"It has been suggested that the pre-concentration of ore underground can bring positive economic and environmental benefits to underground mining, particularly at extreme depth. The integration of mineral processing systems for coarse waste rejection and disposal into the underground mining environment has a substantial impact on the economics and operation of the mine. A case study for the integration of underground pre-concentration at Falconbridge’s Thayer Lindsley and Fraser Copper operations in Sudbury, Ontario is discussed, with particular focus on ore evaluation, system design, integration, and impacts on the operation. Conclusions as to the overall feasibility and potential impacts of underground pre-concentration are presented.INTRODUCTIONObjectivesA scoping investigation has been conducted for Falconbridge Ltd on the Fraser Copper Zone and Thayer Lindsley mines in order to develop a better understanding of the operations, and to do a preliminary evaluation of the potential for pre-concentration of the ore underground. The objective was to develop a conceptual design and evaluation of a pre-concentration system for each site. The results are to be used as the basis for a more detailed future study.Underground Pre-ConcentrationThe pre-concentration of ore to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of material transported to the processing plant is not a new concept and has been in practise at several mines including the American Zinc Company in Mascot Tennessee (Munro et al, 1982), the Sullivan Mine in British Columbia and presently at Xstrata’s Mt Isa lead-zinc mine in Australia, as well as at several PGM mines operating in the South African Bushveld. For each of these mines, a high degree of waste rejection was achieved at a coarse particle size with good metallurgical recoveries. The benefits arising from the surface pre-concentration of ore are well documented in the literature (McCullough et al, 1999; Miller et al, 1978; Munro et al, 1982; Schena et al, 1990; Sivamohan & Forssberg, 1991)."

The potential of uirought tungsten- and tantaluw-rich alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system was investigated for high-strength structural applications above 2500° F. Appreciable strengthening of tung-sten and tantalum—essentially attributable to solid-solzction effects—was obtained with binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys. Tensile strengths as high as 67,000 psi were achieved at 3000 OF. ThE quest for wrought structural materials which possess good strength properties at temperatures above 2000°F has led to a considerable research effort during the past decade. In addition to exploring the potential of various high-melting-point refractory metals (such as molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, and tungsten) for very high-temperature structural applications, alloy-development programs have been undertaken to achieve greater strengths than could be achieved with unalloyed refractory metals. The methods of strengthening refractory metal alloys have included both solid-solution and dispersion strengthening. General relationships among the relevant properties (melting point, recrystallization temperature, and high-temperature strength) of refractory metals indicate that the highest strengths at temperatures of 2500°F or higher would be obtained with tungsten-or tantalum-base alloys. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the high-temperature strength potential of solid-solution strengthened alloys based on the binary system W-Ta; to effect further strengthening, minor additions of molybdenum and columbium (at the 6 and 12 pct levels) were made. The portion of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb quaternary alloy system of interest is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The component metals—W, Ta, Mo, and Cb—have a bcc structure at all temperatures, and their binary systems are mutually completely soluble.' Complete solid solubility in the W-Ta-Mo and W-Ta-Cb alloy systems has been demonstrated,' and, therefore, it was expected that the quarternary alloys of the system would also exhibit complete solid solubility at all temperatures. In the virtual absence of contamination by interstitial elements, all the alloys would be truly solid-solution strengthened. Twenty specific compositions of this investigation included binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system as well as unalloyed tungsten and tantalum. The compositions are shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Consumable-electrode vacuum-arc melting with ac power was used to produce small laboratory-sized, cylindrically shaped ingots (1-1/4 in. in diameter and 2 to 3-1/2 in. long) of the twenty compositions. A furnace was specially constructed to melt as many as four electrode rods simultaneously into molds lined with tungsten or tantalum sheet. High-purity rods of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium were used for consumable electrodes; the diameter of each rod was determined by the desired weight percentage of the component metal in a given alloy. "The DepositsThere are two large deposits or groups of deposits of potash salts which, at the breaking cut of the great world war in 1913 and for several decades preceding, were practically the only commercial sources of supply for the entire world. In both cases the origin of the deposits was sea water, the potassium salts being deposited by desiccation, but there were modifying factors which were not entirely the same in both cases so that well defined and important differences exist in these deposits. The larger and better known group, called the Stassfurt Deposits, are in Germany in the region about or adjacent to Magdeburg and Halberstadt. The general character of these deposits and the methods for recovering potash from them have been frequently described, not only in technical publi¬cations, but in the non-technical propaganda long maintained by the Kali Syndikat, an organization founded on a ""cartel"" with the supervision and support of the late Imperial German Government.Less well known are the smaller though nevertheless extensive deposits in the neighborhood of Mulhouse in Upper Alsatia, which were also under the control of the Kali Syndikat at the breaking out of the war but have now passed to French control, with the reentrance of Alsace into the French Republic.The Alsatiaa deposits, while less extensive than the German deposits, are, nevertheless of great magnitude. They occupy a large part of the area between the Vosges Mountains and the River Rhine, from Col¬mar on the North to Mulhouse on the South. Indeed a few borings on the East bank of the Rhine indicate that the deposits may extend under the river and to some distance beyond Buggingen Linken, Baden, though it has not been Shown as yet that this extension is of commercial significance.As is well known, the Stassfurt potash occurs as potassium chloride or potassium sulphate or both salts, intimately mixed with salts of sodium, magnesium eau& calcium (lime) and contaminated with substances. insoluble in water such as ferric oxide, clay etc. The potash salts are segregated in more or less extensive 'pockets' throughout the salt mass, these segregations departing usually from the horizontal. But the main ""potash region"" is a stratum varying from 30 to 150 feet in thickness and at a depth requiring shafts 5000 feet."

THE zinc-smelting industry of the United States has grown very rapidly in recent years and bids fair to outrival that of all other countries in the future. On account of the geographical situation of the chief ore-supplies, the industry may be divided into two main groups, the eastern and the western. The eastern and older group includes the works of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia, which practically control their own ore-supply. The western group includes the works of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin and Indiana, which do not control their own ore-supply, but are compelled to buy the ore in the open market. It is for this reason that the western zinc-smelting industry has been undergoing continual changes since its inception 40 years ago. During the early discoveries of lead- and zinc-ore in the lead- and zinc-districts of Wisconsin and northern Illinois, the zinc-ore (sinithsonite or " bone " as the miner calls it) had no value and was considered waste; but later, when this ore was found in large quantities, it attracted the attention of metallurgists, which finally resulted, during the early sixties, in the building of the Matthiessen & Hegeler Zinc Works at LaSalle, Ill., the pioneer zinc-works of the West. A few years later, zinc-ore was discovered associated with the lead-ore in Jefferson county, southeastern Missouri, which started the industry at Carondelet or South St. Louis. Still later, the discoveries of zinc-ore in the lead-ore region, first' at Granby and then around Joplin, lead to the introduction of the industry in the southwest Missouri and Kansas districts. At first the development of the industry was slow, but it progressed steadily and it is now one of the leading metallurgical industries of the middle West.

"High quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold in Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), and Carbon-in-Column (CIC) circuits. Goldcorp’s Campbell complex at Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) experienced a period of low soluble gold (Au) recoveries during Q3 2013, during which time the processing plant saw higher than typical Au grades in the CIP tails solution stream. A technical review identified that the CIP circuit may be experiencing a carbon-fouling issue. To further understand the degree of fouling, and to troubleshoot the low recovery problem, samples of carbon were collected from the CIP, elution, acid wash, and regeneration circuits, and submitted for characterization test work. This paper summarizes the steps taken to remedy the carbon-fouling problem at RLGM resulting in increased overall Au recovery.Overview of Red Lake Gold MinesRed Lake Gold Mines is located approximately 450 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Ontario’s western boundary region.All mining is carried out through underground operations, utilizing overhand cut and fill, underhand cut and fill, and long-hole mining methods. Ore types include: silica-replaced carbonate veins with free milling gold, siliceous replacement-type mineralization (rich with arsenopyrite) marginal to veins, broad disseminated sulphide mineralization along major shears, and some minor sulphidized chemical sediment-hosted ore. The operation is supported by two milling complexes: Red Lake, and Campbell.Process DescriptionThe Campbell processing plant's main unit operations consist of grinding, gravity concentrating, flotation, autoclaving, leaching, carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon elution and reactivation, electro-winning, bullion smelting/refining and cyanide destruction, and concentrate handling. A schematic of the plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.BackgroundHigh quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold at many CIP/CIL/CIC processing plants. At RLGM, gold-bearing ore is milled and cyanide is added to leach the gold from the solids into solution. The dissolved gold then comes into contact with activated carbon, and adsorbs onto its highly porous surfaces. Gold is then recovered by separating the activated carbon from the main slurry for further refining. As such, the characteristics and quality of the activated carbon have a significant and direct impact on overall gold recovery."

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

"The Kerr-Addison mine is on the northeast shore of Larder Lake in the township of McGarry, District of Timiskaming, Ontario. It lies just south of the highway leading to the town of Kirkland Lake, 25 miles to the west.The property was first staked in the summer of 1906, by a party of prospectors led by a Dr. Reddick of Ottawa. Subsequent assessment work resulted in the erection of a 20-stamp mill in 1908. Gold from this mill was used in the first gold coins to be minted in Canada. The operation did not prove successful, however, and mining was suspended. In 1914 a consider-able amount of underground development was undertaken by the Associated Goldfields Co., without success.In 1936 Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Co. carried out large-scale sampling from four adits driven into the hillside at the mine. Results were not satisfactory, but it was decided to drill one last deep diamond drill hole from surface. The hole cut a wide section of gold ore. With this encouragement, further development outlined a large tonnage of ore, and a 500-ton mill was put into production in May, 1938. In 1939, its first full year, the mine produced 54,480 ounces of gold and 2,732 ounces of silver. By 1955 the mill had been expanded to a rate of 4,549 tons daily, and in this year 427,193 ounces of gold and 23,490 ounces of silver were produced.From 1938 to the end of 1955 the total production, from 17,473,797 tons milled, has been 3,607,462.74 ounces of gold (0.2064 ounces per ton), and 182,278.56 ounces of silver, with a total value of $131,073,037."

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

SUMMARY The productivity of drill and blast methods of mining in hard rock is limited by the cyclic nature of the operation, and a plateau of performance has been reached, even with the most advanced equipment developments. Higher mine operating costs and lower metal prices have more than ever generated the need for breaking through these productivity barriers. After initial field testing The Robbins Company has designed and manufactured, on a joint venture basis with Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., Australia, a prototype "Mobile Miner" for continuous cutting of hard rock. This paper describes the cutting concept, the initial application of a completed 1,156 m (3792 ft.) long 14% decline, actual performance and delay analysis, developmental modifications, anticipated performances of a fully developed machine, and possible future applications. "Abstract - The early Paleozoic accretionary tectonic regime that was established along the Laurentian margin of the Newfoundland Appalachians provided a favorable setting for shear-hosted gold mineralization along a major terrane suture, the Baie Verte-Brompton Line. The Stog’er Tight prospect is one of several mesothermal-style gold occurrences hosted by shear zones within accreted ophiolites and oceanic arc terranes on the Baie Verte Peninsula. It is an epigenetic, stratabound deposit that is confined to shallow-level gabbro sills within the volcanic cover sequence of the allochthonous Point Rousse ophiolite complex. Gold mineralization at Stog’er Tight is associated with hydrothermal mineral assemblages represented by chlorite-calcite, sericite-ankerite, red albitepyrite (±Au) and chlorite-magnetite alteration zones. Gold occurs with pyrite within the intensely altered gabbro, along the margins of syn- to late-shear, quartz-rich, replacement veins.The Stog’er Tight gabbro served as a rigid body conducive to shear deformation and fluid penetration, whereas, its high Fe-Ti oxide content induced fluid oxidation and gold-pyrite precipitation. Hydrothermal alteration involved progressive CO2, S, Na, and LILE metasomatism, along with significant enrichments in the REE, HFSE, and Th in the high-grade ore zone. Temperatures of vein formation and alteration are constrained by oxygen isotope thermometry to be between 250°C and 480°C. Isotopic compositions of vein quartz from the Stog’er Tight prospect are uniform (??O = +12.5 ± 1‰) and fall within the range cited for many shear-hosted, auriferous quartz veins.A U-Pb zircon igneous age of 483 +3/-2 Ma for the Stog’er Tight gabbro is consistent with its stratigraphic correlation with other Ordovician ophiolitic and volcanic arc/back-arc assemblages in Newfoundland. The U-Pb age of a rare variety of hydrothermal zircon recovered from the high-grade ore zone directly constrains the timing of gold mineralization to 420 ±5 Ma, in accord with a major orogenic episode of Silurian age that produced many of the magmatic and metamorphic rock suites in north-central Newfoundland. Our results are consistent with a post-peak metamorphic, late-magmatic model for gold mineralization that occurred during the waning stages of Silurian orogenesis, driven by emplacement of I-type granitoid intrusions into the crust."

The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews, the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

The last one decade in India had witnessed phenomenal growth in the coal, lignite, iron ore, limestone and many other minerals. To meet the production of minerals, the energy requirement is also very high both in terms of petroleum products and electrical energy. Because of spiralling prices of crude oil and also of the electrical energy, attempts have been made by various mining companies to select energy efficient mining machineries (in underground and surface) mines, together with energy efficient mining and mineral processing operations. Mineral sector of India is working seriously in tune with the Planning Commission stipulations to conserve energy.Apart from energy use (both electrical and fossil fuels) in mining, it is also significantly contributing to the cost of mineral processing depending on the quality of ore/rock being processed. Over the years a number of studies have been initiated and implemented to reduce cost of energy bill. An attempt has been made to present the various aspects of energy conservation, Impact of Energy Conservation Act 2001, Relevance of energy audit, areas of energy consumption and conservation efforts, etc in this paper. The paper also deals with some of the case studies to show how energy conservation programs has been implemented in the Indian mineral sector.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. Long tendon support systems provide several challenges when used in-cycle as part of the secondary or primary support cycle. A two-component pumpable resin, Carbothix, has been in development for use with self-drilling rock bolts, but many of the attributes of this new resin system make it ideal for grouting long tendon support systems. While neat Portland cement grouts or polyester resin capsules have been used with long tendon support systems for many years, two-component pumpable resin systems overcome many of the shortcomings in these systems. The two-component systems dramatically improve the set-time to enable mining face advance with fewer delays, enable longer pumping distances, improve quality control, and enhance load transfer mechanisms. This paper describes the key benefits associated with a new pumpable resin and details the Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum department atmospheric testing results and cable load testing completed by Minova personnel to date. It also details the results of the Australian mine site trials and the introduction of these systems into production use.
