This paper presents the results of a test program evaluating the impact of sample mass on the precision of Stage 1 gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test results. Four ore types ranging from low to high GRG contents were the focus of testing. A method to predict the influence of sample mass on the confidence limits of the Stage 1 GRG test result is demonstrated. The results suggest that although small samples tend to overestimate Stage 1 GRG in samples with low gravity gold values due to higher mass pull to concentrate, such samples can give acceptable estimates of the Stage 1 GRG content with focussed sample treatment protocols.CITATION:Giblett, A and Napier-Munn, T J, 2015. Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

East Otago gold deposits are hosted in Otago Schist that is the metamorphosed equivalent of Permian-Triassic Torlesse terrane greywackes. Relatively undeformed Torlesse sequences in Canterbury have <l m - 50 m bedding, with c. 500 m - l km and c. three kilometre scale units, typically either: 1) thick-bedded, massive, sandstones; 2) thin-bedded sandstone-argillite flysch; or 3) siltstone- or argillite-dominated units. Such lithological layering in Otago was intensely folded, deformed, and overprinted by metamorphic fabrics during Jurassic-Cretaceous regional metamorphism. Although primary sedimentary structures can no longer be recognised, a æghostÆ lithological variation is still present in Otago represented by psammitic (sand-derived), interlayered (sandstone-siltstone derived) and pelitic (siltstone-mudstone derived) schist. Lithological æunitsÆ in the schist are typically either 20 100 m or c.1 - 2 km thick, and are oblique to faults and shears hosting gold mineralisation at Macraes, Barewood, Nenthom, and Oturehua. Lithological variations and folds in lithological units are important in the along-strike distribution of gold in these deposits, and in the development of relatively high-grade pods and shoots at l00 m - 1.5 km scales. Ramps, flats and step-overs (known to be locally important for controlling mineralisation) are commonly located at lithological boundaries, presumably by local refraction of faults or shear zones as they propagated through folded stratigraphy. The various lithologies have also responded differently to deformation, causing variations in permeability that affected the penetration of mineralising fluids. Mapping lithological variations in barren host-rocks, either directly+ by fieldwork or indirectly by aerial geophysics, is a key to understanding and predicting the distribution of gold at mine and deposit scales.

Wind erosion can be a major cause of the loss and dispersion of tailings material from a tailings dam into its surrounding environment. Such dust dispersion can be a serious nuisance, as well as a health hazard to inhabitants in nearby settlements, and can also damage the health of animals, degrade crops, making them less marketable, and cause soil and water pollution. The problem of wind erosion can affect tailings dams in all types of climate, but becomes worse as climatic aridity increases. Because clouds of dust are often observed billowing across the top surfaces of tailings dams in dry windy weather, there is a common misconception that the dust arises from wind erosion of the top surface. As a result, much effort and money is vainly spent on treating the tops of tailings dams to prevent dust generation, whereas the slopes of the dams are the true major dust source. This paper briefly reviews what is known of erosion of tailings dams and then proceeds to describe the mechanics of wind erosion in general, and how it affects tailings dams in particular. Finally, recommendations are made for mitigating wind erosion of tailings dams and the resulting blowing dust.

Seven pairs of drop and ventilation shafts, between two and nine feet in diameter, will convey combined sewer flow to a 230-foot-deep, 26-foot diameter storage tunnel. This paper will present case histories for each site. Discussion will include functional requirements, program and site access constraints, structural design, geology, the variety of excavation and lining construction methods used, and lessons learned. Noteworthy observations include the importance of assuring competent ground sup-port at the soil-bedrock interface and of achieving tight verticality tolerance using both top-down and raise bore excavation methods.

The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.

A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. [Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Various applications of bulk ore sorting are discussed in this paper, and three cases are investigated considering the impact on the overall operation and the associated benefits.CITATION:Duffy, K, Valery, W, Jankovic, A and Holtham, P, 2015. Indosinian (T) orogeny amalgamated the Mongolia-Xingan fold zone, the North China continent, the Yangtzi platform and the SE China fold zone into a unified continent. The early to middle Yanshanian (J-K1) orogeny created a Cordilleran type active continental margin in East Asia, reactivated the consolidated East China continent, and generated a large amount of granitoids, calc-alkaline volcanics and W, Sn, Mo, Cu, Au, and U ore deposits. The late Yanshanian (K2) orogeny began a transition to the western Pacific type continental margin. A tensional environment led to the development of peralkaline magmatism and tne formation of continental basins with red beds. The Himalayan (Tr-Q) orogeny was characterised by a backarc spreading and rifting regime. The dominant magmatism was continental basaltic.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in development of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Final Report Volume III - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 94-L Bridge Conveyor describes the various noise control modifications to the bridge conveyor, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information.

Results of research on the hydrothermal precipitation of zirconium oxide from the Bureau of Mines' zirconyl chloride-sulfate strip liquors indicate that nuclear grade material can be prepared by this process. Greater than 99% of the zirconium value can be precipitated at 250-260°C in short (5-10 minutes) reaction time without consumption of acid value of the liquor. Thus, precipitation of zirconium dioxide on a continuous basis, i.e., the zirconium dioxide is precipitated in a continuous mode of operation by pumping the strip liquor through a heated pressurized reactor and recycle of the acidic (spent) liquor to the process stage are favored. The results of accompanying studies of liquod/solid separation, product washing and dewatering, product purity, and chlorination of the product are presented and discussed.

Mine seals are used in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active mine workings. The objective of adding inert gas to a sealed mine area is to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration in the sealed area to a level that will not support combustion. In the US, this process is typically conducted from the ground surface and because surface-to-mine access is constrained by so many variables, it is very difficult to provide a source of inert gas to the place where it is needed underground. To alleviate this problem On Site Gas Systems, under a NIOSH contract, built a nitrogen (N2) generation plant that operates in the underground environment. The purpose of this work was to create a reliable in-mine mobile plant that would extract N2 gas from the mine atmosphere and use the gas to create and maintain a safe sealed mine area. The plant is based on a novel design using pressure swing adsorption technology and is sized to fit on a standard shield car or mine dolly for easy transport in and around an underground coal mine. The plant is capable of producing about 900 scf/min of N2 gas at ambient mine conditions. After an exhaustive series of laboratory tests, the plant was field tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a portion of the mine was sealed and rendered inert. During the test, the movement of the injected gas was monitored at several underground points to observe the progress and extent of the inerting process. This paper describes the plant design and the results of the field test at the SRCM. Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.

Editor’s note: Mining companies doing business in Central Asia, and parts of the developing world, should look for ways to promote community development through the introduction of appropriate technology. This article should be of interest to SME members. It shows sustainable development type projects need not be massive or expensive. Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. Joint Development Associates International (JDA) began humanitarian relief and community development in Central Asia in 1992, following the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Appropriate technology has played an important role in the company’s efforts to assist those segments of society that are most vulnerable to poverty and disease.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County North Shore Connector (NSC) Project involves TBM excavation of twin 690 m (2,240 lf) precast segment lined light rail tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow, downtown city street. The $435 M project is funded 80% ($348 M) by the Federal Government, 17% ($72.5 M) by the State of Pennsylvania and 3% ($14.5 M) by Allegheny County. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and one building constructed directly over the alignment. The project includes construction of twin 369 m (1200 lf) cut and cover concrete box tunnels and an underground station shell. This paper provides an overview of general site conditions, current project status and construction challenges for the Twin Tunnels and North Shore Light Rail Station.

TiC14, AIC13, and VC14 were coreduced simultaneously via a Kroll-type magnesium reduction to form an alloy sponge as part of a research effort by the Bureau of Mines to produce titanium alloy powder. Reduction tem-peratures of 750°, 850°, and 950° C, a range of chloride feed rates from 34 to 152 Ib/(ft2·h), and crucible diameters of 7-3/4 and 10-1/4 in were tested. Microprobe analyses using a 40-um-diam spot showed no effect on alloy microhomogeneity (distribution of Al and V in the Ti, considered critical as a powder property), due to changes in process variables within these ranges. Statistical analysis of these data for alloy sponge indicated greater variation in the chemical composition (AI and V) than that found in commercial Ti-6Al-4V plate or Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) powder. Therefore, a one-step approach to pow-der, such as grinding the Ti alloy sponge, would not produce a powder product of acceptable chemical homogeneity. An approach that homoge-nized the sponge, such as with a melting step, would produce an accept-able powder product with respect to chemical homogeneity.
