An intensive investigation into modern roof support technology, including hy draulic and control systems, has been carried out against the perspective of global development and support behaviour on longwall faces across the Indian sub-continent. The wide ranging study examined various types and designs of modern supports used in seams of varying thickness and inclination where caving and stowing were practised. Consideration has been given to structural analysis, support resistance, the various forces acting over and on the powered supports and to support compatibility. The examination of the phy sical parameters has been allied to field experience and, together, have led to the formulation of standard designs for both the powered support structure and structural systems. A realistic mathematical model has been formulated for calculating the capacity of roof support requirements resulting from the actual behaviour of the immediate roof stratum. As a result of the work, it should be possible to readily select the most appropriate type of support sy stem for the conditions and longwall mining method that is to be employed.

Cylindrical pellets made from graphite and chromite mixtures were reduced in high-carbon ferrochromium melts at 1 600-1 695 degrees C, under an atmosphere of almost pure CO. The reduction rate, as measured by gas evolution, increased with increasing melt temperature and graphite addition and with decreasing pellet diameter or height, although reductant particle size had a very limited effect on kinetics. At a pellet size, heat and mass transfer were significant in controlling the early stages of reduction of large pellets while at chromite grain size, gas diffusion was probably a rate-controlling step. The time required for dissolution of unfluxed pellets into the melts was significantly longer than that for reduction. This indicates that pellet dissolution may be the limiting factor in determining the operating parameters for a proposed new process to produce high-carbon ferrochromium using melt circulation

Selective flocculation was investigated as a possible method of recovering values from mineral slimes which are too finely divided to be treated by conventional mineral processing methods. It has proved possible to flocculate selectively either haematite or a silicate from a stably dispersed mixture by varying the anionic character of the high-molecular-weight, partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide employed. Different separation methods have been developed for hard and soft water media. Electrokinetic and infrared techniques have been employed to elucidate the mechanism whereby selectivity has been attained in the different cases. The following influences on the various selective flocculation parameters have been investigated: (a) the level of the different reagent additions and (b) the shear conditions during and after flocculant addition. A feature of the particular system studied was the high solids content at which it was possible to achieve good selectivity. Probable reasons for this are advanced, and the possibilities and potentialities of the process are discussed.

Diesel powered equipment is currently used extensively in mining and tunnelling operations around the world due to its mobility, flexibility and through selective application to enhance productivity. However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

Sulphur isotope ratios have been determined for 81 sulphides and S and O isotope ratios for 26 barites from the Alston Block in the northern Pennine ore field. In addition, both isotope ratios have been determined for 29 evaporitic anhydrites of various ages from European and Australian localities. The consistency of the sulphate isotope ratios over a wide area of the northern Pennines, and their similarity to values for Lower Carboniferous evaporites, suggests that the sulphate originated from Lower Carboniferous connate waters. It is suggested that these mingled with warm brines rising through granitic plutons beneath Tynehead and Upper Weardale, the aqueous sulphide ion in these brines having a delta34S value of approximately +10 per mille. The delta34S values for the sulphides range from +15.0 to -5.9 per mille and show an outward zoning with higher values in the central fluorite zones and mainly negative values in the outer barite zones. The wide range of delta34S values for the sulphide S is not characteristic of magmatic S and there is no adequate local source in the Carboniferous sediments. It is suggested that formation waters, probably mainly of connate origin, sank down sufficiently deep to become heated above 200°C before rising through Caledonian granite plutons into the Carboniferous sediments, where they spread laterally to mingle with cooler sulphatic connate water. The rising fluids were hypersaline brines carrying F, Ba, Pb, Zn, Cu and S. Temperatures of deposition calculated from galena-sphalerite isotope fractionation are similar to temperatures previously determined from fluid inclusion studies.

The surface tensions of lead and lead alloys with very low concentrations of silver, tin and copper were measured by the sessile-drop method. The enrichment of silver and tin in the surface of liquid lead alloys at temperatures close to the freezing-point of lead was confirmed, which may explain the unusual behaviour of small amounts of silver and tin in lead bulllion during the sulphur-drossing step of the refining process. From the limited data available copper also appears to concentrate at the surface of the liquid alloy

An aplite ore from Guarda in northern Portugal, containing albite, microcline and quartz and muscovite gangue was studied to identify conditions for extracting the feldspar minerals. The large amounts of quantitative mineralogical data needed to evaluate grinding behaviour were provided by automated image analysis. The images were acquired on polished surfaces by measuring back-scattered electron signals produced with a microprobe. Minerals were identified from X-ray spectra and discriminated by grey level and element-characteristic X-rays. The quantities and size distributions of the minerals were determined by measuring thin sections of unbroken ore to predict the grind required to liberate the feldspars. The ore was then ground to -1.7 mm, polished sections were prepared from sieved fractions and the quantities of mineral species and apparent total liberation were determined by analysis. The predicted and measured liberations were compared and the grinding behaviour of the ore interpreted. In an appended correction, the correct version of Equation 1 is represented and Tables 3 and 6 are revised to consider all size fractions, including those coarser than 300 micrometres, in calculating the total liberation from King's fractional liberation

Mineral production in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last ten years has been confined to the sporadic production of industrial minerals—for example marble, anorthosite, limestone, talc and silica. From 1962 onwards there has been an upsurge in mineral exploration in the Highlands, increasing in tempo from 1966 onwards due to the efforts of the Institute of Geological Sciences, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, and private and public companies. Geological, chemical and economic aspects of some of the more interesting mineral prospects are discussed: these include anorthosite, feldspar, magnetite, quartzite and brucite marble. Reference is made to a geochemical survey undertaken in the Rosehall district of Sutherland, the results obtained being summarised. Problems that affect the future of mineral exploration in the Highlands are stated.

The paper, presented at the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 8th April 1916, presents experimental work undertaken to observe the quenching effect of different substances, to find the most efficient of these substances, and to arrive at a possible explanation of their preventive action. The coal-dusts experimented with were such as passed through a 100-mesh sieve (10,000 holes to the square inch), and were obtained by grinding the coals. The quenching substances, used in as fine a state of division as possible, included gypsum, dried Chance mud, quicklime, magnesia, magnesia alba (levis), anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, soda-crystals, Glauber salts, ground shale and boiler-ashes

There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. Practices and procedures to prevent ignitions are discussed in the light of the risks from current mining methods.

"The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

Risk management is concerned with the whole spectrum of financial, geological, engineering, legal, governmental, social and occasionally ethnic issues, concerned with mining projects. The inherent risks in mining operations are well publicised, but new issues and hazards arrive on the scene and lake precedence, but the older risks still remain, while insurance cover may not he ‘full cover’ in the future. It has long been recognised that quantitative approaches to risk analysis can play a major role, but although these methods are capable of considerable theoretical precision, the lack of sound risk input data and experienced personnel limits the usefulness of theoretical analysis. It can, however, greatly assist in comparing cases, in identifying areas of risk and help in the investment decision process. Its major contribution to a mining project is that it imposes an investigative discipline that also assists in improving the quantitative approach to risk analysis and hence risk management. Risk analysis and risk management also requires sound common sense and major inputs from experienced geologists, mining, mechanical, electrical and mineral processing engineers. The Engineering Council, in 1992, issued a ten point code of professional practice entitled ‘Engineers and Risk Issues’ (The Engineering Council. 1992), covering our professional responsibilities, the law, our conduct, the need for a systematic approach to risk issues, the use of professional judgement, communications, risk management, evaluation of risk, our professional development in this field and the encouragement of public awareness of risk issues. This is a specific area of training perhaps long neglected by our industry and academic institutions (Atkinson. 1983).

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

The technique of reclaiming disturbed land by use of a hydraulic dredge pump (HDP) (which is a set of hydraulic machines for earthwork), termed 'digging deep to fill shallow has been used in the reclamation of subsidence areas in Chinese coal mines. This paper discusses the operational principle of the technique and summarises its reclamation procedures, which are being used in current reclamation practice. The soil condition reclaimed by the HDP was studied. The results showed that the pioneer crops to be planted in the reclaimed soil should be the ‘pulse’ family crops, and that improvements to the reclaimed soil and the HDP technique itself are needed. Bused on the analysis of the previous technical processes, a new rational technical model for the HDP reclamation method is presented in this paper.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. "The Archaean komatiite-associated nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda, Western Australia, exhibit a number of stratigraphic features that are indicative of a strong volcanic control on ore localization, including (1) a restriction to specific basal cumulate metakomatiite host units, (2) confinement within distinctive synvolcanic embayments in the footwall and (3) variations in the internal structure and composition of overlying and adjacent barren metakomatiite flow's and the distribution of interflow metasediments with proximity to the ore zones.The high magnesium content of the host units (up to 45% MgO volatile-free) in comparison with that of aphyric or spinifex- textured lavas (16-32% MgO) has been considered previously to indicate either magmas/lavas rich in intratelluric olivine or selective accumulation of olivine phenocrysts. The marked linear trend of the oreshoots, basal host units, footwall embayments and the volcanic stratigraphic relationships have been used as evidence for local linear feeding fissures. Rare relict igneous olivine in some host units is, however, demonstrably not intratelluric, and there is no direct or indirect evidence of a proximal eruptive site (e.g. footwall feeders, pyroclastic breccias, ultramafic intrusives) at Kambalda such as at some other deposits of this type. Kambalda is interpreted as a distal rather than proximal volcanic environment.Emplacement of the komatiite sequence at Kambalda was probably controlled by the locations of a few specific eruptive sites relative to regional topographic gradients and influenced by the topography of the pre-existing volcanic surface. Olivine enrichment in the basal host units occurred by in-situ fractionation and cumulus crystallization of olivine during longitudinal lava flow within linear lava conduits, possibly centralized on depressions between non-overlapping footwall basalt flows. The distinctive stratigraphic relationships are attributed to localization of lava conduits along the volcanic pitchline, flanked by more slowly moving parts of the flows. There are analogies with the physical volcanology of Modern basaltic and Proterozoic komatiitic lava flows.A corollary of this model is that the lava conduits thermally eroded and assimilated sulphidic sediments, contributing additional sulphur to sulphur-saturated komatiites or possibly inducing sulphide separation in originally sulphur-undersaturated komatiites. The latter would account for the restriction of ores to linear cumulate komatiite host units (thermally active lava conduits) and the locally mutually exclusive, but stratigraphically equivalent, relationship between the ores and sulphidic metasediments at Kambalda."

"The komatnte-associated Fe-Ni-Cu sulphide mineralization at Kanihalda, Western Australia, is generally believed to be magmatic in origin, but a number of postmagmatic processes significantly modified the original distribution, structure, texture, mineralogy and chemistry of the ores. Two important types of mobilized magmatic sulphides are interpillow/interbreccia sulphides and hydrothermal vein-type sulphides. Interpillow and interbreccia sulphides occur interstitial to pillowed or volcaniclastic footwall metabasalts beneath or adjacent to the stratiform contact ore horizons. They are mineralogically and compositionally similar to massive ores (and are similarly depleted in PGE relative to the compositions of bulk samples of mined ores), but normally do not contain the distinctive chalco-phile ferrochromites characteristic of contact ores. They are interpreted as magmatic sulphides that have been mobilized from the overlying or adjacent massive sulphide layer during peak tectono-nietamorphism.Hydrothermal sulphide-quartz + albite veins also occur in the footwall metabasalt and contain unannealed deformation fabrics indicative of emplacement during retrograde metamorphism. The high Ni and Pd contents of these sulphides (7-13% Ni, up to 70 ppm Pd) indicate that the metals have been derived from the spatially associated komatiites and/or contact ores, consistent with the Pd depletion previously inferred for massive ores. Very low Ir contents and high Pd/Ir ratios of the vein-type sulphides confirm an aqueous transportation-deposition mechanism; hydrothermal transfer of PGE results in strong decoupling of Pd from Ir.There appears to be a complete continuum of sulphide mobilization at Kambalda ranging from whole-scale phy sical dislocation (fault offset ores) and selective mobilization (stringer sulphides) through nietamorphie replacement (interpillow/interbrec- cia sulphides) to jiydrothermal dissolution and redeposition (vein-type sulphides)."

The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

Several empirical and semi-empirical laws of comminution, which describe the relationships between the cumulative grinding energy input and the degree of size reduction of brittle solids, have been rationally derived in the time-domain in a unified manner, starting with an integro-differential equation of grinding kinetics. The analysis leads to and provides explicit interrelationships between the energy-size reduction laws associated with Kick, Rittinger, Holmes, Bond, Charles and others, and gives useful estimates of their relative merits and validity. It is shown that Holmes' expression is, in fact, a solution to the grinding equation; consequently, this classical law is compatible with the modern theory of comminution based on population balance on particulate species

Two prominent local species, Dendrocalmus strictus (bamboo) and Saccharum spontaneum (kashi), and two exotic species, Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) and Vetiveria zizanoides (vetiver), were selected for growth trials on dumps at Mandaman, Chora, Mudidih, South Balanda and Ghugus. The climate at these sites is dry tropical and the surface soil layer a slightly acid to neutral sandy to clayey loam 10-11 cm thick, impoverished in major plant nutrients. After two years bamboo had grown the most, up to 325 cm in height, and contributed the greatest biomass, 638 g/m2 of plant. The local kashi species had a very good regenerative capacity, which was lacking in the lemon grass and vetiver. The grasses had very good soil-binding capacity and could also provide income if used as cash crops
