Ancient mining and Zimbabwe T. N. HUFFMAN*. Ph.D. (Illinois) (Visitor) Ancient gold mining and Zimbabwe have been commonly associated for over a hundred years, either in terms of an exotic colony for gold export or as an African state based on the East Coast trade. The stratigraphy and radiocarbon dates from Zimbabwe and the known sequence for the Rhodesian Iron Age demonstrate that Zimbabwe was built after AD. 1000. A review of the evidence for ancient gold mining shows a similar antiquity, and a complementary rise in prosperity in Arab settlements on the East Coast indicates that gold was not extensively mined until the eleventh century. Large quantities of imported articles at Zimbabwe indicate the extent of trading during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the origins of Zimbabwe probably lay in an overflow of wealth from the gold trade during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Zimbabwe was abandoned by the sixteenth century because of environmental factors.

After delegates had been welcomed by Dr P.T. Wedepohl, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr J.D. Austin, President of the SAIMM, delivered the opening address. Corrigenda to article on copper* I read with considerable interest the recent articles on copper by Mr C.O. Beale as published in the Journal. However, in Part 11 the section dealing with Prieska Copper Mines (Pty) Limited contained several factual errors, details of which are given below.

A colloquium on industrial minerals entitled' A Strategy for Growth in the Industrial Minerals Sector' was held at Mintek on 5th November, 1991, under the auspices of the Extractive Metallurgy Sub-Committee of the SAIMM. The SAIMM had not been previously active in the field of industrial minerals, and the programme was designed to appeal to the middle management of mining and manufacturing companies in the industrial-minerals field. The rate of reaction between different carbonaceous reducing agents and silicon monoxide gas was studied by the use of a technique developed in Norway by Tuset and Raaness. Argon carrier gas was used to pass a known fixed concentration of silicon monoxide gas through an I1 cm3 sample of precalcined reducing agent at 1650°c. Silicon monoxide gas was generated by the heating of a mixture of silica and silicon carbide, and the progress of the reaction was followed by monitoring the carbon monoxide in the off-gas with an infrared spectrometer. The reactivity of silicon monoxide gas towards a number of carbonaceous reducing agents (charcoal, Iscor coke, Lurgi char, and petroleum coke) was shown to be similar to results obtained with the carbon dioxide reactivity test. The silicon monoxide reactivity test was able to indicate the extent to which fines were generated when the reducing agent was converted to silicon carbide. Of the reducing agents studied, Lurgi char appeared to be the most suitable for the production of ferrosilicon because it has a high reactivity towards silicon monoxide gas and high strength when converted to silicon carbide. So that industry could be given some indication of the suitability of certain reducing agents for the production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal, a reactivity scale similar to that of Tuset and Raaness was constructed that compares the volume of silicon monoxide gas required by a reducing agent to reach a carbon monoxide content of 10 per cent in the off-gas during the conversion of the reducing agent to silicon carbide. This scale assists in the selection of those reducing agents that require less silicon monoxide gas for conversion to silicon carbide, and that give savings in material and power costs because less silicon monoxide gas need be generated in the furnace.

OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

This paper describes the operating practice and design features of an intensive-cyanidation plant at the East Gold Plant of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited (V.R.E.M.). After the development oh cyanidation route for the treatment of gold-plant gravity concentrates by the Anglo American Research laboratories (A.A.R.L.), a full scale plant was commissioned at Western Holdings (Welkom Division) Gold Mine in March 1977, and the V.R.E.M. plant was commissioned in August 1981. Although the gravity-concentration route does not now enjoy the prominence of former times, in an existing conventional plant the intensive-cyanidation route can successfully replace mercury amalgamation.

The modeling of the uranium-leaching process, and the logging of data from a plant for the evaluation of the model, are reported. A phenomenological approach was adopted in the development of the model. A set of eight chemical reactions was chosen to represent the complex chemistry of the process, and kinetic expressions for these reactions were incorporated in differential equations representing mass and energy balances. These equations were coded in FORTRAN to form a program that simulated the process, and that allowed averaged and continuous data from the plant to be compared with the model. The planned extraction of the No. 1 shaft pillar at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine highlighted a number of potential problems. In spite of the relative shallowness, careful thought had to be given to stope phasing owing to the detrimental effect of the anticipated geology and the fact that uninterrupted hoisting was necessary. Extensive use was made of computer modellig to design the stope phasing, determine the influence of regional support and to predict the direction and magnitude of displacements in the shaft. The paper describes the success of this design approach, and measured displacements in the stoping horizon and shaft barrel are compared to those obtained from the original computer model

This paper describes the state of the art in backfilling techniques used on East Driefontein Gold Mine. Areas covered are the preparation plant, the distribution plant, the pipeline network and finally placement techniques. The in-situ performance of placed backfill has been assessed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, and results to date will be shared. Details of the backfill expansion programme that will enable this facility to be made available to all working places are included. Benefits obtained by the introduction of backfilling are described, together with certain management aspects to be considered in the control of quality and quantity of support supplied via a pipeline.

The paper identifies two zones in a Leeds flotation cell. The ratio (13)of the dissipative forces and the interfacial tension force acting on a bubble and a solid particle are shown mathematically to be proportional to the square of the particle diameter for the quiescent zone and inversely proportional to the particle diameter for the turbulent zone. To locate the range of operation, correlations were established for the bubble diameter through photography and bubble counts. 13was found to be fairly constant in the particle size range 38 to 150 ",m, and the level of turbulence unlikely to affect the bubble-particle attachment and hence the beneficiation efficiency. This was verified in a series of flotation runs with a standard Leeds cell and a modified cell of twice the height to increase the capacity of the quiescent zone. A series of tests on the size range 300 to 600 ",m showed that the turbulence level had a marked effect on the cell performance through a relative improvement in the beneficiation efficiency due to the increased height of the cell. To identify the significant variables in the size range 38 to 150 ",m, a factorial design was carried out. Promoter dosage and particle size were found to be significant, aeration rate and impeler speed being insignificant at the 95 per cent confidence level. Multiple regression correlations were established for the recovery of organic material, mineral rejection, and beneficiation efficiency.

The Gold Medal of the Institution for Mining and Metallurgy for 1978 was awarded to Adriaan Louw at the Annual General Meeting of that Institution in London on 17th May, 1979. The award was made for distinguished services to the mining industry in South Africa.
