R. W. Christy (Manager of Sales, Sanitary Engineering Equipment, Link-Belt Co.) and C.D. Rubert (Barrett, Haentjens & Co.) — Messrs. King and Schepman have presented an excellent paper which outlines the general practice in the design of thickener mechanisms. Lifting devices, controls, special applications and underflow pumping arrangements have been reviewed in detail. Pumping arrangements were illustrated which eliminate the need for an expensive tunnel beneath the thickener floor. Most of those illustrated have the common feature of a relatively long underflow suction line extending from the hopper floor to the pump located on the bridge at the periphery of the tank. The authors limit these arrangements to comparatively dilute or thin slurrys. It is implied that dense and coarse concentrates, which are difficult to pump, cannot be handled unless a tunnel is constructed. Fig. 1 shows an underflow pump arrangement which negates the need for a tunnel but which permits the operator to convey a heavy dense slurry. The pump is mounted directly on the fixed hoist platform and the impeller is located at the base of the steel center column. Priming water is not needed. The column

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

The report describes the development of preliminary requirement specifications for standardized operating controls for roof bolting machines used in underground coal mining. According to recent statistics, roof bolting continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in underground coal mining. The two principal hazards to the roof bolter operator are the machine itself and roof falls during the bolting cycle. The lack of standardization of machine controls is a major contributor to this hazardous situation. Observations of roof bolting operations and discussions with roof bolter manufacturers coupled with detailed analyses of roof bolter control design specifications were performed during this study. Detailed roof bolter operator task analyses, commonality of control analyses, and classical link analyses were also performed. The results of these analyses were then used to produce preliminary requirement specifications for standardized controls.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

The authors were responsible for a series of large scale multiple chamber charge blasts conducted in the granite mountain area for making construction space on the southeast sea coast in China during 1993-1996. This paper describes the blast design and damage control of one mountain blast 320m in length and 280m in width in the vicinity of two wharfs and a dam. In order to obtain better rock fragmentation and muckpile, the explosive charge should be well-distributed in the mountain. The charge pattern, therefore, was designed with mainly 5 rows of tunnel charge in regular terrain in combination with a chamber charge in irregular topography area and the maximum burden was limited to be less than 38m. In order to protect the dam and wharfs the firing sequence was carefully arranged in 29 intervals and the distance between different charges of the same delay to the dam or wharf was taken into account as an additional delay interval based on the difference of p-wave propagating times. The maximum charge fired in an interval was also limited to less than 34t explosives through dividing the larger charge by a stemming deck.

South Africa had a late start with rapid prototyping (RP), with the first system being available in 1991. Up to 1994 only three systems were available in SA. Through active research participation from the CSIR and a number of universities, supported by technology transfer programmes and industry awareness workshops, adoption of RP technologies started to grow. Internationally, RP grew to the extent that several country-based member organizations were formed, and an initiation meeting of the Global Alliance of RP Associations (GARPA) took place during the SME Rapid Conference in Dearborn, USA in 1998. South Africa (SA) was invited under the auspices of the Time Compression Technologies Centre (TCTC) launched by the CSIR, and received an invitation to become a member of GARPA through the launch of a national, inclusive organization. The latter gave rise to a RAPDASA planning/launch meeting held at the University of Stellenbosch, which culminated in the first RAPDASA international conference held in November 2000 at the CSIR, and the election of a first RAPDASA management committee, also at the 1st AGM held during the conference. RAPDASA has been a pillar of strength since then, with an annual international conference being presented. As South Africa?s RP awareness grew through the RAPDASA and independent activities, so did the availability of RP platforms in SA.SA also became a benchmark for other countries/late adopters to follow, as slowly a position of following became a position of leading through innovative applications. The paper highlights SA?s development approach and history, together with the discussion of case studies in various fields. Contribution to the light metals industry will also be discussed. THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Western Middle field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine-water problem in the anthra¬cite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10,11,1,2,15,16).8 The Western Middle field is in Schuylkill, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties in eastern Pennsylvania. It has an area of 120 square miles, is 42 miles long from Delano on the east to Trevorton on the west, and is 2 to 5 miles wide. In the Western Middle field are 58 underground water pools containing 38 billion gallons of water (5). Some of the pools overflow to the surface, and the water from others seeps into adjacent mines through permeable barrier pillars separating them from abandoned mines. Several active mines are interconnected to workings in abandoned mines, which are partly filled with water. These mines are separated by barrier pillars that are considered effective only below the altitude of the connections. In some abandoned mines, pumping stations maintain the water at altitudes where the hydrostatic pressure against the barrier pillars is not excessive and does not endanger adjacent active mines. If water in these abandoned mines is allowed to rise to where it can overflow into the active mines, it must be pumped from the active mines at lower altitudes; this materially increases the cost of pumping. It is estimated that from 1944 to 1948 approximately 30 percent of the water pumped to the surface was from abandoned mines.

All 231 Canadian primary gold mines that produced from 1946 to 2004 were analyzed with respect to their production and economic characteristics. Trend analysis revealed that the average annual capacity of Canadian gold mines, as measured by ore processed or gold produced, has increased over time. Conversely, the average grade of gold mines has decreased over time. The distribution of gold output is highly uneven: for example, the 22 giant mines producing more than 100 t (metric tonnes) of gold account for 62% of total output. Small mines producing less than 10 t Au account for 54% of total mines, but less than 4% of total gold. Each historical mine in the database was evaluated on the basis of a set of economic and technical assumptions to determine if it would be economic to develop today. Based on the net present value using an 8% discount rate, only 103 of the 231 mines were determined to be economic. About 80% of the uneconomic mines had less than 10 t of contained gold, and 63% had less than 5 t. It is concluded that these small mines would not be viable today due to a combination of real capital cost increases, and more stringent permitting and environmental regulations. The implication is that future gold supply in Canada will hinge on the discovery and development of a new generation of larger mines. Given that only one giant mine has been discovered in the past 20 years, it seems likely that gold output will decrease in the future.

Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities. For a theoretical description of power plants that derive their energy from the combustion of a fuel, it is necessary to solve, to an appropriate degree of precision, a hydrodynamic problem that requires for its solution a knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the working fluid com-posed of the products of the combustion reaction. It is usually a good approximation to assume that the properties of the combustion gas are determined by the conditions of thermal equilibrium, and it is thus possible to employ the methods of Classical thermodynamics for their computation. The thermodynamic properties of fuel gases also are of considerable importance, as they form the basis for the design of appropriate means for their effective utilization. The specification of the operating conditions to produce a gas for use as an intermediate in a chemical process, such as the synthesis of liquid fuels, may be based upon a study of the variation of the composition of the synthesis gas with changes in the various process variables. Although there exists a large number of important scientific and technical applications of the data that can be obtained from the systematic determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases, such application has been greatly handicapped by the extremely tedious and time-consuming computational methods required. The development of large-scale automatic computational equipment makes feasible the initiation of a systematic program for the determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases and for the application of such data to specific problems of scientific and technical importance. As a part of its program of basic research in flame and combustion phenomena, the Explosives and Physical Sciences Division of the Bureau of Mines is engaged in such a program. The present communication is designed to introduce a series of reports presenting the results of this program.

Six major trends that have had and are continuing to have major effects on the use and supplies of pig iron and scrap in the United States are (a) gradual replacement of the basic open hearth furnace (OH) by the basic oxygen furnace(BOF); (b) use of the electric furnaces for the production of plain-carbon steels, a trend which is closely related to the first; (c) United States changing from being a net exporter to a net importer of steel; (d) replacement of ingot casting by strand casting; (e) increased exportation of scrap; and (f) the lack of growth of the capacity of the U. S. steel industry to produce pig iron in the last 5 to 8 years. This report gives an analysis of the relationships between these trends and the use of processes for the production of raw steel in solidified form.

Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for asking me to your conference, with its most fundamental and appropriate topic of 'Investment in Mining'. I must confess at the outset that I am one of those Australians who has rarely visited your fair land of New Zealand. This is in fact only my third visit, with all three related to Institute Conferences, and all much too brief. In so many ways your country provides a counterpoise to ours, despite the obvious disparities in size and population. And I am not only referring to the Bledisloe Cup! We would certainly each be much more lonely without the other, in this strange long-lost corner of the globe û if globes can have corners. Such an important factor in common in our shared heritages has been the mineral industry we have won from our alluvials and our rocks û especially for gold. So much of the major mineral developments which have supplied the world's appetite for metals and fuels in the past two hundred years has come from the countries settled in that period by people from Europe, especially those from the British Isles. So much of the technology for mineral and metal extraction has come from the skills of those people in New Zealand and Australia. And so much of the further development of metal processing and manufacturing of productive equipment has come from those people and from their cousins throughout the world. It is, I believe, a fair question to ask why we have failed to build on those early and considerable successes, and why we have in so many ways apparently been so content to allow others to add value to our raw materials, and to take our technological developments on to levels far beyond those that our domestic markets could sustain.

For the construction of tunnels and other underground structures, extraction of the exact amount of material is of paramount importance both economically and for engineering purposes. In the Sequential Support Method (NATM) immediate (sequential)and smooth support by means of shotcrete, steel arches, lattice girders and rockbolts, either singly or in combination are used; cutting of the precise (albeit sometimes of complex geometry) profile is an integral part of the method. In order to save unnecessary excavation and provide better information to the machine operator, VMT GmbH has developed a system to support precise excavation of the tunnel profile when using road headers or other partial face cutting machines. This paper outlines the principles of this system with examples from Australia, Ger-many, Sweden and Spain and will cite examples of typical savings achieved.

The research project reported on represents the first comprehensive attempt to measure the vibration levels of a variety of tools and equipment in the South African mining industry to determine the effect thereof on the health of workers and operators. Although human vibration has been studied extensively internationally only one reference pertaining to the South African mining industry could be found. From studies conducted in Canada and elsewhere it was evident that rock drills do have potentially hazardous levels of vibration. The scope of the research included measurements on a broad spectrum of tools, machines and vehicles used in the South African mining industry. Both hand-arm vibration, where the majority of the vibration enter the body through the hands, and whole body vibration, where the whole body is exposed to vibration through contact by the buttocks or feet, were investigated and measured. More than 700 sets of vibration data measured on 70 machines at 15 mines and workshops were obtained. Data were obtained for at least 24 different types of equipment and machines that were previously judged to have medium to high levels of vibration. All measurements were conducted in accordance with the international standards: ISO 5349, on hand-arm vibration, and ISO 2631-1, for whole body vibration. The equipment with the highest vibration levels in the hand-arm category was: rock drills, both pneumatic and hydraulic; pavement breakers and jackhammers; hand-held compactors; pneumatic wrenches and electrical hammer drills. Of these the rock drills had weighted vibration levels in excess of 20 m/s2. As far as whole body vibration was concerned the highest values were measured on earth-moving equipment. The major conclusion from this study is that the measured vibration levels are sufficiently high to create an enhanced level of risk of vibration-induced disorders in a significant proportion of the operators of hand-held equipment. The most notable examples are hand-held rock drills, pavement breakers, jackhammers and certain selected workshop tools. The results of the study indicate that a comprehensive epidemiological study should be undertaken on present and past workers to determine the prevalence of vibration-induced disorders.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if residues from fractional distillation represent a potential source of mineral values. A literature review and discussions with tar sand specialists failed to disclose the mineralogical nature of residues remaining after bitumen extraction. To develop this information, pilot plant tar sand residues or toluene-cleaned tar sands from 23 deposits were examined. The nature of the residues was determined by standard mineralogical methods and the chemical compositions were determined by X-ray and ICP (inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy). None of the sands or concentrates examined contained sufficient valuable minerals to be economically important.

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. IntroductionGeographic information systems (GIS) are a relatively new tool in the mining industry. Although they have existed for a number of years, the potential of GIS for mine management and planning is only beginning to be investigated and exploited. The unique spatial capabilities of GIS make them particularly wellsuited for use in mining, where spatial information is fundamental to the processes of mineral exploration, mine development, and environmental reclamation. A number of potential applications for GIS in the mining industry have been identified, and they are widely used for exploration and reclamation. The use of a GIS as a platform for the development of mine planning routines and software remains an interesting, but as of yet unexplored, application of this technology."

Many mining operations rely on bulkheads to provide a barrier between impounded water or slurry and active mine workings. However, bulkhead failures could cause and have caused catastrophic flooding that puts the underground workforce at risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is conducting research to evaluate the adequacy of existing design practices for water and slurry bulkheads. A key component of this research effort is documentation of the performance history and design parameters for bulkheads installed in underground coal mines during the last 20+ years. This research is part of a larger effort to develop general design guidelines and procedures for constructing and maintaining bulkheads that will help to ensure their long-term structural integrity, while significantly reducing the inundation risk for miners. This paper presents the results of NIOSH’s research to identify state-of-the-art bulkhead designs, including design criteria, leakage monitoring systems, and emergency warning systems. Underground observations and evaluations of existing bulkheads suggest that the most important design factors influencing their performance are the interface of the bulkhead with the surrounding strata and the potential magnitude of the hydraulic pressure to which they may be subjected. When a bulkhead has failed, leakage has generally been through the surrounding strata or along the bulkhead/strata interface, with the failure potential along the interface increasing with hydraulic head. It was also determined that development of a monitoring program to ensure the long term structural integrity of bulkheads is an important safety consideration. Current monitoring procedures range from weekly visual inspections to constant monitoring via pressure transducers and fluid level indicators. Where possible, these devices are used in conjunction with a computer based mine monitoring system to alert mine personnel when an emergency condition exists at the bulkhead installation.

A new method, the gliding cylinder method, was proposed as a wide range viscometer for the measurements of molten salts, slags, and glasses. The method consists of two coaxial cylinders, cylindrical bob and a vessel containing a liquid sample. There is a narrow gap between bob and vessel. When the vessel moves against the bob, the generated force on the bob consists of three types of resistance: (1) Stokes’s resistance on the bob, (2) a capillary flow resistance though an annular gap between vessel and bob, and (3) lubricating resistance in a gap. The last two can be calculated on a theoretical basis but the first cannot be estimated by a simple calculation since a wall effect did not calculate easily. However, it can be assumed that the generated force depends on both the viscosity of a liquid and velocity of the vessel. Thus, the relation between viscosity and a force at desired velocity of the vessel was measured using several standard reference materials including glycerol aqueous solutions and standard reference oils. The results depended on the magnitude of the gap between the bob and the vessel. For the wider gap, it was shown that the viscosity is a linear function of a gradient of force with respect to a vessel velocity. In contrast, if the gap is small, the viscosity depends on the gradient (of force with respect to velocity). This implies that the non-linear phenomena would occur in Stokes resistance. Though detailed analysis is in a further investigation, a calibration method can be applied to determine the viscosity by this method, because good correlation was obtained among these quantities. Viscosity of molten salts, such as NaNO3and ZnCl2was measured by this method as high temperature demonstration. Pile load test programs were carried out in 1984 and 1985 at Stelco's and Dofasco's Steel Making Plants in the Hamilton Bayfront area. 323.9 mm outside diameter by 9.5 mm wall thickness Grade 3 steel closed-end pipe piles were driven to practical refusal at depths of 21 to 30 m in very dense silt till with Delmag D30 open-end diesel hammers. Ultimate bearing capacities of up to 5330 kN were proved by dynamic monitoring and static load tests. Allowable bearing capacities of 1780 kN were achievable on production piles without undue difficulty. It was found that the impact stress at the top of the pile was controlled by the yield strength of the steel rather than a useable upper limit based on the modulus of elasticity. A bearing to impact stress ratio of 1.2 at practical refusal was observed to be reasonable but conservative at this site, and is felt to be generally applicable for piles driven to practical refusal elsewhere. Dynamic monitoring during production pile driving was able to show that apparent relaxation was caused by pre-ignition of the hammer when visual observations indicated that pile driving was proceeding satisfactorily.
