"With the plethora of cable bolts on the market, geotechnical engineers can be baffled by the differences in performance claims from the manufacturers but perhaps more importantly they are sometimes at a loss in making an optimal selection matching behaviour with a particular site condition. To this end a new testing methodology has been developed that can cater for the varying types of cable bolt behaviours. The methodology is based on the laboratory short encapsulation pull test (LSEPT) as recommended in the British Standard and overcomes several deficiencies such as cable rotation. Of most significance however, is its inability to measure the post-peak residual performance of high load transfer capacity cables and consequently, there is an inference that these cables may be susceptible to sudden anchorage failure with relatively little yield. This paper details the results of anchorage performance tests of a range of cable bolts and the differences in performance with rock strength and drill hole diameter.INTRODUCTIONA research project was undertaken to develop a new laboratory-scale test apparatus to study the axial performance of fully grouted cable bolts that are used in the Australian underground coal mining industry. Work by Thomas (2012) and others in recent years found there were a number of deficiencies in the testing methodologies making it difficult to determine and compare the performance of the dozen or more different types of cable bolts on the market. This has meant that geotechnical practioners have been hamstrung in optimizing the design of ground support systems in underground environments that are increasingly more arduous.A cable bolt is a flexible tendon consisting of a quantity of wound wires that are grouted in boreholes at defined distances between holes in order to provide ground reinforcement of excavations (Hutchinson & Diederichs, 1996). They were initially introduced into the underground hard rock mining industry in the 1960s (Thorne & Muller, 1964) and since the early 1970s have been brought to coal mining operations."

Part 1: Physical Characteristics The physical and mineralogical characteristics of samples from five sources in the Western United States were determined using size analyses, microscopic studies, and point counts. These results were combined with leachability assays and the chemistry of leachates obtained during slurry tests to predict sample dissolution characteristics during column leaching tests. Part 2: Dissolution Characteristics Two columns of each sample were leached over a period of 3 years with synthetic rain. Residence times were between 2 and 11 weeks. The samples were subjected to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations and wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. During the latter part of this study, a biocide leachant (sodium benzoate) was substituted for synthetic rain to assess the degree of dissolution caused by biological oxidation. It was found that the presence or absence of barite or carbonate minerals can be used to predict the leaching behavior of the column material.

Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

THE influence of cobalt and nickel on the properties of steel might be readily expected to be very similar. The two elements occupy close and somewhat unusual positions in the periodic table, their chemical behavior and compounds are so completely analogous and their various physical properties, including the ferro-magnetic characteristic, show such a remarkable correspondence, that there is no doubt of a strong resemblance existing between these two metals. However, the variety of, properties that are obtained from steel is due, largely to the fact that the element iron possesses allotropic forms. Alloying elements that affect these allotropic forms, or alter the nature of the allotropic changes, exert a profound influence on the resulting steel. In the case of nickel and cobalt, although these elements are very similar chemically and physically, it is found that they differ distinctly in their individual effects on the critical points of iron. Both nickel and cobalt form a series of homogeneous solid solutions with iron at temperatures above 1800° F. The difference in their behavior does not occur until changes begin to take place in the solid state below this temperature. An inspection of the respective thermal equilibrium diagrams at the lower temperatures makes the opposite effects of nickel and cobalt clearly evident.

Many rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) compounds absorb/desorb hydrogen reversibly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. For LaNi5 which is used as a battery material, the electrochemical nature of this process is well known. In the case of Nd-Fe-B which has found wide application as a powerful permanent magnet, the absorption of hydrogen has both significant advantages and disadvantages. However, a fundamental understanding of the hydrogenation process at ambient temperatures and its effect on subsequent corrosion behavior is currently lacking. This paper reports the results of the hydrogenation of NdFeB two alloys, (NdDy)15Fe78.3A10.7B6 and (NdDy)15Fe67Co5V4A12B7, which are compared with that of LaNi5. Results show that hydrogenation can be accomplished by either electrochemical methods or immersion in dilute sulfuric acid. For the latter method, the change in lattice parameter indicates that the level of hydrogen absorbed by the NdFeB particles corresponds fairly closely to an overall composition of Nd2Fe14BH2.7. Cyclic electrochemical charge/discharge experiments show that the maximum hydrogen discharge capacities of the NdFeB, NdFeB-Co-V, and LaNi5 are 40, 60, and 210 mA?h?g-1, respectively. Anodic potentiodynamic polarization measurements and calculated values of icon reveal that absorbed hydrogen in NdFeB-Co-V and the NdFeB may lead to significant increases in corrosion rates.

"In the adaptation of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) to hard-rock mining applications, circuit development has mainly focused on placing HPGRs in the role of tertiary crusher in the preparation of ball mill feed. In order to take advantage of the potential energy benefits associated with HPGR and stirred mill grinding technologies, work was done to investigate the potential of and resultant energy benefits of placing the HPGR in series with a high speed stirred mill in replacement of the conventional cone crusher / ball mill arrangement. The proposed circuit was designed to operate with two stages of HPGR grinding followed by high speed stirred milling.Using a pilot-scale HPGR unit inline with a 20 liter stirred mill, the design criteria, circuit arrangement and consequent comminution energy requirements for a circuit processing copper sulphide ore from Teck Resources’s Mesaba Copper project were determined. These results were then compared to two other circuits, an HPGR / ball mill circuit and a conventional crusher / ball mill circuit processing the same ore.The testwork indicated at a proof-of-concept level that the HPGR / stirred mill circuit could potentially be appropriate for this duty and further work on the concept is merited. While the results indicate that the HPGR component of the circuit was more energy efficient than conventional cone crushing, the energy efficiency of the stirred mill was found to be lower than that of a comparable ball mill undertaking the same duty. However, increased energy efficiency of the stirred mill portion of the circuit is possible with further optimization and further work on the concept is indicated."

Pyritic sulfur in coal occurs as discrete mineral particles, and its liberation and physical rejection is the primary target for coal desulfurization. An acceptable solution to the pyrite removal problem from fine coal is not found in the standard methods of coal cleaning such as jigging, heavy-medium separation, tabling, and hydro-cycloning. Although fine coal is an ideal size for froth flotation, this method, as currently practiced is also unsuitable as the fine pyrite usually floats with the coal. One possible solution to this problem may be the froth flotation of pyrite from coal. This reverse flotation scheme would have the major advantage of removing both free pyrite and locked pyrite-coal combinations. With this possibility in mind, we have, as a first step, compared the flotation and adsorption. characteristics of an ore-pyrite and coal-pyrite with potassium-ethyl-xanthate as a collector 1 Related Research. The action of ethyl-xanthate on coal has been studied 2 by Horsley. He measured the contact angles of coal in distilled water and in the presence of purified ethyl-xanthate. The results indicated that the xanthate was not adsorbed by the coal. Additional contact angle data were obtained to determine the effects of cupric, ferric, and ferrous salts on the system. Then either the ferric or cupric salts were in, solution with the xanthate, there was an increase in the natural contact angles of the coal. This indicated that these heavy metal ions activated the flotation of the coal with xanthate. However, ferrous iron did not act as an activator. Horsley stated that the most attractive explanation was that the xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen in the presence of the ferric and cupric ions.

THE gradually increasing proportion of sulphide ores which lead smelters of to-day are called upon to handle has caused the roasting problem to become one of ever greater importance. We may look back a score of years or so and recall the old hand roasters, some of which turned out a finely divided roasted product, and others fashioned with a "fuse-box" wherein the roasted ore was slagged. Then came mechanical furnaces of several types, the Brückner cylinder, the Brown-O'Harra, the Ropp, and others, all designed to cut out the cumbersome hand labor of the old reverberatories. Roasting costs were thereupon reduced and tonnages stimulated to a gratifying extent. However, it seems to have been early recognized that this very feature of a greater amount of roasted sulphide ore as compared with oxide ore brought with it a train of difficulties at the blast furnaces. The mechanically roasted ore was fine physically, the blast furnaces were choked and the troubles of the smelterman were not at an end. Then the Huntington-Heberlein pot system of roasting appeared upon the scene, and later on the Dwight-Lloyd machines were invented, and inasmuch as both of these processes were designed not only to roast the ore but to agglomerate it as well, it was apparent that distinct steps in advance has been achieved. At the Murray plant, modern up-to-date roasting practice is fully exemplified and there are now in successful operation roasting furnaces or devices of several sorts: namely, Godfrey revolving-hearth furnaces, Wedge multiple-hearth mechanical roasters, Dwight-Lloyd. sintering machines, and Huntington-Heberlein pots. Godfrey and Wedge furnaces will properly handle material high in sulphur, say ores with 25, 30, and 35 per cent. of that element; D. &.L. machines and H. & H. pots will positively not treat efficiently ores or mixtures containing anywhere near the sulphur content mentioned, but are confined to charges containing in the neighborhood of 15 or 18 per cent. In passing, it may also be explained that, so far as the knowledge of the writer goes, Godfrey and Wedge furnaces do not economically eliminate sulphur to an extent

The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. "The Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\1PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. However, the recent Crandall Canyon l\.fine collapse showed that further research is required to improve the pillar design for recovery under deep cover. To this end, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the West Virginia University (WVU) l\.fining Engineering Department have been working together to improve both the ARJ\1PS and the Lal\.fodel programs.This paper compares and analyzes the overburden loads calculated by ARJ\1PS 2002, the new ARJ\1PS 2010, and the Lal\.fodel program with regard to the retreat pillar line, the gob, and the barrier pillars. The analysis shows a number of distinct differences between the ARJ\1PS and Lal\.fodel loading distributions. Ultimately, the programs, with their distinctive load distributions, are used to analyze a database of 52 deep cover pillar retreat case studies, and the ability of each program to discriminate between successful and unsuccessful retreat pillar plans is evaluated.INTRODUCTIONThe Analysis of Retreat l\.fining Pillar Stability (ARJ\.f PS) and the Lal\.fodel programs have been used successfully in the U.S. for designing safe pillar recovery operations for many years. A study was undertaken to quantify the differences in performance between a full-length encapsulated cable bolt and a partially encapsulated cable bolt. Much research has been reported on the differences in cable bolt design and operational parameters such as borehole diameter and grout type with much of this based on the Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT). However, there is a gap in knowledge surrounding the effect of anchorage length on load transfer and cable bolt performance particularly with respect to the role of the bulb in modified cable bolt designs. The objective of this study was to expand the existing knowledge base of cable bolt performance with the intent of developing a revised design criterion. Alongside a comprehensive review of current cable support theory, design and practice, a series of pull tests was undertaken to compare each anchorage method using a high capacity modified cable bolt. The results serve to confirm earlier work on fully encapsulated anchorage. Both the peak load capacity and stiffness of the fully encapsulated cable bolt were nearly double that of the partially anchored cable bolt. When the tests were repeated in an oversized borehole, while there tended to be more variation in performance, there was little significant difference in the mean results. In addition to anchorage length, there are other factors that contribute to cable bolt performance including in order of sensitivity: embedment length, water-to-cement ratio of the grout, type of grout and borehole diameter. While the National Academy of Sciences has stated that gravimetric sampling technology for compliance purposes is adequate, research into various aspects of respirable dust control require data on many other parameters of airborne dust. These, in turn, have created the need to use many instruments, other than personal gravimetric samplers, in mine environments for dust measurement. There is a need to evaluate the performance of these instruments under conditions of potential use. As part of research in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, cascade impactors, gravimetric personal samplers and gravimetric samplers collecting dust using isokinetic sampling principles were employed for dust measurements under identical conditions in a mine airway. During the course of the experiments, 8-stage cascade impactors and gravimetric samplers drawing air isokinetically were located in the center of a mine airway at various stations. Two types of data were examined - concentration of dust and size distribution of the dust collected in the samplers. The data show that the amount of dust collected by an impactor is less than half the amount collected isokinetically. The size distributions of the dusts collected from the two instruments, though comparable, show a consistent difference in median diameters. The cause for this bias is examined. The paper presents and discusses the results of the tests, including the concentrations and size distributions obtained from the two instruments for different experimental conditions. There is a need to document the performance of various dust measuring devices in mine airflow conditions.

Mining is important to the economies of both Tanzania and Namibia. Recently, both nations revised their national mineral policies to ensure future economic benefit. The main difference in the mineral policy-formulation processes followed by the two countries is identified as the degree and timing of stakeholder involvement during the articulation process. In the case of Namibia, the stakeholders were involved from the start in identifying issues and in suggesting policy solutions. In contrast, the Tanzanian process involved stakeholders after a framework had been developed by a task team. The Tanzanian emphasis was on attracting foreign investment into a traditionally state enterprise system of mineral investment and development. One can argue that the policies developed met the initial requirements, and both are, therefore successful, despite the different processes of policy formulation that were used. However, several fundamental questions arise as a result of the two approaches. This paper attempts to answer these questions by providing a comparison of the processes used for developing and formulating the mineral policies of Tanzania and Namibia. It concludes that the Namibian consultative process is perhaps more sustainable in the long-term because of its wider public support. Time will tell which of these policy-formulation processes provides a basis for sustainable economic growth for developing mineral economies.

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

High temperature creep resistant alloys are used in power plants as steam pipes and headers where they have to withstand super heated steam temperatures of up to 600ºC for the lifetime of the plant. Frequently certain portions of pipes may be subjected to excessive temperatures and consequently suffer from creep damage. Damaged portions then have to be replaced by welding new steel to the service exposed steel. Such welds will have to be subjected to a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve residual stress. During such a PWHT it is then possible for the steel to crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) by what is known as Reheat Cracking (RHC), also known as stress relief cracking. For the present purpose the RHC susceptibility of service exposed steel was compared with that of new steel by reproducing the temperature cycle to which the HAZ will be subjected during welding in a weld simulator. This was followed by PWHT where the influence of residual stress was studied by applying a constant stress to such a weld-simulated specimen in a creep testing machine. A sharp spiral was machined along the length of the cylindrical specimen to simulate the presence of a possible weld defect. In this way it is possible to subject all portions of the simulated HAZ to the same stress intensity. For the purpose of the investigation 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel known to be susceptible to RHC was chosen. During testing a constant tensile stress was maintained while the temperature was increased to follow the thermal cycle prescribed for PWHT. It was found that the new steel in all instances failed by RHC along the grain boundaries in the high temperature heat affected zone. In the case of the service exposed steel the creep strength of parent metal was lower than that of new steel as a result of exposure to a steam temperature of 540°C for about 15 years. Consequently, all of the failures during testing occurred in a ductile manner by necking outside the HAZ rather than by RHC. When service exposed steel is welded to new material, it is expected that the creep strain associated with stress relaxation will mostly be concentrated in the parent steel outside the HAZ. Accordingly, it should probably not be necessary to make any extra allowance for reheat cracking during repair of steam pipes manufactured from 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel other than that applicable for welding new steel.

Sediment Quality Guidelines can provide target values that should not be exceeded when seabed deposits are disturbed for mining, waste discharge or other purposes. Three sets of Guidelines have appeared in 1994 and 1995: US NOAA (updated from 1991), Environment Canada (EnvCan) and Equilibrium Partitioning (EqP) developed in the UK from US Water Quality Criteria. The US NOAA and EnvCan Guidelines have been developed by comparing many experimental and site data sets, and have concluded that levels below which effects rarely occur, or above which probably will occur, are useful guidelines. US NOAA uses the terms ERL and ERM for these two levels, and EnvCan TEL and PEL. The EqP concept is that a value can be calculated below which trace metals present cannot raise the concentration in the interstitial water. There are some problems in comparing units, but the comparison shows in general that the EnvCan levels are less than, and down to half of, the US NOAA levels. EqP levels vary but are generally fairly close to US NOAA ERL levels, with one major exception. The EqP level for mercury is far lower than either US NOAAor EnvCan levels, at 0.008 mg kg-1 compared to 0.15 (ERL) and 0.13 (TEL) mg kg-1 respectively. Comments will be solicited on how such differing Guidelines should be used site-specifically for environmental management at mining operations, (1) in the regions for where they were developed, and (2) elsewhere.
