"RESUMELe gisement d 'uranium de Cigar Lake, dans la région de l'Athabasca au nord du Saskatchewan, fut découvert en mai 1981 par Cogema Canada Ltée, opérant pour Ie compte de la ""Waterbury Lake Joint Venture"".Le corps minéralisé. qui est dépourvu de toute expression directe en surface, est situé a la discordance entre les met sédiments du wottaston Group (Protérozoïque inférieur ou Aphébien) et les grès de l 'Athabasca (Protérozoïque moyen ou Hélikien), à une profondeur de 410 a450 m.Fin 1984, Ie gisement était reconnu par 105 sondages minéralisés repartis sur une longueur de 1800 m, pour une largeur comprise entre 25 et 105 m. 11 se présente sous forme d’une lentille aplatie de 5 a30 m de puissance, et montre une remarquable continuité d'ensemble. Une ride ou bombement topographique de la discordance est associée au gisement surtoute sa longueur.A l'échelle régionale, le corps minéralisé à est associe à un corridor structural d’orientation est-ouest, a l'intérieur duquel des facies particuliers aténdance blast mylonitique sont développes dans les formations métapolitiques agraphite du socle métamorphique. Il est entouré par un halo d'altération très important, caractériser Ie développement de minéraux argileux alumino-magnesiens (illite-chlorite).La minéralisation est située, pour la plus grande part, dans les grès d'Athabasca, et se compose essentiellement d'uraninite et de sulfo-arseniures de nickel et de cobalt,De nombreux levés géochimiques et géophysiques ont été effectues dans la région de Cigar Lake. The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sands tone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surf ace.AI the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25 m and 105 m. It has the shape of a flat-lying lens 5 m to 30 m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and latera continuity from the information obtained to date. A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. This symposium, the third in a series, had as a general objective the dissemination of information concerning advances in technology and utilization of solid fuels, with emphasis on lignitic coals. Approximately 150 representatives of industry, government, and educational institutions from 21 states and 3 Canadian provinces were present at the symposium. Those attending were welcomed by Marling J. Ankeny, Director of the Bureau of Mines, representing the Bureau, and Dean T. H. Clifford, Vice President of the University, representing the University.

ABSTRACT: One alternative to close a radioactive waste repository in rock salt is the construction of a “Cross Section Closure (CSC)“ sealing barrier. The proposed material for the CSC is highly compacted bentonite. To investigate the swelling behaviour of a highly compacted bentonite a large number of laboratory tests were performed. In addition, large scale model test were carried out to demonstrate the development of a nearly homogeneous and isotropic swelling pressure. The results of the large scale model tests were interpreted numerically based on the models for stress-strain behaviour and water uptake which are implemented in the finite element codes FEST03 and HYDOPO. The investigations show a good agreement of the results of the model tests and the corresponding analyses and show, that the theoretical models are capable of describing the behaviour of sealing structures based on highly compacted bentonite. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Eine Möglichkeit für den Verschluß eines Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle im Steinsalz ist die Konstruktion einer Querschnittsabdichtung aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit. Zur Untersuchung des Quellverhaltens von hochverdichtetem Bentonit wurden eine große Anzahl von Laborversuchen durchgeführt. Um die Entwicklung eines nahezu homogenen und isotropen Quelldrucks nachzuweisen, wurden darüber hinaus auch Modellversuche in größerem Maßstab durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Modellversuche wurden im Hinblick auf die Wasseraufnahme und das Spannungs-Verformungsverhalten mit Hilfe numerischer Berechnungen mit den finite Element Programmen FEST 03 und HYDOPO interpretiert. Die Untersuchungen zeigen gute Übereinstimmungen zwischen Versuchs- und Berechnungsergebnissen. Die numerischen Modelle sind somit geeignet, das Verhalten von Abdichtungsbauwerken aus hochverdichtetem Bentonit zutreffend zu beschreiben. RÉSUMÉ: Une possibilité pour fermer un dépôt final de déchets radioactifs dans sel gemme est la construction d'un étanchement de coupe transversale, fabriqué de bentonite fortement compacté. Pour étudier le comportement de gonflement de bentonite fortement compacté, de nombreux essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés. En outre, des essais sur modèle sur une plus grande échelle ont aussi été exécutes afin de prouver le développement d'une pression de gonflement à peu près homogène et isotrope. Les résultats de ces essais sur modèle étaient interprétés en vue de l'absorption d'eau et du comportement contraintes-déformations par le moyen de calculs numériques avec les programmes d'éléments finis FEST03 et HYDOPO. Les études montrent de bonnes conformités entre des résultats d'essai et de calcul. Les modèles numériques sont ainsi capables de décrire justement le comportement d'ouvrages d'étanchement fabriqués de bentonite fortement compacté.

"This paper presents the geologic and ground control challenges that were encountered by CONSOL Energy’s mining operations in southwestern Pennsylvania. A sandstone-to-limestone geology transition was encountered by Mine A, where the primary 8-foot bolts were anchored in claystone. Upon experiencing roof sags and a roof fall in the return entry, 6-foot high-tension, fully-grouted primary bolts were employed along with 16-foot center cable bolts at every other strap to improve beam building and to ensure proper anchorage into the competent limestone. No longwall delay was reported within this geologic transition zone, although there was some difficulty in maintaining an open #2 entry airway behind the longwall face.The geologic encounter in Mine B was more complex, where fluvial deposits of massive sandstone channels, shale channels and pyritic-rich, green claystones were encountered on both sides of the mains, and which impacted both development and longwall ground control. In particular, poor transitional roof areas near the edges of the sandstone and shale channels often posed significant ground control challenges. In addition, hydraulic fracturing was sometimes utilized to enhance caving of massive sandstone behind the shields to relieve pressure at the face. Longwall face conditions and advance rates were documented to illustrate the effects of sandstone channels, shale channels, and green claystones on safety and productivity and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing.Shale channels, slickensided zones, laminated roof zones, soft floor, and a regional syncline were encountered in Mine C, the combination of which posed unique ground control challenges during both development and longwall mining. The presence of soft floor, coupled with the presence of thick floor coal and deep cover, resulted in headgate convergence during retreat of the first right-hand longwall panel. Two-piece 8-foot bolts were sometimes observed to fail at the coupler within the laminated roof zone, and 6-foot, 1-piece, fully-grouted point-anchor bolts were employed as the primary bolts thereafter."

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and·silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied. E. M. Hamilton, in 1909, was perhaps the first to define clearly the problem as it affects the cyanidation of silver ores and to suggest possible methods of preliminary treatment. Most of the work done in the interval between the appearance of Hamilton's paper and the assumption of the investigation by the authors was in the nature of routine tests covering suggestions already made rather than of research directed to a fundamental study of the problem. No practical application has so far been made of any of these proposed processes. The investigation described in this bulletin has proved that there s a refractory compound of manganese and silver-probably a manganite- insoluble in cyanide solution and other common solvents for silver. Although this compound has not been isolated from natural ores, it has been made synthetically, and shows all the characteristics of the natural product. "SUMMARYThe coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information.Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought forth some semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and Mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain prgmatitites and pegmatitec zones into several groups of associated minerals; based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or grouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, makes possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by a single integrated process.As the coarse-grained granitic pegmatites are composed primarily of,feldspar, quartz, and muscovite, the methods developed for separating and recovering them, as well as those methods developed for separating and recovering such minor minerals as spodumene and lepidolite, are important contributions to the over-all problem of pegmatite treatment. Some of these methods have been demonstrated in the laboratory only, whereas others have progressed beyond the laboratory stage arid are being employed in commercial operations.Recent laboratory investigations at Rapid City, employing both these early developments and the mineral groupings, have demonstrated that a single integrated process can recover muscovite, feldspar; and. quartz from the rejects of hand-sorting a typical muscovite-feldspar-quartz material. Employing a newly developed procedure for the flotation of beryl, the investigations have also demonstrated the possibility of recovering the beryl, in addition to muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, by an integrated process from a typical berylliferous pegmatitic material in which all of these minerals are present."

For the Purpose of standardizing important testing methods, an attempt has been made to develop a rationalized scheme for ore testing, starting with preliminary investigations to determine the physical and chemical properties of the ore, following this with a logical selection and trial of processing tests to find out how the ore may be most effectively treated, and concluding with a discussion of what interpretation may be placed on the results in terms of plant design and operation. A selection of Procedures that appear well-suited to the ore-dressing problems under investigation is included in the following paper of this report so that other experimenters may be enabled to verify our findings and to offer criticisms and suggestions for improving our practice. A tentative scheme for the evaluation of flotation reagents is being investigated, and some progress has been made in a study to determine the significance of small-scale testing. These projects have required 899 analyses. Papers on these and others on ore testing, such as testing for amalgamation and for cyanidation, will be included in future annual reports.

Researchers from the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members, the captain, and both gasmen. Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

"The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."

WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate' the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers' who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. The primary objectives of this project are (1) the determination of manpower demand in primary lead and zinc production for the years 1985 and 2000, and (2) the estimation of the availability of the required manpower for these years. In order to meet the first of these objectives relationships between employee requirements and metal production in the various states were established, The total primary lead and zinc production from United states mines in 1985 and 2000 has been predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These forecasts and the 1974 figures are as follows: [1974 1985 2000 Lead metal, tons 669,000 700,000 900,000 Zinc metal, tons 494,000 585,000 995,000] Mining By analysis of ore reserve data and industry characteristics, the authors estimated the portion of the primary production which each state would yield in the future years. As manpower requirements are determined by the tons of ore produced and by worker productivity, these figures were determined for each mining state and district by developing relationships between lead and zinc metal production, ore production, ore to recoverable metal ratios, employee productivity, and number of employees required. The number of new employees required annually to compensate for attrition and production growth is provided, also.

"The purpose of grinding circuits is to produce a particle size distribution that has as much as possible the wanted particle size class. In practise, however, the production of the wanted size class is not at all as simple as it sounds. In the case of industrial minerals for example the end user may give very tight specifications for the particle size distribution and for the chemical composition of the product. This leads in many cases to a very demanding grinding process, if we want to reach and maintain these specifications. In other words, the required size distribution is not necessary the best possible for the chemical composition.Screen models aim to predict the size distribution and flow of the products when a feed size distribution, feed tonnage, and grade efficiency curve are known. The approach used in this study was to select the most suitable empirical model for classification. Suitability of the existing models has been evaluated and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model.The performance of a screen was evaluated in order to minimize the amount of fine material in the screen overflow. The experiments were carried out using Derrick single-deck screen, first alone with recycling and then in the closed circuit with a rod mill using two different scales. The separate screen tests showed the expected behaviour of the grade efficiency curves. In the pilot tests the Leonard screen efficiencies stayed almost constant. This suggests that the screen works better in a milling circuit. However the loading of the screen turned the product of the mill coarser that helped screening. The grade efficiencies obtained from the pilot tests had the same general shape. The regression analysis of the pilot test runs did not give an acceptable correlation for the parameters. This suggests that pilot tests cannot be directly used to scale or to optimise industrial milling circuits. However they can be used to predict the trends of behaviour of an industrial circuit."

The applicability of the beam theory in analysis of roof- pillar-weak floor interaction in partial extraction room-and-pillar mining is presented. The mine structure is modeled as an equivalent multi-indeterminate overburden elastic beam supported by elasto-plastic pillars; resting on a viscoelastic layer of immediate weak floor strata underlain by a competent rock mass. The developed analytical model was initially utilized to conduct sensitivity analyses of different variables affecting the mining system, such as the deformability of coal and weak floor strata, thickness of weak floor strata, number of pillars in a panel, width of pillars, width of panel etc. These analyses were then extended to three overburden strata - coal pillar - floor strata lithologies typical of active coal mining areas in Illinois.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.
