Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

This paper presents a study conducted to assess sillmat behaviour during undercut mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of arching and sillmat thickness on stability. The design study investigated the effects of such parameters as stope width and height, closure strains, orebody geometry and inclination, wall roughness, fill properties and cure time on the stability of cemented sillmat during undercut mining. Arching effects have been quantified based on centrifuge modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Observations have indicated that the degree of arching is a function of stope geometry, wall roughness, fill cohesion, and wall closure. Arching effects increased with decreasing stope width, increasing backfill cohesion and frictional resistance, increasing wall roughness and with wall closure.

Mining companies are continually looking for product-ivity and efficiency improvements with their equipment to reduce operating costs. This paper will review the results of a productivity analysis conducted at the Luscar Ltd. Boundary Dam and Bienfait mines near Estevan, Saskatchewan using a Computer-Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) installed on a track-type dozer. The CAES TTT system is a Global Positioning System that provides the operator with constant survey guidance. The study includes a productivity comparison between two similar test sites, one with the aid of the CAES system and the other, without. The CAES TTT system shows a productivity improvement of between 20 and 35% in the reclamation slope leveling application. Even with the CAES TTT system deactivated, some of the advanced features of the system were used to: retain terrain data for volume calculations; track the equipment position; and, accurately record and separate idle time from working time.

A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

"Locked cycle testing has become more common practice in the last 10 years. Reasons vary from a desire to avoid pilot plant testing, demand for more variability testing within deposits, and perhaps most importantly, a request from the financial institutions who invariably finance many of the projects. Surprisingly, many people don’t understand locked cycle testing, analysis and balancing. This paper provides a brief overview of locked cycle testing, and then progresses into a more detailed discussion on the analysis and balancing of locked cycle test data. The paper endeavors to educate CMP personnel on how to determine if the test was good and if a reasonable metallurgical projection was made. The paper uses case studies to illustrate the key points.INTRODUCTIONA locked cycle test is a repetitive batch used to simulate a continuous circuit. The basic procedure has a complete batch test performed in the first cycle which is then followed by similar batch tests which have “intermediate” material from the previous cycle added to the appropriate location in the current cycle. These batch tests, or cycles, are continued in this iterative manner for an arbitrary number of cycles. The final products from each cycle, i.e. final concentrate and final tailings, are filtered and thus removed from further processing. At the end of the test, all the products, final and intermediate, are dried, weighed and subjected to chemical analysis. The test is balanced and a metallurgical projection is made.This description can be found in many of our classical textbooks for the mineral engineer 1, 2, 3,4. Unfortunately, none of these textbooks provide any discussion beyond the basic procedure. Often, they provide comments such as in Taggart’ where he states; “It is questionable whether in any case it approximates mill results any more closely than the standard batch test”. It is truly surprising that our classic textbooks promote that locked cycle tests are more art than science, and suggest that they can be of dubious value. None of the textbooks provide meaningful insight or discussion in how to assess:"

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

At the 25th Annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium in September 2001, Huckleberry Mines Limited received the Jake MacDonald Reclamation Award for its exemplary mine waste management plan, conceived to prevent the onset of acid rock drainage (ARD) and facilitate reclamation of the site. The mine is an excellent example of a total mine waste management plan, with all materials scheduled in detail for the life of the mine. The filling plan for the waste management facility takes into consideration the requirement for permanently flooding the potentially acid-generating rock. From an acid generation point of view, the tailings fall in the zone of potentially acid-generating material. To avoid long-term ARD concerns, it is planned to float pyrite out of the tailings toward the end of the mine life, thereby generating a non-potentially acid-generating tailings stream which will be used to cap the deposited mine waste. The pyrite-rich tailings will be discharged into the deeper portion of the impoundment. On closure, a permanent water cover will be maintained over the mine waste. Only beaches of non-potentially acid-generating tailings will remain exposed. Mining will be phased to also allow one of the pits to provide storage for potentially acid-generating rock and to be flooded at the end of mine life.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

Bubble attachment time measurements for the rare-earth phosphate minerals monazite and xenotime were made as a function of oleate concentration, sodium fluoride addition, and temperature. Results indicate that the rare-earth phosphates behave similarly to other phosphate minerals, notably collophanlte and fluorapatite, which have been studied previously. The addition of sodium fluoride yielded a modest decrease in bubble attachment time with fluoride additions below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, while at fluoride additions greater than the apparent precipitation point a significant decrease in attachment time occurs. Increasing the temperature or the system gave a slight decrease in bubble attachment time in the absence or sodium fluoride. With sodium fluoride addition and below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, an increase in temperature actually increased the attachment time. For sodium fluoride additions above the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, a temperature increase significantly decreased the attachment time.

This case study provides an example of how social marketing was applied to meet the needs of business customers. Federal regulations require that all companies develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. The HazCom Writer, created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is a software tool designed to help companies prepare their required Hazard Communications (HazCom) written plan and list all hazardous chemicals at the company's worksite. The social marketing goal was to provide a product for small- to medium-sized companies to use for federal HazCom rule compliance. The HazCom Wm'ter is a direct NIOSH response to customer and stakeholder needs (including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the mining community, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration- regulated companies).

"The use of paste technology for surface tailings disposal may offer economic, technical, safety, and environmental advantages for both underground and surface mining operations. Paste is a non-Newtonian fluid having some shear strength during transport and placement. The strength is augmented after placement by consolidation, water loss, and by addition of chemicals. Economical dewatering systems are necessary to the success of surface paste tailings disposal. In an underground mine, the paste backfill plant can produce paste for surface disposal about 50% of the time because only about 1/2 of the tailings are needed for backfill. The distribution of paste to the surface stack involves expensive pumping equipment and thus a nearby location of the stack is desirable. The viscosity of paste can often be manipulated by modifying pH. Placement of the paste in a designed stack configuration depends on topographic and climatic factors as well as paste properties.INTRODUCTIONThe use of paste technology for mine backfill is becoming accepted for underground mines mainly because of ground control and economic reasons. Paste technology is just starting to be applied for tailings disposal with only a few hardrock metal mines worldwide using the technology; however, it has been used extensively for red mud disposal in the aluminum industry. The disposal of dry tailings is very attractive from environmental and safety points of view because of limited water which might potentially escape and pollute river systems. Dry stacking systems, however, are expensive because of filtration and truck transportation costs. Paste can be produced from most tailings streams by special types of thickeners. Furthermore, it can be transported in pipelines, therefore paste technology may be more economic than dry stacking but still have some of the major advantages. Understanding of paste technology has improved through experience with operating underground backfill systems in recent years and because of testwork and research programs by mining companies, consultants and equipment vendors. Thus we may be on the verge of taking a new look at tailings management using paste technology."

A rapid, accurate method for predicting the dew points of gas condensate systems and their subsequent normal and retrograde phase behavior with pressure decline has been developed. The method predicts dewpoint pressure, volume percent liquid, condensate content of produced gas, and the liquid and gas compositions at pressures below the dewpoint pressure. Use of a modified form of the BWR equation of state, which was established by regression calculations on experimental data from several gas condensates, provides depletion behavior predictions that are significantly improved over predictions using K-values based on convergence pressures and Standing's correlation for density. INTRODUCTION Prediction of complex hydrocarbon-mixture thermodynamics is fundamental to reservoir and gas process engineering. In particular, accurate descriptions of phase behavior are needed to plan production operations for gas-condensate reservoirs. Although analysis of reservoir behavior during producing and cycling operations can be made for simple reservoir models, extensions of these studies to more complex reservoir systems are still difficult, both with regard to numerical techniques and the phase behavior of the fluids. This report presents a mathematical method for handling the complex phase relationships encountered in retrograde condensates; it represents an advance in reservoir behavior technology in that it will aid the development of closed-form mathematical representations of total production systems. A typical phase diagram for a complex hydrocarbon mixture is shown in Fig. 1. When the reservoir temperature T, is higher than the critical temperature Tc, and lower than the critical-condensation temperature Tct' the mixture is a gas condensate. Decreasing the pressure on a condensate while maintaining nearly constant temperature will result in two phases forming at the dew point. Further decrease in pressure will cause additional liquids to be formed. This phenomenon is called retrograde condensation. As pressure continues to decrease, normal phase behavior regions are encountered (liquid vaporizes as the pressure decreases) until the low-pressure dew point is encountered. When a gas-condensate reservoir is produced, gas is withdrawn and the volume of fluids in the reservoir remains nearly constant as the pressure declines. Heavier components tend to accumulate in the liquid phase as a result of retrograde condensation, while lighter components tend to concentrate in the vapor phase. The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

The opencut coal mine is located about 50 km west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia and produces about 140 000 tonnes per annum of high grade steaming coal utilising a small team (ten) of personnel to mine remnants of the Aberdare and Bluff seams left by previous underground mining. This, in itself, is not remarkable except that one of the seams has commenced spontaneously cornbusting resulting in temperatures in excess of 55’C commonly being encountered with portions of the p’it being wreathed in steam. To extend mine life, the mine required a blasting system that would: . Safely blast in temperatures below 100°C . Significantly reduce overall unit costs . Not increase the current vibration impacts on nearby housing . Not increase flyrock.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38 kilometres north east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa - Cloncurry mineral district of north west Queensland, Australia. The EHM ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite.At the end of 2009, after a series of promising laboratory test work, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. Laboratory test work also indicated that with the use of high chrome media, the pH was able to be reduced with no negative impact on plant performance. At high pH values (above 10.5), the forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response.This paper provides an overview of the effects of reducing the pH in the EHM copper rougher flotation circuit. The pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 to determine the impact on the rougher performance and the subsequent performance of the whole copper flotation circuit. It was found that there was a slightly increased improvement in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold.With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t.
