Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application for geological structures, has been criticized for reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division’s successful identification of lineaments associated with roof falls and highwall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions will allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect miner health and safety.

This Bureau of Mines report describes calcination of kaolinitic clay in a direct-fired 2-1/2- by 24-ft rotary kiln at 750° and 775° C. Methods for preparing kaolin feed materials and characterization of calcined products are discussed. Approximately 99 pct of the alumina in a typical eastern Georgia kaolin was soluble in HC1 after calcination at either 750° or 775° C.

THE problem of scrap is probably of greater importance inn the production of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys than is the case for base metals and alloys. Remelting of gold and silver scrap in the shop is always a costly process because it involves losses by oxidation of the base metals in the alloy with a consequent increase in the percentage of precious metal. This is most marked in the case of alloys containing the low-boiling and easily oxidized metals zinc and cadmium. Since it is. not generally feasible to assay every shop remelt it follows that the possibilities of lost values are large. So-called rolled gold and silver plate is made by soldering or welding the precious metal alloys onto base, metal. Such plate when defective must be sent to the refinery to recover the gold and silver values, thereby involving additional expense in the form of refining charges. It is obvious therefore that gold and silver alloy scrap is an important item in manufacturing cost and must be reduced to a minimum. The amount of scrap resulting from poor metal will depend on a number of factors in the manufacturing operations, not least among which is the melting and casting practice. The notes which follow are a summary of experiments performed at various times to determine what variables in melting and casting are influential in the production of sound alloys.

At Tokushima Plant of Nippon Denko Co., Ltd. high-carbon ferromanganese is produced by the electric furnace method using lump manganese ores and sintered manganese ores manufactured from fine manganese ores. However, the distribution of manganese ores is significantly uneven on earth, and their characteristics considerably vary by ore type. It is known from experience that the production of high-carbon ferromanganese by the electric furnace method depends greatly on material ores. Therefore, to maintain stable operation in the electric furnace-smelting field, it is important to identify the characteristics of each type of material ores in advance. Thus, we evaluated the high-temperature electric characteristics of manganese ores using the electrical conductivity measuring system developed by ourselves and provided the standards for determining ores and blending ratio necessary for stable operation of the electric furnace based on the evaluation results. This time we worked for optimisation of the high-temperature electric characteristics of sintered manganese ores through modification of the characteristics because the blending ratio of sintered manganese ores in the electric furnace is high. The electrical conductivity of sintered ores having various chemical components in a high-temperature region (up to 1 550°C) was measured using our electrical conductivity measuring system and high-temperature electric characteristics evaluating method reported at INFACON 9. As the result of the measurement, we revealed that the high-temperature electric characteristics of the sintered ores depend on their chemical contents and the sintered ores can be modified to those having excellent high-temperature electric characteristics by controlling their chemical contents, so that the resources can be effectively used.

This paper presents a correlation of acoustic emission (A.E.) with physical and mechanical properties of different types of rock and coal specimens which were tested under aegis of a consultancy project from a Columbian Mining Company. In this study, three types of rocks which are sandstone (Arneisca), siltstone (Arciolita) and claystone (Limolita) and two different types of coal were tested. The tests were carried out under constant loading rates according to ASTM Standards for determining Young?s Modulus and Poisson?s Ratio. In both cases a MTS electro-hydraulic loading system was used. Mode of failure in each material was characterized by the acoustic emission and the results were substantiated by the deformation characteristics of the materials during failure.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (Tm of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus Tm data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCl and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO2 , as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %0 and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4%0. Calculated d18Owater values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from 2.0 to -5.7%0, with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

Traditional simulations of mineral processing circuits are solved by straightforward numerical techniques which require iteration to accommodate recirculating loads. Depending on the complexity of the simulated circuit, this solution technique can be inexact, computationally intensive, and potentially unstable. In this communication, an alternate calculation approach is presented, wherein an exact analytical solution is determined as a function of the individual units? separation probabilities. All the stream data, including recirculating loads, may be solved simultaneously, negating the need for iteration. Furthermore, with an analytical solution available, circuit analysis may then be utilized to diagnose the relative separation potential of the circuit. By integrating these tools, the authors have developed a software package for evaluating circuit configurations. This paper presents the theory, development, and limitations of the software?s methodology along with industrial examples which highlight the tool?s applicability to industrial circuits.

"The new third Bridge over Narmada River at Bharuch which was recently completed is characterized by some aesthetically appealing elevations of the pylon and large size of the deck. This paper gives an insight to design and construction technique adopted for foundation construction of Extra-dosed span - 3 rd Narmada Bridge at Bharuch over river Narmada, Gujarat. Site being located in intertidal zone had its unique geological characteristics and own set of difficulties during construction.INTRODUCTIONThe Indian subcontinent offers diverse subsoil conditions. With current modern and future trend of long span bridges the substructure design often demands large size foundations. The foundation of theses bridges are usually deep and large in size. The execution of such foundations in maritime environments often involves important temporary works, in order to provide a safe workplace, comply with environmental requirements and achieve high quality standards.Often Pile foundations are preferred solution now a days, but due to various statutory and environmental regulations their construction poses a challenge. With better equipment and corresponding quality control, construction of large diameter pile foundation has emerged as a faster and reliable option.OVER VIEW OF THE PROJECTThe first two lane bridge on NH-8 (Vadodra – Mumbai) known as Sardar Bridge was constructed in 1977, subsequently an additional two lane bridge was constructed in 1999-2000, 29 m downstream of the first. In view of rising volume of traffic and as part of upgradation of NH8, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed to construct 3rd new 4 Lane Bridge 100 m downstream of 2nd Narmada Bridge, based on Central Water and Power research Institute (CWPRS) study and recommendation.The general layout (fig. 1) of the 3rd Narmada bridge has 8 spans of 144 m and 2 spans of 96 m with total length of 1344 m, supported by132 nos. of 1.5 m diameter piles of about 50 m depth. The substructure has leaning “Y” shaped lower pylon of height 30 m together with cast in situ pier diaphragm. The piles are of M40 and superstructure & pylon of M50 grade of concrete."

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Cathodoluminescence microscopy (CLM) is uniquely applicable to the study of carbonatite-related fluorspar ore deposits. The mineralogy of the carbonatites, sodic and potassic fenites, marbles, quartzites, and fluorite ores are readily determined and characterized. Calcite, dolomite, apatite, fluorite were deposited dominantly under high temperature conditions and they exhibit strong cathodoluminescence (CL). Three types of carbonatites have been recognized at the Okorusu, Namibia carbonatite complex and fluorspar mines by field mapping and laboratory CLM. The main carbonatite intrusion is fine grained and consists mainly of calcite. A later phase of pegmatitic carbonatite consists of calcite, magnetite, Fe-rich pyroxene, apatite, and pyrochlore. Pyroxene carbonatites were recognized mainly through their study by CLM.

Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

An investigation has been carried on samples of three Queensland coal dusts to determine the potential explosibility of dust-gas mixtures. The explosion potential of the samples was classified by the lean and rich limits of explosibility and the limiting oxygen concentrations for each sample. Plotting of these points showed 2-dimensional flammability limit surfaces for coal dust/oxygen, methane/oxygen and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots the 3-dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the mixtures were defined. The explosion limits of the coal dust/methane/oxygen system were seen to be influenced most by the explosibility characteristics of coal dust. Methane exerted a stronger influence over the explosion limits when the coal had a low volatile content

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. This paper describes a proposal to reopen the Sylvia gold mine for underground exploration and development for an initial production of 10 000 tpa. A combination of trackless mining equipment and railtrack would be utilised for development with ore extraction being carried out by undercut and fill methods. The use of the smallest LHD units for mucking, and rail track for the main haulage together with airleg drilling will form the basis for development and stoping. The proposal has been subjected to an environmental impact assessment report to evaluate the impacts of the proposal on the natural and social environment in the area.

Mines and plants for sale, downsizing, bankruptcies, consolidation, slab imports, minimill growth displacing traditional integrated steel-making. These are some issues for North American iron ore and integrated steel producers. But the blast furnace still remains the workhorse of the ironmaking industry. And direct reduction and other alternate ironmaking technologies have yet to make any serious inroads in North America. How come? This article addresses the current state of primary ironmaking in the changing North American steel industry, the direct reduction market and new technologies under development that may hold some promise.

"The Gal/an alloy has been developed for continuous galvanizing of steel. The choice of the eutectic zinc-aluminum alloy with addition of misch metal gives a coating with specific characteristics as far as structure, analysis, surface chemistry and surface morphology are concerned. The performance of the uncoated Galfan coating is superior when compared to conventional galvanized particularly for corrosion resistance and ductility. For coil coating applications, these two assets are of the utmost importance but in order to benefit from these two advantages, good paint adherence and high resistance to edge creep and blistering have to be obtained. Despite Galfan's unique features compared to other zinc based or aluminum zinc based coatings, existing pretreatments and painting conditions are used with only minor modifications in order to assure good adherence and edge creep resistance. With compatible processing, Galfan can outperform galvanized and Galvalume as a substrate for coil coating as is demonstrated with various test results.IntroductionThe technical and commercial development of Galfan, a 95% zinc-5% aluminum-0.1% lanthanum-cerium hot-dip coating for steel, has been rapid. From its identification as a promising coating in late 1980, it has evolved from a research product to a fully commercial product with over 100 000 metric tons of coated sheet produced to date, and another 90 000 tons, at minimum, scheduled for 1986. The great majority of tonnage produced to date has been coil coated for use in building panel , appliance, and similar applications. Much technical work has been done to determine the suitability of Galfan for these applications and the proper way of processing sheet for best results. The present state of knowledge is discussed in this paper, along with some recent applications which are given asexamples"

The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.
