"The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, support systems and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play important effects on the stability of roadways and other mining activities. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures, and water softens some rocks and worsens the closure problem. In Indonesia, over 250 Mt of coal is now produced from almost surface mines. In the near future, some coal must be mined from underground. Unfortunately, the mechanical properties of coal measures rocks are not so good to open underground mines. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory tests both in Japan and Indonesia."

Accidents involving underground rail transport were analyzed to quantify the magnitude and the operational requirements for individual mine car braking systems. The results showed that the brake preventable accidents represent only 2% of the total underground fatal accidents and less than 1% of the total underground nonfatal accidents. In addition, the brake preventable accidents are expected to decline over the next decade. The costs of accidents involving deaths and Injuries were determined using various well accepted methods. The costs of a brake retrofit program for all operating underground coal cars were developed separately for small and large coal mines. Costs of retrofit brakes, new car brakes, maintenance, inspection and repair facilities were included in the esimates. The analysis showed that a retrofit program would not significantly increase safety, and that the program cost would greatly exceed the corresponding expected benefits.

Large mining companies generally follow the distributed ownership corporate model, with a board of directors responsible for decisions that affect both shareholder value and stakeholders of the company. The board is simultaneously responsible for setting the culture and values of the corporation, which drive performance and priorities. Companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) commit to sustainable development in various ways, either by virtue of implementing the King Code of Governance 2009 (King III) and/or through their own public reporting on social and environmental matters. Many mining companies make public statements regarding their support for environmental stewardship, ethical behaviour, and fair treatment of communities. It is a local, regional, and indeed, global phenomenon that companies fail to deliver on these statements. Research was carried out through the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa in 2007, and followed up in 2012, regarding directors? understanding of sustainable development issues, the relative priorities, what is needed for ?radical change? to effect sustainable development, and what enables or constrains the latter. Pertinent findings of both surveys are presented in this paper, and it is suggested that ?on-the-ground? performance may be indicative of the nature of leadership and decisions in the topmost ranks of the company. The results indicated that environmental concerns fall consistently below social issues. Financial capital ranked most important, and while environmental issues are recognized as being of strategic concern for the long-term, they ranked as being the lowest importance of all ?Five Capitals? (Financial, Manufactured, Social, Human, and Natural). Social capital ranked second lowest, with black economic empowerment being the only high-priority social issue. There is also evidence that certain companies within the mining sector fail to recognize their absolute dependence on natural resources. Much is made in academic and popular literature of the need for a new type of leadership for the radical shift to sustainable development: at company level this implies therefore a new type of director. The research found that only 14 per cent of directors felt that board decisions are consistent with their personal values; while intentions are strong to behave ethically and serve sustainable development, actions to give effect to these intentions lag significantly. Respondents indicated that the top impediments to courageous leadership for sustainable development related to personal issues of maintaining the image of being a director, fear of appearing weak, fear of being a lone voice, and bowing to board-colleague peer pressure.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

Methane gas caused an eight-month shutdown of mining operations at the Mill Creek, Phase 3, Tunnel. The gas-related shutdown occurred as the tunnel was advanced to an approximate distance of 2,700 feet, which constitutes approximately18% of the total tunnel length. The construction of an emergency ventilation shaft, a comprehensive program of de-gassing wells and an expanded gas monitoring system were used to mitigate the gas condition. When complete, this tunnel will be utilized to convey and store combined storm and sanitary sewage collected from a portion of Cleveland, Ohio and ten suburbs. This paper will provide an overview of gas related remedial measures and explain how these measures were integrated into the project to ensure safe tunneling conditions.

"The present and possible future commercial production of potash from various sources in the United Status is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a) Nebraska lakes.(b) California lakes.(c) Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a) Feldspathic material.(b) Leucite rocks of Wyoming..(c) Sericite slates of Georgia.(d) Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been developed only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not seen owing domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases and the production is very small at present.This condition will doubtless continue until a definite policy is decided upon as to the future importation of potash salts from Germany and. France. If unrestricted importation is allowed at prices even 50% greater than in 1913, only a very few, if any, of the domestic projects will be in position to compete with the foreign potash immediately, and the present industry will probably greatly decline with little or no prospect for a future resumption of the industry."

Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015. One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

Neural network methodology is used to predict mean particle size resulting from rock blast fragmentation. A blast data base developed in a previous study is used in the current study. A part of this blast data was used to train a single-hidden layer back propagation neural network model for each of the similarity groups obtained in the same previous study. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm provided the most stable and efficient training out of the four algorithms evaluated. An extensive analysis was performed using a part of the blast data to estimate the optimum number of units for the hidden layer for each similarity group. The remaining blast data are used to validate the trained neural network models. Capability of the developed neural network models is determined by comparing predictions with measured values and predictions based on one of the most applied fragmentation prediction models appearing in the blasting literature. Prediction capability of the neural network models was found to be strong and better than the existing most applied model. Diversity of the blasts data used is one of the most important aspects of the developed models. The developed neural network models are suitable for practical use at mines.

Rocks show a variety of engineering and physical properties that affect typical quarry operation such as diamond wire cutting in the marble quarry. The physical and mechanical properties of rocks depend on their mineralogical and petrographical characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mineralogical and petrographical properties of a rock, such as grain size and mineral content, and how these affect the wearing of diamond bead and cutting rate in a diamond wire cutting operation in a marble quarry. Statistical analysis is used to carry out the study. Three different rock types were examined, namely, hard rock (andesite) and softer rocks like limestone and marble. The study revealed that the mineralogical and petrographical properties of the rocks, such as percentage of quartz, biotite, plagioclase, matrix minerals, and opaque minerals, are important. In addition, the grain size of quartz and plagioclase in andesitic rocks and calcite grain size for carbonate rocks significantly influenced the wear rate and cutting rate in diamond wire cutting operations.

"Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

This report is volume 10 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff's Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

NIOSHAn accelerated testing procedure developed by the Bureau of Mines for evaluating commercially available corrosion inhibitors is described. Ultra-sonic agitation of the corrodent solutions and the hot-finished mild steel test coupons was used to evaluate the effects of several variables on the effectiveness of two corrosion inhibitors. Small changes in the weight of the test coupons in both controlled and inhibited corrodents, before and after exposure, affected the precision and accuracy of the results. Minute amounts of oxygen in the systems were found to be causing the relatively large deviations in the corrosion developed in the controlled tests. Microscopic examination of the test coupons revealed that both surface preparation and internal strains resulting from fabrication methods materially affect corrosion behavior.

The North Arm of Sulawesi hosts numerous gold and base metal occurrences. Compilation and analysis of geological, tectonic, geochemical and isotopic age date data collected over the past six years on the central part of this region have resulted in the definition of 184 prospects and mineral occurrences of various styles occurring in diverse geological settings representing varying tectonic environments and erosional levels. Mineralisation of the following styles have been recognised: porphyry Cu-Au; porphyry-related gold and base metal veins; high-sulphidation Cu-Au-As; low-sulphidation epithermal Au; hydrothermal breccias; and sediment-hosted Au mineralisation. Clusters of occurrences/prospects form mineralised districts representative of magmatic systems with characteristics determined by the tectonic environment prevailing during formation and the subsequent level of exposure by erosion. Distinctly different Miocene and Pliocene porphyry systems are now recognised whilst most of the remaining epithermal mineralisation is thought to be Pliocene or later. The central North Arm of Sulawesi is composed of a Miocene magmatic island arc that is built on an Early Tertiary basement of predominantly oceanic basaltic rocks and overprinted by a Pliocene magmatic arc. A structural fabric dominated by SSE arc-normal and ESE arc-parallel faults was established during the Miocene under a dextral wrench regime and intersections of these major fault sets are favoured sites for Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Strong dextral tension caused by the collision of the Sula Platform, at the close of the Miocene, led to arc-parallel rifting. Sinistral reactivation of the major Miocene structures in the Pliocene led to further rifting, and ENE-dilation. Pliocene intrusions and related mineralisation exploit these dilatant settings. Miocene porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation occurs where late-Miocene quartz diorite stocks have intruded the margins of earlier Miocene plutons of intermediate composition. Porphyry centres have associated peripheral base metal veins, and skarns. Overprinting of porphyry vein sets by epithermal veins is common. Sediment-hosted gold mineralisation occurs in calcareous sediments associated with the Miocene arc. Remnants of the Pliocene volcanic arc, comprised of dacite volcanics, intrusions and voluminous pyroclastics, dominate the south coast and host porphyry Cu-Au, high sulphidation Cu-Au-As deposits, low-sulphidation epithermal Au veins and disseminated gold mineralisation. In some prospects, mineralised sinters are preserved adjacent to vein systems and deeper mineralised stockworks. Diatremes are common and large caldera structures have been identified. Pliocene stocks and porphyry dyke swarms penetrate the main central and northern parts of the Miocene- arc introducing additional porphyry Cu-Au, base metal hydrothermal breccias and low-sulphidation gold veins. Rapid uplift and erosion has resulted in a highly variable preservation of styles of mineralisation adding further diversity within the mineralised districts and telescoping within deposits.

"This paper describes the challenges of mining a sill pillar under various types of paste backfill quality. From 1994 to 2002, Louvicourt mine produced approximately 12,600,000 t grading 3.5% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 27 g/mt Ag, and 0.85 g/mt Au. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The production of this 4,300 t/d operation was accomplished using two mining horizons; from the 655 m level to the 415 m level and from the 860 m level to the 680 m level. The main sill pillar is between the 680 m level and the 655 m level. The second sill pillar is between the 885 m level and the 860 m level representing a quarter of the main sill pillar in size. Since 2002, production has gradually decreased and mining activities are expected to end in mid-2005. The sill pillar production will represent almost 25% of the total mine production. The overall recovery of the sill pillars stopes will be discussed in this paper. To recover the sill pillars, more than 1,500 m of development was planned in or under paste backfill. The first sill pillar stopes under paste backfill were mined out in 2002 with excellent results."

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

Soil and vegetation development were studied on abandoned mine sites near Velva in Ward County, North Dakota. The sites studied were 1, 7, 17, 30 and 45 years old since abandonment; unmined sites were also studied to provide measures of comparison. Species diversity was the highest at unmined sites (114) and lowest at the I year old site (26); sites 7, 17,30 and 45 years old had 37, 52, 43 and 68 species, respectively. Stand ordination revealed that site ages were the most important in influencing species diversity and composition. Stand-environ-mental complex ordinations encompassing 53 variables showed topographic variables to be the most important followed by site ages. Rates of nutrient accumulations were as follows: organic carbon 13.1 g m-2 yr-1; nitrogen 2.5 g m-2 yr-1; phosphorus 0.01 g m-2 yr-1; potassium 0.49 g m-2 yr-1. Carbon-nitrogen ratios showed the widest range for 1 year old sites (5-40) but 70 percent of the 45 year old sites showed values below 15 which were com-parable to the unmined mixed grass prairie sites. Species distributional diagrams are provided to show their habitat preferences which may be helpful in formulating species prescriptions for revegetation.

THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Wheaton Station and tunnel design was completed and offered for bid in the Spring of 1983. The format was unique to the Authority: a four part, four fiscal year contract developed in response to funding limitations with construction divided into four stages allowing the maximum amount of work to be done each year for the funds available. The bid was based on the entire contract, but was orginally awarded for only the first year's work. Each year's work had a maximum funding limitation thus safe guarding the Authority from a grossly unbalanced bid. The Authority's estimate for this work was $83,871,524. The low bid came in at 61% of this for a total low bid of $51,512,058. The low bidder was ILBAU America Corporation whose home offices are in Austria. Following receipt of the bids (and resolution of objections cited by other bidders who felt that the job could not be done for the $51 Million dollar figure), a Notice-To-Proceed was given on October 5, 1983. The construction contract allows a Value Engineering Change Proposal, called a VECP which is initiated and developed by the contractor to change the drawings, specifications or other requirements of the contract.
