Excessive noise has long been a hazard in the coal-mining industry. Studies conducted during both the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s consistently show that hearing hearing loss within the mining industry persists, in spite of regulatory requirements and sampling technology advances. When MSHA’s new health standards to protect miners from hearing loss took effect in September 2000, the potential developed to re-evaluate sampling approaches with regard to noise-source hazards, such as task-based methods. This paper describes results from a Penn State research project currently being conducted at an underground coal mine. Each occupation was reviewed, and a list of tasks or processes performed by each was generated. Traditional personal noise dosimetry, static sound pressure levels, and equipment sound mappings have been performed. Job tasks indicating the greatest levels of daily noise exposure and contributions to noise dose have been identified and will be discussed.

Pilot Hole ?X? was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine will be drilled. Five permeability tests were performed at various stratigraphic levels within this hole. The test method used was that of pumping fluids out of the hole for three hours, using the air lift method, followed by a three-hour period where the recharge was observed. Transmissivity and permeability results were determined from these test data. The test procedure used is described and supporting data for the hydrologic tests are provided.

Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. "The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads. The numerical computations have been based on the results of underground measurements of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads, which were performed for various geological and mining conditions and measured with the use of the endoscopic method with a digital camera. Having results of the underground investigations, trials of duplicating them by the Finite Element Method using software PHASE and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were performed. In order that the fractured zone predicted by the model-based computations closely simulate that measured underground, some selected parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were modified based on the earlier determined relations used for prediction of the roof-to-floor convergence in longwall gateroads. As a result, the model-based computations produce results very close to those obtained from the underground measurements. Determination of the fractured-rock zone around the mine roads is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads. The influence of the front abutment pressure causes the fractured rock zone around the roads to increase and results in an increase of support load. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of basic elements in the process of planning roof bolting for mine workings.

"Abstract The wet type and dry type of deep mixing methods have been developed and widely applied for on-land and marine constructions in Japan. The quality assurance (QA) of the methods has been usually carried out by unconfined compression test on field stabilized soil sampled by core boring in Japan. In some other countries, stabilized soil excavated by the wet grab sampling instead of core sampling is often subjected to unconfined compression test for quality assurance. There are several merits and demerits in each method, but few studies have been carried out to compare the stabilized soil strength of these two types of specimens to discuss their applicability to practical construction. The author has conducted a series of field and laboratory tests to compare the stabilized soil strength and discuss the applicability of wet grab sampling to QA for wet and dry types of deep mixing method.In this study, the wet grab sampling was carried out at two road embankment construction sites where the wet type and dry type of deep mixing were applied. The cement stabilized soil was excavated at the three depths by a wet grab sampler soon after the DM column construction. The test result is compared with the other test data in the previous study to discuss the applicability of the web grab sampling method for QA of cement stabilized soil.IntroductionThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM), an in-situ soil stabilization technique using cement and/or lime as a binder, is often employed to improve soft soils (Kitazume and Terashi, 2013). A variety of factors and their interactions affect the eventual strength of a deep-mixed column, while some of which are controllable (e.g. binder type and dose) by engineers while the others are not (e.g. soil types, ground temperature, etc.; Babasaki et al., 1997). In addition to laboratory mix tests, which in essence are a parametric study to estimate the influence of these factors on a particular soil’s strength, the quality assurance (QA) practice in Japan usually involves unconfined compression test on sampling cores from the stabilized columns after a given curing period. It has been recognized, however, that the ‘field strength’, or the strength of the retrieved core, quf is on average lower than the ‘laboratory strength’, qul, evaluated by laboratory mix test. Also allowing for the inevitable variability, existing guidelines (for example, PWRC, 2004 and CDIT, 2008) recommend the design quf /qul values of, for example, 0.5-1.0 for the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing; a wet-type technique, in which binder is added as slurry) and 0.2-0.33 for the DJM (Dry Jet Mixing; a dry-type technique, in which binder is added as powder)."

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

A 10-channel automatic data acquisition system has been designed and environmentally packaged for use with underground strain-gage applications and associated instruments. The system uses commercially available components and is assembled in two plastic enclosures. Environmental control is provided through a specially designed (compressed-air) air-conditioning system and water-resistant cabling. Accuracies of 0.01 pct and resolution of 1 µV have been obtained in underground tests.

Many people are familiar with the use of marine echo sounders which are used by fishermen to monitor water depth and locate schools of fish. Similar technology has recently been used in some West Australian mines to provide detailed maps of ore contacts and other geological structures. Whilst drillhole intersections provide details of the location of a contact at a point, echo sounding can be used to obtain a continuous profile of the contact. A series of profiles together with drillhole intersection data can be used to build a more accurate geological model than can be inferred from drillhole intersections alone. The benefits of this are more complete ore extraction, less dilution and the ability to make more informed financial decisions. This paper presents a case history which demonstrates the successful application of the technology.

The Orange-Vaal River system is known to be the primary secondary source for alluvial diamond deposits in the northern Cape and along the west coast of Namaqualand. The higher order sources for diamonds contained within this system are still not defined entirely to satisfaction, but certainly include kimberlite pipes exposed in the catchment regions of these rivers. The focus of alluvial diamond mining along the Orange-Vaal system recently changed from the traditional areas in the upper catchment regions?the Barkly West, Christiana, Bloemhof, Wolmaranstad, Schweizer-Reineke region, and the lower regions near the mouth of the Orange River at Baken, Alexander Bay and Oranjemund, to the area between Douglas and Prieska?the so-called mid-Orange region (Figure 1).

It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. This paper describes the design and construction of a 22.86 m (75 ft) long jacked tunnel, which was successfully installed, despite difficult mixed face conditions at Metro-North’s Westport Station, in Connecticut in the fall of 2003. The tunnel utilized what is believed to be, the first application of a steel grillage system within the United States. This grillage was installed before the jacking started and allowed the tunnel to be jacked under four live railway tracks, which included the Acela high speed line, without affecting train operations. The clearance between the top of the tunnel and the rails was only 0.9 m (3 ft).

In this development and use, and in the prevention of economic and physical waste of oil and gas, the objectives of the petroleum and natural-gas industries, the Government (Federal, State, and local), and the public are the same. Differences of viewpoint generally have originated in the failure of one of the triad to have a clear or complete understanding of the motives behind the activities of the other component groups or full knowledge of what each is trying to accomplish. The Unites States Bureau of Mines through its petroleum and natural-gas division makes technologic and scientific investigations pertaining to recovery,3 preparation, refining, and use of oil and natural gas with the view of reducing waste, increasing safety and efficiency and aiding economic development.

"A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MURRAY BROOK MINERAL DEPOSITDuring the mid-1950's intensive exploration activity in northern New Brunswick followed the discovery of the world class Brunswick base metal deposit. Using the prototypes of modern airborne geophysical and geochemical exploration techniques many mineralized areas in the Bathurst-Newcastle area were quickly identified. This base metal - silver camp is situated within the metavolcanic - metasidementary rocks of the Tetagouche Group which forms a roughly circular caldera-chaped voloanio complex of Ordivician age.One of the early results in the exploration history in the camp was the discovery of the Murray Brook Deposit by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Limited. During routine ground checking of geophysical anomalies, most of which turned out to be graphitic schist, the discovery of some copper bearing float was made by the exploration team. This encouraged the company sufficiently to carry out a regional stream sampling program which lead to a large anomaly associated with a hematitic gossan. Diamond drilling of a weak Slingram anomaly over the gossan zone resulted in the discovery of massive sulphide lenses. This was followed in 1956-7 with an intensive drilling program. The result was the delineation of a potential ore body containing an estimated 23 million tons with an overall grade of 0.44% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.95% zinc, 25.73 g/tonne (0.91 oz/ton) silver, 0.28 g/tonne (0.01 oz/ton) gold. Within this package were higher grade zones of copper and lead-zinc mineralization approaching ore grades.A thick blanket of gossan was present and is reported to have caused the drillers considerable trouble as they attempted to penetrate it to get to the underlying sulphides. The gossan, consisting of iron oxides and silica fragments sits on top of the massive sulphides and attains a remarkable thickness of 45.5 meters (150'). Early work had suggested that the gossan was enriched in gold and silver. If this were the case and if the precious metal could be leached out with cyanide, then mining and recovering those values might be economic.With this in mind Northumberland Mines Limited optioned the property from Kennco in 1985. Preliminary leach tests indicated that indeed the gold in particular leached readily. Subsequent drilling of the gossan (using triple core barrel technology for better recovery of the easily ground core) indicated 1,536,363 tonnes (1,690,000 tons) with an average grade of 1.05 g/tonne (0.037 oz/ton) gold and 42.13 g/tonne"

The Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) project will extend commuter and future statewide high-speed rail service into the Transbay Transit Center, which will be located in the business district in downtown San Francisco. The DTX project includes 1.5 miles of underground construction, comprising complex sections of mined and cut-and-cover tunnel. As part of the DTX preliminary engineering process, development of appropriate contracting practices, including contract packaging, procurement methods and contract terms for the underground construction, has been initiated. This paper provides a summary of the evaluations undertaken, preliminary conclusions reached, and proposed next steps to promote industry interest and maximize bid competition.

"Breakwater Tunisia S.A.’s Bougrine mine is located in a semi-arid region of Tunisia characterized with Triassic salt domes. Due to extensive agricultural land-use in the mine area, a zero-discharge tailings facility design and high water recycling rates to the concentrator were chosen to minimize the environmental impact to the surrounding area. The process water supply has an accumulation of naturally occurring salts due to high evaporation rates and the need to recycle 70% of the process water. The elevated salt content of the process water had an adverse effect on the efficiency of the flotation reagents, which led to the production of lower quality zinc concentrate.The impact of the water salinity on the zinc concentrate quality was documented by extensive laboratory testing. A feasibility study was prepared and a decision was made to install a reverse osmosis plant for desalination of the process water. A plant was constructed during 2000 which currently supplies up to 85 m3/hr of de-mineralized water, equal to approximately 45% of the total process water requirement. The salinity of the process water decreased from about ten to twelve grams per litre before installation to less than three grams per litre. Together with minor modifications to the concentrator circuit, Breakwater Tunisia has increased the zinc concentrate grade from 50% zinc to 55% zinc without compromising the zinc recovery rate of approximately 84%.This paper discusses the successful installation of a reverse osmosis desalination plant that allowed Breakwater Tunisia to improve the grade of the Bougrine mine zinc concentrate and thus increase the net smelter return.INTRODUCTIONBreakwater Resources Ltd., through a wholly owned subsidiary, Breakwater Tunisia S.A., acquired the Bougrine underground mine and related assets in September 1997. During the winter of 1997/1998, the company rehabilitated the mining equipment, modified the concentrator circuit, developed a new mine ventilation system and prepared a new mining production program. The mine was reopened on May 2, 1998 and was in commercial production as of June 1, 1998."
