The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women?s employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

The effect of varying aliphatic, olefinic, and aromatic groups in the N- and S-positions of dithiocarbamates was investigated in the selective and bulk flotation of a mixed copper-lead-zinc-iron ore. Selective and bulk flotation were found to be dependent on the type of functional group, as well as on the position of substitution.

Slow pyrolysis experiments were caried out on samples of coal from north em Natal having a volatile mater content ranging between 10 and 25 per cent by mass and a constant particle-size distribution. The tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure in a helium atmosphere, and ata heating rate of 10 KImin and a final temperature of 1220 K. The pyrolysis products were taken as coke and volatile mater (tar and eight other species), and tMir respective yields were measured. The experimental results were used in the modification of an existing mathematical model and in the derivation of new corelations for some of the parameters of the model, so that the volatile products of a coal can be predicted from ultimate and proximate analyses of the coal. The pyrolysis tests showed good agreement between the model predictions and the experimental results.

Feasibility studies of the on-stream analysis of lead in mineral slurries by S. K. KAWATRA. P. Eng. (Canada). Ph.D. (Australia). M.Sc. (India) (Visitor) Instruments for the measurement of lead in mineral slurries by the use of isotopes can be based on the absorption of Iow-energy gamma rays, backscattering of beta particles, or X-ray fluorescence. The merits of each method are discussed, and the reasons for the selection of the beta-backscattering technique are given. A system using this technique has been designed, constructed, and tested on samples of concentrates from an industrial concentrator.

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

A series of blasting experiments was carried out in an up-dip stope of a gold mine using short-perioddelay electric detonators. The main object of the investigation was to show the interactive effects of short-delay blasting. The delay range over which observations were made was restricted to between 10 and 200 ms. To quantify the blast results, data were collected on fragmentation, throw, position of muckpile, and ground vibration. For comparative purposes, blasting parameters for conventional pyrotechnic sequential firing were also measured. The paper describes the most relevant parts of the study and gives the experimental results. The interactive effects of short-delay blasting are analysed, and some aspects of the breaking mechanism are discussed.

The note describes an exercise on the simulation of the frequency and size of seismic events on the basis of the frequency distribution of the events and their inter-arrival times (Le. the frequency distribution of the time elapsed between events). From the suite of available results, those of one simulation for a period of three months are included. The tentative conclusions drawn from the exercise indicate that the overall seismic activity in an area can be predicted for a time period, that structurally complex areas will have a higher incidence of seismic events than other areas, and that the position and time of an event cannot be predicted by the use of a wide-spread system such as that used at present.

1. ANTECEDENTS This present communication refers to the results of the research project entitled "Training in the correct use of chemical oxygen self rescue apparatus and also an analysis of apparatus autonomy", carried out under the auspices of the Specific Collaboration Agreement signed between the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias (Spain) and INSALUD (National Silicosis Institute, Spain). The antecedents of this project lie in work undertaken by the National Silicosis Institute aimed at optimising efficiency in the use of chemical oxygen self rescuers through improvements in worker training. To be precise, by means of Agreements drawn up between the above-mentioned parties, a simulator was designed and incorporated as the basis of a training station within the " Fundación Barredo" of the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias. This has been operative since the year 2001 and, up to the present, 2300 Asturian coal mine workers have been trained there. What prompted this activity was the observation of various errors in the use of the self rescuers, deriving from their innate characteristics, especially with respect to the sensation of discomfort - the high temperature and humidity of the breathed oxygen, resistance and inconvenience - and limited autonomy. It was precisely this insight that, in critical situations, lack of familiarity with the conditions of discomfort likely to be experienced during the evacuation process might lead to rejection of the equipment, with fatal consequences, that has justified the setting up of this training and simulation centre. The centre is able to provide all mine workers with the necessary training, and experience of the characteristic sensations experienced when using such equipment (Fig.. 1).

After a short summary of the historical milestones of the submerged arc furnace, the paper will highlight different applications and their specific smelting furnace requirements in the non-ferrous area. Additionally, aspects of rectangular furnace design and the features of the copper cooling system for the side wall will be emphasized. Finally a state-of-the-art design tool as well as a new invention to improve slag cleaning technology will be featured, which shows great potentials especially for the PGM and copper related industry. Based on an actual experiment used as an example, assessment of the surface deformation due to undermining, the extensive possibilities of using a 3-D physical model and application results in practice are demonstrated. The role of gravity concentration in the recovery of gold from typical South African gold ores is described. The location of the concentrator in the grinding circuit is discussed, and typical capacities and operating costs are given. Some operating problems are mentioned, but the performance of concentrating equipment is not dealt with in detail since this to some extent depends on the nature of the ore. It is concluded that the main benefits are an improved recovery of coarse gold and a reduction in soluble loss. The use of a long leaching time and a carbon-in-pulp recovery system may eliminate the need for gravity concentration. but gravity concentration is seen as an inexpensive way of improving the recovery on existing plants.

Recommendations are given for the design of multi-stage spray chambers in which air flows horizontally through water sprays. A detailed description is given of one such spray chamber at Hartebeestfontein gold mine that is used for bulk cooling of the incoming ventilation air, and that has been constructed according to these recommendations. A method for predicting the performance parameters of horizontal multi-stage spray chambers is given, and the method is illustrated with some examples. The method is equally applicable to spray chambers in which the water, rather than the air, is cooled.

Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur. In South Africa reprocessing used oil into industrial fuel is commercially attractive. The reprocessed product is sold as a substitute for heavy fuel oil that is derived from crude oil (Rose Foundation, 2008). The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the use of petroleum products such as oil, petrol and diesel in Driefontein Gold Mine. The recovery of oil through recycling has costs implications to the mine while the release of petroleum hydrocarbons due to the poor management of the use of petroleum products has potential to cause pollution and negatively affect soil and water. Environmental legislation such as the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28, 2002) requires that such negative impacts to the environment be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation cost of pollution caused by petroleum products to the environment increases operational costs in business. Field assessment is conducted to identify the main sources of petroleum product contamination such as leaks in piping, overfills and petroleum spills. The areas that require mitigation would be mapped in the study. Recommendations for mitigation measures will focus on using the best practicable environmental option (BPEO) as well as the best available technology not exceeding excessive cost (BATNEEC). The recovery of oil from the mining industry is generally low and very poor. In this study, the effect of proper management of petroleum products to the mine?s operational costs is investigated and compared to there mediation costs of the impacts caused due to poor management of these products. The study investigates the financial benefit that could be obtained from proper environmental practices and efficient usage of petroleum products in the mining.

Deposition of gold-bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin was controlled by hydraulic processes. These resulted in the formation of independent sedimentological facies areas having different statistics and semivariograms. Consequently, when there are indications that data are a mixture of statistical populations, it is important to decompose them into statistical subpopulations and analyse these independently. However, in the case of actual mining, physical position and extent of sub- populations are important and, as a consequence, any decomposition of data must take space into account if it is to be of use. An algorithm for the spatial decomposition of data into its sub-populations is described and is applied to real data taken from the Witwatersrand. Two distinct areas with completely different geostatistical parameters were revealed.

Some important aspects of the design of rock-cutting systems remain relatively unexplored. Two areas of practical significance in this context form the subject of this paper: cutting in jointed or fissured rock, and groove-deepening. A series of controlled laboratory experiments on the performance of disc cutters in jointed rock showed that the spatial and geometrical configuration of jointed rock masses needs to be taken into consideration in the design of mechanized rock excavating systems. One series of experiments showed that, under favourable geometric conditions, the energy required to cut in a jointed rock mass is at least half that required to cut otherwise intact rock. Groove-deepening-the progressive deepening of a groove by successive passes of a cutter-is a potential operational feature with most mechanized rock-excavating systems. Laboratory experiments revealed an important fundamental cycle of events associated with disc cutters when progressively deepening a groove in intact rock. Furthermore, in contrast to pick cutting, groove-deepening by discs is shown to be an efficient operation and one that should not necessarily be avoided. This can be directly attributed to increased interaction between the disc cutters as the result of an increase in magnitude of the lateral forces generated as a groove is deepened.

An account is given of the performance of a 37 MVA electric-arc .furnace in which bottom stirring with inert gas by an indirect-contact stirring-plug system was applied. The system, which was developed and patented by Thyssen-Stahl AG, and which is the first inert gas stirring system to be installed in South Africa, was commissioned in January 1992. Initial problems were experienced due to the blockage of stirring plugs by molten steel. The causes of these malfunctions are examined, and an account is given of how they were overcome. The system is described and evaluated. A comparison with direct-contact stirring systems shows why Iscor Vereeniging Works considered it to be more suitable for their Vaal Melt Shop. The results show that, through the successful application qf this technology, Iscor Vereeniging Works has achieved an annual cost saving of more than R2,5 million.

The support of stopes by means of yielding timber props, with or without hydraulic props, is common in the mining industry. This paper discusses the ability of these support systems to absorb energy during a rockburst, and further investigates their capability to withstand a range of ground velocities. It is found that the rate of stope closure prior to a rockburst strongly influences the behaviour of these support systems during the rockburst. It is recommended that hydraulic props be used in conjunction with yielding timber props in these conditions, and that yielding timber props with an increased yield range are desirable.

Heavy mineral deposits are a source of the economic important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite, pseudorutile and rutile. In the Ranobe heavy minerals deposit these minerals occur not only as primary unaltered minerals but also display various degrees of alteration resulting in an increased titanium content of the deposit. The presence of the various FeTi-oxide minerals? textural relations is a reflection of geological processes and may ultimately be used to unravel the geological history of the deposit. These minerals have different chemical and physical properties that influence metallurgical tests and the quality of products produced from various mineral beneficiation streams. It is therefore of metallurgical importance that the minerals are well characterized, defined and monitored during preliminary beneficiation tests.
