"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. The rates of return on investment are examined for several major Canadian mining companies. Because we are dealing with a highly cyclical industry, subjected to widely fluctuating metal prices, rates of return are examined over a 20-year period. Conveniently, the first decade examined reflects the period when the industry enjoyed incentives to develop deposits; during the second decade, incentives were reduced and the industry became the most heavily taxed industry in Canada. The high rates of inflation since 1973 have distorted the real rates of return on investment if one considers replacement cost.

Guided by a vision and strategic roadmap, this approach is part way through a 5-year implementation period and is yielding encouraging business outcomes.

A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. Deformed and annealed single crystals of aluminium (9) and cadmium (10) first start to recrystallize along slip planes and in deformation twins.The present work deals with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformatjon by creep.Two factors enter into these experiments that were not met with in other work on this subject. The City of Portland’s Westside CSO Project is constructing a deep tunnel system to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) from entering the Willamette River. Several kilometers of microtunneled pipelines connect the existing system to the new tunnel. The alignments encountered a variety of ground conditions, including fill, manmade obstructions (wood, steel piles, debris), fine-grained to dense coarse-grained materials, cobbles and boulders, all below groundwater. "In copper percolation-leaching plants the ore is usually crushed to a maximum size of about three-eighths inch. Ordinarily an ore is crushed as finely as feasible since the rate of extraction of copper is increased with decreasing size of particles owing to the greater surface exposed and. the shorter path required for solutions to come into contact with the minerals to be dissolved. However, greater degree of crushing also increases the amount of fines. When ores are charged into leaching vats the coarse and fine material tend to segregate, resulting in channeling of solutions and leaving the areas where fines predominate only partly leached. An improvement in the method of charging the ore into vats that would minimize the deleterious effects of the segregations of fines would increase the percentage extraction of copper.The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.4 recently installed classifiers to remove the primary slimes from the ore, before charging it into the leaching vats. This necessitates a separate agitation treatment for the slimes.Recent publications5 of the bureau have shown the advantages of agglomeration followed by trickle leaching to extract copper from concentrator tailings. It was shown that when equal parts of ore crushed to about 1/4-inch size and concentrator tailings were agglomerated with approximately 10 per cent of moisture, either in the form of water or leaching solution, and the mass was charred into a leaching vat the ore could be treated successfully by open-drainage trickle leaching. Even with 30 or 35 per cent of minus 200-mesh material present the ore could be leached, if it was not flooded with solution.The results obtained in agglomerating ores and slimes suggested the possible advantages to be gained by wetting the crushed ore for standard percolation-leaching plants before charging it into the vats. Wetting the ore whould make the fine material and slime cohere to the larger pieces of ore thus tend to prevent segregation when the ore is charged into the vats. The bureau, at its southwest Experiment Station and in cooperation with the Department of Mining and University of Arizona, Tucson Ariz., therefore made a study to work: out A way in which slimes could be handled in percolation leaching. The study showed that the method of charging ore into the leaching vats governed the distribution the fines and consequently the rate extraction of copper. The results of the study reported in this paper."

In the interest of safety in underground coal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That doors used to control ventilation (a) Shall be installed in pairs to form air locks, (b) Shall be self-closing, (c) Shall not have latches or other devices for holding them open, (d) Shall be constructed and maintained to prevent excessive air leakage through or around them, (e) Shall be fire resistant. 2. That wherever practicable the use of doors shall be limited to development openings. The Mine Safety Board is of the opinion that the best practice in coal-mine ventilation makes use of a split system employing overcasts or undercasts with doors limited as far as feasible to development openings. The distance between air-lock doors on haulageways should be sufficient to accommodate a trip or train of maximum length. Where auxiliary doors are installed to control ventilation during emergencies, they should be so placed that they can be utilized readily in case of damage to the air-lock doors.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

"During installation of pile, a soil column is formed inside the pile. For small depths, the height of the soil column typically equals to the penetration depth (full coring state). As the penetration depth increases, the developed internal shear stresses become larger and reduce the amount of soil to penetrate. At the same time, the soil in pile at the bottom is compacted. This will continue until at a given moment, the soil column is a soil plug, and does not stop moving relative to the pile. This is because the shear stresses developed in the interior of the pile are greater than the load-bearing capacity of the ground.This paper presents the results obtained from 40 model pile tests carried out to assess the effect of soil plug on the model pile capacity. The piles are embedded in sand of different densities with different lengths of piles and types of pile-ends. The model tests are divided into two parts according to the type of end of the pipe pile used in the model pile test. The first part consists of 32 model open-ended piles with different lengths of soil plug inside the pile. The second part consists of 8 model closed-ended piles.It was concluded that open-ended pipe piles behave as a closed-ended if the soil plug formed inside piles in state partial plug or full plug. Length of soil plug depends on the type of installation and relative density. The pile load carrying capacity in dense sand is several times greater than those in medium sands especially in cases of closed ended piles or open-ended since the pipe pile can produce external and internal skin friction in addition to end bearing resistance that makes the total pile capacity close to that of closed-ended pile. Whether open-ended piles are driven or pressed in the fully coring - fully unplugged mode or in the partially plugged mode, the plug does contribute to static pile base capacity."

The degree of accuracy relative to plant mill operation depends upon how representative the sample is of the total mill feed.The results of the Bond closed circuit rod and ball mill grindability tests (3) are given in grams of product sized material produced per revolution of the test mill. In developing a method to evaluate plant operating data and results from his grindability test, Fred Bond developed the ""Third Theory of Comminution."" The C.S.A. copper-lead-zinc mine, located 7 miles north of Cobar in central-western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral ocurrence in the Cobar mining field. The generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They are enclosed by the steeply westdipping, west-facing sediments of the Cobar Group, and comprise lenticular steeply north-pitching and eastdipping zones of sulphide mineralization which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotitegalena to less massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties.The thinly bedded siltstones, shales, and greywackes enclosing the mineralization appear to have derived some of their constituents from volcanic sources. They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and superimposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralization. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distribution of the orebodies.

Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by allowing assets to be used more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the “productivity paradox,” where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the benefits are in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that re-engineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors, but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes, such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships, can be adequately transposed into a mine setting. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn, require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manager training simulators. This paper reviews some of the latest IT products and outlines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

"Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is classified as the leading work-related disability in the mining industry. ONIHL has a negative impact, on not only the health and occupational productivity of affected individuals, but arguably also on the country’s mining industry and economy. Hearing conservation programmes (HCPs) are an effective strategy in the management of ONIHL. However, current literature indicates that HCPs are not achieving the anticipated and desired outcomes in the South African mining sector despite the efforts focused on the management of ONIHL. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the use of a feedback-based noise monitoring model as a tool for monitoring and managing ONIHL in the South Africa’s mining sector. This model is a basic static feedback model with practical applications such as estimating, monitoring. and providing quantitative information to aid miners, mining administrators, and policy-makers in decision-making around HCPs. Additionally, the model could form part of an early intervention and management strategy for ONIHL in the workplace. The strength of this model, although currently static, is that it encompasses all the pillars of HCPs and takes into account the policies concerned with the management of ONIHL in the mining sector. IntroductionHazardous noise levels (above 85 dBA) in the workplace place exposed employees at risk of developing a disabling occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL). ONIHL is the ‘partial or complete hearing loss in one or both ears as a result of one’s employment’ (Nandi and Dhatrak, 2008, p. 1). This type of hearing loss develops gradually as a result of being exposed to continuous or intermittent high levels of noise over a long period of time (McBride, 2004; Patel et al., 2010; Rappaport and Provencal, 2001). A hearing threshold below 40 dBs is classified as a disabling hearing loss (Yadav et al., 2015), resulting in a hidden condition that does not readily manifest itself (Tye-Murray, 2009, p. 3). Dugan (2003) describes disabling hearing loss as the ‘most prevalent, least recognized and least understood physical disability’, while Copley and Frederichs (2010) and Hermanus (2007) argue that permanent disabling hearing loss is a major contributor to the global burden of disease on individuals, families, communities, and countries."

Indicator Kriging (IK) is being commonly applied to mineral resource assessment problems. More recently, indicator simulation has also been used for sensitivity analysis and difficult change of support problems. The essential theory underlying indicator geostatistics has not changed since its introduction 10 years ago; however, the last decade has produced many important developments in its implementation. The objective of this paper is to consider some of the more important implementation details. Examples from the Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea are used to illustrate the steps in an indicator geostatistical study and the importance of various implementation decisions. Specifically, in many precious metals deposits the continuity of the grades is typically quite anisotropic. This anisotropy varies in both magnitude and direction throughout the deposit. Building a model of this anisotropy can considerably improve the local kriged or simulated points. One approach to build this model is presented. In addition, there is typically more than one mineralization style and geological rock type; the spatial character of the mineralization can be quite different within each geological rock type. The rational treatment of anisotropy and geological subdivisions is common to all mineral resource assessment procedures; the importance of this qualitative geological information is not diminished with more sophisticated techniques such as indicator kriging. This paper presents an overdue comprehensive look at the practical aspects of indicator methodology. Many of the techniques and procedures documented in this paper have been developed during the course of detailed mine feasibility studies.

Up to one half of neodymium and praseodymium production, key ingredients in permanent magnets, is produced illegally. About 60% of cobalt production, critical in lithium-ion batteries and other applications, comes from central African states, and much of it is produced illegally. Tantalum, important in modern electronics, is also primarily sourced from central Africa and, again, much of it illegally. Illegal mineral production, as exemplified here, is often used to fund armed conflict. Furthermore, it is typically conducted with scant regard for human rights and environmental protection. It also leads to depressed prices which in turn limits the possibility of legitimate producers entering the market. Systems of traceability and provenance, along with cooperative supply chain participants can limit the production of illegitimate material and thereby improve conditions in the countries of origin and reduce downward pressure on prices.

The Torington Lodes.This paper describes investigations into mineralogical, petrological and structural associations of cassiterite in occurrences of economic value. The work was carried out in three mines, during a number of years, in the hope that the, data collected might be helpfulin the search for occurrences of cassiterite in stanniferous zones and reduce unproductive exploratory work. Tin-bearing lodes at Torington, in the New England district, New South Wales, have been worked since 1880, and the locality is the most important centre of lode tin occurrence in the, State. The township of Torington is 18 miles westerly from Deepwater, a station on the Great Northern Railway, 446 miles from Sydney.The tinfield forms part of the Mole Tableland, which has an altitude between 3,000 ft. and 4,000 ft. above sea level. The country rock, in which the stanniferous lodes occur, is granite of Permian age, which has been intruded into Carboniferous claystone. An inlierof claystone is exposed to the west of the stanniferous area, 'and in it, close to' its contact with the enclosing granite, are occurrences of wolfram and bismuth. These minerals, together with chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, zinc blende, galena and molybdenite, in very small quantity, are associated with cassiterite in lodes traversing the granite, particularly near the claystone, but decrease in amount with distance from the contact. Their occurrence is sporadic and usually causes no trouble in dressing the cassiterite concentrate, the final product containing less than 1% of total penalisable impurity. In Curnow's mine, pyrite, galena and molybdenite have been observed at 700 ft. from surface.The granite is of the biotite type and its structure may be divided into four groups, or classifications, arising from segregation processes during cooling and consolidation. The four classes, in order of extent of distribution, are:1. Granite of normal type, in which the constituent quartz felspar and mica, have a particle size approximately 14, in.2. Porphyritic granite, in which the felspar particles are from % in. to lin. in size, that of the quartz and mica approximately % in.3. A fine-grained granite, in which the particles of all constituent minerals are % in. or less in size;4. A rock of highly siliceous ground mass containing very small particles of felspar and almost negligible biotite.Type 1 is the general type of granite in all mines of the field; types 2 and 3 may occur as large masses, or all three classes may merge rapidly one into the other, and all be disclosed in 20 ft. of driving. Usually, however, the segregations are massive, but are not associated with any special horizon. For instance, a mass of porphyiiticgranite extends from surface to a depth of 440 ft., for a distance of 350 ft. south from the New England main shaft. The upper levels of Curnow's mine, 14" mile south-east, are in normal granite, but a restricted mass 'of porphyritic granite occurred between Nos. 5 and 6 levels, or 400-500 ft. below the collar of the shaft...

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.
