The Technical Programme Committee-Metals Technology of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, in association with its Vaal Triangle Branch, held a one-day colloquium on 18th April, 1989, the theme being 'Ferous Pyrometalurgy: A Challenge for South Africa'. The venue was the Auditorium 100 at the campus of the Vaal Triangle Technikon in Vanderbijlpark. Project and contract management A Project and Contract Management Conference is to be held on 19th and 20th September, 1989, at the C SIR, Pretoria. Powder metallurgy The PM 90 exhibition is to be held in Wembley, London, from 2nd to 6th July, 1990. The technological advances in efficient, rapid, and non-destructive hyperspectral core logging systems for systematic mineral mapping have led to the discovery and exploitation of new mineral deposits Hyperspectral imaging in the long-wave infrared range has been recently used successfully to identify various phosphatebearing minerals (monazite, xenotime, and britholite), with limited work on apatite associated with mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions. In this study we investigate the effectiveness of a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system with long-wave infrared (LWIR) bandwidthsto identify apatite in the Upper Zone of the Bushveld Complex. The accuracy of the HSI results was validated by mineralogical and geochemical data. The two apatite-enriched zones detected by HSI suggesting widespread development of apatite throughout the uppermost 600 m of the Upper Zone. The lower apatite-enriched zone is approximately 40 m thick, while the upper apatite-enriched zone is about 23 m thick, consistent with previous thickness determinations by traditional logging and analytical methods. Spectral mixing observed in the response of apatite is ascribed either to the common association of apatite and olivine in these rocks, or to differences between the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral image and the size of apatite grains. The VNIR-SWIR wavelength region did not show prominent spectral features of apatite. Nonetheless, HSI in the LWIR range is effective in mapping apatite and should therefore be considered as an exploration tool. This research advances our knowledge of the reflectance spectroscopy of REE-bearing minerals, which makes it easier to detect, identify, and quantify REE-bearing silicate minerals by HSI.

The principal objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough literature review on the status of project readiness mechanisms, tools, techniques, and frameworks for mining projects. The review aimed at identifying common readiness evaluation criteria as well as potential shortcomings that prevent the establishment of a generalizable project readiness index. The literature review included a general overview of capital project performances and the importance of project readiness assessments to improve project delivery success. The study then progressed towards literature involving mining projects and how this differs from infrastructure and industrial project assessments. The paper concludes by summarizing the current state of mining project readiness assessments, the unique and differentiating factors to be considered, and suggests recommendations towards the development of generalizable readiness assessment criteria for mining projects.

Open-pit mine planning includes the determination of a long-term open-pit mine production scheduling (OMPS) plan. The OMPS plan is generally a three-dimensional (3D) block extraction sequence that seeks to maximise the net present value (NPV) of future cash flows, while complying with technical and operational constraints. The OMPS problem is computationally complex because it involves the analysis of large datasets, while simultaneously incorporating both multiple hard and soft constraints. The OMPS problem has been solved using deterministic or exact approaches, heuristic, and metaheuristic models. When compared to heuristic and metaheuristic models, deterministic approaches tend to take much longer to solve the OMPS problem when the number of constraints increases. Therefore, this paper presents a metaheuristic model which utilises a genetic algorithm (GA) framework to solve the OMPS problem. The GA-based model was applied to the Newman1 and Zuck Small mining instances, which are publicly available from the online MineLib database. The NPVs for the OMPS plan generated using the GA-based model for the two case studies were compared to the best-known published MineLib solutions obtained using the TopoSort heuristic model at the time of this study. For the Newman1 instance the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$6.6 million for the GA-based solution and US$5.1 million for the TopoSort solution. For the Zuck Small mining instance, the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$99.8 million for the GA-based solution and US$102.5 mil for the TopoSort solution. These results show that the GA-based model produced comparable solutions to some of the best-known solutions, thus, indicating strong potential application of GA-based models to solve OMPS problems.

The goal of the study described here is to develop objective. quantitative methods for estimating the outcome probabilities of exploratory oil wells. The study employs the 're-experience' approach, in which historical data are used in a manner which attempts to recreate the past. Our past experience, of course, is the principal guide to the future. To appraise present-day oil prospects, however, we must analyze prospects that have been drilled in terms of how these former prospects were interpreted before they were drilled. An analysis of how they are interpreted after they were drilled is an inadequate guide to the future because our hindsight knowledge is superior to our foresight knowledge. Objective calculation of future outcome probabilities, then, requires that we attempt to treat past information in a manner analogous to that in which we must treat present information in forecasting future outcomes.

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.

"The aim of the audit was to determine whether the mining project environmental impact assessments (EIAs) in Kenya are undertaken according to international best practice. A sample of 50 EIA reports for the 2007–2016 period was evaluated using 18 criteria in the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) guidelines. The findings showed that only two criteria were considered ‘excellent’ according to the ELAW guidelines, namely baseline environmental assessment and prediction of physical impacts. Six criteria were found to be ‘satisfactory’, including prediction of social impacts, analysis of alternative options, and impact mitigation. The reports were quite weak in terms of: consideration of all phases in the mining cycle, environmental regulatory framework, prediction of biological impacts, stakeholder consultation and engagement, integration of human right issues, and integration of climate change and cost-benefit analysis. It is therefore recommended that the Kenyan National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) should consider tightening the EIA terms and conditions in the approval of statutory terms of reference (ToR) for full-scale mining EIAs to ensure improved performance of EIA as a tool for environmental protection. IntroductionThe nexus between society and the environment has continued to generate interest because the environment is the source of goods and services that sustain the various needs of human beings as outlined in the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Armstrong and Peart, 2000; Sutton 2004; Chakrabarti 2007; Strange and Bayley 2008). All the five generic categories of societal needs, namely physiological needs (food, water, clothing, medicines, etc.), residential and occupational needs (shelter, transport, energy, etc.), economic needs (tradeable goods and services), leisure and recreational needs (tourism), and cultural and spiritual needs (e.g. sacred resources and ecosystems) (Mwaura et al. 2016) are addressed by the environment. Consequently, a wide range of development sectors have been established around the world in order to address the above needs (Lederer, Galtung, and Antal, 1980; Rammelsberg et al., 2006; Noonan, 2014). All these development sectors rely entirely on the environment for their proper functioning, as shown in Table I."

A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

The need to move towards faster and safer mine development is a key priority in mining houses globally. In addition to this, South Africa faces an array of challenges introduced by labour-intensive operations; hence a study was conducted to look into improving development rates and labour productivity, specifically in the areas where trackbound flat-end development is required. The aim of the study was to propose a method to deliver fit-for-purpose tracked tunnels that advanced at a rate of one blast per end every single working day. A major part of the study was to optimize the selection of an appropriate trackless fleet and mitigate any constraints introduced with the mechanization. This was done by creating scenarios, based on a typical case study, looking into the aspects around safety, mine design, mine activity cycling, men and machine requirements, service installations, and trackless-trackbound interfaces. The case study was based on a deep-level gold mine developing twin headings with connectings; however, with the move to extend and deepen platinum operations it is foreseen that twin end development will become more prevalent due to ventilation, logistical, and other requirements. With the introduction of the trackless mechanized system suggested, development rates of 56 m of system advance are expected (189 m total development), with on an average of three headings and fixed blast times. Scenarios run with multi-blast conditions yield expectations of 75 m/month advance of the system, significantly higher than the conventional performance seen today.

A computational model of a submerged arc furnace (SAF) used in the production of ferrochrome is presented. The model‘s intended use is to investigate the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the raw materials affect burden distribution and electrical resistance within the furnace. The model is built on the discrete element method and calculates the mechanical interactions of particle distributions resulting from the flow motion of typical raw materials used in the smelting of chromium ore. This model excludes the effects of thermodynamics, furnace chemistry, and heat transfer. It illustrates how the consumption of materials (chromite pellets, flux, and reductant) is affected by changes in electrode length, reductant fractions, and reductant sizing and density during the formation of a reductant bed. The resistance calculation algorithm developed by Mintek was applied to construct networks developed from particle contacts, which can quantitatively generate estimates of the electrode-to-electrode and electrode-to-bath electrical conduction conditions.

"Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Reinforcement and surface support are part of an integrated system that transfers and shares loaduntil the excavation surface is stabilized or until the ground support system fails. Steel mesh is the most popular primary surface support element in underground hard rock mines in Canada. Mesh straps are a secondary surface support that provide additional containment as they distribute the load between and across the reinforcement elements. This investigation addresses the role of steel properties, and in particular steel chemistry, in the long-term performance of mesh and mesh straps when exposed to an aggressive corrosive environment. It reports on comparative accelerated corrosion studies to compare the resistance to corrosion of different surface support elements. This has significant implications on the choice of surface support and the anticipated rehabilitation requirements.

The South African mineral resource royalty system, initiated in 2010, employs a hybrid ad valorem approach tied to profitability ratios. This rate is then applied to the total revenue from mineral sales. In this article we explore how the profitability ratio in the mineral resource royalty formulae interacts with the gold tax formula as applied to South African gold mines, devising a strategy for cut-off grade optimization. The study focuses on nine narrow, tabular-reef (Witwatersrand) gold mines. The approach involves a mixed-integer cut-off grade optimizer utilizing Excel Solver, incorporating relevant royalty and income tax formulae. Different mineral resource royalty cost scenarios were examined. Ignoring these costs in the break-even analysis lowers the cut-off grade but slightly boosts profits compared to considering expected costs. The developed optimizer model, recognizing the profitability aspect of the mineral resource royalty and income tax formulae, yielded a 6% lower cut-off grade than the base case. This is significant for increasing mine life. While the profit differences are marginal (0.2% compared to the break-even base case), substantial improvements were noted: a 6% increase in stope tons above cut-off grade, and a 4% rise in total revenue. Enhanced resource utilization (3% extra gold kilograms) reduces necessary development and overall costs, allowing for a reduction in the cut-off grade and ultimately, more profit.

The flotation separation of apatite and calcium-bearing gangue minerals (dolomite and calcite) has always been a problem in phosphate ore mineral processing research. The crystal structure and surface properties of minerals have an important influence on their floatability. In this paper, the theoretical and comparative analysis of the crystal structure and surface electronic properties of apatite, dolomite and calcite were carried out using the first principle calculation based on density functional theory. As a supplement and validation, the surface wettability of three minerals under different flotation conditions were compared and analysed by contact angle test. The results theoretically revealed that the three calcium-bearing mineral surfaces have similar surface electronic properties and thus exhibit similar floatability. In the flotation process, the anion difference between apatite and carbonate gangue should be fully utilised, and the minerals can be separated only after surface modification by flotation reagent. The contact angle test shows that phosphate and carbonate can be separated by using anion flotation collector after surface modification with acid. It is expected that this research is of interest for understanding the surface structure and electronic properties of apatite and carbonate gangue minerals and providing the theoretical basis for surface interaction. Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. The FUTURE project aims to enhance seismic surveying in South African mining by integrating advanced acquisition technologies. In this paper, we detail surface and underground seismic surveys at the South Deep gold mine as part of the project. Surface seismic acquisition used co-located broadband micro-electromechanical sensors, one and three component recorders connected to geophones, distributed acoustic sensing using a straight fibre optic cable, along with a 6 ton broadband seismic vibrator operating with 4–180 Hz linear sweeps. In addition, underground surveys employed a combination of straight, and helically wound fibre optic cables, cabled-based and nodal sensors, along with a 500 kg drophammer mounted on a skid steer bobcat. The surface and underground seismic arrays were time synchronised using a GPS-time transmitter to allow for accurate seismic data recording in a GPS-denied environment. Results show the efficacy of these techniques in acquiring high-resolution seismic data, revealing detailed subsurface geological structures and mineralisation down to 3500 m below ground surface. Surface data revealed clear seismic reflections corresponding to the Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef. An underground P-wave velocity model exhibits low velocity anomalies that are associated with fracturing, while a P-wave reflection stack section shows significant reflections and a degree of faulting below the tunnel floor that was not observed on the surface reflection seismic data. We highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining. This study sets a benchmark for future reflection seismic surveys, paving the way for safer, more efficient, deep mineral exploration and extraction practices.
