Recent advances in mechanistic ball mill modelling are expected to allow for more accurate predictions that overcome the well-known limitations of phenomenological approaches, including their inability to predict the effect of liner geometry and their wear, in grinding. Although able to describe continuous operation, the UFRJ model of ball mills has only been validated in the past in mills that operate in batch mode, either in laboratory or pilot scale. The present work demonstrates the application of the mechanistic UFRJ ball mill model to predict fine grinding of iron ore in a pelletising plant in Brazil, the first application of such a mechanistic modelling in continuous mode. It shows that the model provides accurate descriptions of flows after iterations in a closed-circuit with hydrocyclones. Keywords: Ball mill, iron ore, grinding, modelling, particle breakage

This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. The occurrence, properties, and uses of andalusite, and its advantages over other refractory minerals and materials, are discussed. Ore reserves are given for the five producing areas, and statistics on production, export sales, and prices are included to illustrate the growth of the industry since the early 1960s. The mining and beneficiation procedures are described, with special reference to new techniques in concentration and magnetic separation. As fines dumps represent a considerable source of andalusite, possible methods of recovery are discussed. . The outlook for the future appears favourable, and possible competition from other sources and substitute refractory minerals are mentioned. It is concluded that the industry is in a sound position to maintain South Africa's status as the world's foremost producer and supplier of andalusite.

Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) is one of the most common reagents used in the froth flotation process, in which it is an efficient dispersant as well as a powerful gangue minerals depressant. Due to its high affinity with a lot of minerals, mostly silicates, it adsorbs on their surfaces and prevents the adsorption of the collectors, maintaining them hydrophilic. Hence, Na2SiO3 is widely used in the flotation separation of rare earth minerals, zinc minerals, iron minerals, scheelite, fluorite, apatite, and many other minerals. For decades, authors have demonstrated higher efficiency of Na2SiO3 when it is used in combination with sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), a common pH regulator. Among many well-known depressants, this system presented the best efficiency for many ores, including the Tabuaço scheelitebearing skarn studied herein. However, the mechanisms resulting in these strong positive synergistic effects are not well understood at the moment. Hence, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to this ore, considered as a case study, to optimize the depressing conditions and to study deeply the flotation behavior of this system. Strong synergistic effects between the two reagents were exhibited by the RSM, mostly affecting the scheelite, fluorite, and calcium-bearing silicates recoveries. This was attributed to surface carbonation of the minerals by Na2CO3, subsequently leading to a better depression by Na2SiO3. Overall, a 1:1 ratio between the two reagents displayed the best results in terms of WO3 grade and recovery. To gain understanding in the molecular mechanisms responsible for the aforementioned synergistic effects, FTIR studies were combined with state-of-the-art molecular modelling (Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics at 300 K) on fluorite, an archetype of calcium minerals. Managers need quality information for effective decision making. This demand, at the present time, is being fulfilled by the increased use of computers via information systems, decision support systems and management information systems. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems. The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. In- corporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined.

(Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. In view of an urgent need for a simple means of simulating the behaviour of stratified rock masses, a long-dormant linear model is revived, generalized, and discussed in some depth. The model is piecewise homogeneous, consisting of a pile of homogeneous isotropic laminae in which the interfaces between beds are parallel and free of shear stresses and cohesion. The continuity of stresses and normal displacements is assured across the bedding planes and, to maintain simplicity, the theory of thin plates is used as the kernel of the model. The paper covers the case where the rock mass consists of discrete beds in which the layers are arranged either heterogeneously or systematically. The stratification is regarded as uniform when all the layers are of the same thickness and their Young's modulus changes exponentially with depth; and as homogeneous when all the laminae have identical thickness and properties. The case of uniform stratification is also treated on the basis of an equivalent quasi-continuum derived from the basic model. Attention is focused on the derivation of influence functions. It is demonstrated that the quasi-continuous models, when they are available, can replace their distinct-layer counterparts. The homogeneous quasi-continuum, which permits the derivation of its influence functions in closed form, facilitates the determination of the roof and floor convergence. In the case of a significant class of problems, the convergence distribution is defined by a second-order differential equation in the xy plane, which simplifies to a Poisson's equation if the mining excavations are unsupported. With this result, the paper prepares for the solution of a host of practical problems. These solutions are presented in a series of papers that are in the course of publication.

To determine the characteristics of a mineral deposit, the usual practice is to take samples, analyse the properties of those samples and infer the characteristics of the deposit from these properties. This analysis can be done using statistical methods. In the present work we are concerned with two types of statistical approaches, classical statistics and spatial statistics. If one uses classical statistics to represent the properties of the sample values, the assumption is made that the values are realizations of a random variable. The relative positions of the samples are ignored, and it is assumed that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal probability of being selected. The likely presence of trends, zones of enrichment, or pay shoots in the mineralization, is ignored. The fact that two samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken far apart is also not taken into consideration. In contrast, spatial statistics will be used if one chooses to consider that the sample values are realizations of random functions. On this hypothesis, the value of a sample is a function of its position in the mineralization of the deposit, and the relative position of the samples is taken into consideration. The similarity between sample values is quantified as a function of the distance between samples and this relationship represents the foundation of spatial statistics. There are few situations where classical statistics can be used. The assumption that all sample values in the mineral deposit have an equal likelihood of being represented will be satisfied only if the sample values are randomly distributed, or if the sample positions are random. Sample values are in fact never randomly distributed within a mineral deposit. Further- more, geologists usually avoid taking samples at random (random sampling), as it is correctly accepted that samples located on a regular grid, or approximately on a regular grid, give more information than randomly located samples. In practice, classical statistics should be used only in the early stages of exploration, when the number of samples available is relatively small and the distances between samples are large. In these circumstances, and whenever the information available is not sufficient to permit the use of spatial statistics, application of the methods described in this chapter is justified.

"The primary objective of any mining business unit is to make profit by extracting, processing, and selling minerals from a particular mineral deposit. It is important to optimize extraction of the mineral resource given time, capital, and space constraints. Mineral extraction is often associated with uncertainty due to variable technical and human factors. Technical factors such as grade distribution, ground conditions, and equipment reliability influence the performance of a mining production system (MPS). The performance of the MPS is also impacted by human factors such as employee skills, health, and attendance. Uncertainty associated with technical and human factors often leads to actual output differing from what was planned. Therefore an in-depth analysis of the significant causes of deviations from the planned outcomes is relevant.In this paper we investigate the empirical relationships between inputs and outputs in a MPS in order to assist management in directing efforts at key production drivers. Once a MPS has been empirically characterized, more effort and resources can be focused on the key decision-making variables (DMVs) in order to meet the planned outcomes.For a typical underground, tabular, narrow-reef conventional drill-andblast platinum mine the face advance, face length mined, number of teams, team efficiencies, and team size have a statistically significant relationship with the centares (m²) produced, which is a key performance indicator (KPI). The production function derived in this study can be used to align the physical, technical, and human factors together to predict the optimal output level. The most significant production lever of the MPS is the face advance. The MPS exists within the mineral extraction link of the complete mining value chain. It represents the stage where mining companies have the opportunity, through production, to start generating returns on the investments undertaken. The locations of potential reserves of chromite ores throughout the world are discussed. Reference is made to the marked changes in international trade in chromite ores during the past ten to fifteen years, and to the change in locality of the production of ferochromium aloys, which is curently largely carried out in the country of origin of the ores. The influence of these changes has been very profound in South Africa, which has the largest smelting capacity and the largest production of ferochromium aloys in the world. A proportion of South African ore is stil exported to meet the demands for the production of chromium chemicals and refractories, including a large tonnage of foundry sands. Ferochromium smelters in South Africa have a capacity of virtualy 1 Mt of aloy per annum. Nearly al this development has taken place since the introduction of the argon-oxygen decarburization (A.O.D.) process for the smelting of stainless steels. Formerly, expensive Iow-carbon ferochromium aloys were required as raw materials, but the AO.D. process, which is being used world wide, permits the use of high-carbon ferrochromium, the main product of the smelters in this country. The production in South Africa of chromium-containing corrosion- and heat-resistant steels is stil on a relatively smal scale, but serious atention is being paid to the exploitation of low-carbon weldable feritic chromium steel.

A number of issues relating to the computational aspects of pillar design are addressed in this paper. The computation of average pillar stress values is important when attempting to establish criteria for pillar design and in the analysis of the stability of tabular pillar layouts. One of the default ?classic? numerical methods that are used to determine pillar stresses is the displacement discontinuity method. In many instances it is not clearly understood that this approach does suffer from some limitations, particularly in relation to the fact that in coarse element simulations, the simulated average pillar stress (APS) can depend on the chosen mesh size. The nature of this error is highlighted in this paper and some strategies are suggested to bound the magnitude of these errors. It is demonstrated as well that the popular linear stiffness approximation to pillar or seam compressibility does appear to allow reasonably accurate estimates of the average pillar stress when either the pillar height is varied or when the seam modulus differs from the host rock modulus. A practical implication of this study is that if the seam modulus is noticeably lower than that of the host rock, such as for coal seams, it is important to use a linear stiffness constitutive model for the pillars rather than a ?rigid? pillar assumption. This added complexity seems unnecessary, however, when simulating hard rock pillars in mines where the seam modulus is very similar to that of the surrounding rock.

Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust, and in its purest form has a tin content of 78,6 per cent. South Africa has limited deposits of the mineral, and by its exploitation contributes about 2 per cent of the world's production. This paper gives a brief history of tin mining in South Africa, which dates back almost 3000 years. Over the intervening years, many tin-mining operations have flourished and as quickly disappeared. At present there are only three tin mines in operation, and a description is given of the methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting that are used. The properties and uses of tin are listed, together with relevant statistics.

This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

This paper reviews lead as a commodity, starting with a brief historical outline and dealing with the various uses of lead in some detail. It then goes on to discuss some statistics in relation to the production and reserves of lead, before sketching its mode of occurence. The topics are approached in regard both to the world and to South Africa, with the emphasis on the later. The mining and concentration of lead at Black Mountain Mine at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province are detailed, before a general account is given of the smelting, hydrometalurgical extraction, and refining of lead, together with the processes used in these activities. The paper concludes with a discussion of safety and health in regard to lead and a brief look at the commodity's future.

In initial laboratory tests with a travelling submerged jet on artificially prepared clay it was found that the cavity depth is dependent on the stagnation pressure of the jet and the undrained shear strength of the clay. In addition, it has been observed that the increase in cavity depth with jet pressure is stronger at higher jet pressures. It is assumed that this can be explained by cavitation of the jet at higher jet pressures. At cavitation a cone of bubbles is formed around the jet, which reduces the exchange of momentum between the jet and the surrounding water. This results in a higher jet velocity and a higher stagnation pressure at a specified distance from the nozzle exit. In literature, no relation between the jet pressure of a free submerged cavitating jet and stagnation pressures was found. Additional tests were carried out to determine this relationship. Because practical dredging occurs at relatively large water depths, these tests were performed in a pressure vessel at different pressure levels. It is concluded that the efficiency of a jet (defined as the stagnation pressure at a certain distance divided by the jet pressure), for stand-off-distances smaller than 45 times the nozzle diameter, increases significantly by cavitation in comparison to the non-cavitating situation. However, the jet pressure required for a fully developed cavitation cone increases strongly with water depth. At dredging depths of 20 m and more, the necessary jet pressures are higher than normally applied in dredging practice. Thus in spite of the importance of cavitation in laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure, in normal dredging practice cavitation is of less importance.
