"This paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield. The resources occur at a depth greater than 250 m and the thickness of the coal is roughly 110 m, but the top 50 m comprises coal intercalated with shale and the bottom 60 m contains five seams with sandstone and shale partings. Various factors affecting multiple seam mining at these great depths are discussed with reference to lessons learned from local and international experience on multi-seam mining. Field geological and geotechnical data was utilized to assess the stability of the roof of the seams. There is no specific rock mass rating for the Waterberg area, therefore approximate coal mine roof rating (CMRR) values were used to propose appropriate support strategies. Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) was used to analyse the strength of the parting or interburden between the various seams, the mining sequence, and the interaction between the various seams.The research indicated that it is possible to mine seams with a low CMRR at high mining rates using longwall mining, although support for gateroads is expected to be expensive, time-consuming and onerous to install, and will impact gateroad development rates. It will not be possible to simultaneously mine zones in close proximity and failure of the interburden is predicted, thus dangerous mining conditions are anticipated. However, it will be possible to mine just two of the eleven zones using longwall mining. IntroductionThis paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield using bord and pillar and longwall mining. Figure 1 illustrates the location of the Waterberg coalfield relative to other coalfields in South Africa, while Figure 2 shows the areas containing deep and shallow resources. The Waterberg resources are expected to contribute to South Africa’s future energy requirements, and are currently exploited at the Grootegeluk open pit mine. Grootegeluk produces coal mainly for a power station, with the higher quality product supplied as metallurgical coal. The deposit is technically unique and challenging, being a multi-seam coal deposit with a total of 12 seams over a thickness of 110 m as shown in Figure 3, including Zone 5. There is currently limited knowledge on the multi-seam mining of the deep Waterberg resources. Multi-seam mining utilizing the bord and pillar method has been practised in South Africa before, but at a depth of less than 100 m in the Witbank coalfields. Multi-seam mining in thin seams has also been performed in the Natal coalfields at a depth of less than 160 m, but mostly using bord and pillar mining and secondary mining (partial pillar extraction)."

The aspect of sustainability of ferroalloy processes has long been a serious matter for consideration in many of the world?s industrialized countries. A number of countries can be named where ferroalloy plants that were once flourishing, have all but disappeared. One of the most important factors playing a role in this type of occurrence is the cost and availability of quality raw materials. Given that all natural resources will be depleted with time, users are compelled to develop new processes that are sustainable in the changing environment. The DC arc smelting furnace is one such process that has proved itself, and has gained increasing popularity over the past two decades. This process, amongst other benefits, directly addresses the use of more readily available and more affordable raw materials in ferroalloy production. Since early in the new millennium, GLPS has been involved in various studies for different clients of furnaces for the production of ferroalloys. Two of these recent studies have culminated in the design, construction and commissioning of DC arc furnaces for the production of ferrochrome. One of these furnaces is a 10 MW unit at Mogale Alloys, and the other a 60 MW unit at the Middelburg plant of Samancor Chrome. This paper discusses the approach taken in the design and construction of these two furnaces, which, although varying significantly in size and capacity, are very similar in many other aspects of their design. There are many near-surface deposits with considerable vertical extent that have the potential to be mined by a combined method of open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, there is often a point called ?transition depth? where a decision has to be made whether to continue deepening the pit or change to underground methods. Recently, optimization of the transition from open-pit to underground operation has become an important challenge in mining engineering. Optimally, to model the transition problem on the basis of maximization of the profit from open-pit and underground mining, (0-1) integer programming has been used. In this method, block economic values of open-pit and underground methods should be imported to the transition model. A hypothetical example is presented in order to assess the model in detail.

The vast majority of the roughly 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA each year use resin cartridges1. About 4.5 million of these bolts are installed using a mechanical shell in addition to the resin to create an active (pre-tensioned) bolt. Over 1 million of the bolts are passive cable bolts and typically have an effective grout length of 1.2 m, regardless of the cable length, which could be as long as 6 m. The successful performance of the resin grouted bolts depends on several parameters, including the annular gap between the bolt and hole wall, which should be relatively small, ideally from 3 mm to 5 mm. This requirement, combined with the high viscosity of the resin, produces a high back-pressure that can cause the bolt being installed to buckle or not be installed to standard. It is this back-pressure that limits the effective grout length with passive cable bolts and causes the mechanically anchored bolt failures (typically called ?spinners? where the mechanical shell does not anchor). This creates potentially unsafe conditions and wastes time and money. A purpose, built rig was used to mimic underground installations and record the back-pressures during full scale applications in the laboratory. This information was used, and is still being used, to reduce the failures and sub-standard installations by producing improved designs. In addition, a flow model was calibrated that can act qualitatively to estimate the back-pressures and can be used as a crude screening process before full scale prototypes are built and tested. To date, the results obtained have been used to stop the use of a mechanical shell due to the proven higher rate of failures. A new, improved mechanical shell is being field tested and another system is underdevelopment. The use of the rig is therefore ongoing to develop improved mechanical anchor systems. It is too early for real data; however, anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that significant improvements can and will be made.

Ensuring that all the head ropes on a multi-rope friction winder share the load equally has been a design and maintenance issue since they were first developed. Accurate machining of the rope grooves is necessary to meet this objective. Early analysis of the change of rope loads for ropes in grooves that are mismatched in depth treated the grooves as rigid. Groove depth tolerances deduced from this analysis are stringent and difficult to achieve in practice. Test work indicated that the inherent flexibility of groove lining materials alleviates the load-sharing problem. However, no analysis of rope load changes due to mismatched flexible grooves has been published. In this paper we develop new equations for the rope load variation for flexible grooves. By allowing flexibility to reduce to zero, the corresponding rigid rope groove equations are obtained. New criteria for tolerable groove depth variations are developed from this analysis, which depend on the flexibility of the groove lining material.

The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

The Namakwa Sands heavy mineral deposit is located along the West Coast of South Africa and the mine is a world class producer of high quality zircon, ilmenite and rutile concentrates from essentially unconsolidated marine and aeolian sands of Cainozoic age. The objective of this study was to characterize rutile with respect to distribution, grain size, textures, colour and mineral chemistry within the Namakwa Sands orebody with the aim to explain its overall poor recovery. A representative suite of heavy mineral concentrates from various sections of the orebody and stages in the recovery circuit has been investigated microscopically and by means of SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS. The rutile grain size distribution displays a wide range and is directly related to its variable chemistry and consequently density. In placer deposits such as Namakwa Sands, mineral sorting is a function of hydraulic equivalence, and high density grains are smaller than the lighter grains when deposited under similar conditions. Grain size is also a function of sediment maturity, and the highly mature red aeolians and (RAS) component of the deposit has a coarser grain size than the less mature orange feldspathic marine sands (OFS). The above primary characteristics of rutile are responsible for the loss of the coarse-grained fraction during screening and, given the empirically determined relationship that increased substitution elements reduce conductivity, also during electrostatic separation. Provenance studies using geothermometry have shown that the heavy mineral suite has been sourced mainly by the proximal medium-to high-grade Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The positive relationship between substitution elements and temperature of formation explains their high concentration in rutile of this deposit. The heterogeneity of rutile, produced by the combination of a high temperature primary source and the typical marine-aeolian placer genesis is deposit specific and unfortunately not conducive to high recovery levels in the current Namakwa Sands beneficiation circuit.

As real-time air quality monitoring becomes more prevalent in US underground mines, it is important to provide the highest data reliability with the fewest possible sensors. Real-time sensors remain costly, and these costs are not exclusively financial; the time required to install, calibrate, and maintain real-time sensors poses a large barrier to widespread implementation. Current atmospheric monitoring systems typically rely on displaying point-specific values. This requires operators to infer real-time airborne contamination distributions. Monitoring and control software utilizing mine ventilation network (MVN) solvers has been implemented in limited cases because of their ability to simulate ventilation systems quickly, but these solvers use a one-dimensional representation of the mine, limiting spatial resolution of estimated distributions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has likewise been considered as a means to improve spatial resolution, but processing times prevent its use as a basis for monitoring and control. For the real-time monitoring of airborne contamination distributions, we propose a spatial interpolation method that can estimate the distribution of airborne contaminants in near-real time. This method provides a middle ground between fast processing times and increased spatial resolution. With the use of a pathfinding algorithm and optimization through absolute percentage error minimization, this method outperforms spatial interpolation with a Euclidean distance. By providing contamination distribution information to operators, this method and its derivatives stand to outperform current atmospheric monitoring systems.

In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. The KX36 kimberlite was discovered using a high-resolution gradient aeromagnetic survey, with follow-up detailed ground geophysics and deflation soil sampling used to assess and prioritize the geophysical anomalies identified from the initial aeromagnetic survey. Prospect drilling intersected kimberlite in the first hole drilled on the KX36 anomaly. Preliminary evaluation has shown that KX36 is diamondiferous, and a more detailed evaluation and sampling programme is currently underway. The area around KX36 has been prospected by numerous companies over the last few decades, with sporadic kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) recoveries in regional deflation sampling indicating the possible presence of kimberlites, but without sufficient resolution to ?home in? on specific targets. Previous (lower resolution) aeromagnetic surveys and soil sampling campaigns also did not define anomalies with sufficient detail to guide prospect drilling effectively. The discovery of KX36 highlights the prospectivity of areas of Botswana under deep Kalahari cover that have been explored previously. Personnel management has undergone a remarkable change over the course of the past ten years. Personnel departments have played an increasingly important role, which today requires highly trained people and cannot be adequately served by the lesser qualified officials of yesteryear. Changes in the mining industry that stem from the demand for skilled labour to keep pace with technological developments and the mechanization of mines today demand that emphasis should be placed on the maximum utilization of manpower. Maximum utilization of manpower calls for more scientific and effective methods of recruiting, selecting, training, and placing workers so as to offer them the best opportunities for development and promotion, which naturally ensure a minimum labour turnover and eliminate labour unrest. This can be achieved only if well-qualified and properly trained personnel administrators are prepared to accept the challenge and apply themselves purposefully by assisting line mangement with the attainment of the company's corporate objectives.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI. However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI. In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

How this simple plant generates a large revenue stream. The concept behind the Tailings Scavenging Plant (TSP) is simple: it is a non-complicated modular plant which is designed to be more stable than upstream plants. This, plus the use of ?high energy?, enables the plant to recover any metal missed by the upstream operation. Impala Platinum?Mineral process started pilot plant exercises in June 2003. The pilot plant ran for one year before the capital for the full-scale plant was approved. This year was used to motivate, design and cost a full-scale plant. The metal produced during the pilot and feasibility study enabled this part of the project to run at a small profit. The scale-up to full-scale was relatively simple as the pilot plant had a capacity of 180 m3/hrand the full-scale plant was designed for a capacity of 550 m3/h. The design for the full scale plant was completed in May 2003, with ground breaking taking place on 19 May 2003. The construction phase of the project went well with the commissioning of the first two modules taking place on 22 October 2003. The remaining two modules were commissioned two weeks later. The plant was at full capacity by the 20 November 2003. A review of the plants performance for the first 5 production months is as follows: the plant has required only a few minor modifications and additions, it has run well in excess of 95%availability with no major wear apparent. In addition to this, the plant has produced 3 times the metal forecast.

The mining industry in South Africa faces real challenges with regard to the reduction of safety-related incidents. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the need for alternative interventions in addition to other safety improvement strategies already employed on mines. It furthermore supports an existing paradigm: incident investigations. An investigation into fatalities in the South African mining industry shows that although great progress has been achieved through the reduction in fatalities in all sectors of the industry over the last few years, more can and should be done to achieve status of ?zero harm?. Fatalities and lost time injuries on mines result not only in large financial losses, but also in disruptions of mining operations in general through Section 54 stoppages to resolve the situation. The approach of the paper is therefore not to try and prove whether there is high fatality rate and/or lost time injuries, but in what way incident reconstruction simulations (IRS) can have an impact in the future prevention of such incidents. The challenge therefore lies in the utilization of pro-active systems that would show employees the possible outcomes of being exposed to certain hazards. In real life, these incidents cannot be re-enacted and in most cases we can only learn through the previous mistakes of others. A virtual reality (VR) education and training system will enable employees to be ?exposed? to different hazards in a safe environment, and simulation, in a ?forgiving? environment, of the possible consequences of unsafe acts. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), unsafe acts and unsafe conditions are indirect causes of safety-related incidents, but there are also direct causes; for example, unplanned release of energy and/or hazardous material, and basic causes, for example, management safety policies, personal factors, and environmental factors. The administrative workload associated with any incident investigation places a large burden on the investigation team, and in most cases other employees are informed through vague administrative processes what the ?real cause? for the incident/accident was. New preventative strategies are often put in place without showing the employees what the real causes of the incident/accident were. This can be mitigated through the use of interactive VR simulations/animations of the hazards that they are exposed to and how to deal with them. If VR interventions are not used as proposed by this paper, the real causes and consequences of almost all fatalities and lost time injuries may never be fully understood. This paper also emphasizes what potential impact IRS could have on the prevention of future mine incidents as part and parcel of a pro-active risk prevention strategy. The intention is therefore not to replace any other risk prevention strategies, but to visually enhance the reality of the incident. Discussion H. J. S. Kriek*: During 1956 Iscor became interested in the acid smelting in a blast furnace of siliceous ores containing 15 per cent silica. This interest was as a result of the successful acid smelting in Germany at a CaO/SiO2-ratio of between 0.4 and 0.8. Acid smelting can become an economic proposition due to a reduction in slag volume accompanied by a lowering of the coke rate. Paschke and Hannel1 found that a free flowing slag (i.e. viscosities of less than two poise) would not be obtained at C/S-ratios lower than 0.82 and that the addition of 3 to 4 per cent alkalies became necessary. In titanium bearing slags it was established that maximum fluidity is obtained with 10 per cent TiO2. Acid smelting resulted in increased sulphur pickup with decreasing O/S-ratio and desulphurization with soda-ash outside the blast furnace was necessary. At Iscor Mr B. B. Segal established that, for slags with (CaO+MgO)/SiO2-ratios of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7, the addition of alkalies and TiO2 resulted in a substantial decrease in melting point and also of viscosity. At a (CaO+ MgO)/ ratio of 0.53 the addition of 10 per cent TiO2 is as effective as the addition of 3.75 per cent alkalies. This means that a blast furnace can be run without the addition of alkalies and consequently the detrimental effect of alkalies on the lining can be avoided; also that fluid slags with 5 to 15 per cent MgO and 8 to 10 per cent Al203 can be obtained with 10 per cent TiO present. (CaO+ MgO)/SiO2-ratios smaller than 0.5 the addition of titania resulted in a decrease in melting point and also in an increase in viscosity. In ceramic crucibles the slag did not become more viscous with time but thickened appreciably when held in graphite crucibles. No titanium carbonitride could be detected and only Ti20a was found. Prof Howat also did not obtain the TiC-TiN solid solution and therefore it appears that the thickening of the slag is not solely due to the formation of the titanium carbonitrides. This is in agreement with the work of Michailov and Belyakova2 who found that TiO2 decreased the viscosity of acid slags and increased the viscosity of basic slags; that titanium sesquioxide (Ti203) and titanium monoxide (TiO) increased the viscosity of both acid and basic slags and that titanium carbide, which is found in larger amounts in basic slags than in acid slags, considerably increases the viscosity of both acid and basic slags. Patzak et al3 describes the following oxygen deficient titanias, viz Ti2O, TiO, Ti203, Ti3O5, Ti4O7, Ti5O9, Ti6O11- Ti10O9,Ti7O13,Ti8O15 and Ti9O17. Until about 1959 a fair amount of data was available on the viscosity of normal slags to which titania was added2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. At Iscor an electromagnetic viscometer based on the viscometer developed by Bockris10 was built. Progress was very slow as our main attention was centred around problems associated with the operation of the Rotor process. During 1962 and 1963 two papers containing fundamental work on the viscosities of slags in the systems CaO-SiO2-TiO211 and CaO-SiO2-TiO2 at 0 per cent A1203, 10 per cent Al203 and 20 per cent Al20312 appeared. The work of Ross and Ohno obviated the necessity of any further work by Iscor on the viscosity of blast furnace slags containing titania. Ross gave the following optimum compositions for blast furnace slags containing titania. Titania % Lime % Silica % Lime/Silica-ratio 20 30-42 38-50 0.6-1.10 30 27-36 34-43 0.63-1.06 40 24-32 28-36 0.66-1.14 The optimum temperature is 1,500°C because at this temperature the largest workable composition range exists. Higher temperatures result in narrower optimum composition ranges and in increased rates of thickening. The factors affecting the rate of thickening were also investigated by Ross and Ohno, as the main problem with slags containing titania is not finding compositions which are fluid at operating temperatures but the thickening due to a lack of oxygen. With these slags when there is insufficient oxygen to co-ordinate each silicon atom with its own individual shell of four oxygen ions, some sharing of oxygen ions must occur, resulting in the formation of large silicate ions and a rise in viscosity. The formation of oxygen deficient titania can be prevented as long as iron oxide or manganese oxide remain in the liquid slag. Iwase13 and also Viens, Camp bell and Rogers14 obtained in the experimental smelting of ilmenite ores fluid slags with more than 3 to 5 per cent manganese oxide and ferrous oxide in the slags. It appears that titaniferous ores can be smelted in blast furnaces under the following conditions: (1) Acid slag operation, i.e. at C/S-ratios from O.6-1.0. (2) Dolomite can be used as a flux as MgO is a network modifier. (3) The Al2O3-content must be less than 15 per cent as alumina promotes thickening of the slag and decreases the optimum composition range. (4) The hearth temperature must not exceed 1,500°C. 10th COMMONWEALTH MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS-CANADA, 1974 The Commonwealth Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions has received and accepted an invitation from The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the 10th Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress to be convened in Canada in April, 1974, immediately following the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. It is proposed that the Congress centre will be Montreal and that, after technical sessions, tours of operations will be arranged. Further information will be issued in due course by The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and enquiries should be addressed to the Executive Director of the Institute, 906-1117 Ste. NOTICE TO ALL STUDENT MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGY The Institute offers each year for competition among Student Members of the Institute a prize, or prizes, should entries so warrant it, of up to the value of R100 to be awarded to the Student Member or Members who submit the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute. In the case of Student Members who are in full time study at a university the dissertation or thesis which they may have to write in part fulfilment of their university curriculum may be accepted provided it is presented in a manner and on a topic suitable for publication in the Journal. An account is given of the development of ferritic stainless steels since their discovery in the early years of this century. The alloys became very widely used in the 1950s, the market during that decade being driven strongly by a demand for automobile trim made of ferritic stainless steel. The production of ferritic stainless steel declined as a proportion of the total at the end of the 1950s as consumer preferences changed. However, the market is now growing strongly again, this time driven by a demand for oxidation-resistant alloys for motor-vehicle exhaust systems. The tonnages produced, applications, and market shares of the various alloys are discussed and compared. Trends in world stainless-steel production, product forms, technological development, and usage are examined.
