A computer system to store, retrieve and process coal borehole and analytical data together with other geological, geographical or topographical information is described. As a result of the large volume and variety of data stored since its inception in 1979, as well as the basic versatility of the system, the National Coal Data Base has been performing a number of new tasks for which it was not originally designed. As considerable sets of data are used on almost every project, the use of statistical application programs has become an important processing tool.

Laboratory testing of the self-heating propensity of coal, using crossing-point temperature and differential thermal analysis techniques, involves the frequent recording of several temperatures. The volume of data and the desire for high accuracy of measurements motivates an automated recording system. The data which are recorded must be adjusted for calibration factors and the results presented in both graphical and tabular form. The paper describes hardware and software features of a computerised system which is being used to establish the relative propensity to self-heating of a wide variety of coals.

The application of excess shear stress as an aid to the design of mine layout is reviewed, and the critical parameters required to describe slip on a plane of weakness are noted. A design procedure that is required to model the cyclic build-up of excess shear stress is described. A number of simple examples of mine layouts on two reef planes intersecting a fault plane are then considered to illustrate the application of the design concept and to highlight some of the pitfals that may be encountered

SYNOPSIS This paper describes the size reduction of limestone smaller than 1 mm by attrition grinding, using quartz (1 to 3 mm) as the grinding medium in a laboratory rig. The ore and grinding medium were closely sized fractions, and the particle size of the grinding medium was at least three sizes larger than that of the ore. Batch tests showed that the size reduction of the feed followed two first-order rate processes: one for an apparently fast-breaking ore fraction, and a slower one for most of the ore (86 per cent). The production of fines (material smaller than 10 µm) followed a zero-order rate equation. Continuous runs showed that the process could be modelled as a perfectly mixed system provided that the discharge screen did not selectively retain coarser particles of ore. The ratio of medium to ore (both by mass and by volume) was found to have a significant effect, the most energy¬efficient grinding occurring at ratios between 1 and 2. The solids content of the slurry also had a significant effect, the greatest efficiency being obtained at 50 to 65 per cent solids (by mass). Within these energy-efficient ranges of medium-to-ore and solids content, the lower values resulted in maximum feed breakage and the higher values in maximum fines production. The most important factor in the breakage of feed was the difference in the particle size of the grinding medium and the ore; the amount of ore broken out of the feed size for a given energy input was found to increase linearly with the difference between the size of the grinding medium and that of the ore up to 2 mm. The production of fines increased similarly, but only up to a difference of about 1,2 mm, when it levelled off at about 5 kg/kW ? h. The mechanism proposed for attritioning is mainly the abrasion of 1 µm planes of limestone along the crystal axes, with some fracturing along existing lines of weakness. The energy consumption of nearly 200 kW ? h per ton of product smaller than 10 µm appears to be higher than that in other types of milling. It is concluded that the value of attrition milling lies in its selectivity; in this work, only the softer limestone and virtually none of the hard quartz grinding medium was comminuted.

Splaine, in opening the discussion on Mr Perlman's paper, asked whether the model, as fitted by data up to 1963, predicted the rise in the price of copper in 1967, and whether the model could be used to capitalize on short-term price fluctuations.Answering the second question first, Mr Perlman said that the horizon used is six months to one year. In the very short term the activities of speculators obscured the effect of the fundamental econometric variables. This effect, however, was removed if one moved to a longer term, say, quarterly. In 1963 the model had predicted a price rise in 1964 and 1965 and a drop in price in 1966. The rise in 1967 had been caused by a strike, and imponderables such as large strikes were difficult to include in the model since they were unpredictable. Model simulation can be used to show the effect of strikes on price and the effect of small strikes is small.Mr B. R. van Rooyen said that because models are both calibrated and tested on historical data a bias was introduced which gave rise to an overoptimistic estimate of the accuracy of the forecasts. To this Mr Perlman replied that there seemed to be no alternative to the use of historical data for calibrating and testing models, and thus little hope of avoiding the bias. A second point made by Mr. van Rooyen was that manage¬ment tended to be suspicious of complex models and that frequently more heuristic models were sufficiently accurate and preferable for investment decisions. He added that if management were not involved in the model building the econometrician might easily go astray, Mr Perlman replied that symbiosis between data analysts and users of the model was essential and that the experience of the practitioner must be reflected in the model.Mr M. R. Fuller-Good remarked that a clear understanding of future price trends was essential for effective capital planning, and asked, first, how one went from the compiled data on supply and demand to the determination of their effect on price, record, whether necessary data, for example, capacities, could be obtained timeously, and, third, when strikes restricted supply, whether stockpiling by consumers induced large price fluctuations."

Satellite observation of mine-dump vegetation by B. P. GILBERTSON, M.Sc. (Phys.) (Visitor) and D. T. WILLlAMSON, B.A., LLB., B.A. Hons. (Visitor) NASA's first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-I) was launched on 23rd July, 1972, and has subsequently gathered multispectral imagery of most of Southern Africa from an orbital altitude of 900 km. Images of the Witwaters rand area have been studied in an attempt to differentiate between mine dumps having varying degrees of vegetative cover. At this stage it is clear that the various mine dumps can be located and identified, and differences in vegetative cover can be seen and measured. Patterns of vegetative growth, some characteristic to particular dumps, can also be seen.

The performance of Iscor's four-kiln plant, which will be the largest coal-based plant in the world producing sponge iron, will undoubtedly be watched with great interest by steelmakers throughout the world. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.

Slimes disposal at South African gold mines by M. MROST*. M.Sc. (Rand) (Fellow) The soil mechanics, civil engineering, and environmental considerations applicable to the construction of slimes dams on the Witwatersrand gold mines are discussed. It is concluded that, though the procedures used in the construction of dam embankments do not accord with the best possible practice, they are entirely adequate in current local circumstances, provided that proper precautions are taken to ensure that the wall foundations are sufficiently permeable and strong, and that the dams are protected against erosion. If current trends towards larger mining and metallurgical complexes continue, it may become necessary to build larger, higher dams, and to adopt slimes embankmentbuilding practices that are inherently more reliable.

Column flotation has been developed over the past ten years as an alternative to conventional flotation. It has been used mainly in the cleaning applications of sulphide flotation, where its ability to wash the froth of entrained gangue and produce a higher-grade product has given it a distinct advantage over other technology. The benefits of column flotation can be summarized as follows: Improved concentrate gradeby 2 to 5 per cent . Significantly lower operating costs . Savings in capital investment . Superior control. Since the initial development of the equipment, a number of design improvements have been developed that now form the basis of the Cominco column-cell design. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of those design innovations, and present some typical industrial results.

"In my Presidential address last year `The Institute in Retrospect and Prospect', I briefly reviewed the past activities of our Institute, I commented on the dynamic growth of the mineral activity of this country and of the great contribution towards this growth made by members of this Institute. I maintained that there was still further growth to come, pointing out that our future would be very much dependent on the availability and skills of our mining and metallurgical men. This Institute had, therefore, a most important task ahead to ensure that this country would have the necessary skilled engineers to develop our mineral industry so that we would be able to compete successfully in the wide world. In my address I highlighted many of the major achievements of our members and of our Institute. In today's review, I have no wish to repeat myself and I would, therefore, ask members and visitors to regard this review as complementary to my presidential address. I must also refer you to the very full resume of our affairs written for a special brochure in March, 1944, by E. H. Johnson, a founder member, on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary. There is no need to repeat what was given there, rather I will attempt to bring that history up to date. Our Institute was founded under the name of Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa on 24th March, 1894, by a group of chemists and metallurgists The name was changed to Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa early in 1903, and in July, 1956 became The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We were not the first technical organisation in South Africa, the S.A. Association of Engineers and Architects having been formed in 1892. In that year also the British Institution of Mining and Metallurgy started in London. The heavy-minerals plant at the Palabora Mining Company treats 25 to 30 kt of new feed daily. The U3Og value of the ore averages approximately 40 p.p.m. The circuit consists of four stages of upgrading on 68 Reichert cones, fol. lowed by a jig and 30 table decks. The paper describes how feed-distribution problems have been overcome and the methods used for monitoring and controlling the cone performance. The adaptation of a standard jig for the recovery of fine minerals is discussed, and a method of 'table agglomeration, for the recovery of coarse refractory copper sulphide is described. The tables consist of polyurethane-covered fibreglass decks, and their operation is controlled according to measurements of the uranothorianite content of the concentrates and middlings by means of a nuclear scintillation counter. The upgrading ratio of the uranium mineral by gravity concentration is 1000:I, baddeleyite (ZrO.) being recovered as a by product.

A Special General Meeting of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was held at Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 20th August, 1986. Mr H.E. James (President) was in the chair and declared the meeting open at 15h45. Background The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to consider a number of amendments to the SAIMM constitution. The proposed changes had been set out in detail in a document that had been mailed to all members on 4th July, 1986. He then briefly reviewed the background to the proposals, which is outlined in the Preface to the Annual Report (page 357 of this issue). The Chairman added that the Executive Committee of SACPE at its meeting on the 8th August, 1986, had resolved that the proposed amendments to the SAIMM constitution did comply with the requirements of Regulation RI525 dated 17th July, 1981, regarding the recognition by SACPE of a society as a Professional Engineering Institute.

At the Hansa Mine in Dortmund, Germany, coarse run-of-mine coal, up to 60 mm in particle size, has been brought to the surface hydraulically from a depth of 850 m since November 1977. Hoisting is done by a three-chamber pipefeeder, by means of which up to 400 t/h can be lifted. The pipefeeder operates without problems, and has so far shown itself to be efficient and reliable. Vertical hoisting can be carried out by water supplied from the surface, from underground, or from a surface water supply in combination with minewater from underground. Water that flows into the mine, which would in any event have to be pumped to the surface, can be utilized for hoisting operations. The energy costs per ton of coal for a lifting height of 850 m vary between 41 and 62 South African cents, and therefore lie within the range of costs that apply to conventional hoisting.

This paper captures the essential steps employed in developing Outotec?s new FloatForceTM mechanism. The development of a flotation mechanism essentially revolves around the efficient transfer of installed power, or capital cost, to optimum flotation performance. Optimum flotation performance will be achieved if a balance between metallurgical results, operating and capital costs is maintained. The development of the FloatForceTM mechanism was done by careful evaluation of each of these three areas. This paper focuses on how experience, CFD and laboratory equipment, pilot and plant tests are used to test and evaluate a new flotation mechanism. Validated variables include mixing profile, power draw and local air hold-up. Metallurgical and mechanical design considerations are not covered in this paper. Besides using the FloatForceTM mechanism in new flotation equipment, the FloatForceTM mechanism can be used in existing flotation cell installations, thus enabling improvements in the mixing profiles, solids suspension and metallurgical performance of operating flotation circuits. Results of several tests carried out in existing plant operations are presented.

It is a great privilege for me to have been asked to present the closing address to this most successful symposium on backfill in the South African mining industry. When I accepted this invitation I did not fully appreciate the tremendous progress made on most aspects of backfilling in the last few years. The number and quality of papers presented at this symposium bear testimony to the mining industry's determination and success in introducing backfill in underground mines to improve strata control and environmental conditions, and to provide better protection to mineworkers against the hazards of rockbursts and rockfalls. Many contributions demonstrated that these benefits can be achieved at a reasonable cost, and in some instances improved grade and higher rate of face advance result in improved economics. In my closing address I will attempt to summarize the progress made in the various aspects of backfilling underground workings and to identify those areas which, in my opinion, require further attention and effort. I will undertake this review under the following main headings: ? fundamentals of backfilling; ? design of backfill systems; ? operation of backfill systems; ? control of backfill systems; and other aspects of backfill systems.

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.
