Scenario-level uncertainty is a representation of large-scale differences encountered when considering ultimate mining pits optimized over various subsets of stochastic realizations. Accounting for scenario-level uncertainty allows mine plans to be assessed against several probabilistic subsurface interpretations. Scenario-level uncertainty is found through clustering stochastic geostatistical realizations and optimizing final pits across the realizations in each cluster. Where these pits are geometrically different, plans for each scenario differ. Knowing these differences allows the value of each planning alternative to be assessed based on the value and relative probability of each scenario. These results also facilitate the use of formal decision-making frameworks for planning, leading to optimization that better represents the full statistical characterization of the deposit. An example utilizing this approach evaluates both infrastructure placement and drilling program requirements. In both cases, scenario-level uncertainty improves initial plans by limiting opportunity costs and identifying additional potential.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 20pp., 31 refs. Estimates of coal tonnage on UK open cast mining sites often vary from the recoverable tonnage. This is because the estimates depend on the geological variability of the coal measures. Geological parameters, such as thickness, quality and disturbance of the seam, have a direct control upon this variance. Risk analysis techniques have been applied using commercially available software to combine each parameter's variability into a cumulative variance, resulting in a tonnage distribution. Sensitivity modelling has also been used to identify the geological parameters which have the largest influence on the variance of the simulated tonnage distribution. An understanding of the relationship between the tonnage and geological variability has helped to focus exploration more efficiently. A cost to risk relationship can now be monitored, helping management to avoid negative consequences on site

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

With the exhaustion of orebodies close to the main haulage shaft of the Emperor mine, an increased rate of development, aimed at earlier investigation of values disclosed by exploration drill holes has been attained with an overall reduction in unit costs.This paper describes the techniques used in rates of advance up to and exceeding 1,000 ft per 28-day period.

In the past fifteen to twenty years, the use of drilled piers to support high capacities in coastal plain deposits has become more and more common. With improved construction techniques and better understanding of pier behavior, drilled shafts with capacities of 200 to 500 tons are not unusual. The purpose of this presentation is to review several drilled pier installations from North Carolina to north-east Florida as a means of illustrating the different types of design concepts and installation techniques which are presently being used. Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron (1). Fifty centuries were to pass before men learned to isolate nickel and add it to iron to produce the same alloy for much the same purpose. Meanwhile, man had found another natural alloy of nickel, known first to the Chinese as paktong, or 'white copper.' It was obtained from complex copper-nickel sulphide ores of Yunnan in southern China. This metal was brought by caravan through India into Bactria, a country north of the Hindu-Kush mountains, in what is now known as Russian Turkestan. The earliest specimen extant is a Bactrian coin attributed to 235 B.C. The rough reddish-white metal was also sent in the form of triangular rings to Canton, where zinc ores were added and the whole smelted to a more malleable alloy, also known later as paktong. This alloy was the forerunner of German-or nickel-silver. Specimens of this alloy, wrought into ornamental candlesticks and boxes, were brought from Canton to Europe by the East India Company in the early days of the China trade. Paktong was highly prized for its beauty as well as its eastern origin in far-away China. By 1760 the unwrought metal was imported into England for domestic manufacture.

"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

This paper describes the back analysis of the Pavoncelli tunnel, an hydraulic tunnel which was excavated between 1904 and 1915 in South of Italy and experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake. A numerical simulation which is intended to study the behaviour of the tunnel during this seismic event is presented, also accounting for the swelling phenomenon that took place during and after construction.

Updraft sintering of lead concentrates was introduced at Port Pirie in 1955 and since that time a considerable amount of investigational work has been carried out in the laboratory and on the plant with the objective of improving both the understanding of the process and its practical application.From this work it is now possible to predict trends in design and operation, which should result in capital savings and increased efficiency of future updraught plants.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 70 years a remarkable advance has been made in the method of preparing lead concentrates for smelting in the Port Pide blast furnaces of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.). Beginning in 1889 with heap roasting, the process progressed to Ropp roasters and Huntington-Heberlein pots in various combinations, then to multiple small Dwight Lloyd (D.L.) downdraught machines. In 1940 two large 10 ft by 50 ft D.L. downdraught machines were installed, and finally in 1955 updraught sintering was ,introduced with the installation of the present 10 ft by 99 ft sinter machine.At the time this last machine was built it was the first unit of its type and thus, of necessity, an experimental machine. During the eight years it has been operating a considerable amount of investigational work on sintering has been carried out both on the plant and in the laboratory.It is now felt that sufficient information is on hand to predict at least tentatively, some of the future developments in lead sintering, whereby both the quality of the sinter and the rate of production may be improved. This will result in a considerable reduction in smelting costs.

"For new mining projects or for medium- to long-term areas of existing mines, drilling data is invariably on a relatively large grid. Direct estimates for selective mining units (SMUs), and also for much larger block units, will then be smoothed due to the information effects and the high error variance.The difficulty is that ultimately, during mining, selection will be done on the basis of SMUs on the final close-spaced data grid (grade control), which will then be available, i.e. the actual selection will be more efficient, with fewer misclassifications. However, this ultimate mining position is unknown at the project feasibility stage and therefore has to be estimated. This estimation is required because any cash flow calculations made on the basis of the smoothed estimates will obviously misrepresent the overall economic value of the project, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the average grade of the orebody. Similarly, unsmoothed estimates will be conditionally biased and will give even worse results, particularly in local areas of short- and medium-term planning or mining.This paper presents a case study of indirect post-processing and proportional modelling of recoverable resources designed for mediumand long-term mine planning at the Gold Fields’ Tarkwa Mine in Ghana. The case study compares long-term indirect recoverable mineral resource estimates based on typical widely spaced feasibility data to the corresponding production grade control model as well as the mine production. The paper also proposes certain critical regression slope and kriging efficiency control limits to avoid inefficient medium- to longterm recoverable estimates, and highlights the danger of accepting block estimates that have a slope of regression less than 0.5."

The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

It is becoming increasingly common practice to re-use existing foundations for new projects, especially on urban sites where geotechnical conditions are congested. A knowledge of the foundation dimensions and capacity is essential for this to take place, however, as-built records are often non-existent. Non-Destructive evaluation (NDE) is now becoming an important tool in assessing old foundation properties and their potential for re-use. Pile dimensions are also critical in the power industry, when they are supporting transmission towers which need to be upgraded, and may carry additional wind loading. This paper describes the application of various NDE techniques that are available and how they can be used to determine pile length, shape and capacity in difficult site conditions, including foundations under structures.

For small particles of niekel flotation eoncentrate (av. size 50 pm) the predominant heat transfer mechanism under suspension smelting conditions, prior to ignition, is conduction from the gas and not radiation from nearby hot bodies. Results of laboratory tests using gas temperatures 380-700°C and furnace wall temperatures 380-1100°C were in accord with heat transfer theory. In practieal flash smelters earlier ignition, and hence better utilization of the space in the shaft, would result from introduetion at the top of the shaft of gases hotter than the ignition temperature of 500-600°C.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

Major producers posted 25¢-per-pound increases on cadmium, raising their domestic quotes to $2.75 per pound. COBALT: Cobalt consumption in February, exclusive of salts and driers, increased by 21 percent compared with consumption in January. Significant increases in consumption occurred in cutting and wear resistant materials, welding and alloy hard-facing rods and materials, magnetic alloys, and other alloys. The major sales agency for cobalt in New York reportedly announced price increases, effective April 15, 1976, for cobalt metal, powders, and oxide. The new price for 250 kilo (551 lb.) drums of cobalt metal (granules or electrolytic cathodes), f.o.b. Port of New York, was quoted at $4.40 per pound. This is the first cobalt price increase since January 23, 1975, and is the result of a price increase by Sozacom, the official Zairian sales agent. Other cobalt producers are expected to raise their prices in line with the new quote.

In this paper, the finite element method is used to obtain deformations of a rock tunnel. More than 3,000 numerical simulations and calculations were carried out. The analysis of this results has allowed to achieve mathematical formulations and graphs, to obtain in advance support monitored displacements in tunnelling construction, so they can be predicted before excavation and supporting woks. The application of the presented formulations and charts will aid engineers to control tunnel monitoring, reducing decision time when problems occur. The analysis is limited to cases involving elastic behaviour of the terrain for tunnels of average to good quality in rock, and to excavation sections of average or smaller dimensions for road tunnels. The results show that, in all cases, mathematical expressions to obtain induced displacements around tunnel excavations, have similar pattern than Kirsch (1898) expressions for circular excavations. As corollary of the achieved results, a method to estimate in situ natural geostress ratio K0=sh/sv , by means of convergence measurements, is presented. In diesem Beitrag wurden die Verschiebungen eines Tunnels durch die Methode de Finiten Elemente berechnet. Mehr als 3000 numerische Simulationen und Berechnungen wurden ausgeführt. Die Analyse dieser Resultate hat es ermöglicht, mathematische Formeln und Grafiken zu entwickeln, die zur Voraussage der Verschiebungen in Tunnel dienen, auch unter Betrachtung der verschiedenartigen Abstützungen. So können die Verschiebungen vor den Erdarbeiten und dem Bau der Abstützung abgeschätzt werden. Die abgeleiteten Formeln und Grafiken werden vor allem einen grossen Dienst für Ingenieure bei der Mithilfe zu zeitsparenden Entscheidungen im Tunnelbau und bei der Tunnelkontrolle leisten. Die analysierten Fälle sind auf eine elastische Modellierung des Baugrunds beschränkt, sowie auf eine mittlere bis gute Qualität des Felsens und auf die Aushebung von Abtragungsabschnitten mittlerer oder geringer Grösse für den Strassenverkehr. Die Resultate zeigen, dass in allen Fällen die hergeleiteten Formeln zur Berechnung der durch den Tunnelbau verursachten Verschiebungen um den Tunnel die gleiche mathematische Struktur haben wie diejenigen von Kirsch (1898) für kreisförmigen Bodenaushub. Als Korollarium der ausgeführten Berechnungen wird eine Methode zur Abschätzung der vorherrschenden in situ Geospannungs-Verhälniss K0=sh/sv angegeben, die von den Messungen der Verschiebungen im Tunnel ausgeht. Dans cet article, la méthode des éléments finis est utilisée pour obtenir les déformations d’un tunnel creusé dans la roche. Plus de 3000 simulations numériques et calculs ont été effectuées. L’analyse de ces résultats a permis de définir des modèles mathématiques et des abaques afin de prédire, avant l’excavation et les travaux de soutènement, les déplacements auscultés pendant la construction du tunnel. L’application de ces modèles et abaques permettra donc aux ingénieurs de contrôler les déplacements durant l’auscultation du tunnel et de réduire le temps de décision lorsque des problèmes surviennent. L’analyse est limitée au cas du comportement élastique du terrain pour des tunnels creusés dans de la roche de moyenne a bonne qualité, et à de sections d’excavation de petites à moyennes dimensions pour des tunnels routiers. Les résultats montrent que, dans tous les cas, les expressions mathématiques permettant d’obtenir les déplacements induits autour des excavations de tunnel, présentent des similitudes avec celles de Kirsch (1898) pour des excavations circulaires. The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.
