific gravity greater than one (air = 1.0) and one for those less than one. Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria&apos;s future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty.
