As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. In addition, hydraulic and lubrication systems if unaltered, will find their fluids pooled in the lower corners contentedly ignoring such higher elevation items as gears and bearings. The placer gold industry has experienced a roller-coaster history incorporating four major boom eras. The first, 'hand-methods' boom arose in the mid-19th Century from application of an old idea in new places around the globe. The subsequent hydraulic mining, bucket dredging, and 'hydraulic excavator-portable plant' booms each arose from application of new ideas in old places around the globe, ie in places where gold had been found during earlier booms. The new ideas that heralded the second, third and fourth booms were all significant advances in excavation technology. These enabled the industry to target the known deposits that were too deep, too wet, too small, or too low-grade for recovery by earlier boom methods. Relatively few new deposits or new deposit styles arose from the 'history book' exploration approach, so the number of known deposits to which each of the boom methods were applicable was limited. Consequently, the first three booms were each followed by significant periods of industry decline, and the fourth boom is currently waning inNew Zealand. Further decline is not inevitable and can be avoided by changing to a knowledge-based exploration approach similar to that adopted by the hard rock gold industry in the 1970s. Such an approach could easily herald the next placer gold boom.   Most of the relatively coarse, easily won alluvial gold in proximal and medial reaches of the active placer systems is gone. However, a substantial alluvial gold resource remains in the distal reaches of active systems, and in ancient placers formed onshore and on the continental shelf during previous sedimentary cycles. The resource in these deposits probably exceeds the total New Zealand placer production to date. Successful development of these placers requires application of robust geologic models for the formation and distribution of the placers through time, and advanced exploration technology that has not been used before in New Zealand. Nevertheless, the knowledge and technology required to explore and mine these deposits is available now. Many of these deposits contain a large proportion of problematic gold types that are difficult to recover with the commonly used gravity technology without sustaining significant losses. Despite advances in recovery technology in last few years, too much emphasis is placed on the incorrect assumption that gold size is the primary control on recovery efficiency. Other gold particle parameters, especially particle shape, exert a much greater control on whether gold will be saved or lost to the tails, and must be considered in the design of recovery technology and configuration of recovery circuits.

A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces. Laboratory test-work has established that two classes of redox catalysts based on anthraquinone and bipyridinium derivatives are effective in accelerating the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite (RI) in the aeration step of the Becher process. Two water-soluble anthraquinone derivatives are efficient: 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonicacid, disodium salt (catalyst AQ-2,6) and 9,10-anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid, monosodium salt(catalyst AQ-2). When 0.2 per cent w/v of either was added during aeration the rate of metalliciron removal was accelerated by two to three times. Furthermore, the addition of either compound resulted in magnetite (Fe3O4), the iron oxide phase preferred in commercial practice, being formed. However, both AQ-2,6 and AQ-2 were rapidly lost from solution during aeration although their catalytic activities persisted even when their concentrations in solution were low(<0.05 per cent w/v). The negatively charged anthraquinones were lost from solution most probably by adsorption onto the magnetite that has a net positive charge at the pH values encountered during aeration. To address this problem, the catalytic activities of positively charged bipryridinium derivatives were tested. Two water-soluble bipyridinium compounds, paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium dichloride) and diquat (6,7 dihydrodipyrido [1,2-a:2’,1’-c] pyrazinediiumdibromide), were found to significantly accelerate the rate of removal of metallic iron from reduced ilmenite, and both gave magnetite as the oxide product in the laboratory tests. Moreover, recycle tests showed they were not lost from solution as quickly as were the anthraquinone derivatives. Results in larger scale plant laboratory reactors also showed a significant increase in aerationrates when diquat was added and magnetite was again the oxide formed. However, the oxygensupply to the reactors was insufficient to achieve the maximum effect of the catalysts on theaeration rates. The limited supply of oxygen in a full scale aerator may prevent the application ofthe catalysts in a commercial Becher operation. Methods for increasing compliance to medical and health regimens were reviewed along with similar research in industrial and mine safety. Principles abstracted from both areas suggest that compliance with health and safety practices is improved when: (1) Workers are cooperatively involved with management in setting safety goals and planning for their achievement, (2) the program has the support of workers, supervisors, and management, (3) specific tasks responsible for injuries are targeted, (4) company organizational policy, educational, and behavioral programs work together toward the same goals, (5) workers and supervisors are frequently informed about their degree of correct task performance, and (6) programs are monitored by the frequency of correct performance of targeted tasks, (the means to lowered accident rates) rather than by lowered accident and injury rates themselves (the goals for safety programs.) Safety programs that incorporate these principles increase persons&apos; adherence to specified health and safety practices and subsequently decrease injury rates. It is recommended that: (1) a group of experts be convened to study the application of these principles to coal mine safety programs, and (2) a short course for safety trainers be developed to demonstrate how these principles can be used to strengthen existing mine safety programs.

This report presents the results of analytical studies made on two series of oil-shale samples from the Mahogany ledge of the Green River mine the character of the various grades of oil shale that are being mined and processed into shale oil and refined products at the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant at Rifle, Colo. The analytical work was part of a synthetic liquid fuels program being conducted at the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station, Laramie, Wyo. The 16 oil shales ranG6d in color from a gray brown ( or a sample that assayed 10.5 gallons of oil per ton to a very dark brown for a sample that assayed 75.0 gallons of oil per ton. In general, the samples were similar as to the types of organic and inorganic matter that they contained but varied widely in the amounts or these constituents. The principal constituents were calcite, dolomite, illite, and yellow organic material, while the minor constituents were quartz, feldspar and plagioclase feldspar, pyrite, marcasite, analcite, opal, black organic material, and small woody fragments. Some micro-fossils, spores and pollen grains were found also.

The Monument Valley and White Canyon districts are in northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. Exploration and mining for uranium has been conducted in these districts since the late 1940's. In July 1965, ore reserves plus ore production at 174 properties were approximately 3.3 million tons of ore containing about 19 million pounds U3O8, of which about 10 per cent remained in reserves. The two largest mines, Monument No. 2 and Happy Jack, together account for about 45 per cent of the sum of production and reserves. Approximately half the deposits in these districts contain less than 1000 tons of ore. Nearly 5000 feet of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic sedimentary rocks, mainly continental in origin, are exposed in these districts. All the important uranium deposits are in the Shinarump, the basal member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The Shinarump lies on a widespread unconformity. It is composed of fluvial sediments, generally less than 100 feet thick, that were deposited by streams flowing from a source to the south. Most of the deposits are in an arcuate belt, convex to the west. This belt, 3 to 12 miles wide, extends from Monument Valley northward nearly 130 miles. It is along the western flank of the ancient Monument Valley-Monticello upland, an area that was slightly uplifted at the beginning and again at the end of deposition of the Shinarump. Erosion and subsequent reworking of the Shinarump sediments in the vicinity of this upland are postulated to have made possible the transportation, in solution, of the uranium contained in these sediments. The soluble uranium probably was carried by migrating ground water into sites favorable for precipitation in Shinarump beds bordering the upland. Thus, the original very small amounts of dispersed uranium in the early Shinarump sediments were accreted in the favorable belt where the accumulations of carbonaceous plant remains and their decay products provided a persistent reducing environment.

Many bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania. Story of the Explosion At about 10 o&apos;clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No. 2 butt left and parallel off No. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of No. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 13 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air as explosion occurred.

"SynopsisScientific progress relies on the publication of ideas and experimental results that can be replicated, tested, and improved over time. The first printed book on metallurgy to have been published in Europe is considered to be De la Pirotechnia, written in Italian by Vannoccio Biringuccio, and published in Venice in 1540. Together with De Re Metallica, written by Georgius Agricola and published in Latin in 1556, this can be considered to mark the start of scientific and technical literature in this field. Scientific publishing of journal papers has been in existence for 350 years, since the world&apos;s oldest and longest-running scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was first published in London in 1665.The nature of scientific societies has changed significantly since the early days when regular meetings were held to discuss science and conduct experiments, and the reading of scientific papers took place, and publication of papers was undertaken to record the proceedings of meetings, often including rather robust debate. In today’s world, there is a plethora of publications, and it is close to impossible for anyone to keep up with the vast flow of information. International conferences with hundreds of presentations have taken the place of the local meetings that used to discuss a single paper or experiment. In this frenetic environment, it is essential that researchers are able to trust the material they read.The system of peer review is used to maintain standards and to improve the quality of papers. This vital system is, however, significantly flawed. There is little incentive for reviewers to invest sufficient time in picking up all errors in publications, and any ineptitude on their part is usually protected by anonymity. It has reached the point where some reviewers have mistakenly permitted the publication of hoax papers deliberately presented with a complicated scientific facade. In light of such astounding inadequacies, perhaps a more open review process would be an improvement. Electronic publishing allows errata to be linked to the original papers.There is an increasing trend towards open access for papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, which helps to reach as wide an audience as possible. This also supports the statement in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says ‘everyone has the right freely to … share in scientific advancement and its benefits’."

The river- or dredge-coal industry of Pennsylvania is conducted on many of the rivers and creeks that drain the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Coal thus recovered found its way into the streams as coal was being prepared for market by the anthracite industry proper, in the northeastern part of the State. The Principal rivers draining; the fields, those where dredging is taking place, are the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Lehigh. Several creeks - the Shamokin, Mahanoy, Wiconisco, and Swatara - also are productive sources of river or creek coal. Operations along the streams cover a wide territory, and along the Susquchanna alone; dredges are recovering coal for about 160 miles. Anthracite was a significant factor in the early industrial development of the United States. Industry used it to generate steam, and railroads used it as fuel for locomotives; but it probably was most important industrially in the smelting of iron ore. For more than a hundred years homes have been heated with this fuel. From the beginning of mining in 1807, to 1940, more than 4 billion net tons of anthracite had been prepared and shipped to market. In the preparation process much of the smaller-size coal and refuse found their way into rivers and creeks which carried the material many miles. This study is concerned with the recovery of that anthracite from those rivers and creeks.

In the United States the value of gold- and silver-ores is everywhere reckoned in ounces troy of the metal per " short ton " (2000 lbs. avoird.) of the ore. In the case of silver, which fluctuates in market value, the New York quotation on a given day must be known, in order to determine the gross value of an ore at that date. In Mexico the assay is reported &apos;in kilogrammes of silver or grammes of gold per metric ton. As everyone is aware, this is practically a percentage system, 1 kg. of silver per metric toll (1000 kg.) being 0.1 per cent., and 1 gramme of gold per metric ton, 0.0001 per cent. The notation is simple and convenient for both assayer and miner.* The Mexican government purchases at an unvarying price for silver, payable in silver, and at a fixed price for gold, payable in gold if the seller insists, but preferably in silver at about the rate of exchange between U. S. gold coin and Mesican silver coin. The value of silver is $40.915 per kilogramme in Mexican silver dollars. That of gold is $675.416 per kilogramme in gold coin. The mints do not, as a rule, issue gold dollars, as the government keeps them to pay the interest on the national debt. Almost all bullion containing a considerable percentage of gold is shipped to foreign countries (principally the United States) to be refined. Kinetics studies and other rate measurements are reviewed in the amine extraction of uranium and of some other related and associated metal ions. Equilibration&apos; is relatively fast in the uranium sulfate systems most important to uranium-hydrometallurgy. Significantly slow; equilibration-has &apos; been encountered&apos; in some other systems. Most of the recorded rate information, both qualitative and quantitative; has come from exploratory and, process-development development work, while some kinetics studies have been directed specifically toward elucidation of, extraction mechanisms. In contrast to some other extraction systems, relatively little attention has been given to the kinetics of uranium extraction by amines. This is because investigators have not been troubled by slow extractions. Instead, when rate limitations have been of concern in amine extraction (Amex) process developments, they have been mainly from slow phase disengagement rather than from slow equilibration. Nevertheless, taking uranium together with several other elements that are closely related to it or associated with it in typical processes, a considerable body of rate information has been recorded.

Present information indicates that a copper deposit can be safely fractured with a nuclear explosive and the copper successfully recovered by the in-situ leaching method. The process is not yet at the stage where it can be presented t ) the mining industry as a technique proven in all its aspects, but it is a method with high success potential. Unknown factors must be evaluated by a full-scale test before the economics or the extent of the use of the method by the mining industry can be predicted. Preliminary calculations indicate that the cost of fracturing a copper deposit nuclear explosives may range from l.8 to 55.2 cents per ton or in some case: less than a cent per pound of recoverable copper. Copper may be recovered at less cost than by conventional methods. Deposits with 4 pounds of recoverable copper may be economic and production from a deposit may begin in less than half the time required for conventional methods.

Christmas morning 2020, an IED in an RV was detonated along an evacuated section of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The blast damaged over 40 buildings, including AT&T’s Main Central Office and caused internet and cell outages across 1,200 zip codes for three days including the airport and EMS services. Published investigations by the ATF and FBI were inconclusive in determining the explosive composition and size. Video captured a large fireball that may indicate a fuel-air-mixture explosion which would create lower peak pressures than high explosives, but longer pressure duration and significant impulsive loading. Blast pressures were amplified by reflections in the urban environment bordered by the 8-story AT&T building and a row of multi-story historic buildings. Some structures had little damage as they were shielded from the blast pressure by closer buildings, and seemingly far-field structures contained damage from the pressure wave after multiple reflections and propagation through porous parking garages. Damage to the reinforced concrete frame AT&T building included snapped masonry ties, cracking and spall to the closest column, and vertical displacement of the elevator, even with the brakes applied. The historic structures directly across the street from the blast partially collapsed. Initial damage included complete failures of unreinforced masonry façades, broken timber beams, and uplifted roofs. Secondary, progressive collapse took place over months as the brick walls and weakened historic mortar could not resist typical wind and environment loads. One of the close historic structures was renovated in the 1990’s and structural retrofits to comply with building codes were required. The addition of steel columns and façade tie-ins improved survivability and it remained standing with a high percentage of the front brick intact. Generally, the observed blast damage was related to a structural component’s mass and flexibility. Internal timber framing was unscathed, but many steel studs required replacement. Glazing damage was observed several blocks away and many roof membranes were punctured by falling debris. Secondary damage from broken sprinkler lines and loss of environmental control often led to more costly repairs than the initial blast pressure damage. The proliferation of bomb-making knowledge leads to hundreds of bombings each year in the US. Building risk considerations should include explosive threats along with other hazards. ASCE structural standards and design manuals have been published to address these risks and may be useful guides for building construction.

"Between 1934 and 1956, nearly 31 million grams of gold were produced in the Matachewan area from deposits on properties belonging to Young-Davidson Mines Limited and Matachewan Consolidated Mines Limited. In 1979, production from these properties was renewed by Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited.Most of the gold produced has come from relatively lowgrade deposits (3.4 gl t or less) that occur in an east-trending belt of dykes and irregular bodies of trachytic syenite. Although small by comparison, these deposits have some of the characteristics of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits. The mineralized syenite contains up to 5 per cent disseminated pyrite and is highly fractured and cut by quartz and quartzcarbonate veinlets. Gold occurs as native gold along fractures, in quartz veinlets and as minute inclusions in pyrite. Minor chalcopyrite and trace amounts of scheelite, molybdenite and galena are also present. Mineralization was accompanied by potassic alteration, consisting mainly of potassium feldspar.Some gold was also produced from small, but higher-grade, deposits in volcanic rocks. These deposits occur near the syenite-hosted deposits and consist of quartz veins and stringers mineralized .with pyrite and gold. Minor gold is present in some low-grade, porphyry-type copper-molybdenum occurrences and, locally, in large, isolated quartz veins.Lead isotope analyses suggest that the gold deposits were formed at about 2700 Ma and were locally remobilized at approximately 2400 Ma, following the Kenoran orogeny. The deposits appear to be genetically related to felsic magmas emplaced in an epizonal environment and deposited from hydrothermal solutions relatively concentrated in S and K20."

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market&apos;s attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.
