A computerised cataloguing system for geological specimens is described. The catalogue is designed for use with a compactus-type storage system. The information stored in the catalogue for each specimen includes the type of specimen, locality information in terms of standard ~ap sheets and descriptive location, geological age, stratIgraphy, and specimen descriptions. The catalogue can be interrogated at any level of detail on the basis of any combination of these specimen parameters.Other information stored for each specimen 'is the compactus address, collection date, reference information and the type of analyses performed on that specimen:Any mterrogatlon produces a listing of those specimens which satisfy the search criteria.

THE OUTPUT ff the mineral industry in 1964 in both non-Communist and Communist Europe showed an upward trend for most countries in keeping with the higher index of overall industrial production. Comparable indexes of mineral industry production for non-Communist and Communist Europe (including the U.S.S.R. in Asia) are not available, primarily because the U.S.S.R. does not report details of its industrial production by industrial sectors. However, available data both in the form of index numbers on production published by the United Nations and based on data as reported to the United Nations by the various countries, and actual production data for selected major commodities published by the various European countries reflect generally expanded output by both the extractive sector and the processing sector of the mineral industry in most of the 26 nations of Europe.

"A blast with explosives creates vibration waves in the zone around the blast.The prediction of the intensity of vibrations is important because people in the cinity demand that the vibrations do not disturb them, and society imposes limits on the vibrations. The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) showed that the easurement of the particle velocity U predicts the risk of damage from vibrations. A currentapproach of blasters to monitor vibrations is to measure them with a seismograph at several distances S, and create a graph of U vs. S and the explosive charge “W” according to the equation U = K / (S / W)N where K and N are constants that depend on the blast method and the nature of the ground over the distance S. Though useful, this equation is empirical, and the results predicted from it are very variable, as shown by figure 1 which indicates that a prediction of U can deviate significantly from the actual value. Moreover, a minimum of two seismograph measurements at two values of S are required to establish the curve. However, here now exists another very convenient method to predict U; it is with the simulator Vibmas, which is based on the fundamental principles of how a blast reates vibrations. This simulator takes into account not only W but rather all the blast parameters, the type of explosive and the properties of the rock. Moreover, to establish the calculation of U as a function of S, only one seismograph measurement is required rather than two as for the USBM method. This last difference is important because it makes it easy to predict U not only as a function of S, but also as a function of the orientation of S. On the site this allows much safer control of the vibrations, and the use of larger explosive charges which reduce excavation costs. The article presents results from a field case at a hydroelectric project in Canada, where the deviation was very moderate. Use of this vibration simulator on the Web is very easy."

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."

THE Juniper Prospect is in Carleton County, N. B., at approximately 46" 31' north latitude, 67" 20' west longitude. During the summer of 1955 an area in west-central New Brunswick was selected for aerial electromagnetic prospecting with American Metal Co.'s helicopter-mounted equipment. Generalized, small-scale government geologic maps had suggested that this area was located along the western border of the northeast-trending granitic backbone of northwestern New Brunswick and might be underlain by the Ordovician-Silurian sediments and volcanics that are the host rocks for the recently discovered sul-fide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle district. The helicopter electromagnetic equipment located an anomalous conductive area, coincident with a small aeromagnetic closure, about five miles west of the town of Juniper. Subsequently 30 mining claims (total area about 6600 x 8000 ft) were staked and company personnel conducted geological, geophysical, and geochemical investigations on the property. The claims and immediately contiguous areas were mapped geologically, and an area of about 2000 x 4000 ft was soil-sampled and also surveyed by ground electromagnetic and gravity methods. Finally six diamond drillholes, totaling 3500 ft in length, were drilled to test the anomalous conditions discovered by the several exploration techniques used. The discovery of base metal sulfides during drilling was a technical success for the exploration methods, but the quantity of sulfides was too small to be profitably exploited.

Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.

Although only used in a few U.S. longwall mines, bleeder-less ventilation systems can be an effective spontaneous combustion control method in mines having a demonstrated history of spontaneous combustion. To provide insights for the optimization of bleederless ventilation systems for U.S. underground coal mines, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas using a bleederless ventilation system. A single longwall panel with a bleederless ventilation system was simulated, and typical longwall mine ventilation data were used in the simulations. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were estimated using a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. The effects of gob permeability and resistance of the collapsed entries on the spontaneous heating were studied. The effectiveness of using nitrogen injection to prevent spontaneous heating in the gob was also examined.1

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Lonmin, platinum, PGM, UG2 Lonmin, earlier than any other primary platinum producer, had to deal with the concentrating and smelting of UG2-rich ores and concentrates respectively. Smelting was performed at a fairly modest scale compared to its industry peers in the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) industry, and was focused on smelting concentrates obtained through low mass pulls while still maintaining high recoveries at its concentrators. Lonmin gradually smelted larger quantities of UG2 concentrates. Initially two 2.3 MW Infurnco furnaces were commissioned in 1982, followed by three 5 MW circular 3-electrode Pyromet furnaces in 1991. Deep electrode immersions and moderately high hearth power densities were used in all the designs. Lonmin decided to continue with circular furnace technology when it planned its new high-intensity No. 1 Furnace. Neither Lonmin nor the technology supplier and EPCM company foresaw the challenges that scale-up would bring when applied to the smelting of UG2-rich concentrate blends. Superimposed on the high chromite content, was the low base-metal loading, mineralogical difficulties, and fine particle size that came with milling of all concentrates (especially UG2 and recycle materials within the smelter). Through a process of fundamental diagnoses of furnace run-outs and wear patterns observed during repairs, the main challenges operating this high-intensity furnace were identified as sulphur vapour corrosion of the copper coolers, uneven and unpredicted movements of refractory bricks with associated copper cooler lift and matte tap-block movement, the formation of three-phase ?mushy? zones, high refractory and tap-hole wear rates, uncertainty in matte level and associated insufficient matte buffer height, and high furnace operating temperatures. These factors seldom worked in isolation and will be explored in more detail in the paper. The variability in furnace feed characteristics led Lonmin to re-design Furnace No. 1, to invest in back-up furnace capacity, and to invest in improved monitoring and control. These improvements consisted of online and high-frequency off-line feed chemistry and mineralogy monitoring, online pressure monitoring of water-cooled circuits, an alternative matte liquid level measurement in the furnace, and electrode immersion estimation. Improvements were also made at the converters by installing and utilising optical spectral analysis of the converter flame to characterise converter behaviour and achieve the desired iron end-point for white matte. This paper also briefly discusses the current and future expansion plans, as well as ancillary operations at the smelter such as flue-gas handling and materials handling.

Resin grouted rock bolts are the major support measure in coal mining. They are rather easy and foolproof to install, take immediately load and are the least time consuming support measure for controlling gateroad deformation. The use of only resin grouted bolts allows fast gateroad development which is essential for economical resource exploitation. The design of reinforcement / support systems for coal mining typically bases on empirical methods, which work fine when encountering known or usual ground conditions. However, coal mining approaches depths where little experience exists and numerical modeling is often the only method to estimate ground behavior. This paper discusses the geotechnical properties relevant to numerical model and focuses particularly on input values for modeling resin grouted rock bolts for safe gate design.

I NT RODUCTION Theory indicates that linear water-floods should exhibit scaling and stabilization properties in both oil-wet and water-wet porous media'. Experimental verification of these proper-ties in oil-wet media was obtained some time ago', and more recently, Perkins', employing a high permeability unconsoli dated sand and a low oil-to-water viscosity ratio, has obtained flooding data in a water-wet medium which follow the pattern of scaling and stabilization. Also, Root and Calhoun3 have found similar trends in the displacement of gas by liquids from unconsolidated sands. In general, however, the experimen-tal evidence appears still somewhat conflicting since scaling and stabilization of water floods in water-wet media has not been observed in most of the studies to date'.".'. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive picture of waterflood behavior in water-wet media and to corroborate the validity of the scaling and stabiliza-tion concepts. The need for differentiating between the intrinsic nature of water-oil displacements inside a porous medium and perturbating secondary end effects is discussed, pertinent experimental procedures are outlined and the results of flooding tests conducted at low and at high oil-to-water viscosity ratios on con- solidated, water-wet Alundum cores are analyzed. END EFFECTS IN WATER-WET MEDIA Outlet End Effects The peculiar feature of the outlet end effect in water-wet cores is that it not only results in an excessive wetting phase saturation at the outflow face,'.' but that it also retards the moment of water breakthrough: i.e., causes an undue delay in the appearance of water in the produced effluent. Conditions existing in a water-wet core when water first arrives at the outflow face are schematically shown in Fig. 1. At this flooding stage the saturation distribution, Fig. la, has not yet been distorted by the outlet end effect. A water-invaded pore at the outlet core face, opening into the oil-filled void space between the end of the core and the end plate of the flooding cell, is illustrated in Fig. lb. The curvature of the water-oil interface is concave toward the outlet, and the pressure on the water side of the interface is lower than on the oil side by an amount equal to a certain capillary pressure (Fig. lc). Before the water (of this particular pore) can be produced from the core, it is apparent that the pressure in the water phase must exceed that in the oil outside the core. Accordingly. when water first reaches the outlet face, it will not leave the core but will accumulate inside, and only oil will be produced. Eventually, as the water injection is continued. sufficient pressure is built up in the water to reverse the curvature of the interfaces in the outlet pores, and only then will water be produced from the core. This stage, illustrated in Fig. 2. corresponds to the conventional "water breakthrough" observed in flooding experiments. For purposes of discussion, it is convenient to distinguish between the flooding stage at which water first arrives at the outlet face of a core (Fig. 1) and the stage at which water is first produced from the core ( Fig. 2). INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

Dr David Greenwood opened the first technical session of the conference by highlighting the diverse nature of the papers in this session but drawing attention to the common theme that each solved a particular problem. PAPER 1.1 Tony Elliott introduced his paper on deep mix-in-place soil/cement stabilisation by stressing its simplicity. The engineering solution adopted at Elland was detailed in his paper and had formed the key to success of the project. The process itself is not widely used or known in the UK, although it has the potential to achieve significant benefits, subject to proper engineering control being exercised. It was explained that although the concept was not new, development of the technique for soil modification was relatively recent. The alternatives to mechanical mixing are injection, which is very dependent on soil type, site geometry, etc, and jet grouting; both processes are soil-responsive, and not easily monitored or programmed, difficulties which can largely be overcome by mixing. To achieve this at depths to say 30m requires high-powered, high torque machines and has resulted in significant equipment development.

A process for the recovery of cobalt from a speiss produced at Sulphide Corporation is presented. The speiss is leached in oxygenated sulphuric acid to dissolve the metallic iron at a pH of around 4. The resultant iron (11) is subsequently oxidized in the leaching vessel and precipitates as goethite. Acid is regenerated in the precipitation allowing dissolution of further speiss. Subsequent to the conversion of most of the iron in the speiss to goethite, conditions become sufficiently oxidizing to dissolve cobalt. Cobalt is not co-precipitated under the leaching conditions, yielding a pregnant solution containing the cobalt and some iron (11). The principal advantage of such a process is the significantly lower acid consumption over that obtained by complete dissolution followed by selective precipitation. An impure product of cobalt hydroxide can be obtained from the pregnant solution by neutralization.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. The strength of roof shales is, in part, a function of the preferred orientation of clay minerals within them. Therefore, analysis of clay fabric under both air-dried and hydrated conditions should be helpful in understanding roof shale failure. Core samples were collected from the Energy, Anna, and Lawson shales, which are locally present as roof shales of the Herrin No. 6 coal of southern Illinois. The Clay Fabric Index (CFI) was measured for thirty core samples, using X-ray diffractomtry, to investigate the relationship between clay fabric and roof collapse in coal mines. Greater CFI values indicate a weaker preferred orientation among clay minerals, which generally results in a weaker inter-grain bond. Average CFI values for air-dried samples were: 0.15 for Anna shale; 0.20 for Energy shale; and 0.37 for Lawson shale, .After the introduction of water, average CFI values increased to: 0.28 for Anna shale; 0.22 for Energy shale; and 0.43 for Lawson shale. The laboratory results indicate the following: [l] under air-dried conditions, Anna shale is the most stable, followed by Energy and Lawson shales; and 121 under hydrous (mine) conditions, Energy shale is the most stable, followed by Anna and Lawson shales. In mine environments where roof failures involving Energy shale have occurred, planar trends delineated by a relatively high density of small (0.2-4 cm diameter) iron concretions have been reported along the failure surface. Radial cracks have been observed around unsealed anchor bolt holes in the Anna shale. Instability of the Lawson shale is ubiquitous in coal mines. In the laboratory, similar physical changes were noted in the shale samples after the introduction of water, including [l] increased hydration around the perimeter of iron concretions in Energy shale, [2] radial extension cracks in Anna shale, and 131 extreme slaking of Lawson shale. Measured increases in the CFI reflect the observed physical changes of the samples upon the introduction of water, which probably reflect changes in strength that may result in roof failures in hydrated mine environments.

An equation developed for gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 0.73 percent when applied to 264 natural gas and condensate systems including 2,043 PVT points. Another equation developed for liquid hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 1.12 percent when applied to 346 crude oil systems including 1,759 PVT points. Both equations require composition of the mixture to be expressed as mole fraction of methane through heptanes-plus, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, together with the characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction in addition to the temperature and pressure. The equations cover wide ranges of the variables involved, and their accuracy is considerably better than that of other available methods. The equations were differentiated to allow calculation of the coefficients of isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion. (In this paper the coefficient of isothermal com-pressibility and the coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion will be expressed as compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient, respectively.) Equations to calculate these quantities are presented. INTRODUCTION Calculations of reservoir performance for petroleum reservoirs require accurate knowledge of the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, both liquid and gaseous. Compressibilities are required in transient fluid flow problems, and thermal expansion coefficients are important in thermal methods of production. An accurate laboratory investigation of the PVT behavior of each reservoir fluid encountered would be costly and time consuming. For this reason various correlations for predicting fluid properties have been developed and recorded in recent literature. Correlations have been presented in the form of graphs, tables and equations. Since an increasing number of studies are being conducted with the aid of electronic computers, recent efforts have been directed toward development of correla-tions suitable for computer programming. Application of computers permits the use of more complex correlations which otherwise are not feasible. Moreover, methods for predicting reservoir performance, particularly those based on the compositional material balance, depend upon the capability of accurately expressing the molal volumes and other fluid properties as functions of pressure, temperature and composition. B ECAUSE of its remote geographical position and inaccessibility, little is generally known of the mining and prospecting in Northern Rhodesia. In this rather new and promising region, the development of mines presents many difficulties. Although many mineral discoveries have been made, progress in .prospecting the huge mining concessions has been handicapped by the lack of roads, communication, transportation, native population and incomplete knowledge of geology.
