Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. During the 1980’s, laboratories opened throughout the United States to serve the analysis needs of a rapidly growing asbestos abatement industry. The samples analyzed were either collected during the abatement of known asbestos-containing materials or were suspect asbestos-containing construction materials. Many asbestos analysts received minimal training and used analytical protocols that were industry specific. False positives (reporting a sample as containing asbestos when none is present) went unnoticed or had minor repercussions. The mindset of the industry was to err on the conservative side – it would be better to identify a non-asbestos fiber as asbestos than visa versa. With growing public awareness of the health hazards of asbestos, other materials began to be tested for asbestos content. Rock and ores began to be tested for naturally occurring asbestos by these laboratories using the same protocols or an in-house protocol. Analysts were given no additional training and accreditation, in most cases, it was not required. With no consistency in sample collection, testing protocol or expertise in analysis, significant discrepancies in final results can be expected. If we further complicate this scenario with misidentification of naturally occurring look-a-likes for asbestos, expensive false positives are likely. To avoid the repercussions of misidentification of naturally occurring chrysotile asbestos from look-a-like fibers in rock and ores, correct sampling and analysis protocols with more stringent scientific diagnostic criteria are needed.

This report describes the procedures and summarizes the results of an investigation of surface subsidence above caving blocks at the San Manuel mine, San Manuel, Ariz., in order to obtain quantitative information on subsidence and ground movement caused by mining large volumes of ore. This investigation is one part of an overall study of rock mechanics being undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Attention was given to the improvement of a rapid and precise method of surveying a large number of subsidence pins and cracks in the surface terrain. Photogrammetric methods were used as an adjunct to the triangulation subsidence surveying as well as in ordinary topographic work Maps of various kinds were prepared to show the results obtained. The computation of the survey notes was programed for an electronic digital computer at a saving of time and expense over the use of a desk calculator and trigonometric tables.

The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

A Bureau of Mines investigation identified no mineral deposits in the Lost Creek RARE II area. Sand and gravel has been mined from alluvial flood plain deposits just outside the RARE II boundary. An oil and gas lease application which includes the eastern portion of the RARE II area is pending. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate; but it could not compete with similar deposits in more favorable locations, or with cheaper substitutes such as volcanic cinders or sand and gravel which are available outside the study area closer to major markets. No indication of coal or geothermal energy resources was found. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Lost Creek RARE II area encompasses 8,300 acres (3,400 ha) of Lassen National Forest in north-central California, about 20 mi (30 km) north of Lassen Peak. The closest city is Redding, California, 50 air mi (80 km) southwest. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 89 passing near the western RARE II boundary (fig. 1). The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western margin of Hat Creek Rim adjacent to the eastern boundary of the area.

Free-standing supports are commonly used in coal mines in the USA, particularly when longwalling. A recent trend has been the development of prop supports. Prop supports have many advantages over bulky, crib-type secondary standing supports, particularly in regard to material handling and installation. The challenge in prop design has been to develop load capacities that can compete with crib type systems and to develop reliable (stable) yielding capability. This paper will focus on the design aspects of steel prop supports, specifically, and evaluate the various concepts that have been developed to provide easy height adjustment and sustainable stable yielding under load. The design and resulting improvement provided by recent support developments called the Quik Stik and Ball Buster are discussed in detail. Performance areas that still need improvement in the design and usage of free standing supports in general are identified and possible solutions outlined.

"Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."

In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

Numerous fatal/nonfatal accidents involving underground workers struck by powered machinery occur yearly, with continuous miners and roof bolters involved in the majority of these accidents. In an attempt to reduce these accidents, researchers at the the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted studies of operator interactions with the motions of continuous mining machines and roof bolter boom arms. These operators generally perform their tasks in close proximity to the equipment in confined workspaces, often employing awkward postures. Since experiments with human subjects using the actual equipment were not feasible due to safety concerns, researchers opted to conduct controlled experiments in laboratory settings. Utilizing motion capture technologies and computer simulations, the studies collected data on equipment and operator movement in a range of seam heights and working postures. This article details the results of these studies to examine operating speeds based on usage and seam height.

A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. The first test run on the pilot plant was carried out in February, 1962. After some modification a second test of longer duration was conducted in August, 1962. In the early days of underground coal mining, the use of explosives to break coal resulted in a large number of disastrous methane and coal dust explosions and consequential loss of life. Research by the British, French, US authorities, amongst others, introduced many practices that significantly reduced the occurrence of such incidences. The use of explosives designed to be safe in a methane atmosphere, plus the creation of a second free face were two such practices which became commonly used in coal mines all over the world including southern Africa. With its associated coal cutting equipment and labour, the cost of creating a second free face is significant and this, together with the constant drive to reduce mining costs in a competitive market, causes mine management to regularly question the need for the second free face. Also, the safety and nature of permitted explosives has changed considerably since the days of black powder and nitroglycerine-based explosives with the introduction of water-based explosives. In southern Africa mining regulations pertaining to the blasting of coal has its origins in British research which was largely done in the first half of the twentieth century. More recent research by the US Bureau of Mine has resulted in a deeper understanding of some of the mechanisms of methane ignition by explosives and suggests that some of the earlier regulations can be relaxed to a certain extent without compromising safety. This paper gives an overview of the original research done in Europe and the more recent work in the USA, to give mine management and regulatory authorities a deeper understanding of the important safety issues when using explosives in a methane atmosphere. It also suggests that blasting off the solid is no less safe than using a second free face providing certain safety procedures are followed.

Weightings and water inflows into longwall workings often occur together, giving rise to discussions on their relative genesis. Case histories are introduced which indicate that most water inflows are associated with heavy weightings. Resultant large releases of energy can lead to extensive vertical fractures, which can drain water from aquifers or other sources, such as separation accumulations, onto the face. Effectively control of water inflows in these cases depends on face support and weighting control.

Most of the papers designated as being within the topic of underground storage at this Symposium are concerned with aspects of radioactive waste isolation. Although this is, unquestionably, an important international application of underground storage, and one involving a considerable number of research investigations, the subject of underground storage is indeed much broader. Several major international conferences have been devoted exclusively to it. Applications include storage, under a range of temperatures and pressures, of oil and liquefied petroleum products, compressed air, heat, foodstuffs of various kinds, hazardous and 'nuisance' industrial by-products, and a variety of special applications, both civilian and military - some in use, others proposed. Storage may be in caverns excavated specifically for the purpose, exhausted mines may be adapted for storage or, in some cases, the material to be stored may be injected under pressure into the pore spaces of porous-permeable formations at depth. A variety of rock types and geological environments are used, e.g. excavations in salted or domal salt, where long-term creep closure of the openings is a concern; massive granite, where fluid loss through fissures may be important. Cavities may have spans of several tens of meters, and there is interest in achieving still larger excavations. As would be expected, this breadth of underground storage applications introduces a similarly broad range of questions in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The report will review these questions and recent developments in rock mechanics research, computational procedures, and design applications - and will also discuss the opportunities for a still greater range of applications of underground storage to current industrial and social problems.

More than a few discussions are taking place these days among management economists seeking a way out of the dilemma of lower productivity vs. higher labor costs. Most suggestions would be illegal under present antitrust laws. Otherwise interindustry cooperation could be used to divide up some of management's tasks. Or price structures might be tuned to the special machinery and skills of some plants. Both remedies would be under attack almost immediately. There is one other remedy that is getting lots of attention: some form of compromise between management and labor to phase out no longer needed work practices that unions insist shall be retained. Railroads are the national industry suffering the most from this disease, still known as "featherbedding," an epithet coined by the railroaders themselves.

The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.

This paper shares the experience of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) Field Surveillance Branch over the past few years in building relationships with Aboriginal communities. Our goal is to provide and encourage best practices that may benefit you and your organization and result in strong, mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on Aboriginal communities. Historical information provides insight that aids in establishing effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities. An important component is appreciation of the perspective of these communities, which is achieved through awareness training. The use of local Aboriginal resource people as part of the training is recommended. A plan that is supported by management and staff is essential and lays the foundation for successful relationships. However, the plan must be flexible enough to change as circumstances warrant. The concept of having local people in communities address local issues is essential. This ?grass roots? approach, combined with the goal of exceeding a community?s expectations with respect to addressing issues, will go a long way to establish trust and credibility. Measuring the effectiveness of this work is the final building block to complete the picture.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

A variety of commercial detonators (fuse type and electric instantaneous and delay types) were subjected to impact and thermal stimuli to determine initiation stimulus levels and the dominant parameters in resistance to initiation. In the impact trials the detonators were impacted along their length to find the most sensitive region; threshold initiation limits obtained for these regions ranged from 3.47 to 20.82 joules (2.6 to 15.4 ft-lb). The friction sensitivity of the explosive component was an important parameter in determining sensitivity; various construction features of nonexplosive components played a role as well. In the thermal sensitivity trials, the detonators were heated from ambient to 100° C at an average rate of about 1.0° C/min, and thereafter at 0.5° C/min until they exploded; the explosion temperatures observed ranged from 121° to 188° C. These temperatures correlated quite well with the reaction temperatures of certain characteristic explosive components used by different manufacturers. The data also indicated an effect of confinement on explosion temperatures of detonators.

The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

Ventilation monitoring and control in mines are becoming an integral part of day-to-day activity for maintaining health and safety of miners. The authors evaluate potential real-time monitoring solutions for detecting and reducing diesel particulatematter, mine fires, and dust in situ, and examined the state-of-the-art use of ventilation monitoring and control in underground mines for detecting and reducing air contaminants to acceptable regulatory limit. Authors review relevant documents, including research papers, trade publications, and manufacturers’ website-based information, to identify research gaps. The authors also evaluate contemporary sensors (airflow, gas, dust, silica), control system and software technologies, data transport systems, Industrial Internet of Things, ventilation network simulators, and control devices to identify potential health and safety research gaps. In this study, examples of some mines from Canada, Australia, and the USA are included where ventilation monitoring and controls have been applied. Overall, this review identifies multiple challenges and research gaps in applying mine monitoring and control systems that could be the focus of future research, offering potential improvements to miner safety and health and financial benefits.
