This paper discusses system integration and installation of High-Tec systems in underground mines. ABB has the capability to be a System Integrator and co-operates with partners in different areas of technology. Today it is difficult to find one Company that is responsible for the complete Automation System. The design of the system is also dependent on the caving procedure that is currently being used in mines. Most of the engineering must be done during the feasibility study and the design phase. Any mistakes made during these phases will be costly to rectify in the commissioning phase. The paper will also include a presentation of the benefit of using Automation in an Underground Mine, and the importance of integration with the people component. Most of the experience and discussions in this paper are from different technologies that have been developed in Scandinavia and adopted from LKAB in Kiruna. The author of this paper was responsible for the Automation projects in Kiruna Mine during1994 - 1999. These projects include: • Broadband communication of data, audio and compressed video in one data stream. • Control System for Haulage -1045m • Automation of Load Haulage and Dumping machines (LHD) • Control of Production Drilling Rigs from a Central Control Room.

ABSTRACT: The Urft dam, the Diemel dam and the Eder dam are three old masonry damslocated in Germany. The paper describes the rehabilitation measures and the correspondingstability analyses carried out to adjust the dams to today's standards. Remedial works such as theexcavation of inspection galleries, the installation of a grout curtain with a downstream drainagescreen as well as the installation of pre-stressed permanent tendons were carried out. In all threecases the stability of the upgraded dam could be proven on the basis of finite element analyses. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Urft-, Diemel- und Edertalsperre sind drei alte deutscheSchwergewichtsmauern aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk. Im Beitrag werden Instandsetzungsmaß-nahmen und Standsicherheitsnachweise beschrieben, die erforderlich waren, um die Staumauernan den heutigen Stand der Technik anzupassen. Hierzu wurden Kontrollgänge aufgefahren,Dichtungsschleier mit luftseitiger Dränage sowie vorgespannte Daueranker hergestellt. In allendrei Fällen konnte unter Berücksichtigung der Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen die Standsicherheit derMauer auf der Grundlage von Berechnungen nach der Methode der finiten Elemente nachgewiesenwerden. RÉSUMÉ: Les barrages de Urft, Diemel et Eder sont trois barrages-poids vieux allemandsconstruit de maçonnerie de moellon. Dans cet article, opérations de remise en état et preuves destabilité sont décrits, qui étaient nécessaires pour adapter les barrages à l'état de la techniqueactuelle. À cet effet, des galeries de contrôle étaient creusés, voiles d'étanchéité avec des drains àla face aval et tirants précontraints permanents étaient fabriqués. Dans tous les trois cas, tenantcompte des opérations de remise en état, la stabilité de la barrage pouvait être prouvée à partir decalculs selon la méthode des éléments finis.

Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). It is of great importance to prevent a leakage of hazardous substances from underground storage plants, because this certainly leads to a fatal disaster for human societies. Therefore, effective grouting system needs to be developed, which can inject cement grout into low-permeable rock masses. Authors have carried out a series of laboratory injection tests using a fracture model and field tests in low-permeable rock masses. In these tests, not only was the superiority of dynamic grouting confirmed, but also the relationship between grouting-efficiency and injection parameters was investigated. In this paper, the results of laboratory injection tests and field tests together with theoretical approaches to them are mentioned. L’empêchement de la fuite des substances dangereuses des galeries de stockage est un traitement très important pour protéger la société humaine contre la comtamination catastrophique. Par conséquent, un procédé d’injection efficace doit être mis au point, qui peut injecter du coulis de ciment dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Les auteurs ont effectué une série d'essais d'injection en laboratoire en utilisant un modèle de rupture et d'essais sur le terrain dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Dans ces essais, était non seulement la supériorité du l’injection dynamique confirmée, mais aussi le rapport entre l’efficacité de l’injection et les paramètres d'injection a été étudié. Dans cet article, les résultats des essais d'injection en laboratoire et des essais sur le terrain ainsi que les méthodes théoriques pour les essais sont mentionnés. Die Autoren haben eine Serie von Laboreinspritzungsversuchen mit einem Bruchmodell und Feldversuche an wenig durchlässigen Felsenmassen durchgeführt. Diese Versuche zeigten nicht nur die Überlegenheit des dynamischen Verfugens, sondern wurde dabei auch das Verhältnis zwischen Verfugen und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie den Einspritzungparametern untersucht. In dieser Studie werden die Ergebnisse der Laboreinspritzungtests und die Feldversuche zusammen mit den entsprechenden theoretischen Ansätzen erläutert.

Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluents is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10mg/l cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a pre-neutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40g/l NaOH. A pre-neutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

Several aspects of the behaviour and properties of backfills consisting of cemented cyclone underflow tailings are illustrated by means of examples, and guidelines are given on the optimization of the performance of cemented fills. The stretch characteristics of the geofabric used to contain freshly placed backfill are described, as well as the relationship between these characteristics and the forces acting on retaining barricades. The properties required to achieve a self-supporting, stable free face in cemented backfill are explored, and a graphic relationship between stable height and shear strength is presented and compared with that for uncemented (classified) tailings. After a description of the characteristics of Witwatersrand quartzite gold-tailings backfill and commonly used cements, the process of drainage and air entry into backfill is outlined. Following this, the early-age gain in strength and the shear-strength characteristics, as well as the compressibility characteristics of cemented backfill, are described. Two phenomena that are potentially damaging to cemented backfill are seismic effects (or blasting acceleration) and the closure that takes place during the curing of cement. Investigations show that neither of these phenomena is actually significantly deleterious to gold-tailings backfill: liquefaction does not Occur as a result of seismicity, and hydration of cemented fill is not significantly impeded by closure.

The purchasing-power parity theory is used to establish a pattern of relationship between these two factors, and to develop a more logical approach to the long-term forecasting of metal prices in the currency of the country in which the mine is situated.

Interface levels in flotation columns are generally measured with the aid of a pressure-sensitive Instrument, e.g. a differential-pressure cell. This paper criticizes the use of this type of measurement, and discusses other methods that are claimed to give more accurate measures of interface levels. The paper focuses on the development of methods based on the measurement of conductivity across the froth-slurry interface. These are often sabotaged by variations in the conductivity of the feed slurry, particularly when the pH of the slurry IS being controlled, e.g. In sulphide flotation. Methods of improving the accuracy and reliability of this technique are described. The result IS a robust, easy-to maintain level-control scheme that successfully rejects large disturbances in plant operation (including a 5:1 change in slurry conductivity) while controlling levels to an accuracy of I 4 cm.

"In the case of feasibility assessments or feasibility studies, an important point of discussion is often how to calculate the capital (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) of a plant. Generally, there is also the request to know how the CAPEX varies when the size of the plant is increased. Nowadays, many databases give an indication of specific equipment costs in relation to the production rate. These data are based on cost information from equipment suppliers and have to be continuously updated by the owner of the database. The approach presented here is a model which allows sizing of process equipment, for example a leach tank, based on process data in combination with the calculation of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it calculates the CAPEX based on construction material cost and adequate machining surcharges. Thus, a single cost model for a leach tank is adequate for both copper and other hydrometallurgical plants and stays valid with changing construction material prices. To summarize, the advantage of this model is the more versatile approach and thus the flexibility due to the inclusion of design aspects, process and mechanical engineering aspects and an updatable database. The database, which is in regard to material cost and is the basis for the cost estimation, is easily updatable from commonly accessible data. This model thus approaches the procedures of an engineering company when designing a plant and executing a cost calculation. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgy nowadays plays an important role in processing of primary and secondary resources. In copper metallurgy, hydrometallurgy accounts for roughly 20 % of worldwide primary production, especially in the case of oxide or low copper-containing ores. Zinc smelters changed their method of production from a pyrometallurgical-dominated concept decades ago to mainly hydrometallurgical routes today. Gold production processes using leaching, especially, have a long history without any development which would not be competitive if not based on hydrometallurgical concepts (Pawlek, 1983; Winnacker-Küchler, 2006)."

From the point of view of the environmental impact created, dimension stone mining is a relatively benign industry. There are no emissions besides those of the diesel powered earthmoving equipment utilised in its extraction and a small amount of blasting gases. Contamination of water resources is only likely in the event of petrochemical spillages from storage facilities and equipment, and these can largely be either prevented or cleaned up effectively. The major environmental impacts are of a visual nature, while in sensitive areas, habitat destruction and the destruction of archaeological heritage may become significant impacts. The dimension stone industry has grown at an average rate of over 7% per annum since 1986, and is forecast to continue growing at this rate for the foreseeable future. The cumulative environmental impact of the industry will thus become more significant over time. This paper discusses the environmental impacts of dimension stone mining and recommends effective means for dealing with the practical aspects of reclamation and mine closure in dimension stone mining within the context of environmentally responsible business practices. The discussion focuses mainly on the operations of the Finstone Group in Southern Africa, which are considered to be world leaders in the application of environmental management within the dimension stone mining industry, although reference is also made to other situations which the authors have encountered at dimension stone quarries around the world.

An investigation was carried out to determine whether a numerical model could be constructed that would produce results that realistically represent actual ground deformations in and around a vertical shaft. The ground deformation was brought about by the partial extraction of the shaft pillar. A special characteristic of the rock masses, affected by the shaft pillar extraction, was that the shaft was located in poor quality rock masses. After the extraction of a portion of the shaft pillar, excessive deformations occurred at the shaft/reef intersection. Therefore, a decision was taken to extract the entire shaft pillar protecting the shaft by a proposed waste-cut across the shaft. The effects of stress and displacement on the shaft were investigated by using inelastic numerical modelling in different stages. A calibrated numerical model was constructed producing modelled results comparable to the actual displacements along the shaft. Des recherches ont été poursuivies pour déterminer si on pouvait construire un modèle numérique qui donnerait des résultats représentant avec réalisme les déformations réelles du terrain à l’intérieur et autour d’un puits vertical. La déformation du terrain était entraînée par l’extraction partielle du massif de protection. Une caractéristique spéciale des masses rocheuses, affectées par l’extraction du massif de protection, était que le puits était situé dans des masses rocheuses de qualité inférieure. Après l’extraction d’une portion du massif de protection, des déformations excessives se sont produites à l’intersection du puits avec le filon. Par conséquent, la décision a été prise d’extraire le massif de protection en entier par une coupe de déblais à travers le puits. Les effets de contraintes et décalage furent étudiés en utilisant une modélisation numérique inélastique à des stages différents. Un modèle numérique calibré fut construit, donnant des résultats modelés comparables aux décalages réels le long du puits. Eine Untersuchung wurde durchgeführt um festzustellen, ob ein numerisches Modell konstruiert werden könnte, das Resultate produzieren würde, welche realistisch aktuelle Bodendeformationen in und um einen vertikale Schacht darstellen. Die Bodendeformation resultierte teilweise aus der Extraktion des Schachtpfeiler. Eine spezielle Eigenschaft der Gesteinsmassen, beeinflußt durch die Schachtpfeilerextraktion, war, daß der Schacht in Gesteinsmassen geringer Qualität situiert war. Nach der Extraktion eines Teils der Schachtpfeiler, traten übermäßige Deformationen am Schacht/Riff Kreuzungspunkt auf. Folglich wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, die gesamten Schachtpfosten zu extrahieren und den Schacht mittels eines geplanten Verlustschnittes quer zum Schacht zu schützen. Die Auswirkungen des Druckes und der Versetzung auf den Schacht wurden unter Anwendung unelastischer numerischer Modelle in unterschiedlichen Stadien untersucht. Ein kalibriertes numerisches Modell wurde konstruiert, welches berechenete Ergebnisse mit den tatsächlichen Versetzungen entlang des Schachtes vergleicht.

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants. Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process

Abstract This paper presents the results of a series of creep tests performed on a total of nine samples of Lac du Bonnet granite from the Underground Research Laboratory near Pinawa, Canada. Each of the nine samples were subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of the average uniaxial compressive strength of the granite and were maintained at that level of constant loading for periods of time ranging between a few minutes and several months. Acoustic emission was recorded in order to monitor the development and accumulation of brittle microfracture damage in the samples throughout the long-term loading. According to previously published theoretical predictions and field results, as well as similar experimental results of creep tests in granite, samples should fail when loaded to 70% of their UCS for an extended period of time. Six of the samples did not fail when subjected to stresses in excess of 80% of their UCS over periods of several months and were subsequently subjected to uniaxial compression to failure. The average strength of the samples that had previously been subjected to long-term loading were comparable to the average published strength of this rock. Three of the nine samples had increased end confinement and these three samples failed under long term loading. Résumé Cet article présente les résultats d&apos;une série d&apos;essais de fluage de roche exécutés sur neuf échantillons de granite de Lac du Bonnet, du laboratoire souterrain de recherches près de Pinawa, Canada. Chacun des neuf échantillons a été alors soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de la résistance à la UCS moyenne du granit et a été maintenu à ce niveau du chargement constant pendant des périodes s&apos;étendant entre quelques minutes et plusieurs mois. L&apos;émission acoustique a été enregistrée pendant les essais afin d&apos;obtenir des indications des dommages pendant le chargement à long terme. Selon des résultats théoriques précédemment édités et les résultats expérimentaux semblables des essais à long terme en granite, échantillons devrait échouer si chargé à 70% de leur UCS pendant une période prolongée. Six des échantillons n&apos;ont pas cassé quant ils ont été soumis aux charges au-dessus de 80% de leur UCS et ont été plus tard soumis à la compression uniaxiale à la rupture. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel beschreibt die Resultate von Kriechversuchen, die an neun Proben aus dem Lac du Bonnet Granit des "Underground Research Laboratory" bei Pinawa in Kanada durchgeführt wurden. Jede der neun Proben wurde Drücken unterworfen, die mehr als 80% der einaxialen Druckfestigkeit des Granites entsprechen. Diese Drücke wurden für verschiedene Zeitspannen von wenigen Minuten bis zu einigen Monaten auf einem konstanten Niveau gehalten. Wider Erwarten trat bei sechs der Proben kein Versagen ein, als sie mit über 80% ihrer einaxialen Druckfestigkeit über mehrere Monate belastet wurden; daher wurden sie im Anschluss bei einaxialer Kompression zum Versagen gebracht. Die mittleren Festigkeiten der im Langzeittest verwendeten Proben sind vergleichbar mit den normalerweise für diesen Gesteinstyp angegebenen Festigkeiten. Drei der neun Proben versagten unter der Langzeitbelastung; diese drei Proben hatten eine erhöhte Endflächenreibung.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor&apos; is discussed.

In recent years attempts have been made to develop software packages for shallow seismic refraction data analysis. In most cases, mainframe computers were used which were generally non-interactive, did not support graphics and were unfriendly to operate. With these facts in mind, a user-friendly interactive processing package written in PASCAL has been developed for the IBM PC. The package allows the following operations to be performed. (1) data tying, equalisation of reciprocal and common shot times; (2) overburden velocity analysis; (3) refraction leg identification on time-distance plots; (4) elevation correction of refractor data; (5) forward and backward phantoming; refraction leg extrapolation; (6) &apos;bedrock&apos; velocity analysis; (7) &apos;time-depth&apos; plot computation; (8) depth calculation. Numbers (6) - (8) above involve Palmer&apos;s generalised reciprocal technique of refraction data interpretation. The program is extremely flexible and makes much use of interactive high resolution graphics and &apos;popup&apos; onscreen menus. The velocity analysis sections have statistical routines built in to provide error estimation. The programs allow data interpretation to take place in the field with a portable microcomputer while the data are still being collected; this is obviously not possible with any cumbersome mainframe-based software. Hence it becomes possible to see the effects of varying the data collection parameters (such as geophone spacing) upon the resulting interpretation and so enable adjustments to be made where necessary. Hard copies of the data may be obtained at all stages of the interpretation process using a small (A3) plotter, or the graphics may be dumped to a dot- matrix printer if a suitable plotter is not available.
